Phytochemical Piperine, the Potent Immune System Enhancer, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an alkaloid in black pepper for the enhancement of the immune function with no side effects, according to studies.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

Through the expression of the lines of defense, depending on the stage of pathogenic invasion, the innate immune response protects the body via a different set of interaction.

In the acute phase of infection, the macrophages in the immune system stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of the damage. The inflammatory cytokines not only play a critical role in stopping the stimuli from entering into the body but also speeds up the wound healing through growth factors.

The innate immune system also can destroy the damage cells such as cancer cell through the T cell activation of B cells which in turn stimulates the production of a protein associated with the production of antibody p53.

Some researchers suggested immune system also can kill cancer cells by reacting to activating cytokines (IFN-α/β, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, IL-21) produced by tumor cells or by other immune cells stimulated by tumor cells.

Therefore, by modulating the immune responses to the needs of the body, the immune can keep us strong and diseases free.

Dr. Assaf Marcus and colleagues in the investigation of the study "Recognition of tumors by the innate immune system and natural killer cells" wrote, " First, cell-intrinsic mechanisms, like any other mechanism, are prone to failure, necessitating the existence of redundant systems. A second, unique, benefit of immune mechanisms of tumor suppression is that they can act in a paracrine manner. Secretion of cytokines such as IFN-γ, for example, can suppress the growth of neighboring tumor cells even if they do not upregulate immune-activating ligands".

And,  "Secretion of cytokines such as IFN-γ, for example, can suppress the growth of neighboring tumor cells".

These results clearly suggested by keeping your immune system strong, you can be free for infectious diseases and cancers.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

With an aim to find a natural bioactive compound which processes the immune enhancing effect researchers assessed the production of antibody response against Russell's viper venom in mice after prophylactic immunization with ethanolic extract of fruits of Piper longum L. and piperine, compared to that of the Polyvalent anti-snake venom serum (antivenom)(PLE) manufactured by Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation Ltd.

According to the results from the tested assay, treatment with PLE-treated mice serum and piperine-treated mice serum was found to inhibit the lethal action of venom both in the in vitro.

Futhermore, there were significantly high (p<0.01) levels of cross-reactions between the PLE and piperine treated mice serum and the venom antigens.

However, immunization with ethanolic extract of fruits of Piper longum and piperine produced a high titer antibody response against Russell's viper venom in mice, compared to PLE.

These results suggested that piperine stimulated the immune function in producing antigens against the lethal action of venom may be considered a potential for the development of antivenom formulation as an antidote against snake bites.

In embryonated fertile chicken eggs, researchers found that PLE was found to inhibit the venom-induced hemorrhage in the eggs.

Combined administration of PLE and piperine significantly inhibited venom-induced lethality, hemorrhage, necrosis, defibrinogenation and inflammatory paw edema in mice in a dose-dependent manner.

LE and piperine also significantly (p<0.01) reduced venom-induced mast cell degranulation in rats by improving the immune responses to inflammatory and allergic reactions.

Before treatment, the injection of venom in mice showed reduced levels of catalase enzyme levels in mice kidney tissue and an increase in creatine kinase enzyme levels, the indication of inflammation.

Combined administration of both PLE and piperine also restored the antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of venom in mice

These findings suggested that piperine not only protects our body against venom-induced hemorrhage, necrosis, defibrinogenation but also inhibited an overreaction of the immune response in the stimulation of inflammation.

Moreover, piperine is effective compared to those of antivenom medicine.

Taken altogether, Piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the treatment of venom caused by insect and poison animal bites, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke Kills Leukemic Cells Before They Can Spread, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke may have a positive and profound effect in reducing risk and treatment of leukemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Leukemia is a medical condition arisen from the abnormal white blood cells produced by the bone marrow.

There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.

Contrast to chronic leukemias that take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.

According to the Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.

And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.

Certain types of blood disorder, exposure to radioactive substances, and certain medication are some of the prevalent risks of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that cigarette smoking may contribute to the large part of AML onset compared to other subtypes.

Dr. Fircanis S in the study of "The relation between cigarette smoking and risk of acute myeloid leukemia: an updated meta-analysis of epidemiological studies" wrote in the final report, "current and ever smokers have 40% (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60; P < 0.001) and 25% (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.15-1.36; P < 0.001) increased risk of developing AML when compared with non-smokers".

And, "Intensity of smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 cigarettes per day was associated with RRs of AML of 1.27, 1.36, 1.55, and 1.77, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Duration of smoking of <20 and >20 years was associated with RRs of 1.07 and 1.44, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Cumulative smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 pack-years was associated with RRs of 1.13, 1.23, 1.39, and 1.71, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend)".

The results strongly suggested that cigarette smoking is a major risk factor of acute myeloid leukemia and the risk of AML is increased depending on how many cigarettes that a person smokes a day.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural whole food for the treatment of leukemia against the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines investigated the extract and 3 participating compounds of artichoke leaves (bracts on the human leukemia cell line.

Injection of the artichoke extract and compounds showed to modulate the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of proinflammatory protein (NF-κB) and the intracellular proinflammatory reactive oxygen species.

Low concentrations of the extract inhibited the enzyme AKR1B1 associated with the activation of NF-κB and the expression of pro-inflammatory genes.

The efficacy of the extract in the attenuation of the expression of the inflammation-related enzymes COX-2 and MMP-2 was attributed to the inhibiting activity of NF-κB.

In other words, artichoke reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species in activation the protein NF-κB.

By suppressing the enzyme AKR1B1, artichoke reduced the inflammatory expression in facilitating the onset of leukemia.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about artichoke extract (CCE) against leukemia researchers evaluated the CCE effect on the growth of L1210 and HL-60 leukemia cells.

Injection with a variety of concentrations of CCE (500-2500 microg/microL) for 24 h resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of leukemia cell growth observed by the cell cycle arrest in S phase.

CCE also induced apoptosis of leukemia cells, detected by the sub-G(0) cell population and apoptotic DNA fragmentation.

The findings suggested that CCE inhibits leukemia cells through several mechanisms including the proteins associated with cell cycle division, inflammation, and cell degradation.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tualang Honey the Best to Boosts Memory

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a profound and positive effect in boosting human memory, some scientists suggested

Memory is a process of the minds in the learning and storing information.

Memory impairment is a condition of not remembering the new and current event which may be recalled in a short period of time, affecting mostly the older population.

Memory impairment is early symptoms associated with the late-life neurodegenerative diseases.

Contrast to general belief, memory impairment not only is associated with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases but also can be caused by other factors such as medical conditions including stroke and brain injury.

Long-term use of certain medications such as antidepressants, antihistamines, anti-anxiety medications, excessive alcohol drinking, substance abuse, and tobacco are some major risk factors associated with the onset of memory loss.

Some resaerchers suggested that people who are living under long-term stress and anxiety or follow a nutritionally deficient diet are most vulnerable to the condition develops.

According to the article "Stress might lead to memory loss and brain shrinkage, study says" By Sandee LaMotte, CNN wrote, "If you live a high-stress life, you could have memory loss and brain shrinkage before you turn 50, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology".

"Higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, seem to predict brain function, brain size and performance on cognitive tests," said study author Dr. Sudha Seshadri, professor of neurology at UT Health San Antonio.

"We found memory loss and brain shrinkage in relatively young people long before any symptoms could be seen," Seshadri said. "It's never too early to be mindful of reducing stress."

In other words, long-term stress can induce the production of certain hormones such as cortisol which have strong implications on the brain in the induction of memory loss.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding the correlation and association with the aging and stress exposure and memory impairment, researchers examined the potential protective effects of Tualang honey supplementation on memory performance in aged rats exposed to noise stress.

Tested rats were given orally, 200 mg/kg body weight of Tualang honey supplementation for 28 days, before exposing to the loud noise, 100 dB(A), 4 hours daily for 14 days.

Rats subjected to noise stress exhibited significantly lower memory performance and higher oxidative stress, through the increased expression of oxidative stress markers, the elevated malondialdehyde, and protein carbonyl levels.

The stress rats also exhibited a reduction of the levels of antioxidant enzymes compared to the nonstressed rats.

Tualang honey supplementation applied to the stress rats showed a significant improvement of the memory performance, by decreasing oxidative stress levels and increasing the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentration, which was reduced due to stress.

Furthermore, Tualang honey also normalized the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the stress rats body and enhanced neuronal proliferation in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus associated to the memory, particularly, in long-term memory.

Dr. Azman KF, the lead scientist at the final report wrote, "Tualang honey protects against memory decline due to stress exposure and/or aging via enhancement of mPFC and hippocampal morphology possibly secondary to a reduction in brain oxidative stress and/or upregulation of BDNF concentration and cholinergic system".

The results underlined the effects of Tualang honey effect in boosting the short and long-term memory which was significantly reduced by stress exposure and/or aging.

Moreover, in the study of the total of forty-eight adult male rats randomly divided into the following four groups: i) nonstressed with vehicle, ii) nonstressed with Tualang honey, iii) stressed with vehicle, and iv) stressed with honey with supplement was given once daily via oral gavage at 0.2 g/kg body weight, researchers found that
* The rats subjected to noise stress was found to process higher levels of depressive-like behavior and lower memory functions compared to the unexposed control rats.

* Tuatang honey supplementation regimen successfully counteracted the effects of noise stress.

* Tualng honey also increased the climbing and swimming and mobility times significantly.

These results suggested that Tualang honey normalizes the cognitive function of the rats exposed to the noise stress, similar to those of the first study.

Taken altogether, Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of cognitive impairment, pending to the larger and multi center's human study.

Ginger, The Potential Anti Type 2 Diabetes Pungent Spice, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be next generation whole food used for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researchers do not know what causes the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up. However, they do know obesity or overweight, gender, ethnicity, age, family history, gestation diabetes, are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

Most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

If you experience some of the symptoms above, please make you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes.

According to the statistics, diabetes is one the most common disease in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Dr. Rita R. Kalyani in the study to examine the increase with age and risk of type 2 diabetes wrote, "The unprecedented aging of the world's population is a major contributor to the diabetes epidemic, and older adults represent one of the fastest growing segments of the diabetes population".

"Almost one-third of U.S. adults over the age of 65 years have diabetes. Approximately half of those are undiagnosed, and an additional one-third of older adults have prediabetes" and "management of older adults with diabetes is clearly more complicated given the observation that they commonly have multiple coexisting medical conditions that can impact clinical management".

Compared to the general population risk of type 2 diabetes, the results clearly stated, the risk of type diabetes in elderly is  3 fold higher and the management of the disease is more difficult due accompanied by other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with little or no side effects, researchers looked into the effects of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial, included 70 type 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into ginger group consumed 1600 mg ginger and control group consumed 1600 mg wheat flour daily for 12 weeks.

Patients treated with ginger demonstrated a significant effect in reducing the levels of fasting plasma glucose, 3 months average glucose concentration, insulin resistance.

Furthermore, the blood profile of treatment group also displayed lower levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, a hormone associated with lipid peroxidation. compared to the placebo group.

There were no significant differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein LDL, and TNFα, the inflammatory cytokine between two groups.

The findings firmly indicated ginger improves insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profiles and reduced inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients.

Additionally, with an aim to reaffirm the effects of ginger against the development of type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications, researchers investigated the effect of ginger supplementation on glycemic indices in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 20-60 -year-old patients with type 2 diabetes who did not receive insulin.

Participants in the intervention and control groups were received 3 g of powdered ginger or placebo (lactose) (in capsules) daily for 3 months.

At the end of the 3 months, researchers showed that all parameters associated diabetes were reduced substantially in the treatment group compared to control.

More precisely, the differences between the ginger and placebo groups were statistically significant as follows: serum glucose (-19.41 ± 18.83 vs. 1.63 ± 4.28 mg/dL, p < 0.001), (Hemoglobin A1C)HbA1c percentage (-0.77 ± 0.88 vs. 0.02 ± 0.16%, p < 0.001), insulin (-1.46 ± 1.7 vs. 0.09 ± 0.34 μIU/mL, p < 0.001), insulin resistance (-16.38 ± 19.2 vs. 0.68 ± 2.7, p < 0.001), high-sensitive CRP (-2.78 ± 4.07 vs. 0.2 ± 0.77 mg/L, p < 0.001), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) (22.04 ± 24.53 vs. 1.71 ± 2.72 U/L, p < 0.006), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (0.78 ± 0.71 vs. -0.04 ± 0.29 µIU/mL, p < 0.01) and MDA (-0.85 ± 1.08 vs. 0.06 ± 0.08 µmol/L, p < 0.001) were significantly different.

Where paraoxonase ((PON)-1 is an enzyme associated with the protection against lipid oxidation, Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker.

Dr. Shidfar F, the lead scientist said, " the 3 months supplementation of ginger improved glycemic indices, TAC and PON-1 activity in patients with type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects.

Herbal Butterbur, the Potent Neuro-protective Bioactive Herbal Medicine

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may have a profound and strong effect on protecting the neuron integrity and validity against the onset of neuro diseases, some scientists suggested.

Neuroprotective effects are the activity which protects neurons of the brain and spinal cord.

A neurologic deficit is a condition of the brain, spinal cord, leading to weaker muscles, nerves or part of the body.

The causes of neurological deficit include genetic disorders, congenital abnormalities or disorders, infections, lifestyle or environmental health problems associated with malnutrition, and brain injury, spinal cord injury or nerve injury.

People of neurologic deficit may experience certain medical conditions and symptoms including partial or complete paralysis, and loss of sensation, seizures, difficulty reading, and writing and walking and decreased alertness.

However, some researchers suggested the most serious symptoms is a  poor cognitive ability, depending on the parts of the brain or spinal cord which have been affected.

According to the statistic provided by the US government, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and disease with a tendency to increase at an alarming rate, particularly in the age group of 50 and over.

People with cognitive impairment, according to the report are more than three times as many hospitals stay as individuals who are hospitalized for some other condition, causing a substantial burden to the US health care system.

Out of all neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias alone are estimated to be the third most expensive disease to treat in the United States.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures 20106, wrote, “ The average Medicaid payment for a person aged 65 or older with Alzheimer’s or other dementias is nine times higher than that for other beneficiaries in the same age group.”

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as an pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

The Second Military Medical University on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of neurologic deficit examine the effect of the total bakkenolides, a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur, in vitro cerebral ischemia model and oxygen-glucose deprivation of cultured nerve cells.

Oral administration of total bakkenolides showed a significant immediate effect after reperfusion at doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg markedly reduced brain infarct volume and neurological deficits.

The chemical compound also was found to attenuate cell death and apoptosis in primary cultured neurons subject to 1-h hypoxia followed by 24-h reoxygenation.

The compound also protects the neurons by inhibiting the protein involved production of inflammatory cytokines through blocking activation of the classical activation pathway due to the injury.

Further differentiation of the experiment, researchers discovered that total bakkenolides inhibit the activation of pathways associated with neuron apoptosis.

Dr. the lead scientists after taking into account of co and confounders said, "our results provide a strong pharmacological basis for further understanding the potential therapeutic role of total bakkenolides in cerebral ischemic disease and shed new light on its neuroprotective mechanism".

Moreover, in the examine the neurologic deficit effects of 4 novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus, researchers showed the compounds 1 - 4 exert a significantly neuroprotective activity in primary cultured neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults by enhancing the antioxidant activity.

According to the VITRO assay, all these compounds exhibited significant neuroprotective and antioxidant activities.

The findings strongly suggested total bakkenolides and its derivative demonstrate neurologic deficits protective effects through blocking the mechanisms involved neuron cells apoptosis through their antioxidant property.

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur processed bioactive compounds such as bakkenolides may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of neurologic deficits.

Herbal Andrographis, the Potential Anti Gastric Ulcer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural plant for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer with no side effects, according to studies.

Gastric ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining the stomach.

Most cases of the gastric ulcer are associated with the infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

If you are experiencing the persistent symptoms of dull pain in the stomach, nausea or vomiting bloating, acid reflux heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest pain that may improve when you eat, drink and black color of stool due to bleeding, you may have a gastric ulcer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In serious cases, patients may also develop anemia and vomit blood.

According to the statistic, Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a very common disorder in the US, affecting over 4 million people each year.

In the study compared the bacterial infection in patients with duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcer, researchers showed prevalence of H. pylori in antral mucosa was higher in patients with duodenal ulcers (81.5%) than in patients with gastric ulcer and non-ulcer dyspepsia (56% and 52.8%) (P<0.05) and the detection of gastric ulcer is lower compared to duodenal ulcers.

Furthermore, Among patients with antibody to H. pylori, H. pylori were detected in 85.7% of patients with duodenal ulcer, 62.5% of patients with gastric ulcers and 22.2% of patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia(p<0.05).

These results clearly suggested that bacterial H. pylori are the main culprit to ulcers in the digestive system, an indication of adaptive immune defenses against infection and inflammation.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic for the treatment of common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, herbal Andrographis also processes ingredients of diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoinds viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographidines A, B, C, D, E, F.

In order to find an effective natural compound for the treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the gastroprotective property of andrographolide, a chief component of the leaves of Andrographis paniculata in terms of the ulcer preventive effect in rats.

The dose responsive study was conducted in rats pretreated with andrographolide (1, 3 and 5 mg/kg) for a period of 30 days, prior to ulcer induction by administering ethanol, aspirin or by pyloric ligation.

During the experiment, researchers found the LD(50) value was found to be 48 mg/kg b. wt and the effective dose was found to be 3 mg/kg.

Application of andrographolide showed an increasing level of the pH and decrease in titrable acidity observed in the gastric fluid of rats pretreated with the test drug.

Andrographolide reduced the expression of the gastric tissue H(+)-K(+) ATPase, an enzyme which functions to acidify the stomach. and myeloperoxidase activities that were elevated in ulcer-induced animals.

Furthermore, the antioxidants and mucin levels were significantly maintained in the gastric tissue of drug-pretreated animals. No toxicity was found in the tested rats.

After taking into account of co and confounders, researchers wrote in the final report, "the ulcer preventive efficacy of andrographolide may probably due to its antioxidant, cytoprotective and antiacid secretory effects".

Additonally, in a study of pretreated with HAEAP (100,200,500mg/kg b. wt for 30 days) and then gastric ulcers were induced by ethanol, aspirin, pylorus ligation, and cold restraint stress models firmly supported the use of a hydroalcoholic extract of Andrographispaniculata (HAEAP) for treatment of gastric ulcers.

Also,  the ulcer score was found to be low in HAEAP-pretreated rats, particularly at the dose of 200 mg/kg b.wt. and the tested drug significantly reduced the acidity, pepsin concentration, myeloperoxidase, and H(+)K(+)ATPase activities in ethanol-administered rats as of that in the previous study.

More importantly, the tested drug also normalized the elevated TBARS, formed as a byproduct of lipid peroxidation, overexpression of free radicals and decreased glutathione (GSH), the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and mucin levels.

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Promising Anti Skin Diseases Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the treatment of skin diseases with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic causes.

Most cases of skin disease are involved allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.

Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as the dermatological disease may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.

Dr. Rajani Katta and colleagues in the dermatological disease team at the Baylor College of Medicine said, " In this review, the authors focus on conditions for which the role of diet has traditionally been an underappreciated aspect of therapy".

"In some cases, dietary interventions may influence the course of the skin disease, as in acne. In others, dietary change may serve as one aspect of prevention, such as in skin cancer and aging of the skin"

" In others, Lastly, systemic medications prescribed for dermatological diseases, such as steroids, are known to raise the risk of other diseases, and dietary change may reduce this risk".

These results clearly suggested that by reducing intake of pro-inflammatory food such as fried and process foods and red meats and increasing certain anti-inflammatory foods such as tuna, salmon, garlic into your diet can be helpful in reducing the risk and treatment of skin diseases.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

The herbal plant is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or remedy for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers at examined all dermatology-oriented in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical trials on aloe vera preparations.

According to the 40 studies selected for the investigation, oral administration of aloe vera in mice is effective on wound healing in inducing the decrease of the number and size of papillomas.

Furthermore, injection of Aloe vera also exhibited anti-tumor and parasitic effects in reducing the incidence of tumors and leishmania parasitemia by >90% in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

The herbal medicine was found to exerted certain skin protective effects against psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, frostbite, burn, wound healing and inflammation.

Moreover, the topical gel from Aloe vera can be considered a biological vehicle and an anti-microbial and antifungal agent against skin infection and inflammation.

However, contrary to general belief, topical application of aloe vera was not effective in the prevention of radiation-induced injuries and sunburn or suntan protection.

The results firmly suggested that Aloe vera showed some promising results for diverse dermatologic conditions.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be used as a topical or oral administration agent for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of skin diseases, pending to the reconfirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
