Herbal Cayenne, the Anti Cancers Functional Food, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes a potential for reducing risk and treatment of cancers, some studies suggested.

Cancers are a class of chronic and medical conditions characterized by cells growth irregularly and disorderly.

Most cancers start on the surface of the inner lining of organ tissue. At this early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

At the later stage, most cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue via fluid and blood circulation.
As of today, researchers do not know the exact cause of cancer neither they know why people with the same health condition and family history, some are susceptible to DNA alternation in facilitating the onset of cancer, while others do not.

There are many prevalent risk factors associated with the cancer onset, depending on the primary location, including an increase of age, excessive alcohol consumption, exposure to chemical toxins and sunlight, and infectious pathogens.

Noticeably, in the study of "Dietary and Lifestyle Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer in Apparently Healthy Adults in Jordanian Hospitals" conducted by the joint investigation lead by the Jordan University of Science and Technology, Dr. Omran S, the led author said, "Colorectal cancer (CRC) risk is expected to continue rising due to dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyle, and other practices" and "Data was collected using a self-report questionnaire measuring sociodemographic characteristics, dietary habits, physical activity, and lifestyle risk factors of CRC. The mean age of participants was 57.0 ± 8.56 years. The majority of participants were male (71.8 %) and with less than secondary school formal education (60.7 %). The commonest risk factors for CRC among the participants were overweight or obesity (76.1 %), lack of exercise (71.6 %), limited consumption of vegetables (70.8 %), smoking (60.6 %), over-consumption of red meat (56.3 %), and diabetes mellitus (24.1 %)".

These results suggested that by following a healthy diet with less saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and more in fruits and vegetables and lifestyle, the risk of cancers can be reduced substantially.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The spicy herb has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

Chemical ingredients
The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

In the study to examine whether Capsaicin, a pungent phytochemical in a variety of red peppers processes an anti-proliferative effect on numbers of cancer, researchers at the Changhua Christian Hospital, launched an investigation of cell proliferation/viability and cytotoxicity of KB cells exposed to capsaicin.

On the human KB cancer cells, application of capsaicin exerted a significant effect in reducing cancer cell proliferation/viability and induced cell death in a dose-dependent manner compared to untreated control.d t

In cell cycle analysis, capsaicin inhibits cancer cell division n in cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase of KB cells.

Further analysis suggested that capsaicin growth inhibition of KB cells was attributed mostly in the induction of cell apoptosis, through disrupting the pathway associated with cancer cellular response in differentiation, proliferation, and survival.
Interestingly, in the concerns that diet pattern and selection may be associated with the risk of cancer onset, researchers at the Inst. of Cytology and Preventive Oncology (ICMR) launched an investigation to examine the effects of Indian diet's many unique dietary constituents, including spices like chili pepper, cloves, black pepper and black cumin on the cancers' risk.

Application of pungent spice including red pepper extract exerted a cell antiproliferative activity against the TE-13 (esophageal squamous cell carcinoma) cell line.

All extracts showed cytotoxic activity, but aqueous extracts of red pepper were found to be more potent than alcoholic extracts.

In morphological analysis, DAPI staining and DNA fragmentation assay, the aqueous extract of chili pepper at 300 μl/ml. demonstrated maximum cell death and apoptotic cell demise (88%) to occur within 24 hours compared to other pungent spicy extracts.

The finding suggested that herbal Cayenne containing a high amount of capsaicin may be considered a functional food and an adjunct therapy for reducing the risk of cancers with no side effects.

Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex agnus-castus), in the Prevention and Treatment of Cancers

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Chaste tree berry may have a potential effect in reducing risk and treatment of cancers, some studies proposed.

Cancer is the class of medical and chronic disease characterized by the irregular cells growth, that starts on the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the organ tissue.

At the later stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue through DNA alternation visa fluid and blood circulation.

The exact causes of cancer are unknown. As of today, researchers do not know why people with the same health and family history, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

According to the statistic provided by the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with some forms of cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, causing 1,790 death.

Epidemiologically, depending on the primary onset of the disease, the most common risk factors of cancer are aging, tobacco, sun exposure, radiation exposure, chemicals, and toxic substances, certain hormones therapy, and family history,

However, excessive alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight also are considered some major acquired risks of cancer.

Dr. Karen Basen-Engquis, the lead author in the concerns of obesity in risk of cancer wrote, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%.".

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region,

The queen herb has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an anaphrodisiac herb. It is considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts by taking it in a prolonged period of time.

There was a report that chaste tree berry stems and leaves used by women as bedding "to cool the heat of lust" during the time of the Thesmophoria.

In the findings a natural extract which proceeds anti-cancer potency, researchers at the launched an investigation to examine the anticancer extract preparation ethanol from dried ripened Vitex agnus-castus fruits growing in Israel (Vitex extract) against human uterine cervical canal fibroblast (HCF), human embryo fibroblast (HE-21), ovarian cancer (MCF-7), cervical carcinoma (SKG-3a), breast carcinoma (SKOV-3), gastric signet ring carcinoma (KATO-III), colon carcinoma (COLO 201), and small cell lung carcinoma (Lu-134-A-H) cells.

In the cell cultures, application of different concentration of Vitex extract after culture for 24 h (logarithmic growth phase) or 72 h (stationary growth phase), exerted a significant cytotoxic activity against all cell lines in logarithmic growth-phase cells, comp[ared to stationary growth-phase cells.

DNA fragmentation, an indication of cancer cells undergoing apoptosis was seen in SKOV-3, KATO-III, COLO 201, and Lu-134-A-H cells.

Furthermore, Vitex extract-treated KATO-III cells also inhibited the expression of heme oxygenase-1 and the active forms of caspases-3, -8 and -9 which play a critical role in the protection the cancer cell against cytotoxicity.

Dr. Ohyama K, the lead author, said, "(The) cytotoxic activity of Vitex extract may be attributed to the effect on cell growth, that cell death occurs through apoptosis, and that this apoptotic cell death may be attributed to increased intracellular oxidation by Vitex extract treatment".

In a human gastric signet ring carcinoma cell line, KATO-III. further analysis also suggested that application of ethanol extract of the dried ripe fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (Vitex) decrease the antioxidant enzyme produced by the cancer cells without affecting the levels of the level of GSSG, another indication of oxidative stress increased in the cancer cells.

The result indicated that, Vitex-induced apoptosis through intracellular oxidative stress and mitochondrial membrane damage through decreasing the antioxidant defense of the cancer cell lines.

Taken altogether, Chaste Tree Berry may be considered a functional food and adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of cancers, depending on the result of the large and multi-center studies in human consumption of the herb during the course of diseases.

Papaya, the Pharmacological Target Anti High Blood Cholesterol Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may be considered a functional food of high blood cholesterol with inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or from the intake of dietary sources plays an important role in the building of cell membranes in transmitting information among cells and making steroid hormones, fat-soluble vitamins, and bile acids for digestive system need.

There are 2 major types of cholesterol,
* Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are also known as“bad” cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can block the arteries, causing heart disease. and

* High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are known as“good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol removes bad cholesterol from other parts of your body and carries them back to the liver.

The healthy ratio of total cholesterol is 4 (bad cholesterol)/1(good cholesterol). If you total blood cholesterol is lower than 4, you are considered a have a healthy level of blood cholesterol.

The Mayo Clinic in the article talking about diet and lifestyle effect in high blood cholesterol wrote, "Poor diet. Eating saturated fat, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, can raise your cholesterol level. Foods that are high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will also increase your total cholesterol".

Therefore, by change your diet pattern with more in fruits, whole grain and vegetables and less in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food, and following a healthy lifestyle with moderate exercise, you should be free of the syndrome of high blood cholesterol, regardless of your present conditions.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongs to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents of papaya include
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.

In the reaffirming of the traditional use of Ficus carica (papaya) for the treatment of several metabolic syndrome-related health problems, researchers at the University of Florida launched an investigation to examine the preventive effects of a Ficus carica (FC) leaf extract on hyperlipidemia in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese male rats.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats (180-200 g) were fed with a regular diet, HFD or a HFD + oral treatment of either 50 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg of FC or 30 mg/kg pioglitazone for six weeks.

At the final report, researchers found that
* Oral administration of FC exerts a significantly anti hyperlipidemia effect by lowered triglycerides (TG), interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the tested animal.
* The effects of FC on lipid parameters are more pronounced in treated rats than those of the positive control pioglitazone.

* FC treatment group also significantly lowered atherogenic index (AI) and the coronary risk index (CRI). the indications of the decreased risk of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.

Dr. Joerin L, the lead author said, "preventive treatment with FC significantly improved the lipid profile and decreased adipogenic risk factors in HFD rats most likely mediated through an increase in HDL-C levels".

Additionally, in the evaluate the effects of the fruit and latex of papaya used in the folk medicine for treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experience to examine the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of the ether- and water-soluble fractions of C. papaya ethanol extract in olive oil-induced hyperlipidemic rats.

The extract and fractions were administered orally at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight in rats. Olive oil (5 mL/kg oral dose) was administered 30 min after treatment.

Oral administration of papaya extract in a dose-dependently inhibited the total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) level, and significantly increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level.

Papaya also exerted a significant acute effect on HDL level and TC and TG elevation induced by olive oil.

These results suggested that papaya extract and water fraction showed protective action by increasing the HDL cholesterol level and lowering the levels of HDL level and TC and TG elevation in hyperlipidemic rats.

Taken all together, papaya may be considered a functional food for treatment of high blood cholesterol.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of papaya antihyperlipidemic possibility.

Banana, the Potent Anti Diabetes Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Unripe banana may be considered a functional for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, some scientists suggested.

Diabetes is a medical and condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose as the results of either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system or immune
system mistakenly attacks the cells which produce insulin, leading to insulin resistance.

The death of beta cells in the pancreas is triggered by massive overproduction of short strands of ribonucleic acid, known as microRNA (miR) 200. These result suggested that blocking miR-200 may guarantee the survival of beta cells, even ones under extreme stress.

In case of pancreas clogged up with fat accumulation, some researchers found that losing less than one gram of that fat through weight loss reverses diabetes.

Professor Taylor of Newcastle University said, “So if you ask how much weight you need to lose to make your diabetes go away, the answer is one gram! But that gram needs to be far from the pancreas. At present, the only way we have to achieve this is by calorie restriction by any means – whether by diet or an operation.

”In patients who had started with Type 2 diabetes, fat levels in the pancreas (pancreatic triglyceride) decreased by 1.2% over the 8 weeks. Very exact methods were needed to be able to measure this and a new method using a special MRI scan was developed. With an average pancreas for a person with Type 2 diabetes having a volume of 50 ml, this is the equivalent of around 0.6 grams of fat.

According to the study by ETH Zurich and the International Diabetes Foundation, there are over 380 million diabetics around the world. Approximately,  by the year 2030, over half a billion people will be suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belonging to the family of the lily and the orchid.

In the study to reaffirming of the traditional use of banana for treatment of diabetes in India, researchers at the University College of Medical Sciences, Dilshad Garden launched an investigation to assess the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of the stem of the banana. In the experiment, diabetes was induced in rats by streptozotocin injection (45 mg/kg, i.p.). Diabetic rats were treated for 2 weeks with different doses of lyophilized stem juice of banana. (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) to select the most effective dose.

* The most effective dose of lyophilized stem juice of M. sapientum Linn (Banana) was 50 mg/kg.

* The four weeks treatment with this dose resulted in significant decreases in fasting and postprandial plasma glucose (FPG, PPG) levels.

* Serum insulin increased (P < 0.05) whereas HbA1c decreased (P < 0.05).

* Diabetes-induced changes to the lipid profile, muscle and liver glycogen, and enzyme activity (i.e. glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphatase, and HMG-CoA reductase) were restored near to normal levels by the application of banana.

These results suggested that lyophilized stem juice of banana (M. sapientum Linn) exhibits antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects.

Furthermore, in the study to find out the mechanism of hypoglycemic effect by ethanol extract of banana pseudostem (EE) researchers suggested
* The ethanol extract of banana significantly inhibited mammalian intestinal α-glucosidases and yeast α-glucosidase.

* Oral administration (100-200 mg kg(-1) body weight) of EE significantly suppressed the maltose/glucose-induced postprandial plasma glucose elevation and wielded an antihyperglycaemic effect in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

Dr. Ramu R, the lead scientist said, "EE might exert an anti-diabetic effect by inhibition of α-glucosidases from the intestine, in turn suppressing the carbohydrate absorption into the bloodstream. Hence the results extend a foundation for the future prospects of the food-derived enzyme inhibitors in the treatment of diabetes".

Additionally, according to the Central Food Technological Research Institute, banana flower and pseudostem have a low glycemic index and have a high content of dietary fiber and antioxidants.

Application fo the flower and pseudostem showed to inhibit diabetic symptoms like hyperglycemia, polyuria, polyphagia, polydipsia, urine sugar, and body weight in the rat model.

Taken all together, unripe banana may be used as a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for treatment of diabetes in the human,  depending on the confirmation of further data collection from the large example size and multi-center studies.

Apricots, May Be the Next Generation Chemo Alternative Anti Liver Cancer Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Apricot, a functional food may be the next pharmaceutical target for the finding of an effective medicine with potential in the treatment of liver cancer, some scientists suggested.

Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the liver tissue.
What causes the mutation of liver cell DNA is unknown. However, according to the epidemiological studies, cancer originated from the liver are associated with livers damaged by birth defects, alcohol abuse, or chronic infection with diseases such as hepatitis B and C, hemochromatosis.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the advanced form of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). are one of the major risk factor associated with significant liver damage or the increased risk of liver cancer.

Unhealthy diet pattern and lifestyle also can contribute to the early onset of liver cancer. therefore making positive lifestyle choices such as Not smoking, eating a healthy diet and keeping physically active are some of the ways which can reduce the risk of liver cancer.

The World Cancer Reserve Fund wrote," There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese is a cause of liver cancer, consuming approximately three or more alcoholic drinks a day is a cause of liver cancer, and consuming foods contaminated by aflatoxins (toxins produced by certain fungi) is a cause of liver cancer".

Men are about 3 times more likely than women to be diagnosed with the disease

According to the statistic, in the US., an estimated 30,610 men and 11,610 women will be diagnosed with primary liver cancer, causing the deaths of 20,540 men and 9,660 women.

The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belonging to the family Rosaceae.

Apricot is classified in the family of the plum with yellow to orange, often tinged red on the side which is exposed to the sun.

Chemical constituents of apricot include
Oleic acid, linoleic acid, palmitic.acid, glycolipids, phospholipids, benzoic acid (I), isorhamnetin (II), quercetin (III), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (IV), isorhamnetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (V), isoquercitrin (VI), hypericin (VII) and rutin (VIII)(a) and flavonoid glycosides.

In the assessment of MK615, an anti-cancer substance extracted from the Japanese apricot, researchers at the Dokkyo University School of Medicine conducted an investigation to examine the anti-neoplastic effect of MK615 against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Observation of the assays from 2 HCC lines, HuH7 and Hep3B, were cultured with MK615 at concentrations of 600, 300, 150, and 0 microg/mL found that
* MK615 inhibited the growth of, and lysed, HuH7 and Hep3B cells in a dose-dependent manner

* MK615 decreased the population of cells in G2/M phase, according to the Cell cycle analysis.

* MK615 suppressed the expression of the function of Aurora A. associated with cancer cell proliferation by 34.3%, 32.9%, and 54.3% at 150, 300, and 600 microg/mL MK615, respectively.

Dr. after taking into account co and confounders said, "(These results suggested that) MK615 has an anti-cancer effect against HCC lines in vitro, and the effect is exerted through inhibition of Aurora-A activity".

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the clinical effects and feasibility of administering MK615 for patients with HCC recurred in the liver 8 mo after the surgery.in a 60-year-old female with advanced HCC, researchers found that
* Radiofrequency ablation and transarterial infusion chemotherapy were performed but the recurrence was not controlled and one year after the intrahepatic recurrence, pulmonary and lymph metastasis reappeared.

* Administration of chemo drug Sorafenib was not effective.

* MK615 was administered as a final alternative therapy after informed consent was obtained from the patient.

3 months of MK615 injection exerted a significant effect in decreasing her alpha-fetoprotein level and sizes of both the lymph node and pulmonary metastases. The patient has survived for more than 17 mo after the MK615 administration.

These results suggested that MK615 is effective against advanced liver cancer metastases.

Taken all together, apricot may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy for the treatment of liver cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food apricot during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of apricot anti-liver cancer possibilities.

Ginger Processes Anti Cancer Potential, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent kitchen spice which processes the potency for the prevention and treatment of cancers, some studies found.

Cancer is the class of chronic illness characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably on some tissue and organs in the body.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissue or organs in the early stage.

Most patients in this stage depending on the type of cancer do not experience any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, as the tumor has penetrated deeply into the layers of tissue, most cancer can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

At this stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The exact causes of cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies, depending on the type of cancer suggested that aging, sun exposure, radiation exposure, toxic chemicals viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer are some most common prevalent risk factors of cancer.

Some researchers suggested. obesity or overweight, poor diet, and lifestyle are the most common preventable risk factors associated with cancer onset in the US.

According to the statistic, approximately:over 200,000 new cancer diagnoses and 80,800 deaths from cancer in Canada in 2017.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer are accounted for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths.

About 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease.

In the concern of the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide and a link between obesity and cancer is growing, Dr. Karen Basen-Engquis, the lead author launched an investigation to examine the obesity and cancer risk.

At the final report of the experiment, the team said, " Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%." and "Additionally, studies of patients who have had bariatric surgery for weight loss report reductions in cancer incidence and mortality, particularly for women".

And, "Numerous cohort studies, summarized in systematic reviews, have shown a link between obesity and cancer incidence overall and for selected cancer sites (eg, endometrial, postmenopausal breast, colon, and esophageal adenocarcinoma)".

These results clearly suggested the risk of cancer is elevated in obese and overweight population compared to healthy weight individuals.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural whole food for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, researchers looked into the ginger antiemetic and anticancer activities.

By examing the phytochemistry, bioactivity, and molecular targets of ginger constituents, especially 6-shogaol, researchers suggested that the content of 6-shogaol found very low in fresh ginger, but significantly higher after steaming exerts a significant anti-cancer activity.
Dr. Wang CZ, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "6-shogaol can be served as a lead compound for new drug discovery" and " The lead compound derivative synthesis, bioactivity evaluation, and computational docking provide a promising opportunity to identify novel anticancer compounds originating from the ginger".

Furthermore, in the examination of the plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles, a promising substitution and exhibit anti-cancer biocompatibility through oral, intranasal administration, researchers looked into ligands from the ginger.

Application of ligands from the ginger demonstrated an anticancer effect by the ability to exhibit the gene expression in T-cells with siRNAs through activating innate immune responses.

These results suggested that ligands on ginger derived exosome-like nanovesicles (GDENs) inhibit tumor growth on a xenograft model by intravenous administration.

Taken together, ginger processed ligands on ginger derived exosome-like nanovesicles (GDENs)and 6-shogaol may be considered a function for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of cancer without inducing adverse effects.

Manaku Honey, the Potential Cartilage Repair Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a golden liquid for the treatment of cartilage damage without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Cartilage is an important structural component placed in the joints of bone with a function to prevent the end of the bone collided from one to another.

Cartilage is a firm tissue but is softer and much more flexible than bone.

Due to the lack of blood vessels connected to the cartilage to supply the chondrocytes with nutrients, repairing the damage of cartilage are more slowly than other tissues.

Cartilage repair is an act is to restore the surface of an joint cartilage. However, how sufficiency of the works is totally depending on the degree of the damage.

In conventional medicine, cartilage damage due to a single injury, or lesion can be repaired successfully. However, with many lesions in one joint, are less likely to benefit from the surgery. cartilage, particularly in older population.

In the article "Articular Cartilage Restoration", the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons wrote, "Many procedures to restore articular cartilage are done arthroscopically" and "Some procedures require the surgeon to have more direct access to the affected area. Longer, open incisions are required. Sometimes it is necessary to address other problems in the joint, such as meniscal or ligament tears when cartilage surgery is done"

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient or whole food for the cartilage repair in replacement of that conventional medicine with no side effects, researchers at a number of institutes conducted a joint study to evaluate the nature-derived hydrogels, a promising class of scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering, mimicking the native cellular microenvironment.

Manuka honey made hydrogels able to inhibit the proliferation of S. aureus and S. epidermidis clinical isolates and no cytotoxic effects were detected on human mesenchymal stem cells seeded on the hydrogels.

Manuka honey initiated a consistent expression of collagen II and high synthesis of
Sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans, thus indicating the formation of the cartilage matrix.

Where Sulfated glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans are considered promising artificial extracellular matrix components to improve the regeneration of tissues, such as cartilage repair.

These results suggested Manuka honey processes a similar action as those of synthetic substances used for the treatment to improve cartilage regeneration.

In order to understand the effect of Manuka honey in cartilage repair, researcher launched a differentiation of the research paper "Antibacterial effectiveness meets improved mechanical properties: Manuka Honey/Gellan Gum composite hydrogels for cartilage repair", Bonifacio et al.

And suggested that before Manuka honey can be used for the treatment of cartilage repair, there are some criteria must be met. you can view them at the sources

Due to the limitation of the study, therefore, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Manuka honey cartilage repair possibilities.
