* Chaste Tree Berry,The Herbal Remedy That Protects and Restores Internal Eye Structures Against Cataract Formation, Scientists Showed

Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Today, many whole herb ingredients worked together in herbal plants were proven effective in reduced risk and treatment of various diseases with little or no side effects by many respectable scientists through intensive research and studies. However, intake of synthetic version of single ingredient isolated from such plants may produce opposite outcomes.

Recent study suggested that chaste Tree Berry may be used to protect the internal structures of the eyes against selenite induced cataractogensis.

Selenite cataract is a rapidly-induced, convenient model for the study of age related (senile) cataract.

Selenite, named from the Ancient Greek word for the Moon. is a crystal like substance of mineral gypsum, composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. It is one of Chinese herb used for treatment of heat and fire syndromes.

Long term contact with the crystal may cause side effects of headache, unstable emotional expression,..... and dizziness.

Cataractogensis is a process of cataract formation.

Cataract, one of common vision loss in people over age 40 and a leading cause of blindness, is a condition of blur vision caused by clouding of the lens in one or both eye(s).

According to statistic provided by Laser Eye Surgery Hub, In England, 30% of people 65 years or older have a visually impairing cataract in one or both eye(s). 10% of people 65 or over had already had cataract surgery. 95% of cataracts are age-related, usually after age 40.

There are many causes of cataract, some researchers suggested that aging and injury that cause the changes the tissue made up the eye's lens, past eye surgery or medical conditions such as diabetes are the common causes of the disease.

However, some inherited genetic disorders such as chromosome abnormalities, Lowe syndrome,,,,
and neurofibromatosis type 2, also are associated to increase risk of cataracts too.

Belief or not, cataracts can also be caused by other eye conditions.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belongings to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region.

The herb has been  used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to the University of Kerala, flavonoids found in the chaste tree berry  exerted cataract protective effect in prevented damage of lenticular membrane and abnormal fiber structure in patient with cataract viewed through electron microscopy.

Furthermore, the study also found that chaste tree berry expresses a significant improvement of chaperone property of α-crystallin and soluble protein levels in two dimensional-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and immunoblot analysis.

α-crystallin, a structural lens proteins plays an important role in protected the eyes against formation of eye diseases, including cataract.

Dr. Rooban BN, the lead author said, " FVN modulated selenite induced cataractogensis in rat pups by preventing loss of chaperone property, various changes in lens proteins, and lens structure, further strengthening its protective role".

Some researchers suggested that the efficacy of chaste tree berry in reduced risk and treatment of cataract may be a result of phytochemical antioxidants activity in scavenge free radicals that cause  oxidative stress, loss of calcium homeostasis, calpain activation and protein insolubilization.

More importantly, in a study of eight-day-old Sprague-Dawley rat pups divided into four groups: Control (G I), Sodium selenite-induced (G II), Sodium selenite+quercetin treated (G III), Sodium selenite+flavonoids from Vitex negundo (FVN) (G IV), group fed with sodium selenite+flavonoids showed normal levels of expression of lens of water soluble proteins in compared to other groups.

In fact, pups treated with FVN was found to exhibit the antioxidant effects in modulating biochemical parameters against selenite-induced cataract, the University of Kerala insisted.

In support to the above differentiation, the Sprague-Dawley rat pups of 8 days old divided into control (G I), selenite induced (G II), and selenite + V. negundo treated (G III) with cataract induced by the single subcutaneous injection of sodium selenite (4 mg/kg body weight) on the tenth day and V. negundo (2.5 mg/Kg body weight) administered intraperitoneally from eighth to 15th day study, researchers showed that group III  exert significantly reduced activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, lower level of reactive oxygen species, Ca(2+), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance.

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may process of therapeutic potential used for prevention of changes of internal eye structures that stimulated onset of cataract and treatment of cataract with little adverse effects.

However, additional large sample size and multi center clinical trials with human consumption during the course of the disease are necessary to re confirm chaste tree berry anti cataract possibility.

However, avocados also cause some adverse effects that are not clearly illustrated, according medical literature.

It is my advice that everyone who enjoys the fruit occasionally and daily should fully understand the health benefits and the adverse effects of avocados, particularly people who have liver problem or currently are taking conventional medicine to treat chronic ailments and women who are pregnant or breast feeding.

Side effects of avocado
1. Skin product of avocado oils may contain latex which can cause skin side effect in people with hypersensitivity.

Symptoms of hypersensitivity to latex.include reddening of the skin, itching, hives, or eczema.

In serious case, the latex can induce anaphylactic response, causing swelling of the airways and difficulty of breathing.

According to the Hospital Universitario Insular, the nature of latex is complex, it is an allergenic mixture that depends on chemical, immunological and epidemiological variables.

Latex proteins show strong cross reactivity with several proteins from fruit and vegetable grains. including avocado(1).

Washing the avocado with a food-safe wash to the remove chemicals from the skin can be helpful.

2. Liver damage
Avocado may cause liver damage as a result of collagen accumulation in the liver

According to the study using V79 cells and Swiss mice conducted by the joint investigation lead by the Universidade de Franca, injection of the highest fruit pulp oil of P. americana (PAO) dose showed a significant increase of the levels of aspartate aminotransferase, the indication of hepatic/tissue damage.

Dr. Nicolella HD, lead scientists said, "This effect may be related to high concentrations of palmitic acid, the main component of PAO"(2).

3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Avocado may be unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

According to medical literature, eating avocado during pregnancy and breast feeding may reduce milk production(5).

Some researchers even suggested that intake of avocado (no quantity given) may also cause damage to the mammary gland.(5)

Breast feeding mother consumed avocado in large amount can cause problems of upset stomachs to the baby.

4. Drugs Interaction
According to the standardized approach to elucidate the use of herbal medicines and their linked interaction with conventional medicine study, lead the the Makerere University College of Health Sciences, use of herbal medicine including Persea americana may cause adverse drug reactions(3).

Furthermore, Avocado may interact with"blood thinning" medicine.

In the review of possible interactions that may occur between Warfarin and fruit study, researchers found that avocado may interact with Warfarin, the anticoagulant (blood thinner)(4).

5. Persin toxicity
It may cause symptoms of gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation due to toxic fatty acid derivative, persin(5).

Please make sure you know all these side effects for preventive measure.

How Cayenne Enhances Weight Loss Effectively

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

The prevalence of obesity is widespread in the Western world. In the US, approximately 68% of the population is either overweight or obese.

The findings of weight loss from the botanic plant with little or no side effects have gone under extensive research.

Cayenne, the kitchen spice may have a profound effect in enhanced weight loss, some researchers suggested.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat has accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

Weight loss is an intentional reduction of the total body mass through the context of diet, exercise, and medicine such as FDA-approved prescription medications, orlistat (Xenical, Alli), lorcaserin (Belviq), phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave), and liraglutide (Saxenda).

Although approved medicine may be effective if the person who takes the drug also follow a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, however, it may induce side effects of weakness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, itching, loss of appetite, or jaundice (liver toxicity).

In severe cases, intake of the drug may cause severe lower back pain, blood in your urine, drowsiness, confusion, mood changes, increased thirst; swelling,...... and short of breath.

If you are taking the weight to lose approved pills, please make sure that you discuss the side effect with your doctor in advance.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne Pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belongings to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine to increase metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The Phyto Ingredients
The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsacutin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid,..... and palmitic acid.

Capsaicinoids are major bioactive chemical compounds found in cayenne, in the study to review its effectiveness in weight management, the Manchester Metropolitan University conducted a selection of 20 trials which satisfied the criteria and guideline were selected involving 563 participants.

Most trials were generally of high quality with a low risk of bias, however, trial duration, dosage and sized varied.

Observation and differentiation of these studies suggested that application of capsaicinoids induce weight loss and weight management by(1)
* Increased energy expenditure by approximately 50 kcal/day, these results would produce clinically significant levels of weight loss in 1-2 years.

* Reduced abdominal adipose tissue levels and reduced appetite and energy intake, and

* Increased lipid oxidation to induce weight loss. Decrements in fatty acid oxidation were associated with obesity.

Dr. Whiting S, the lead scientists at the final report of the study said, "The mechanism of action is not presently fully understood, although it is well accepted much of the effects are caused by stimulation of the TRPV1 receptor (which plays an essential role to induce weight loss through direct impact on enhancing intracellular Ca2+ levels in initiated fat lipid oxidation)".

Further analysis of capsaicinoids weight loss in search of related studies medical data that found 74 clinical trials identified, with only 10 selected, 8 of which provided results suitable to be combined in analysis (191 participants) and 19 effect sizes extracted and analysed using MIX meta-analysis software conducted by the study led by the School of Healthcare Science, suggested that capsaicinoid ingestion prior to a meal reduced ad libitum energy intake by 309.9kJ (74.0kcal) during the meal(2).

The study also found that a minimum dose of  2mg of capsaicinoids is needed to contribute to weight management through reductions in energy intake(2).

These results were attributed to capsaicinoids efficacy in altered carbohydrate-rich foods that have a significant impact in reduced fat oxidation in the induction of weight gain(2)

Dr. said, "daily consumption of capsaicinoids may contribute to weight management through reductions in energy intake. Subsequently, there may be potential for capsaicinoids to be used as long-term, natural weight-loss aids".

Intake of herbal Cayenne or its supplements should only be prescribed by herbalist as acute ingestion of a large number of chili peppers (the rich source of capsaicin) was found to induce produced
hypertension in some patients(3).

Black Bean, The Legume That Suppresses the Early Onset of Liver Fibrosis

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Black or common bean may be potential function food used to suppress the progression of liver
fibrosis and protect the liver against the onset of the disease, researchers suggested.

Liver fibrosis is a medical condition characterized by advanced liver scars that take over most tissue of the liver organ, causing liver inability to perform its normal function.

In compared to cirrhosis, liver fibrosis is a moderate case of liver disease.

The disease is caused by infection of hepatitis virus. However, not all people with the virus will develop
liver fibrosis.

Since liver fibrosis is a very slowly progressive disease, people who carry the disease may not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.

Truly, people who consume excessive alcohol and carry the hepatitis virus may not develop the diseases until their later life.

Some researchers suggested that besides the hepatitis virus, liver fibrosis can also be caused by the accumulation of toxins that take years to damages the liver such as excessive alcohol intake,.environment toxins, liver injury,......and a medical condition such as alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic liver disease, biliary obstruction,.. and iron overload.

Symptoms of liver fibrosis include appetite loss, difficulty thinking clearly, fluid in the abdomen, bleeding in the intestines, unexplained weight loss, weakness,..... and poor blood clotting.

According to a statistic from John Hopskin Medicine(2),
* Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death in the U.S. Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cirrhosis.

* Approximately 3.5 to 4.6 million people in the U.S. are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus. About 2,000 people die of hepatitis C annually in the U.S.
And,
* Hepatitis B kills approximately 2,000 people in the U.S. annually, and 85,000 to 2.2 million people in the U.S. are infected with the virus.

Black bean, small roughly ovoid legumes with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae, first domesticated growth in South America.

The black legume can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms.

According to the Tecnológico de Monterrey, School of Medicine, Basic Research Laboratory, oral administrated black bean extract exerted a significantly decreased type I and type IV collagen gene expression(1).

Type I and type IV collagen were associated to the early event in the development of hepatic fibrosis, particularly, in the early marked increase in the mRNA for type IV collagen. (3).

In eight weeks of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injury in a rat model, black bean extract of 70 mg/kg treatment showed a reduced hepatic fibrosis index by 18% in compared to positive controls(1).

The study also indicated that the efficacy of black bean extract in ameliorated risk of liver fibrosis due to injury may be attributed to legume strong antifibrotic compounds that inhibit the increased inflammatory and oxidative burst in liver fibrosis(1).

Furthermore, in the application of 0.1 g of crude biomass obtained from seed coats of Perla black bean dissolved in 400 mL of H2 O,, and 100 g of NaCl added in liver injury mice model, back bean treatment in both group expressed evidence of improvement of pathological changes, including interstitial fibrosis, inflammatory infiltration, collagen deposition and steatosis in compared to normal group(1).

Histological analysis showed that the test group presented a significant reduction of collagen deposition of which exhibited a reduced risk of developed liver scaring in the recovery phase (1).

Antioxidant effect against liver intoxication, a widely used laboratory application in induced lipid peroxidation and trichloromethyl radical (CCl3 ), to cause severe liver cell damage in an animal model, may represent a new perspective in liver injury and fibrosis prevention, the researcher concluded.

Taking together, black bean, contains various phytochemicals, such as naringenin, Nacetylcysteine, vitamin E, silymarin, quercetin in exhibited antioxidant activity, may be considered as an integrated form of diet therapy for liver protection and suppressing liver fibrosis.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of black bean anti-liver fibrosis possibilities.

* Black Bean, The Potent Legume Which Inhibits Early Onset and Progression of Chronic Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending to stages of the treatment which directly address the cause of disease.

Intake black bean regularly may have a potential effect in attenuated risk and treatment of chronic diseases.

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last at least 3 months. In all cases, according to conventional medicine, the diseases cannot heal themselves, be prevented by vaccines injection nor cured by medication.

Most common chronic diseases in the Western world include cancers, arthritis, heart attacks, and stroke. Ans most common types of cancer are breast and colon cancer, diabetes, epilepsy and seizures,..... and obesity.

According to statistic, almost one out of every two U.S. adults having at least one of six chronic illnesses. In other words, chronic conditions affect over 107 million people.

The Public Health and Chronic Disease wrote, " Seven out of 10 deaths among Americans each year are from chronic diseases. Heart disease, cancer, and stroke account for more than 50% of all yearly deaths" and "Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-injury lower-limb amputations, and blindness among 20 to 74-year-olds".

In 2008, chronic diseases cost over  $147 billion annually in the US. and costs by $218 billion per year and reduce the economic impact of disease by $1.1 trillion annually.

As of today, health care coverage costs for people with a chronic condition average $6,032 annually, that is five times higher than for those without such a condition, the Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases suggested.

The statistician of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated, chronic diseases
* are the leading cause of death worldwide.
* Ischemic heart disease alone was responsible for about 9.43 million deaths in 2016.
* However, all cardiovascular diseases together cause over 17.8 million deaths annually worldwide followed by cancers.

If you experience some chronic conditions that do not heal over 3 months, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The causes of chronic diseases are depended to a specific condition, however, some researchers suggested that a small set of common risk factors may be responsible for most of the main chronic diseases, including unhealthy diet and lifestyle, physical inactivity;.... and smoking

Others indicated that chronic diseases may also be initiated by some intermediate risk factors such as blood pressure, high blood cholesterol,.........., overweight and obesity.

Black bean is a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae,  first cultivated in South America.

The beans can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms.

According to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, the efficacy of legume in reduced chronic illness risk may be attributed to antioxidant phytochemical activities and other responses that influence the classification to types of diseases such as diabetes, CVD and cancer.

Dr. Hutchins AM, the lead scientist said, "Consumption of Phaseolus vulgaris bean species such as black beans,,,,,,,,,, may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. In particular, conditions that are promoted by increased glycaemic stress (hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia) including diabetes, CVD and cancer seem to be reduced in individuals who eat more of these beans"(1).

In protein and four synthesized pure peptides isolated Mexican black and Brazilian Carioca bean, researchers showed that application of purified peptides has a potential and therapeutic effect to serve as antidiabetic and antihypertensive agents in an animal model, regardless of their antioxidant capacity(2).

In details(2),
* Carioca Perola bean digested proteins processed the highest antioxidant capacity.
* Both beans and their peptides are potent against dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) which is associated to the onset of diabetes and Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) that is associated to cancer risk.
In fact, according to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, types of carbohydrates found in black bean may be associated with a low glycemic response, low serum cholesterol levels, and a decrease of colon cancer risk factors as well as other forms of in chronic diseases such as diabetes type II and cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Serrano J, the lead author, after taking into accounts of other co and confounder wrote, " These physiological effects in the treatment of chronic diseases may be related to colonic fermentation end products (propionic and butyric acids) (found in black beans)"(3).

Furthermore, black beans also contain several "antinutritional" compounds (enzymatic inhibitors, haemaglutenins, saponins and phytic acid(3), which may have potential effects by acting as an antioxidant against early onset and progression of chronic diseases.

Collectively, black bean reduced risk and treatment of chronic illness are the results of improved antioxidant status and other mechanisms, including reduction of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, lower levels of LDL and Raised HDL as well as protecting pancreatic ß-cells, ...

Taking together, there is no doubt that black bean may be used as functional foods in attenuated risk and treatment of chronic disease, through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative cardioprotective..... activities.

Green Tea, The Beverage That Suppresses Osteoarthritis

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Regular drinking of green tea may have a positive effect in suppressed conditions that causes osteoarthritis, some study by respectable institute suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA), is a form of arthritis characterized by aging progression of wear and tear on a joint, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

Osteoarthritis is the single most common cause of disability in older adults. The disease even with today medical and  technological invention remains a serious health crisis in US and a global epidemic, too.

The 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study reports, according to the World health Organization (WHO), in assessments of world wide 6.8% musculoskeletal disorders population, 10% to 15% of all adults aged over 60 have some degrees of OA, with prevalence higher among women than men(4)..

Continuously, the WHO wrote, "The prevalence of OA is increasing due to population ageing and an increase in related factors such as obesity. According to the United Nations, by 2050 people aged over 60 will account for more than 20% of the world’s population" and  "by 2050, 130 million people will suffer from OA worldwide, of whom 40 million will be severely disabled by the disease.6 Costs associated with OA include costs for adaptive aids and devices, medicines, surgery, and time off at work"(4)

Some researchers suggested that the prevalence of OA will be increased substantially, if the organization is taking into account of increased obesity risk of Asian population, due to over 30 years of economic prosperity that influence many people who have made a lot of money to replace  traditional Asian diet with  American diet that is high on carbohydrate and saturated fat and trans fat.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis are associated to aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty moving the joint  that may develop in one or more joints. The pain usually gets worse in change of weather at night and in the advanced of the diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

If you experience all of above symptoms, you may have osteoarthritis.

Gene inherited from parent, extreme over weight, previous joints injure, over use and patients with bone and joint disorders are most common causes and risk of factors of the disease.

Moreover, abnormal biomechanics, age-related sarcopenia and increased bone turnover may also contribute to the development of OA.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In a randomized open-label active-controlled clinical trial of 50 adults with osteoarthritis of knee allocated to receive the green tea extract (in dosage form of tablet) plus diclofenac tablet as "intervention group"; or: diclofenac tablet alone as "control group" for a period of four weeks, researchers at the joint study lead by the Fasa University of Medical Sciences found that combination treated group exerted a significant improvement of physical function in compared to control(1).

Green tea extract and diclofenac tablet treatment group also expressed a progress in pain reduction during knee joint physical function in adults with osteoarthritis as in control group(1).

Dr. Hashempur MH, at the end of experiment period said, " ...green tea extract might well be considered as an adjunctive treatment both for control of pain and for the betterment of knee joint physical function in adults with osteoarthritis".

Additionally, in the compared the effect of curcuminoids extract, hydrolyzed collagen and green tea extract, in chondrocytes culture cells, researchers found that combination of all components score a enormous expression of reduced production of pro inflammatory cytokines through various mechanisms, including ameliorated free radical elucidation(2).

In human chondrocytes (cells that secreted the matrix of cartilage) and in the absence of interleukin 1β, combination with hydrolyzed collagen and green tea extract significantly inhibited matrix metalloproteinase-3 production which has a direct impact in denatured type I collagen(collagen fibers)(2).

Furthermore, in the presence of proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 1β, the combined application was significantly more efficient in inhibited interleukin-1β stimulated matrix metalloproteinase-3 expression than any individual extract.

Interleukin 1β, a protein is an important mediator of the immune systematic inflammatory response in acute phase of infection through its function as a proinflammatory cytokine to protect our body against foreign organism invasion(2).

Most importantly, all other factors that have contributed to the onset of osteoarthritis such as chondrocytes, nitric oxide, interleukin-6 were also inhibited by the combined injection, according to the record reported by Dr. Comblain F, the lead scientist(2).

In the support of the above differentiation, the study in the investigation of a posttraumatic osteoarthritis (OA) mouse model tested with EGCG against progression of OA and relieve OA-associated pain, researchers suggested that EGCG-treated mice promoted cartilage production against Safranin O, staining of the knee joint cartilage loss and cartilage erosion in compared to control group with no treatment(3).

Cartilage of treated mice also displayed a significant reduction of gene in regulated degeneration of connective tissue and pathways that involve promotional of tissues inflammation(3).

Additionally, pain score of treated mice also exhibited a significant enhancement in compared control group(3).

Taking together, there is no doubt that green tea process a therapeutic and integrated form of treatment by suppressing the conditions that cause symptoms of pain and physical disability and onset of  osteoarthritis.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of green tea anti osteoarthritis possibilities.
