The Magic of Camellia Sinensis Leaves: Green Tea in Expression of Anti Influenza Activity

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea, the Camellia sinensis leaves may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced infectious risk by influenza, some scientists suggested.

Influenza, is also known s "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus
Green tea, is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

In the investigated the green tea effect in reduced risk of influenza viral overspreading in general population, researchers at the Yonsei University conducted a study to evaluate catechin derivatives with different alkyl chain length and aromatic ring substitutions at the 3-hydroxyl group synthesized from epigallocatechin (EGC) and (+)-catechin (C) activity against influenza virus.

According to the experiment, application of catechin derivatives, carrying moderate chain length (7-9 carbons) exerted a pronounced effect in inhibited over expression of the virus in compared to those with aromatic rings.

Interestingly, injection of the 5'-hydroxyl group did not significantly contribute to antiviral activity against trihydroxy benzyl moiety.

However, administration of both derivatives demonstrated an inhibitory effect for all six influenza subtypes tested including three major types of currently circulating human influenza viruses (A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B type), H2N2 and H9N2 avian influenza virus, through strongly inhibited adsorption of the viruses on red blood cell (RBC).

In vivo, the drivatives also expressed an impressive activity in restricted the growth of avian influenza virus with minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 5-10 microM far exceeding the dose of conventional medicine oseltamivir or M2 proton channel inhibitor amantadine with the same purposes.

Further analysis suggested that the derivatives isolated from actechin inhibited effect were attributed to the mediation and interaction with hemagglutinin (HA)/viral membrane at the initial stage of infection.

Dr. Song JM, the lead author, after taking account of all assessment said, "The broad spectrum activity against various subtypes of influenza viruses may complement the limitations of current antivirals and contribute for managing potentially emerging influenza pandemic".

Importantly, in the comparison of the theaflavins fraction (TF80%, with a purity of 80%) and three theaflavin (TF) derivatives potent inhibitory effects against influenza virus in vitro, scientists at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College indicated that application displayed a significant inhibitory effects on the HA of three different subtypes of influenza virus strains [A/PR/8/34(H1N1), A/Sydney/5/97(H3N2) and B/Jiangsu/10/2003] with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) values ranging from 9.27 to 36.55 μg/mL, probably though expression and interaction on HA as above differentiation.

Additionally, TF derivatives inhibited the over expression of viral particle infectivity consistently and corelatively with the inhibitory effect on HA.

According to the qPCR and  nuclear localization of the influenza virus vRNP assays, all applications exerted anti infectivity by interrupting the viral  replication and also decreased the production of inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in induction of serious tissue injury and apoptosis.

The above evaluation were supported by the Yonsei University study of the polyphenolic compound catechins ((-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC)) from green tea in inhibited influenza virus replication in cell culture and for potentially direct virucidal effect.

According to the results, among all compound selected in the assessment, EGCG and ECG were found to be potent inhibitors of influenza virus replication in MDCK( in a suitable transfection host  for influenza research) cell culture, including A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B virus, observed in all influenza virus subtypes tested. with 50% effective inhibition concentration (EC50) of EGCG, ECG, and EGC for influenza A virus at doses of 22-28, 22-40 and 309-318 microM.

The effective compounds EGCG and ECG also displayed an exhibited hemagglutination inhibition activity, similar to those in above studies.

Moreover, in compared to the EGCG and ECG anti influenza virus efficacy, researchers surprisingly found that at high concentration, EGCG + ECG also suppressed viral RNA synthesis in MDCK cells whereas EGC failed to show similar effect and EGCG + ECG inhibited the neuraminidase activity more effectively than the ECG.

These results reaffirmed the expression of green tea biocative polyphenols antiviral effect of catechins on influenza virus is mediated not only by specific interaction with HA, but  also alter the physical properties of viral membrane, Dr. Song JM, the lead author of the study suggested.

Taken together, green tea with abundant phytochemical polyphenols may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk, progression and treatment of infleunza infection.

Herbal Therapy: Green Tea and Its Bioactive Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in Ameliorated Risk, Progression and Treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Fclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk, progression and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), some scientists suggested.

Green tea is a precious drink processed numbers of health benefit and known to almost everyone in Asia and Western world.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a specific disease involved the death of neurons in controlling voluntary muscles.

According to the research published by the Hanyang University, administration of green tea Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) exerted a neuroprotective effect in reduced oxidative stress in orchestrated death of neurons.

In the evaluation of green tea EGCG in risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in human G93A(with function in responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body) mutated Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene in mice model, scientists found that
application of green tea EGCG at doses of 1.5, 2.9, and 5.8 microg/g body weight, dissolved in 0.5 ml of 0.9% sterile NaCl intraorally every day after 60 days of age demonstrate significant effects in prolonged the symptom onset  and life span of ALS mice through preserved more survival and attenuated death signals.

The result of increased life span of mutated gene mice was attributed to increased antioxidant activity of green tea in inhibited the levels of ROS in reduced cytotoxicity in initiated death of neurons in controlling voluntary muscles.

Further analysis of the effect of green tea in mutated SOD1-G93A in transgenic mice and wild-type mice randomly divided into EGCG-treated groups (10 mg/kg, p.o) and vehicle-treated control groups to assess the motor function, starting at the age of 70 days researchers found that injection of green tea treatment mice display a strong effect in delayed the onset of disease, and extended life span, similar to those in the Hanyang study.

Additional differentiation also indicated that green tea treatment group stimulated the production of numbers of new motor neurons in compared to control mice,

Interestingly, the application also decreased the over expression of microglial activation in initiated the inflammatory response due to neuronal damage and removed the damaged cells caused by phagocytosis production.

Prolonged and over expression of inflammatory cytokines may increase risk of neuron damage and in some cases death of the nerve cells.

Researchers in depth analysis showed that green tea reduced immunohistochemical reaction of NF-kappaB in response to the neuron damage (by antigens) through stimulated production of pro inflammatory factors (as antibody) and cleaved caspase-3 in induction of neuron apoptosis.

Moreover, application of green EGCG also expressed a similar result as in other studies in decreased protein level of iNOS and NF-kappaB in the spinal cords in orchestrated free radical NO levels and  inflammatory cytokines in neuron cell death in the spinal cord involving the onset of ALS.

Dr. Xu Z, the lead author after taking into account of other co founders said, "this study provides further evidences that EGCG has multifunctional therapeutic effects in the mouse model of ALS".

These result were supported by the study of the green tea effect in risk of Lou Gehrig's disease through reviewing the food selection of 44-item food frequency questionnaire of 1 million men and women enrolled and conducted in 1989 through 2002 for ALS mortality.

According to results of the study, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health suggested that green tea injection is associated to reduced mortality rate of patients.

The information findings suggested that green tea and its bioactive polyphenol Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a function food for reduced risk and used combination with standard medicine in delayed progression and treatment of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Herbal Therapy: Fennel, A Potent Functional Food for Treatment of Infantile Colic

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk of infantile colic, some scientists suggest.

Infantile colic is a reaction of the infant if episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child. The condition has strong impacted in psychological, emotional, and physical burden to parents.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

Nutrients
1. Carbohydrates
2. Fiber
3. Protein
4. Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
5. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
6. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
7. Pantothenic acid (B5)

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and side effects of phytotherapeutic agent with Matricariae recutita, Foeniculum vulgare and Melissa officinalis in treatment of infantile colic in a total of the 93 breastfed colicky infants conducted by the John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, after a 3 day observation period, the infants randomly assigned to groups treated with phytotherapeutic agent (PA) and group received placebo twice a day for 1 week, researchers found that crying time in group received PA was reduced substantially in 85.4%  of subjects in compared to 48.9% subjects in placebo group against baseline.

PA treatment group exerted no side effect during the period of experiment.

Base on the result, researchers suggested that PA  demonstrated a significant activity within one weeks of application in infantile colic.

Furthermore, the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postdoctoral Education in the concerns of the side effects of 5% of infants treated with dicyclomine hydrochloride, the only pharmacological treatment for infantile colic, with substantial side effects, including death, conducted a randomized placebo-controlled trial of 125 infants, 2 to 12 weeks of age from 2 large multi-specialty clinics by assigned them to either group treated with fennel or placebo, indicated that fennel treatment group improves the crying time episodes and frequency sidnificantly in compared to the placebo group.

According to the Wessel assay, infantile colic was reduced by 65% (40/62) in the treatment group in compared to only 23.7% (14/59) in placebo.

Further analysis also found that application of fennel induced a risk reduction of 41% in compared to placebo without causing any side effects.

Although the causes of infantile colic is unknown, some researchers suggested that the results of fennel in treatment of infantile colic may be attributed to its efficacy in the hypothetical conditions catalyzed by
*Abnormal gastro-intestinal function caused by imbalanced of bacterial ratio
According to the literature reported by the Swansea University, application of fennel essential oil have a sustainable effect in inhibited E. coli growth, observed by disc diffusion assays and in liquid culture.

These results were illustrated by the effect of an aqueous extract of the aerial part and aqueous extract of seed sample of fennel.

Fennel inhibited overgrowth of Agrobacterium radiobacter pv. tumefaciens, Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas fluorescens, andPseudomonas glycinea,  Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomona aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, and Bacillus cereus in maintenance integrity of digestive function.

Further differentiation also suggested that fennel has a strong impact in protected the gastric damage through significantly increased nitrite, nitrate, ascorbic acid, retinol, and beta-carotene levels.

Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead author, in the differentiation of fennel, in regard to the gastrointestinal effect, said, "Foeniculum vulgare is indicated in the treatment of spastic gastrointestinal disturbances, in some forms of chronic colitis (which resist other treatments), in dyspepsias from gastrointestinal atony, in dyspepsias with the sensation of heaviness in the stomach, and so forth. The addition of fennel to preparations containing anthraquinonic components reduces the occurrence of abdominal pain often associated with this type of laxative"

* In Psychological aspect of mother such as mother’s depression, anxiety and dis-tress during pregnancy in induction of infantile colic, although there are no direct literature to confirm the efficacy of fennel in treating syndromes of these group of women, but in the study of psychological symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome, application of fennel seed was associated in deceased depression and anxiety.

Also, in stress induced maternal anxiety and depression, application of fennel extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) showed a significant improvement of urinary levels of vanillyl mandelic acid(VMA) and ascorbic acid excretion levels in measurement of potentially psychological stress in fennel treatment group in compared to the normal group.

These results indicated that the extract of entire plant of F. vulgare pay have a potential effect by acting as an anti-stress agent in reduced depression and anxiety in maternity.

* In food allergic aspect, although there are no direct study in expression of fennel improved immune response against food allergy,.

Some researchers postulated that anethole, a bioactive compound from fennel inhibited food allergy probably through enhacing immune system food hypersensitivity response by modulating the expression of Foxp3+ in regulated the development and function T cells and inhibition of Th2 cytokines in promoted antibodies production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), thus reducing immune system overreacts to an allergen.

Taken together, the findings suggested that fennel may be considered as a function food for treatment of infantile colic, however, a large sample size and study by multi centers are necessary to reconfirm the viability.

Herbal Therapy: Herbal Arnica in Ameliorated Pain and Muscle Tenderness After Intensive Exercise?

Herbal Arnica may have a therapeutic and enhanced physical performance through reduced pain associated to overworked muscles, some scientists suggested.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, antive to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is process of repairing after damage of skin, tissues, organs, etc.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.

Arnica used in herbal medicine in reduced bruises, sprains, soreness, and swelling and for relief of arthritis, muscle, and joint pain.

According to some articles in herbal medicine, application of herbal Arnica showed a significant effect in improved muscle pain and stiffness through its soothing, moisturizing comfort and relief from these symptoms activity.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 53 subjects conducted by the Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, researchers suggested that the opposite results were found after each participant received 2 tubes of cream, 1 with active Arnica and 1 with placebo.

According to the study, application of creams applied to the lower legs immediately after the exercise, and again at 24 and 48 hours postexercise according to the "RIGHT" or "LEFT" labels, application arnica strong increaseed Pain scores  in compared to placebo, 24 hours after exercise but the injection pronounced no difference in day 3 and day 4 again in compared to placebo.

The results indicated that topical Arnica exerted a significant higher in pain score instead of relieved pain as expected by the study.

Dr. Adkison JD, the lead author, after taking into account of other confounder said, "Rather than decreasing leg pain, arnica was found to increase leg pain 24 hours after eccentric calf exercises. This effect did not extend to the 48-hour measurement".

The above differentiation were supported by the investigation of the homeopathic Arnica 30X can reduce muscle soreness following long-distance running more than a placebo conducted by the Research Council for Complementary Medicine.

According to Dr. Vickers AJ, the lead scientist, in the total of 519 runners anticipating delayed-onset muscles soreness after long-distance races in the observation of subjects by visual analog scale and Likert scale of muscle soreness every morning and evening for the 5 days following their race, application of homeopathic medicine (Arnica 30x) showed no different of pain scores in compared to placebo.

As the Mean of 2-day visual analog soreness scores for Arnica and placebo were 45.2 mm and 41.0 mm, respectively.

And the 95% confidence interval of the population mean was between 8.81 mm in favor of placebo and 0.51 mm in favor of Arnica.

However, in the investigation to determine the effect of topical Arnica in reducing pain, indicators of inflammation and muscle damage, and in turn improved performance in well-trained males experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in 20 well-trained males matched by maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2 Max) completed a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial, researchers found that topical Arnica reapplied every 4 waking hours showed a moderate in reduced pain and improved muscle tenderness three days post-eccentric exercise, but do not improved muscle damage and ameliorated inflammation through blood analysis.

Some researchers insisted that the conflict result of the studies may be attributed to the limitation of the small sample size, the geography, (including the climate and soil) of the herb was growth and when the herb was harvested,..... and suggested that a large sample size conduced by multi centers to viability the efficacy of herbal Arnica in either ways.

Alternative Therapy: Yoga, as An Effectively Complementary Practice in Alleviated Symptoms of Migraine

By Kyle J. Norton

Yoga intervention may be helpful in reduced symptoms of migraine, particularly in women, epidemiological studies suggested

Migraine headache is one most common headache defined as a condition of chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches, and nausea, usually developed gradually over 5–20 minutes and last for less than 60 minutes.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement and gesture..... has been best known for people in Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the study of migraine patients randomly given either conventional care (n = 30) or Yoga with conventional care (n = 30) and yoga practice session for 5 days a week for 6 weeks along with conventional care.
* Yoga group expressed a strong improvement in clinical variables in compared to control
* In yoga alone group, the improvement was found profoundly more effective in compared to both yoga + conventional care and conventional care groups.

Dr. the led authors said, "Headache frequency and intensity were reduced more in Yoga with conventional care than the conventional care group alone. Furthermore, Yoga therapy enhanced the vagal tone and decreased the sympathetic drive, hence improving the cardiac autonomic balance".

Truly, yoga slow breathing and meditation ameliorated stress cause of central nervous system in stimulated production of stress hormones in induction of hormone imbalance that trigger sensitive primary nerve in carried pain impulses from your mouth, teeth, head, face, ears, and neck and reduced production of nitric oxide synthases (iNOS) in facilitated muscle constriction in increased migraine pain, through decreased levels of nitric oxide (NO), a free radical in the regulation of cerebral and extra cerebral cranial blood flow.

The results suggested that yoga participated may also reduce risk of migraine caused by hormone interference medication such as hormonal contraceptives and hormone replacement treatment.

Furthermore, by calming the central nervous system yoga practice also reduced expression of stress hormones in orchestrated production prostaglandin hormone PE2 and decreased serotonin hormone, a type of neurotransmitter, in initiated muscle constriction and provoked migraine-like attacks.

Moreover, yoga mindfulness also reconnected and re balanced the mind and the body, by bring back the presence, while letting them go such as stress or dealing them in a profound and positive ways, thus reducing the implication of psychological syndrome, such as depression and anxiety in precipitated hormone imbalance and insulin fluctuation in facilitated  migraine, during menstrual cycle and menopausal women.

The above differentiation were supported by the randomized controlled trial of patients with migraine without aura assigned to yoga therapy or self-care group for 3 months, conducted by the University of Rajasthan.

According to study, yoga intervention group expressed less complaints related to headache intensity, frequency, pain rating index, affective pain rating index, total pain rating index, anxiety and depression scores and less used of symptomatic medication in compared to the self-care group, after adjusting to the baseline.

Importantly, the study demonstrated a significant reduction of symptoms of migraine headache in all aspects and frequency and associated clinical features. Dr. John PJ, the led author opinionated.

And, the study of  a total of 42 women patients with migraine enrolled and randomized into either a yoga exercise group placed in yoga training program in addition to the same medical treatment or a control group received only medication for 12 weeks, lead by the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.

The final results suggested that yoga intervention exerted a significant effect on endothelial function of migraineurs, through decreased plasma level of vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM), but expressed no significant difference in plasma levels of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM), in compared to control group.

Levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) were elevated in patients with migraine headache.

Taking together, there is no doubt that yoga may be considered as a complementary treatment of  symptoms of migraine.

Herbal Therapy: Arnica, a Potent Anti Edema and Bruising Herbal Medicine

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Arnica may have a therapeutic and substantial effect in reduced progression and treatment of edema, some scientists suggested.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, antive to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries in treatment of strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is process of repairing after damage of skin, tissues, organs, etc.

Edema is a condition, characterized by excessive accumulation of fluids in some tissues within the body.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivative.

In the study to compare the efficacy of herbal Arnica and corticosteroids in reduced postoperative edema and bruising associated with rhinoplasty of 48 primary rhinoplasty patients randomized assigned to three groups as follow
* Group P received 10 mg of dexamethasone (intravenously) intraoperatively followed by a 6-day oral tapering dose of methyl-prednisone
* Group A received Arnica three times a day for 4 days, and
* Group C received neither agent and served as the control.
With 3 blinded panelists rated the extent of ecchymosis, the intensity of the ecchymosis, and the severity of the edema

After observating the study over the entire period, scientists postulated that
* There were no significant differences in all groups on the day 2 of postoperative
* In compared to increased swelling of control group, both group A and P demonstrated a significant improvement in edema rating.

Interestingly, conventional medicine administration group exerted higher intensity of ecchymosis compared to groups A and C on the day of postoperative and all groups displayed no difference of magnitude of edema.

However, between period of day 2 and 8, groups A and C exhibited significantly more resolution of ecchymosis in compared to group P.

The results suggested that although herbal Arnica may have a therapeutic property in reducing edema during the early postoperative period, the herbal medicine did not provide similar benefits in regard to extent and intensity of ecchymosis in compared to corticosteroids.

In order to further confirmation of the effect of herbal Arnica in reduced postoperative ecchymosis and edema, researchers at the joint study lead University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, conducted an investigation in a select population of healthy volunteers after oculofacial surgery by examining the postoperative course and medical records of a total of 27 patients (16 females, 11 males) with age range was 18 to 70 years using topical Arnica and Ledum after undergoing common oculofacial procedures, including blepharoplasty, browpexy, and rhinoplasty, in the hands of 4 surgeons at tertiary referral centers from July 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012.

According to the result of experiment, application of Arnica 50 M (10) 50% and Ledum 50 M (10) pads bilaterally after surgery through postoperative day 6, showed a significantly accelerated healing from day 7 to day 12 in dose depending manner, without inflicting any adverse effects.

The findings suggested that application of composited Arnica and Ledum displays a potential efficacy in reducing postoperative ecchymosis and edema after oculofacial surgery.

The above differentiation of herbal Arnica in improved edema after surgery were supported by the joint study lead by the Research Center of University of adult male Wistar rats inoculated with 1% carrageenan into the footpad to induce emeda then treated with Arnica montana 6cH, dexamethasone (4.0 mg/kg; positive control) or 5% hydroalcoholic solution (negative control), per os, each 15 minutes, between 30 and 180 minutes after the irritant inoculation.

According to the investigation, application of Arnica group exhibited anti edema through increased lymphatic edema absorption, particularly, in late edema presented less intense edema treatment group after adjusting to the individually qualitative of inflammatory vascular events.

Moreover, the edema inhibition of Arnica was attributed to significant reduced mast cell degranulation and increased lymphatic vessels diameter and decreased production of prostaglandins associated to the development of edema, caused by subcutaneous carrageenan injection in induction of local inflammation.

Taken together, herbal Arnica may be considered as a functional food in reduced progression and  for treatment of edema and ecchymosis.

Herbal Therapy: Anise in Reduced Risk, Progression and Treatment of Gastric Ulcers

Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of gastric ulcers, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant ofthe species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, ....

Chemical comstituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the evaluate the claim of Unani and Arabian traditional medicine practitioners on the gastroprotective potential effect by using 80% ethanol, 0.2 mol/L NaOH, 25% NaCl and indomethacininduced gastric ulceration and secretion in rat model, researhcers found that application of doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Anise exert a significant protective activity against basal gastric acid secretion, acidity and completely inhibited the rumenal ulceration caused by necrotizing agents, by initiating production of depleted levels of gastric mucosal NP-SH and gastric wall mucus concentration.

Further analysis suggested that the anti gastric ulcers of Anise suspension was attributed the herbal medicine antioxidants in enhnaced production of hormone prostaglandins in inhibited levels of gastric secretion.

The hormone has been study intensively for protection and treatment of gastric ulcer by some scientists due to its effect in promoted rapid restitution of the superficial epithelium of the gastric mucosa and preservation of the deeper layers through the ability of the hormones in inhibited gastric secretion, stimulated bicarbonate secretion, and increased gastric blood volume.

According to Dr. Wilson DE, "Orally administered prostaglandin analogues have been helpful in some patients who failed to heal with standard ulcer treatment and in smokers, who usually do not heal as well as nonsmokers".

Some researchers suggested that the prostaglandin analogues may be an ideal solution of patient who are at high risk for gastric lesions due to chronic consumers of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs or alcohol.

Moreover, in the investigation of the effect of essential oil isolated from Croton zehntneri (EOCZ), a plant native to northeastern Brazil and anethole at doses of 30–300 mg/kg, researchers found that the composition demonstrated a strongly and linearly gastroprotective effect against ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric damage without changing to cold-restraint stress-induced ulcers in rats.

According to the measurement by Alcian blue binding assay, EOCZ and anethole (both at 30 and 300 mg/kg) similarly and significantly increased the mucus production by the gastric mucosa.

Additionally, the composition also consisted a significant effect on the volume of gastric juice, pH, or total acidity through its ability of EOCZ and anethole in enhanced production of gastric wall mucus.

The above of differentiation were supported by the study to test the major bioactive compound anethole effect in the ethanol-induced ulcer model in mice conducted by the joint investagation lead by Coordenação do Curso de Farmácia,

According to the results, after taking into account of other co founders, application of anethole (300 mg/kg) increased the level of gastric mucus, while derivatives (300 mg/kg) showed gastroprotective activity without affecting mucus secretion, through anethole antioxidant and anti inflammation activities.

By examining the antioxidant aspects in the experiment mice, researchers surprisingly found that anethole exhibited protective gastric effect through reduced oxidative stress caused by induced suspension in activated the gastric mucosal nitric oxide (NO) in maintaining gastric mucosal integrity, and improving production of the natural antioxidants in the host body, including glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxide (MDA, measured as malondialdehyde) glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase.

Importantly, anethole also reduced oxidative stress in initiated levels of proinflammatory substances of plasma tumor necrosis factor-α with function involved in systemic inflammation in the acute phase reaction and interleukin-1β and IL-6 in regulated immune response in protect the host against bacterial and viral in induction of infection.

Taken together, herbal Anise and its majors chemical constituent anethole may be considered as a secondary therapy accompanied with conventional medicine for treatment of gastric ulcer. However, intake of Anise supplement should be taken extreme care in prevention of acute liver toxicity.
