#FermentedCucumbers Exhibit Probiotic Properties in the Improvement of the Digestive Health, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration with no side effects, according to studies.
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that play an essential role in the improvement of digestive functioning.

In other words, probiotics balanced the ratio of the gut microbiota by improving the levels of healthy organisms in the gut, particularly in people who are taking antibiotics, leading to the optimization of the digestive system in the absorption of nutrients for the body's needs such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function.

Where gut microbiota is the complex community of microorganisms that live in our gastrointestinal tracts.

Microbial imbalance or dysbiosis-induced intestinal inflammation as a result of overexpression of bad organisms in the gut has been found to utilize a complex arsenal of virulence factors to colonize and persist in the intestine, implicating the development of intestinal diseases.

Some virulence factors such as the genotoxin colibactin, produced by overexpression of bad bacteria in the gut were found to promote colorectal cancer and chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang, the lead scientist in the examined the importance of gut bacteria on Human Health wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells".
And, " they (imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota) can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find potential and natural compounds for the improvement of digestive health, researchers investigation the probiotic activity of cucumber.

According to the novel strain of lactic acid bacterium isolated from fermented cucumber, fermented carbohydrates such as sucrose, dextrose, and arabinose showed a significant gastroprotective effect against antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, kanamycin, and vancomycin.

Furthermore, the isolate displayed potential probiotic properties in the improvement of the digestive health observed by hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, coaggregation, and in vitro cell adhesion ability.

Moreover, the isolate also exhibited resistance against bad bacteria and simulated gastric juice at pH 3.0.

Based on the findings researchers suggested that a novel strain of lactic acid bacterium isolated from fermented cucumber protected the digestive tract against the injection of antibiotics, inhibited the production of bad bacteria such as gram-positive bacterial and utilized the effects of prebiotics such as inulin and raffinose.

Dr. Shukla R, the lead scientist said, " These results indicate both probiotic property and the glucan-sucrase-producing ability of P. pentosaceus CRAG3".

In vitro, in the evaluation of the probiotic potentials of three Bacillus strains 437F, 1630F, and 1020G obtained from the traditional pickle researchers found that

* All strains only showed high acid, and bile tolerance but also exhibited antagonistic activity against various pathogens.

* All strains exhibited antioxidant activity, auto- and co-aggregation ability and surface hydrophobicity and attachment capacity against the Caco-2 cells were similar to those of well-known probiotic strains.

* All strains are safe without causing harm to healthy colon cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "With respect to their characteristics and safety aspect, these Bacillus species may have the potential to consider as probiotics for animal and/or human applications".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be considered supplements for the protection of digestive functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
