A cardiovascular disease is a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels abnormality.
The 3 most common forms of cardiovascular disease in North America are coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and carotid artery disease caused by plaques build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply blood to the heart, the arms and legs, and the brain, respectively.
What causes plaques building up in the wall of the arteries is debatable.
Researchers do not why people who have the same health conditions, family history, and diet pattern, are susceptible to the early onset of cardiovascular disease while others do not.
According to the John Hopkins statistics, approximately 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing about 2,200 deaths a day, averaging one death every 40 seconds.
Sadly to now that almost one out of every three deaths results from cardiovascular disease.
Epidemiologically, certain risk factors are found to associate with the onset of the condition, including lack of exercise, diabetes, use of tobacco, gender, genetic preposition, and excessive alcohol drinking.
One of the most common and preventable risk factors has been under intensified debate in the scientific community. If a poor diet pattern and lifestyle can facilitate the onset of the disease, then a healthy diet choice and lifestyle with moderate exercise should provide a strong effect in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
In other words, by replacing the Western diet characterized by higher loads of processed meats, salty snacks, sweets, and soft drinks and a dietary risk factor for CVD with the traditional diet characterized by high in fruits and vegetables and less in red meat and processed foods, cardiovascular disease is preventable.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading disease to cause of death of 840,768 deaths (635,260 cardiac) in 2016 in the United States.
From 2006 to 2016, the US death rate from CVD decreased by 18.6% and from coronary heart disease by 31.8%.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.
In finding a potential remedy for reducing the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases, researchers compared cruciferous vegetables, noncruciferous vegetables, total vegetables, and total fruit intake with risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality.
The study included a total of 134,796 Chinese adults who participated in 2 population-based, prospective cohort studies in the Shanghai Women's Health Study and the Shanghai Men's Health Study.
According to the validated food-frequency questionnaires, returned from the participants,
* Over the time of the study, 3442 deaths among women during a mean follow-up of 10.2 y and 1951 deaths among men during a mean follow-up of 4.6 y.
*Although fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with risk of total mortality in both women and men, and a dose-response pattern, cruciferous vegetable intake showed the most strong protective effects against mortality.
* The inverse associations of all fruits and vegetables intake primarily related only to cardiovascular disease mortality but not to cancer mortality.
Based on the results, researchers said, "Our findings support recommendations to increase consumption of vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables, and fruit to promote cardiovascular health and overall longevity".
Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of total and cardiovascular disease mortality, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
