#Broccoli or #BroccoliSprouts' Sulforaphane Inhibits Oxidativestress but Not Affecting Thyroid Hormones or Thyroid Autoimmune Disease

Kyle J. Norton

Thyroid disease is a medical condition that causes a malfunction of the thyroid.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much thyroid hormones.

The most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism are excessive sweating, heat intolerance, increased bowel movements, shaking, nervousness, agitation, anxiety, rapid heart rate, palpitations, irregular heart rate, weight loss, fatigue, weakness...

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive and produces very little thyroid hormones.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are depended on the severe stage of the disease. As it progresses slowly over the years such as weight gain and fatigue, vitiligo and alopecia areata, chronic constipation, urticaria and puffiness of hands and feet, yellow ivory skin, coarse rough dry skin, alopecia periorbital edema, amenorrhea, dyspareunia, PCO, PMS and breast tenderness, menstrual irregularities and infertility,...

Thyroid toxicity that affects the function of the thyroid gland not only causes thyroid dysfunction but also induces thyroid autoimmune disease.

According to Dr. Catherine Sutcliffe, the lead scientist in the study of "Endocrine Disruption of Thyroid Function" wrote, "The common factor in the direct thyroid toxicity mechanisms so far outlined is the reduction of thyroid hormone production and secretion. The reduction of thyroid hormones (T4 or T3) results in compensatory increased secretion of TSH due to the concomitant diminution of feedback control (see Figure 11.3)".

And, "It is important to note that increased TSH stimulation of the thyroid produces the same histopathological effects irrespective of the mechanism by which TSH is increased including thyroid growth evidenced by increased size and weight".

There are a number of causes of thyroid toxicity including short and long-term intake of some medications (sunitinib has been found to cause thrombocytopenia and hypoglycemia in 62 patients) and xenobiotics.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The vegetable has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

In finding thyroidal toxicity.of sulforaphane, a redox-active natural product present in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. For broccoli sprouts, researchers examined the effect of the phytochemical sulforaphane effect on Nrf2 (NFE2-related factor 2) that leads to thyroid dysfunction or thyroid autoimmune disease.

According to the results of the biochemical measures of thyroid function and thyroid autoimmunity in 45 female participants in a randomized clinical trial at baseline and after 84 days of beverage administration, researchers found that

* Broccoli sprout-derived products show promising activity for the prevention of oxidative stress-related diseases.

* Sulforaphane did not affect the serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone, free thyroxine, and thyroglobulin.

* More importantly, sulforaphane does not affect thyroid autoimmunity status.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results provide evidence in favor of the safety of chemoprevention strategies that target the activation of Nrf2 to protect against environmental exposures and other oxidative stress-related pathologies".

Taken altogether, Broccoli sprouts may be safe for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases without causing thyroidal toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
