#Beta-Sitosterol Exerts a Significant Eddect on #SkinCancer, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Skin, a large organ that forms the out layers of our body has a serval layer of ectodermal tissue to protect the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments, and internal organs against foreign pathogenic invasion.

Skin cancer is a medical condition of uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells and is often detected at an early stage.

Most cases of primary skin cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner ling of the skin. At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organ through blood and fluid circulation.

There are 3 main types of cells in the top layer of the skin (called the epidermis):
Squamous cells, Basal cells, and Melanocytes.

Long-term cumulative sun exposure is one of the major causes of basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the leading cause of melanoma.

Certain risk factors that make some people more susceptible to the development of skin cancer than others include the increase in age, weakened immune system, gender, skin tone, genetic preposition, and family history.

According to the statistics, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

Every day, approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer due to a misunderstanding of the health benefits and risks of sun and tanning exposure.

The most common symptoms at the early stage, are a large brownish spot with darker speckles, a mole that changes in color, size, or feel or that bleeds, a small lesion with an irregular border, and portions that appear red, pink, white, blue or blue-black.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers compared the effects of Betulinic acid (1), betulinic acid-3-acetate (2), 3-acetyl betulin aldehyde (3), oleanolic acid-3-acetate (4), 3-β-hydroxy-28,19-β-olenolide (5), and β-sitosterol (6) were isolated from Platanus orientalis on skin cancer cells.

According to the chemical analysis, (1 ) is the most abundant component (4.63%) compared to the least (5) (0.017%) the least.

All isolated compounds showed a significant cytotoxic effect against human keratinocyte, mouse melanoma, and human skin epithelial carcinoma cancer cells according to the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.

In other words, all compounds found in Platanus orientalis work synergistically against the skin cancer risk in vivo.

Taken together, beta-sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of od skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
