#Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits Intestinal Cancer Cells in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the intestines.

Most cases of intestinal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the internal tissue. At the advanced stage, after penetrating deep layers of the intestines, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the intestine to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Certain factors such as being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, and certain types of diet. smoking excessive alcohol drinking, family and personal history, and the increase in age are associated with an increased risk of intestinal cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of intestinal cancer in the Western world may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat Western diet over the past many decades.

Dr. Manon D. Schulz, the lead scientist in the investigation of the effects of high-fat diet-mediated dysbiosis that promotes intestinal carcinogenesis suggested, "Several aspects common to a Western lifestyle, including obesity and decreased physical activity, are known risks for gastrointestinal cancers. There is substantial evidence suggesting that diet profoundly affects the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, there is now unequivocal evidence linking dysbiosis to cancer development".

And, "Undoubtedly various factors contribute to the etiology of intestinal cancer, but there are compelling arguments to include high-fat diet (HFD) and composition of the gut microbiota as key risk factors".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of intestinal cancer can be decreased by changing the diet pattern from the Western diet to a traditional diet with higher fruits and vegetables with a lower intake of red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis examined the
intestinal carcinogenesis--relationship with tissue anthocyanin levels in an animal model.

Selected Apc(Min) mice ingested C3G or Mirtoselect at 0.03, 0.1, or 0.3% in the diet for 12 weeks, and intestinal adenomas were examined.

Where Mirtoselect, is an anthocyanin mixture from bilberry, and isolated cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is the most abundant anthocyanin in the diet.

C3G and Mirtoselect at the highest doses decreased the adenoma numbers by 45% (p < 0.001) or 30% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to controls.

According to the intestinal mucosa and urinary assays, anthocyanins were found at the analytical detection limit in the plasma and at quantifiable levels.

More precisely, the total anthocyanin levels in mice on C3G or Mirtoselect were 43 ng and 8.1 microg/g tissue, respectively, in the intestinal mucosa, and 7.2 and 12.3 microg/ml in the urine.
These results suggested that C3G and Mirtoselect in the Apc(Min) mouse processed a chemotherapeutic effect for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about berries' anti-intestinal tumorigenesis, researchers examined the different phenolic profiles of intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia/+ mice.

Mice selected for the study were fed a high-fat AIN93-G diet (Con) or AIN93-G diet containing 10% (w:w) freeze-dried bilberry, lingonberry (LB), or cloudberry (CB) for 10 wk.

All 3 berries significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal adenomas as indicated by a 15-30% reduction in tumor numbers.

According to Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, all 3 berries inhibited the levels of decreased levels of proteins associated with cell cycle division.

Additionally, all 3 berries exerted early protection of the cells in the intestine against the alternation of cell DNA to facilitate the onset of the disease.

The findings strongly suggested the use of berries as chemopreventive components for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of
intestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter study.

#Healthyfood #GreenBeans Protect the Liver Against Liver Oxidative Stress Markers

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given its nature, free radicals readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms with a function to inhibit oxidation, come either from dietary sources or are produced by the body.

In contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in a moderated amount for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.

In a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cell's lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Ozone, certain pesticides, cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.

Liver stress markers such as serum MDA refer to oxidative stress in the liver tissues caused by the overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver.

Dr. Halina Cichoż-Lach, the lead scientist said, "Redox state constitutes an important background of numerous liver disorders. The redox state participates in the course of inflammatory, metabolic and proliferative liver diseases.".

And, "Hepatocytic proteins, lipids, and DNA are among the cellular structures that are primarily affected by ROS and reactive nitrogen species. The process results in structural and functional abnormalities in the liver".

In other words, liver oxidative stress over the long-term induced damage of proteins, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA can lead to liver diseases, including cancer.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belonging to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention of liver stress, researchers examined the effect of cabbage, green beans, or seeds from sunflowers grown either on municipal sewage sludge-amended soil or soil alone fed to male and female Coturnix quail, as 50% of a complete diet, for 5 weeks.

Green beans fed male and female Coturnix quail exhibited liver GST activities significantly lower compared to those fed with sludge-grown cabbage.

Compared to the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) soil-grown cabbage demonstrated a two-fold activity increase in birds fed the other plants.

More precisely, the levels of glucosinolates present in the cabbage, are 3040 and 9253 ppm (dry basis) in the sludge-grown and soil-grown cabbage, respectively.

In other words, green beans showed a significant reduction of liver stress markers lesser than those of cabbage, regardless of soil cultivation.

Taken altogether, green beans may be considered a liver-protective veggie, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Asparagus Enhances the Male Reproductive Health

Kyle J. Norton

Whole food(herbal medicine) used as medical treatment, linking health benefits in the prevention, management, and treatment of diseases has induced much interest in today's renowned scientists.
But many researchers have raised questions about herbal quality, because geographic differences, time of growth and harvest, etc. may affect their's potency. I do believe, these questions can only be answered by experience herbalists.

Asparagus may have a strong effect on male sexual behaviors due to the enhancement of anabolic metabolism, and reproductive and sexual behavioral activities.

In a Rats study divided into five groups: Group I (control), Groups II-IV (AARR treated, 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg body weight, respectively, orally for 30 d), and Group V (standard control treated with sildenafil citrate, 5 mg/kg body weight), treatment of asparagus adscendens root (AARR) extract
the group showed a significant increase in weight, testicular tubular diameter, the number of sperm counts, and sexual behavioral parameters, including penile erections in comparison to other groups.

Dr. Bansode FW, the lead author said, "These results indicate increased anabolic, reproductive, and sexual activities by AARR treatment. Thus, the data provide a scientific rationale for its traditional use as an aphrodisiac (in stimulates sexual desire) or for sexual disorders".

Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia, used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In vitro, Lyophilised aqueous extracts of Asparagus racemosus Willd. (AR) exerted a significant effect on sperm counts, seminal fructose content, and penile erection in improving male reproductive function.

Researchers also suggested that There is a directly correlated between an erectile function with the penile effect of extracts on induced NO release.

Taking together, Asparagus may be the next potential whole food medicine for the treatment of male sexual malfunction, including sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, infertility, etc., but further studies may be necessary.to confirm this potency.

#Healthyfood #Kidneybeans Reduce the Risk and Treatment of Diabetes

Kyle J. Norton

In herbal medicine, symptoms of the diseases can only be eased gradually, depending on the stage of the treatment which directly addresses the cause of the disease.

Intake of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), including kidney beans, may reduce risk, risk of complications, and treatment of diabetes, a recent study suggested.

Diabetes is a medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose, as the result of cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Kidney beans with kidney shape, strong flavor, and color of reddish brown in nature are often an excellent dietary selection with no cholesterol, but a good source of protein and minerals.

According to the Research and Graduate Studies in Food Science, School of Chemistry, although cooking induced a significant decrease of total phenolic, tannins, and anthocyanins content, the group fed with common bean not only showed protection of pancreatic ß-cells but also displayed a significant reduction of blood glucose (22.8 %), triglycerides (21.9 %), total cholesterol (29.9 %) and LDL (56.1 %).

Dr. Hernández-Saavedra D, the lead author said, "The preventive-treatment group did not inhibit the increase of TNF-α(In relation to inflammation) and IL-1β(the inflammatory cytokines) whereas the treatment group did, compared to the diabetic control".

Another study in the support of bean species such as pinto, black, navy, or kidney in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, suggested that intake of beans showed potential health effects in reduced glycaemic stress in expression of hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, the early stage of diabetes.

A total of 17 men and women with type 2 diabetes controlled by metformin (n = 14) or diet/exercise (n = 3) aged 35-70 years participated in the randomized 4 × 4 crossover trial, in the testing of the effect of white long grain rice control, pinto beans/rice, black beans/rice, red kidney beans/rice test meals, matched for 50 grams of available carbohydrate, after a 12-hour fasting, group treated with dark red kidney showed an attenuated glycemic response compared to rice alone.

Taking together, the consumption of kidney beans as traditional foods may provide non-pharmaceutical management and treatment of type 2 diabetes and improve dietary adherence with cultural groups.

The Effects of Coffee on Gastritis?

By Kyle J. Norton

Epidemiological studies, linking coffee consumption daily and regularly associated with risk of gastritis developing caused by the overproduction of bacterial Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in induced infection, have been inclusive.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Gastritis is a condition of inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the stomach lining caused by bacterial Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) overexpression located at the lining of the stomach.

In a study of a total of 447 patients aged 15-79 had not had peptic ulcer disease or treatment for H pylori infection. researchers found that coffee consumption showed a positive dose-response relation in the reduced active stomach lining infection and after adjusted odds ratios, patients who drank < 3 cups and > or = 3 cups of coffee per day displayed the relative risk ratio of 1.49 and 2.49 respectively, in compared to non-drinkers.

The result suggested that coffee intake showed negative effects in attenuated in the course of H pylori-induced active infection. In other words, coffee intake may elevate active infection caused by bacterial H pylori.

Another, in the study of a sample of 238 subjects (hospital employees) initially (in 1994) seronegative to H. pylori tested again 5 years later (1999), in two different periods (1994 and 1999). returned questionnaire from patients showed a neutral effect between coffee consumption and risk of infection caused by H. pylori regardless of the number of cups intake daily and after taking into account of other factors.

More importantly, in the investigation of the effect of coffee consumption on four major acid-related diseases: gastric ulcer (GU), a serve case of gastric infection, duodenal ulcer (DU), reflux esophagitis (RE), and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) based on the large-scale multivariate analysis of the 9,517 healthy adults, researchers filed the following results in related to coffee intake and risk of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection
1. Coffee consumption expressed a relatively low ratio of pepsinogen I/II
2. Coffee intake expressed a positively related risk of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection by multiple logistic regression analysis,
3. Coffee intake was not associated with either GU or DU

But after taking into account other risk factors, researchers exemplified that " there is no significant relationship between coffee consumption and the four major acid-related upper gastrointestinal disorders".

With all the information collected, coffee intake may have a very significant and neutral link to an increased risk of Gastritis caused by bacterial infection, therefore, clarification by large sample size and cohost studies are necessary,

Yoga Practice Inhibits the Onset of Anxiety Naturally

Kyle J. Norton

People who participated in yoga classes are likely to experience less or lower levels of anxiety and in some cases, may have the best chance of letting go of anxiety through the reduction of stress implications, some studies suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

Anxiety is a mental disorder characterized by worry about future events and fear of current events.

People experience anxiety differently. Some people feel a sudden moment of anxiety just a bad feeling, it comes and goes, only lasting a short time. Depending on how people cope with moments of anxiety, the events can be brief or last a few days.

However, in some persons, if anxiety does not go away, they may require treatment from related field specialists.

If you frequently experience symptoms of nervousness, restlessness, or being tense feelings of danger, panic, or dread rapid heart rate rapid breathing, or hyperventilation,..... you may have developed an anxiety disorder.

In the evaluate the yoga effect in reduced levels of anxiety, Dr. Bernardi ML and colleagues launched an investigation of 45 mastectomized women treated at the Ilza Bianco outpatient service of Santa Rita de Cássia Hospital in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo from March to November 2010.

Selected women were assigned to 6 yoga-applied sessions.

At the end of the experiment periods, a researcher found that the yoga treatment group shows a statistically significant in decreased anxiety levels measured by Anxiety Trait and State Test.

Anxiety Trait and State Test is a psychological inventory of 40 self-report items used for testing of anxiety effect with an aim to measure anxiety at both poles of the normal affect curve known as state vs. trait.

Further analysis also suggested that the reduced level of anxiety in participants was attributed to decreasing physiological and psychological arousal such as the heart rate, blood pressure, relaxation and calmness, and easing respiration.

Moreover, women in the yoga group at the end of the lessons were also found less stressed compared to the beginning of the class.

In other words, yoga participants have successfully learned how to manage stress, thus reducing the risk of anxiety in response to mental or emotional strain.

Truly, regular yoga exercise including breathing technique, and meditation not only provides participants a positive mind in a maintained state of calmness and relaxation in dealing with such events without getting restless and confused but also enhances recovery from anxiety.

Some yoga instructors suggested that technique of yoga practice including mindfulness also reduces the production of the stress hormone cortisol and brought back the present moment while letting them go or dealing with them in a profound way.

Indeed, yoga postures and deep breathing have been shown to ameliorate the overexpression of nerve neurons in transmitted information of sensation, stress, and suffering, thus reducing the risk of anxiety.

Dr. Bernardi ML, the lead author of the study said, "hatha yoga exercises decrease stress and anxiety in the experimental group. No connection between confounding variables and anxiety and stress levels was found".

Hatha yoga is one form of yoga practice containing physical exercises and breathing control.

More importantly, according to the data collection period and meditation program between January 9 and August 31, 2009, 46 women who were pregnant following IVF, and were between 12-20 weeks gestation, participated in the study (23 experimental groups, 23 control group), women pregnant after IVF participated in yoga class showed statistically significant improvements in stress, anxiety, labor pain, and labor confidence.

In fact, yoga in improvements of stress, anxiety, labor pain, and labor confidence, decreasing physiological and psychological arousal also enhanced women's sense of control and confidence in giving birth as well as staying away from negative thinking about the pregnancy outcome.

IVF is a medical procedure characterized by eggs fertilized outside the mother's womb.

Interestingly, a total of 46 participants completed both a resistance exercise class and a yoga class in a counterbalanced order, researchers suggested that in comparison to the measurement of body satisfaction and social physique anxiety completed immediately before and after each class, the yoga participated group displays greater improvements of body image and reduces the state of social physique anxiety.

In other words, by focusing on breathing, the connection of the mind and body, yoga participants were found to associate decreased state social physique anxiety with an increase in body satisfaction.

According to the differentiation of the Journal of Clinical Research & Bioethics a group of patients suffering from chronic diseases participated in yoga class, yoga attendees benefited from the stimulation of immune functions in reduced physical symptoms by improving the expression of human β-defensin 2 (HBD-2), a potent antimicrobial peptide forms part of the innate immune response, .natural killer (NK) cells, and anti-inflammatory cytokines, decreasing stress and/or anxiety symptoms and improving quality of life.

Taking together, yoga may be the best treatment for people with anxiety through the improvement of social, mental, and body confidence in a reduced state of over worries, particularly in people with frequent stress. People who continued yoga practice daily may have the best chance of letting go of anxiety forever.

Fennel May Be Better Than Ibuprofen in Stopping the Primary Painful Period

Kyle J. Norton

Adding a portion of fennel to the daily diet may have a potential and positive effect in reduced pain caused by sensory neuron stimulus in women with primary dysmenorrhea, some scientists suggested.

The results of the investigation were carried out by a number of respectable institutes, including the Babol University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, and details of the experiment were published in an online medical library.

Antinociceptive activity is an action or process of blocking the painful injurious stimulus by sensory neurons.

Dysmenorrhea is also known as a painful period, a menstrual cramp in the regions of the pelvis or lower abdomen that last a few days during menstruation, caused by the overproduction of certain hormones in the family of prostaglandins.
Some women may experience periodic pains during or prior to, or after menstrual periods in the lower abdomen. In some cases, the pain can also spread over to the whole abdomen and lumbosacral region.

There are 2 Types of dysmenorrhea
* Primary dysmenorrhea
Primary dysmenorrhea affects about 90% of girls in the first 2 years of menstruation. Some researchers suggested that it may be caused by the immaturity of the reproductive organs.

* Secondary dysmenorrhea
Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by gynecological diseases. including hormone imbalance, endometriosis, fibromas, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.

Accompanied by the painful period, women may also experience to psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, irritability, digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and physical symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and painful breasts.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In order to compare the effect of a combination of fennel extract/vitamin E with ibuprofen on the intensity of pain in primary dysmenorrhea among the students of Tabriz city in 2007-2009, researchers of the joint study led by the Kosar Department of Shahid Motahhary Hospital carried out an investigation of 68 students from Medical and Tabriz universities, who were living in the dormitory, suffering from primary dysmenorrhea.

All participants were randomly divided into two groups of 34 students each (the two groups used combination of fennel extract/vitamin E and ibuprofen cross-over form in the 2 months).

Application of the combination displayed a mean of peak pain intensity in the first, second, third, sixth, and forty-eighth hours that is significantly lower than the ibuprofen group.

Also, a combination of fennel extract/vitamin E was more effective than ibuprofen in the first hour (P < 0.03) and second hour (P < 0.04), according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) tool for ranking the intensity of the pain.

These results suggested that the fennel and vitamin E combination was more efficacy in blocking the neuron in transmitting pain caused by overexpression of prostaglandins hormone in the induction of abdominal muscle constriction compared to conventional medicine ibuprofen.

Dr. Nasehi M, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Combination of fennel extract/vitamin E is effective on decreasing the intensity of pain of primary dysmenorrhea, and it is advised to those who cannot use chemical drugs".

In a separate study to investigate the effect of fennel used alone on primary dysmenorrhea symptoms and amenorrhea duration, 80 female students who satisfied the criteria and guidelines were randomly divided into two groups of intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40).

The intervention group was given one soft capsule of Fennel (30 mg) every 4 hours, 3 days before menstruation till the 5th day, and continued for 3 months. The control group received no medication.

According to the result of the experiments, fennel treated group exerted a significant decrease in the mean nausea intensity and weakness from 1.93, and 2.88 after 3 months, compared to the control group 2.37, to 6.65 in the control group.

Furthermore, in comparison to the control group, the fennel group reduced the duration of the menstrual period after two and three months of use.

Moreover, Fennel treated group demonstrated a strong improvement in quality and feelings of well-being after 1 and 3 months.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea without inducing adverse effects.
