Cabbage Protects the Neuron Integrity Against Neurodegenerative Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection an action involved the use of a natural substance to protect the integrity of neurons against damage or death.

In other words, neuroprotection is the process to protect brain functioning.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

The most common diseases associated with neurodegenerative diseases are dementia, a cluster of conditions included Alzheimer’s disease, leading to a negative influence on the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

Dementia is a neuropsychiatric disorder as a result of cognitive impairment and behavioral disturbances. The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common, contributing to caregiver burden and premature institutionalization.

The true symptoms of dementia are a progressive loss of memory and other mental abilities that can cause impairment of a person's ability to perform usual tasks in everyday life.

According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the treatment of age-related diseases, researchers examined the effect of cabbage consumption in the risks of neurodegenerative disease.

According to the tested differentiation,  isothiocyanates (ITCs), the sulfur- and nitrogen-containing phytochemicals found in cabbage reduced the risk for developing neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) and some other chronic disorders including but not limited to cardiovascular diseases, various forms of cancer and inflammatory disorders among others.

Furthermore, Sulforaphane(SFN), derived from glucoraphanin EXERTED its ability not only arrest many target proteins but also to control various metabolic pathways in neuronal cells by targeting amyloid β (Aβ)-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis in a human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y).

Moreover, SFN inhibited the progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD) through the interception of pro-inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in vivo, induced by intrastriatal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) for 28 days.

Additionally, in the examing the chemical compound moringin (MG) isolated from the leaf extracts of cabbage, researchers found that the administration in different doses improved spatial memory and reduced neuronal degeneration to the minimum level in the hippocampal region of the animal disease model.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "This review summarizes the most significant and up-to-date in vitro and in vivo neuroprotective actions of sulforaphane (SFN), moringin (MG), .... in neurodegenerative diseases".

Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids Might Block the Onset of Breast Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The woman breast is made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a woman's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Cancer is a class of chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth associated with the alternation of cell DNA.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

In the early stage, most patients with breast cancer may experience lumps on the breast or surrounding the breast.

However, breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the breast, the breast cancer cells may travel a distance far the way to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

According to the statistics, the lifetime risk of invasive breast cancer developing is 12%.

In 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

Just about 20% of breast cancers are diagnosed in women under 50, while almost 30% are diagnosed in women over 70 years of age.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed at the early stage is closed to 100%.

Epidemiologically, there are several factors that can reduce the risk of breast cancer including breastfeeding, early age at first full-term pregnancy, an increasing number of births, preeclampsia, longer duration of breastfeeding.

The stages of breast cancer can be classified depending on
* The size of the cancer
* Invasive or not
* Whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes
* Whether cancer has spread to the distance parts or organs of the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of malignant tumors, researchers compared the effect of DHA, Delta-T3, and DHA plus Delta-T3 co-treatment on triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231.

Based on the results of cells treated by 50 μM DHA and/or 5 μM Delta-T3,
* DHA can trigger an increase in lipid droplet (LD) biogenesis and co-treatment with Delta-T3 was able to reduce this LD biogenesis.

Please note that a higher cytoplasmic LD content is associated with a higher breast cancer cell malignancy and proliferation.

* The inhibition of the cytoplasmic LD content by silencing ADRP (adipose differentiation-related protein), also decreased cell proliferation in MDA-MB-231 cells.

* Treatment with DHA and Delta-T3 alone or co-treatment did not reduce cell viability

* More importantly, DHA can trigger lipophagy associated with the autophagic degradation of lipid droplets in MDA-MB-231 cells compared to DHA plus Delta-T3 co-treatment that was able to enhance this lipophagy process.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " co-treatment with DHA plus Delta-T3 in MDA-MB-231 cells could reduce LD biogenesis and potentiate lipophagy in these cells, possibly having a positive impact to inhibit breast cancer malignancy".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with Delta-T3 vitamin E isoform may be considered a supplementation for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Inhibits the Onset of Osteonecrosis in Femoral Head (ONFH)

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteonecrosis is a medical condition associated with the death of bone cells caused by the reduced blood flow.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is the endpoint of a variety of disease processes that decreased blood flow within the femoral head.

Patients with osteonecrosis at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, as the disease gets worse, progressive osteonecrosis can induce symptoms of pain.

Patients with long-term use of high-dose steroid medications and excessive alcohol intake are at the increased risk of the disease developing.

From the age perspective, people between the age of 30 to 50 are also at a higher risk of the disease.

Other risk factors associated with the disease prevalence are Injuries, that damage to nearby blood vessels and reduce blood flow to bones.

Diseases associated with the osteonecrosis are
* Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is a condition of inflammation of the pancreas that affects the function of the pancreas in secreting digestive juices, or enzymes. Pancreatitis can be acute or chronic.

* Diabetes
Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

* Systemic lupus erythematosus
The systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease as a result of the development of autoantibodies that attack the systems and organs in the body.
* Sickle cell anemia

* Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.

The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a potential herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of bone disease, researchers examined the herbal formula Huo Xue Tong Luo capsule (HXTL capsule) containing Peach kernel, Safflower Carthamus, Angelica Sinensis, Ligusticum wallichii etc, effects on osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH).

According to the results from the experiment,
* HXTL capsule promoted osteogenesis in rat MSCs.

* HXTL capsule silences the endogenous lncRNA-Miat involved in vascular dysfunction to promote osteogenesis of rMSCs.

* Additionally, HXTL capsule significantly increased the occupancy of H3K27me3 and decreased H3K4me3 in promoter regions of Miat to improve blood circulation.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "HXTL capsule can promote osteogenesis to ameliorate ONFH through inhibiting the transcriptional expression of Miat, at least partially".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used in a combination with other herbal medicine may be considered remedies for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH)., pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Promotes the Healthy Ratio of Gastrointestinal Microbiota

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal health is a subject that covers multiple positive aspects of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the effective digestion and absorption of food, promoting the balance of intestinal microbiota.

According to general knowledge, people who eat a diet with fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber including beans and legumes and berries, have been found to process a healthy microbiota.

Believe it or not, the human gut microbiota contains trillions of cells, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The gut microbiota is important to improve the digestive function in the absorption of nutrition, before passing them to the cells and tissues in the body.

Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.

Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic, enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.

In the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.

However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy weight individuals.

In the immunity, the gut microbiota and immune system interact to protect each other to ensure the optimal function of both the digestive and immune system.

In other words, imbalanced gut microbiota not only causes the dysfunction of the digestive system but also reduces the functional immune system in the protection of the body against infection.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongs to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that improves the gut functioning, researchers examined the effects of broccoli's glucosinolate hydrolysis activity on microbiota in the male C57BL/6 mice gut.

Glucosinolate hydrolysis activity is the process that can lead to a range of breakdown products, associated with the improvement of gut microbiota function.

Chronic raw or hydrolyzed broccoli fed mice not only increased the myrosinase-like activities of the colon and cecum contents, and also improved the NQO1 activity in the protection of protection against semiquinones and oxidative stress of the colon mucosa, compared to control mice.

In other words, broccoli ingestion showed a strong and positive effect on the composition of the gut bacteria community.

However, sinigrin, another type of glucosinolate isolated from broccoli does not demonstrate any effect on the gut composition.

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the promotion of gut health, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Protects the Skin Against UVB-Induced Skin Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin is the largest organ in the body with function to protect the internal organs and tissue against foreign organisms infection, leading organs and tissue injury and damage.

It also is the third organ behind the liver and kidney to eliminate body toxins if the first 2 fails to cleanse them all.

Skin diseases are conditions of skin damage and classified according to each pathogenic cause.

Most cases of skin disease are involved in allergens, irritants. However certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel disease, autoimmune diseases, and genetic preposition can also cause r skin diseases.

Recent studies suggested that a poor diet is also associated with the onset of skin diseases such as dermatological disease which may be linked to systemic disease, and dietary changes which may affect health outcomes, as in psoriasis.

Photodamage is a type of skin damage caused by long-term exposure to the sunlight or tanning bed.

Photodamage skin is one most common form of skin damage in the US, due to misunderstanding the benefits and adverse effects on light exposure.

Believe it or not, a quarter of lifetime sun exposure occurs before the end of the teenage years. Most cases of photo skin damage can also stimulate some unwanted skin conditions, including advanced aging or wrinkling, uneven skin, hyperpigmentation, telangiectasias, actinic keratoses liver, and age spots.

In severe cases, long-term photodamage skin can also lead to skin cancer. More people in the US are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other cancers combined.
According to the statistic, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

Conventionally, most cases of early-stage and mild damage of skin are treated by topical Levulan that remove scaly patches of actinic keratoses from your skin.

UVB-induced skin damage is a condition of skin damage caused by overexposure to UVB.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers examined the protective capacity of alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene during UVA and UVB irradiation of human melanocytes in vitro.

According to the primary cultures of normal human melanocytes irradiated by different wavelengths within the UV spectrum (UVA 6 J cm(-2), UVB 60 mJ cm(-2)),
* UVA and UVB irradiation decreased the intracellular concentration of reduced glutathione associated with an antioxidant enzyme produced by the host and activated the transcription factor nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB, involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, UVA and UVB irradiation increased the level of the p65 subunit in the activation of the potential of NF-kappa Band translocation to the nucleus.

Moreover, UVA and UVB caused apoptotic cell death as detected by nuclear fragmentation and caspase activation 24 h postirradiation.

Pretreatment with alpha-tocopherol prevented UVA- and UVB-induced glutathione loss, NF-kappaB translocation, and diminished apoptosis. However, beta-carotene did not show a similar protective capacity. Further, exposure to alpha-tocopherol by itself reduced cell proliferation rate.

Based on the results, researchers said, "UVA and UVB irradiation affected the intracellular redox state and increased the frequency of apoptosis in human melanocytes in vitro. alpha-Tocopherol might be a useful substance in protecting melanocytes from UV-induced damage".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the treatment of UVB-induced skin damage, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Protects the Liver Against Oxidative Stress,

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radical or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress presented in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

More precisely, exogenous factors, such as cigarette smoke, and endogenous factors, such as the oxidative burst from activated macrophages are some of the factors involved in the risk of oxidative stress.

Liver oxidative stress is a condition associated with overexpression of free radicals compared to those of antioxidant enzymes, observed by high levels of liver oxidative stress markers.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress scientists examined the protective effects of Taraxacum officinale (dandelion) root against alcoholic liver damage in HepG2/2E1 cells and ICR mice.

According to the tested differentiation
* 300 mM ethanol in vitro, showed an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species and a 39% decrease in the cell viability.

* In 300 mM ethanol injection mice, the application of hot water extract (TOH) from T. officinale root restore all the changes of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the liver, compared no effects of ethanol-extract (TOE).

* In mice alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity, TOH (1 g/kg bw/day) with ethanol injection exerted a liver
protective effect against liver toxicity observed by the decreasing of liver stress markers such as serum of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase,...

* Mice treated by ethanol plus TOH showed a strong improvement of the levels of the liver antioxidants such as catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " the amelioration of malondialdehyde levels indicated TOH's protective effects against liver damage mediated by alcohol in vivo. These results suggest that the aqueous extract of T. officinale root has protective action against alcohol-induced toxicity in the liver by elevating antioxidative potentials and decreasing lipid peroxidation".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a liver protective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit the Risk of Kidney Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.

The kidneys formed a second detoxed organ in the body after the liver not only plays an essential role in regulating electrolytes, blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin,... but also filters blood that passes into the tubules.

In the urinary system, kidneys reabsorbed some necessary substances back into the blood, while waste, such as urea and ammonium are deposited into pelvis then into the ureter to the bladder for secretion.

Kidney Cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of kidneys.
At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance way to infect other organs' tissues.
For example, if kidney cancer spreads to the lung is called kidney cancer with lung metastases.

At the very early stage of the kidney, cancerous tumors are localized on the surface of the kidneys.

The most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell cancer.

The causes of kidney cancer are unknown. Some researchers suggested that genetic mutation, cigarette smoking, obese, family history,..... and exposed to chemicals, such as asbestos and benzene are all associated with increased risk of kidney cancer.

Kidney cancer affects only 2% of the general population. Approximately 14 percent of the US population suffer some forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD), including 661,000 cases of kidney failure.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for reducing risk chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of cruciferous vegetable consumption in the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

The meta-analysis included 3 cohort and 7 case-control studies retrieved via both computerized searches and review of references.

According to the summary of the calculation of the relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the highest vs. the lowest consumption of cruciferous vegetables,
in cruciferous vegetables consumption group (RR = 0.73; 95% CI, 0.63-0.83) and subgroup of case-control studies (RR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.60-0.78), compared to statistically insignificant in cohort studies (RR = 0.96; 95% CI, 0.71-1.21).

No heterogeneity and publication bias was detected across studies.

In other words, the meta-analysis supported the cruciferous vegetable consumption for decreasing the risk of renal cell carcinoma.

However, because of the limited number of studies, researchers said, "further well-designed prospective studies and researches need to be conducted to better clarify the protective effect of cruciferous vegetables on renal cell carcinoma and potential mechanism".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of kidney cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
