Omega 3 Fatty Acids Suppress Cancer Cachexia in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas, a vital organ is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.

More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.

* production of juices combined with juices from the intestines helps to do the job of breaking down protein, carbohydrates and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.

*  Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. They don't even know why people with the same health conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to pancreatic cancer, while others do not.

The most common risk factors of pancreatic cancer are similar to those of common cancers, including age, family history, gender, ethnicity, smoking, being overweight or obesity and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.

Cancer cachexia is a condition a multifactorial syndrome associated with an ongoing loss of skeletal muscle mass.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with pancreatic and bile duct cancer.

According to the administration of Racol®, an enteral nutrient formulated with omega-3 fatty acids to patients with unresectable pancreatic and bile duct cancer at 4 and 8 weeks after, pre-administration and administration showed a strong activity that increases skeletal muscle mass at both 4 and 8 weeks.

In other words, Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation protects the skeletal muscle mass associated with cancer cachexia in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer may improve cancer.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the reduction of cancer cachexia in patients with pancreatic cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Moronic Acid Inhibits Parameters Associated with Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

Diabetes is the most common type of chronic disease besides cardiovascular diseases.
Antidiabetic activity is a process that uses certain forms of medications, including herbal medicine to
limit the progression of diabetes and improve the quality of life of patients.

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most commonly acquired or adultery diabetes is type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of Morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids are the main constituents of acetonic extract from Phoradendron reichenbachianum (Loranthaceae), on diabetes.

In a  non-insulin-dependent diabetic rat model, daily-administered morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids (50 mg/kg) significantly lowered the blood glucose levels at 60% since the first day until the tenth day after treatment than untreated group (p<0.05).

Furthermore, both compounds diminished the plasmatic concentration of cholesterol (CHO) and triglycerides (TG), returning them to normal levels in the blood samples obtained from diabetic rats.

Pretreatment with 50 mg/kg of each compound also induced significant antihyperglycemic effect after glucose and sucrose loading (2 g/kg) compared to the control group (p<0.05).

Most importantly, compounds 1 and 2 induced inhibition of the elevation of 11β-HSD 1 activity found in type 2 diabetes at 10 μM.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " morolic and moronic acids have shown sustained antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic action possibly mediated by an insulin sensitization with consequent changes of glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides".

Taken altogether, moronic acids combined with tocotrienols may be considered supplements for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale), the Anti Bacterial Infection Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

A biofilm is a system that can be adapted internally to environmental conditions by its inhabitants. In other words, biofilm-forming from bacteria is one of the common forms of bacterial infection,  affecting up to 80% of human bacterial infections.

In biology, biofilm used by the bacteria as a natural defense mechanism for bacteria to survive under harsh environments, by attaching to a solid surface in a large community, including the skin, teeth, and mucosa.

Bacterial initiates biofilm formation with an aim to greatly enhance survival in hosts and cause chronic infections, leading to long-term inflammation and tissue damages.

The formation of a biofilm of bacteria may go through 2 stages, the adhesion phase is the stage that the bacteria attach to the surface or accumulates on a surface, After the adhesion phase, the bacteria enter the colonial phase, where the bacteria continue to grow, leading to the formation of dense bacterial aggregates.

Infectious diseases are a class of diseases caused by the invasion of pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisted of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

Most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne.  You can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of a potential of methanolic leaf extract of Taraxacum officinale plant as a function of bio-inspired green synthesis for the fabrication of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on some straits of the bacterium.
According to the tested differentiation,
* The AgNPs showed strong antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Haemophilus influenza.

In other words, the application of AgNPs promoted the optimal function of the herbal leaf extract on the tested bacterium by releasing the extract directly into the bacteria.

* The biosynthesized AgNPs also showed antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cell line in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " results clearly indicate that biosynthesized AgNPs could be used as effective nano-drug for treating infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant bacterial strains in the near future".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Improves Nonrestorative Sleep in Human Study

By Kyle J. Norton

Why sleep is so important? you might already know that a normal night of sleep is about eight hours as recommended by most doctors.

Why it is important, because during sleep our bodies repair the wear and tear of muscle tissue, consolidate memories, and release hormones to regulate our growth and appetites and enhance the immune system, etc.   sleep disorders can reduce the functions of the immune system in fighting against disease and sickness.

Nonrestorative sleep (NRS) is a condition in which the sleep has not been sufficiently refreshing or restorative upon waking, despite sleeping an adequate number of hours, accompanied by daytime impairment, pain, fatigue, and electroencephalogram (EEG) arousals in non-REM sleep in some patients.

In other words, NRS is a peripheral symptom of insomnia or as a feature of medical conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

* Insomnia
Insomnia is a sign and symptom of sleep disorder in which a person has difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality, including nonrestorative sleep, which can lead to substantial impairments in the quality of life and functional capacity of an individual.

Most adults have experienced insomnia sometimes in their life. According to statistic, more than 30% of the population suffers from insomnia, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime, and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.

* Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia, according to the American College of Rheumatology 1990 Criteria for the Classification of Fibromyalgia in the newly proposed criteria for the classification of fibromyalgia are 1) widespread pain in combination with 2) tenderness at 11 or more of the 18 specific tender point sites(a) as a result in responding to pressure.

* Chronic fatigue syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a medical disorder that cannot be explained by an underlying medical condition, characterized by persistently extreme fatigue that never goes away regardless of treatment for at least 6 months.

The exact causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the conditions are the results of viral infection and chronic stress syndrome.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of sleep disorders, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) on patients with nonrestorative sleep (NRS).
According to the Restorative Sleep Questionnaire-weekly version (RSQ-W) questionnaire and other test assays,  in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled interventional study in NRS population, a daily supplement of ashwagandha extract compared with placebo in subjects with NRS at 6 weeks from baseline,
*  Exerted Anti-anxiety effects.

* Relieved insomnia and stress-induced depression.

* Reduced cortisol concentrations and the immunosuppressive effect of stress.

* Lowered  CRP by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory responses in the body.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a therapy for the treatment of nonrestorative sleep (NRS), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum) Inhibits the Risk of Prostate Cancer Through Phytochemical Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.

The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the prostate tissue due to the alternation of DNA.

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell in the prostate can spread to the distance away to inject other healthy tissue and organ, leading to a secondary metastasis through lymph and blood.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

The common sites metastases of prostate cancer are bone, lymph nodes, lung, liver.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of prostate cancer. However, they do know the increase in age, family and personal history, ethnicity, genetic preposition, a poor diet, being overweight or obesity are some of the prevalent risk factors of prostate cancer.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, represented 21% of all new cancer cases and 4,100 men died from prostate cancer, and 10% of all cancer deaths.

The 5 years survival rate of localized prostate cancer is 100% and 98% of that of survivors are alive after 10 years compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with the prostate gland, researchers investigated the flavonoids, found on peas, on the cell cycle progression of human LNCaP prostate cancer cells.

According to the experimental analysis,
* In human LNCaP prostate cancer cells, Genistein, a member in the group of flavonoids, arrested the cell cycle at the G2/M phases, by suppressing cyclin B expression involved in cell cycle division.

* Furthermore, genistein induced the expression cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21, which plays a critical role in the regulation of cell cycle progression at G1 and S phase without depending on the activation of p53.

* Apigenin and luteolin also increased p21 levels, compared to those of quercetin that did not.

Additionally, apigenin induced p21 production through a p53-dependent pathway, but luteolin did so in a p53-independent manner.

Based on the results, scientists said, " flavonoids are potent regulators of cyclin B and p21 for cell cycle progression, which may play some roles in the prevention of carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of prostate cancer,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibits Menopausal Symptoms of Breast Cancer Survivors

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

The development of cancer can be divided into three different stages
* Initiation
Initiation is characteristic by irreversible mutation of DNA of a particular cell which does not undergo DNA repair (by enzymes) or undergoes faulty DNA repair, including gene deletion or insertion, gene slices, etc.

* Promotion
In the promotion stage, the mutation cells involve in uncontrolled growth and proliferation of mutated cells as it promotes the expression of its mutation gene and in its replication. In time these cells lose their normal abilities and just reproduce.

* Progression
In the progression stage, the cancerous cells invade nearby tissues and migrate to other tissues via lymph or blood

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissues. At the late stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other organs and tissues from the original site.

The study of bioactive green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) was found to decrease the progression of breast cancer cells with Her-2/neu overexpression, through many mechanisms.

Unlike general breast cancer which processes either receptors for estrogen or progesterone and/or receptors with a protein called HER2, triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that does not share the aforementioned characteristics.

In other words, triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors of estrogen or progesterone or genetic preposition.

Compared to the malignant nature, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers are highly invasive which can grow and spread quickly to other tissues and organs through lymph and blood.

Also compared to other breast cancer, with decreased risk after 5 years, triple-negative breast cancers have a substantial higher recurrent rate within 5 years after treatment.

Triple-negative breast cancer shares the symptoms similar to those of breast cancer and risk factor except in the form of the genetic preposition.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the association between dietary intake of soy or cruciferous vegetables and breast cancer treatment-related symptoms among Chinese-American (CA) and Non-Hispanic White (NHW) breast cancer survivors.

The joint cross-sectional study led by the Georgetown University included 192 CA and 173 NHW female breast cancer survivors (stages 0-III, diagnosed between 2006 and 2012) recruited from two California cancer registries, who had completed primary treatment.

Based on the Patient-reported data on treatment-related symptoms and potential covariates collected via telephone interviews,
* Soy foods and cruciferous vegetable intake ranged from no intake to 431 and 865 g/day, respectively, and was higher in CA survivors.

* Higher soy food intake was associated with lower odds of menopausal symptoms (≥ 24.0 vs. 0 g/day, OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.25, 1.03), and fatigue (≥ 24.0 vs. 0 g/day, OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.22, 0.84), particularly in NHW survivors only.

* Compared with low intake, higher cruciferous vegetable intake was associated with lower odds of experiencing menopausal symptoms (≥ 70.8 vs. < 33.0 g/day, OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.25, 0.97) in the overall population.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the treatment of breast cancer survivors' menopausal symptoms and fatigue, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ursolic Acid Inhibits the Onset of Insulin Resistance in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance is a condition in which cells that convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver ignore the signal of the hormone insulin signaling.

In other words, patients with insulin resistance are hyperglycemic. The syndrome is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes.

Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in the clogged up insulin receptors.
As the signals of hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the body.

According to statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those aged 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.

There are no single causes of insulin resistance. Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, overweight or obese, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors that induce the risk of the condition.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed insulin resistance.

The most common symptoms of patients with insulin resistance are tiredness, hunger and difficulty concentrating.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the ursolic acid effects on insulin resistance (IR) and inflammation induced by the excess of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in obese.

The study included 40 male Wistar rats that were randomly assigned to eight groups (n = 5).
* One group was used for time 0.

* Three groups were labeled as OBE (control): receiving high-fat diet (HFD; fat content 45.24% of energy) during 3, 6, or 9 weeks;

* Three groups UA-PREV: exposed to simultaneous HFD and UA during 3, 6, or 9 weeks to evaluate UA preventive effects;

* One group UA-REV: receiving HFD for 6 weeks, followed by simultaneous HFD and UA for three additional weeks to analyze UA reversal effects.

According to the analysis of the measurements were performed after 3, 6, or 9 weeks of treatment,
* UA significantly decreased adiposity, IR, hyperinsulinemia, triacylglycerides, and cholesterol levels.
* UA also inhibited the VAT mRNA expression of MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1), the key chemokines that regulate migration and infiltration.

* UA induced the increase of anti-inflammatory proteins IL (interleukin)-1β and IL-6, in the adiponectin levels.
* UA metabolic effects demonstrated in this study support its potential therapeutic utility to improve IR, and inflammation observed in obesity and diabetes.

Taken altogether, ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapies in the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance (IR) and inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
