Lycopene, the Natural Antioxidants that Inhibits the Risk of Dyslipidemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit the oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species.

Antioxidants also play a critical role in the prevention of the oxidative stress induced by a chain of reaction as a result of over-expression of free radicals that can only be stopped with the expression of antioxidants produced by the host or from the dietary sources.

More precisely, oxidative stress is caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Epidemiologically, over time, oxidative stress induces damage of protein, lipid, and cell DNA that lead to the incidences of chronic disease, including heart disease, RA and cancers.

In cancer, antioxidants are molecules that process the capability to protect healthy cells against oxidative stress-induced DNA alternation.

In cardiovascular disease, antioxidants reduce the fragility and “permeability” in capillaries and prevent the clotting up of arteries due to oxidation.

In RA, antioxidant inhibits the rheumatoid joint fluid containing significant amounts of hydroxyl radical.

The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of the energy of essential molecules and boosting the immune system. According to the free radical theory, over time, the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS), can also induce skin aging.

In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals occurred in our body every day.

However, in people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich with antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.

Dyslipidemia is a condition with an abnormally high amount of lipids (e.g. triglycerides, cholesterol and/or fat phospholipids) in the blood.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in a young healthy subject.

The study included blood collection of 18 men and 9 women with restriction of lycopene-containing foods for 1-wk (LYr), after a fasting state and 3 h after an HFm and a low-fat meal (LFm).

Compared to the blood sample collected on pre- and post-meals following 1-wk of 80 mg/day lycopene supplementation (LYs) under continued dietary LYr in the fasting state, researchers found that
* LYs compared with LYr not only evoked a >2-fold increase in plasma lycopene but also increased plasma beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol.

* However, LYs did not affect plasma nitrate/nitrite, a biomarker of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, a biomarker of lipid oxidative stress, vascular- and intercellular-adhesion molecules or C-reactive protein, the biomarkers of inflammation.

In other words, HFm-induced dyslipidemic state was inhibited by LYr or LYs but did not affect the plasma malondialdehyde, C-reactive protein, or adhesion molecules.

The results suggested that 1-wk of LYs increased plasma lycopene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol do not have an effect on the plasma lipid-soluble antioxidant pool, biomarkers of vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in the fasted state as well as during dyslipidemia induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects.

In other words, plasma lycopene consumption inhibits dyslipidemia but does not affect the changes of parameters induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects in the short term.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Non-soy Legume Inhibits the Over Expression of Serum Uric Acid that Causes Gout

By Kyle J. Norton

Uric acid, the form of ions and salts is a by-product of chemical after the body breaks down purines, the substance is found in many foods, including Asparagus, Bacon, Beef, Bluefish, Bouillon, Calf tongue, Carp, Cauliflower, Chicken, Chicken soup, Codfish, Crab, Duck, Goose, etc..

High levels of uric acid in blood serum can be harmful, leading to gout and forming of kidney stones.

Hyperuricemia is a condition of an excess of uric acid in the blood caused by reduced renal function.

The most common causes of hyperuricemia are genetics, insulin resistance, hypertension, hypothyroidism, obesity, diet, medications such as diuretics, and consumption of excess alcoholic beverages.

Gout mostly affected one joint is an acute and recurrent condition of arthritis as a result of uric acid building up in the blood, inducing joint inflammation.

The causes of gout are the result of high levels of uric acid in the body that can lead to the forming of crystals causes of inflammation due to your body can not get rid of uric acid or have made too much uric acid.

Reduced intake of meats and seafood and foods containing higher levels of uric acid, such as alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) in patients with gout may be necessary.

According to the New York University School of Medicine/Langone Medical Center, the prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia has increased dramatically during the last several decades, to the point that gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the United States, affecting approximately 8 million Americans and contributing to great numbers of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease.

The most common medication for the treatment of gout is Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by reducing pain and inflammation during an attack.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with overexpression of purine, scientists examined the association between the consumption of non-soy legumes and different subtypes of non-soy legumes and serum uric acid (SUA) in elderly individuals with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome.

The cross-sectional analysis was conducted in the framework of the PREDIMED-Plus study that included 6329 participants with information on non-soy legume consumption and SUA levels

According to tested analysis,
* Individuals in the highest tertile (T3) of total non-soy legume, lentil, and pea consumption, had 0.14 mg/dL, 0.19 mg/dL, and 0.12 mg/dL lower SUA levels, respectively, compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1),

* Chickpea and dry bean consumption showed no association.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "despite being a purine-rich food, non-soy legumes were inversely associated with SUA levels...prevalence".

Taken altogether, non-soy legumes may be considered functional foods for the treatment of diseases associated overexpression of serum uric acid (SUA), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Bean Promotes Anti- Colon Cancer Activity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of specific organs.

Most cases of primary cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor.

At the advanced stage, the most malignant cancer cell can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluids circulation.

The colon formed a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon tissue. Most cases of colon cancer start with the alternation of cells DNA on the surface of the inner lining colon tissue before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor.

Colon cancer is relatively very common, slowly growing and progressing cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, colorectal cancer including colon and rectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

The lifetime risk of colon cancer developing is approximately 1 in 23 for men and women, inclduing  71% of colon and  29% of rectal cancer. Believe it or not, only  39% of colon patients are diagnosed with the localized-stage disease.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a strong impact on the induction of colon cancer developing.

Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman said, "Consumption of red meat might be related directly to the incidence of CRC or indirectly because a diet high in meat tends to be low in vegetables, fruit, and fiber".

And, "Evidence that diet has an effect on the incidence of CRC is only moderate and might be affected by the multifactorial nature of CRC. Making appropriate choices across food groups, particularly with respect to fruit, vegetables, and fiber, is the key to healthy eating".

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent compound which processes chemopreventive activity, researchers examined BN999, a fermentation product of soybean, black bean, and green bean mixture in the inhibition the growth of human colon cancer.

Application of the mixed product showed a significant effect on inhibiting the growth of mouse CT-26 colon cancer xenografts from a patient's tumor that was implanted into syngenic BALB/c mice, without causing obvious side effects.

Furthermore, BN999 induced apoptosis in colon cancer cells without affecting the healthy cells.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking into account co and confounder wrote, "these data suggest that BN999 has the potential to be used as cancer chemoprevention or therapeutic agent".

Taken altogether, green beans used combined with fermentation product of soybean, the black bean may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Leafy Veggies Process Bile Acid Binding Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Bile acids synthesized from by oxidation from cholesterol in the liver, flowing to the gallbladder to aid digestion.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed for our body to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Bile acid-binding is a process that interferes with normal fat digestion and absorption including the prevention of absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.

In other words, binding of bile acids (BAs) may have a strong effect to lower blood cholesterol levels by increasing the excretion of bile acids in the stool and reducing the amount of bile acid returning to the liver.

By inhibiting the levels of bile acid caused by a certain type of liver/bile duct disease such as partial biliary obstruction, levels of cholesterol can be controlled.

Conventionally, the effects of bile acid sequestrant are limited. Low doses of 8 gram/day of Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, which binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption can lower LDL cholesterol by 10%-15% compared to high doses of 24 gram/day of only 25%.

In other words, bile acid-binding medicine such as Cholestyramine, used alone are less effective, compared to statins in lowering LDL cholesterol.

The most common symptoms associated with the intake of Cholestyramine are constipation, diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers compared the bile acid-binding potential that lowers the risk of heart disease and cancer of various vegetables.

Compared to Cholestyramine (a cholesterol-lowering, bile acid-binding drug) that was used as the positive control treatment and cellulose as the negative control, researchers found that
* Relative to cholestyramine, in vitro bile acid binding on dry matter basis was for the collard greens, kale, and mustard greens, 13%; broccoli, 10%; Brussels sprouts and spinach, 8%; green bell pepper, 7%; and cabbage, 5%.

In other words, collard greens = kale = mustard greens showed the strongest healthy-promoting potential in bile acid-binding compared to the following lesser extent of > broccoli > Brussels sprouts = spinach = green bell pepper > cabbage.

More importantly, steam cooking significantly improved the in vitro bile acid binding of collard greens, kale, mustard greens, broccoli, green bell pepper, and cabbage compared to vegetables raw (uncooked).

More precisely, Inclusion of steam-cooked collard greens, kale, mustard greens, broccoli, green bell pepper, and cabbage in our daily diet may have the potential in improving the healthy levels of blood cholesterol.

Collectively, researchers said, "These green/leafy vegetables, when consumed regularly after steam cooking, would lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, advance human nutrition research, and improve public health".

Taken altogether, green leafy veggies may be considered functional foods for lowering blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Regular Intake of Vegetables, Fruits, Fish, and Tea Associated with Reducing the Risk Anxiety Symptoms

By Kyle J. Norton

The central nervous system is a part of the nervous system of the brain and spinal cord with the function of integrates information it receives from for the entire nervous system, and control all the workings of your body.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered as neuro diseases.

Mental illnesses or mental health disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions that affect your mood, thinking, quality of life and behavior.

Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress and poor diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods and less in fruits and vegetable and whole-grain are some of the key contributors in the development and progression of chronic diseases, including neurological diseases.
Anxiety is a mental disorder characterized by worry about future events and fear of current events.

People experience anxiety differently. Some people feel a sudden moment of anxiety just a bad feeling, it comes and goes, only lasting a short time. Depending on how people cope with the moments of anxiety, the events can be brief or last a few days.

However, in some persons, if anxiety does not go away, they may require treatment from the related field specialists.

If you are frequently experience symptoms of nervousness, restlessness, or being tense feelings of danger, panic, or dread rapid heart rate rapid breathing, or hyperventilation,..... you may have developed an anxiety disorder.

Conventionally, Treatment of anxiety is totally depending on the nature of the anxiety disorder and individual preferences. Often, treatment combines different types of therapy and medication.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders, scientists examined prepregnancy dietary patterns and prospective variations on anxiety symptoms from mid-pregnancy to early postpartum in Brazilian Women.

A prospective cohort study included 207 healthy pregnant women who were followed at 5 to 13, 20 to 26, and 30 to 36 gestational weeks, and once at 30 to 45 days postpartum.

According to the analysis of The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory returned from the participants
* The mean anxiety symptom scores were 40.4, 40.5, and 37.2 for the second trimester, third trimester, and postpartum, respectively.

* The rate of variation of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score was 0.535 (95% CI -0.035 to 1.107; P=0.066) and -0.010 (95% CI -0.018 to -0.002; P=0.019) when accounting for gestational age and quadratic gestational age, respectively.

* The dietary pattern associated with the anxiety symptoms found in the common-Brazilian pattern, comprised mainly of rice and beans (β=-1.200, 95% CI -2.220 to -0.181; P=0.021)

* The healthy pattern comprised mostly of vegetables, fruits, fish, and tea were found to be associated with negatively prospective changes in anxiety symptoms.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "High adherence to the common-Brazilian or healthy patterns was negatively associated with higher anxiety symptom scores from mid-pregnancy to early postpartum in this group of Brazilian women".

In other words, regular intake of vegetables, fruits, fish, and tea in women during the pregnancy was associated with the reduced risk of anxiety.

Pinto Bean's Lectin, the Anti Cancer Cell Proliferative Antioxidant

By Kyle J. Norton

Proliferation is a process of cancer growth associated with an abnormally high rate of cancer cell division, leading to rapid overgrowth of the tumor.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Cancer cell proliferation by dividing unlimitedly, compared to normal cells that die after a certain cell cycle division.

More precisely,
* The growth of normal cells
Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process without even notice, every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.

Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again due to our body growth inhibitors.

Unfortunately, skin cells sometimes overgrow while healing, leading to scar to the skin.

*The primary tumor; size and growth
A primary tumor or original tumor that the tumor progression that yields a cancerous mass.

Some cancers can begin in several places, such as lymphomas and leukemias. Most cancers can not be detected until they formed a small grape-like lump.

Cancer cells need 42 doublings before it can produce enough cancer cells to cause death.

According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, In 2018, approximately 1,735,350 cases of cancer were diagnosed in the US and the disease also caused the death of 609,640 Americans.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the antiproliferative effects of Lectins (hemagglutinins) from the common edible bean Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Hokkaido large pinto bean.

Pinto bean is also known as common bean, genus Phaseolus and the family Fabaceae. It has a mottled appearance of darker reddish-brown spots on a lighter brownish beige background, thus appearing painted or spotted.

According to the tested analysis of a 60 kDa dimeric hemagglutinin with a blocked N-terminus was isolated in large yield (190 mg/60 g) from the pinto beans,
* The administration of 60 kDa showed an inhibitory proliferation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (CNE2), human breast cancer (MCF7), and hepatoma (HepG2) cells.

* The IC50 values were considered relatively low among lectins of different P. vulgaris cultivars toward HepG2, MCF7, and CNE2 cells after treatment for 48 h were 8.1, 6.07, and 7.49 μM, respectively,

In other words, the lectin found in the pinto bean as sugar-binding proteins or glycoproteins with various biological activities exerted a promising remedy for the treatment of cancers in vitro.

Taken altogether, Pinto beans may be considered a promising anti proliferative functional food, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Onion and Garlic, the Natural Anti-Endometrial Cancer Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

The endometrium is the inner lining of the mammalian uterus and very susceptible hormone change, particularly to the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is a late adulthood cancer in which the cells of the endometrial lining of the uterus have growth uncontrollable or become cancerous as a result of the alternation of cells DNA.

At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes, vagina.

The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, never been pregnant, obesity and the use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.

It's the fourth most common cancer among women overall, after breast cancer, lung cancer, and bowel cancer.

According to the statistic, the risk of endometrial cancer among women is 1 in 7000. Every year, about 40,000 women in the US are diagnosed with the disease.

Women who carry certain mutation genes, such as BRCA1 or the BRCA2 are associated with an increased risk of endometrial cancer.

Depending on the stage and grade of cancer, chemotherapy such as Doxorubicin, Cisplatin. Paclitaxel, Carboplatin, Topotecan may be necessary after surgery with certain side effects.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers compared the relationship between onion and garlic intake and endometrial cancer, using data from an Italian case-control study.

According to the results of validated and reproducible FFQ of the multi-center case-control study of 454 endometrial cancer cases and 908 controls, who were admitted to the same hospitals for a wide spectrum of acute, non-neoplastic conditions.

Compared with non-users, the OR of endometrial cancer for successive categories of onion intake were 0.94 (95% CI 0.72, 1.21) for <2 portions/week and 0.40 (95% CI 0.22, 0.72) for > or =2 portions/week.

In other words intake of onion showed a significant inverse trend in the risk of endometrial cancer. The OR for an increment of one portion (i.e. 80 g) of onions per week was 0.81 (95% CI 0.70, 0.95).

Furthermore, the OR of garlic for successive categories of intake were 0.89 (95% CI 0.68, 1.15) for intermediate use and 0.62 (95% CI 0.42, 0.92) for high use, with a significant inverse trend in risk (P = 0.02).

Collectively, researchers said, "Our study found a moderate protective role of allium vegetables on the risk of endometrial cancer".

Taken altogether, garlic and onion may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
