Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), the Anti-Inflammatory Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Conventionally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common medical drugs such as aspirin. ibuprofen in reducing inflammation associated with pain-relieving.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists investigated the prepared an extract of Euphrasia officinalis, a traditional folk medicine, to synthesize gold nanoparticles (EO-AuNPs) anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys conditions, etc.

According to tested analysis, the successful synthesis of AuNPs by E. officinalis showed significant anti-inflammatory activities detected by a model of LPS-induced upregulation of inflammatory mediators and cytokines.

More precisely, AuNPs by E. officinalis inhibited the levels of nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-1β, and IL-6 in RAW 264.7 cells.

Furthermore, EO-AuNPs exhibited little cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 cells at 100 µg/mL concentration after 24 hours.

Pretreatment with EO-AuNPs also significantly reduced the phosphorylation and degradation of inhibitor kappa B-alpha and inhibited the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 involved the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Additionally, EO-AuNPs suppressed LPS-stimulated inflammation by blocking the activation of JAK/STAT pathway associated with cytokines and growth factors.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "The synthesized EO-AuNPs showed anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, suggesting they may be potential candidates for treating inflammatory-mediated diseases".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cleaver(Galium aparine), inhibits the Melanoma Cell Metastasis in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

Most cases of melanoma start in melanocytes on skin before spreading to the nearby tissue. In the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis, through the circulation of blood and fluids.

The most common sites of melanoma metastasis are the lung and breast.

The most common symptoms are visible by examing the change of skin, including the sores that can not heal itself, redness or swelling, persistent itching, tenderness and pain and particular, change of skin color and bleeding off of a mole compared to the normal moles.

The 4 most common types of skin melanoma include
* Superficial spreading melanoma, the type of cancer has a tendency to spread grow outward and spread across the surface of the skin, accounted for 70% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Nodular melanoma normally grows down into the skin and has a tendency to spread more quickly than other types of melanoma skin cancer.

* Lentigo malignant melanoma, most common in the older population, making up approximately 15% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Acral lentiginous melanoma, most common in people with darker skin. Cancer first moves outward before spreading deeper into the skin.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 96,480 new melanomas will be diagnosed (about 57,220 in men and 39,260 in women) in the US. The condition also causes the death of 4,740 men and 2,490 women.

Believe it or not. most cases of melanoma are found in older adults. The average age diagnosed with melanoma is 63.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers investigated the Gallic acid (GA) found in herbal Cleaver in the inhibition of the growth of human cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

GA decreases the expression of MMPs MMPs mRNA levels in A375.S2 human melanoma cells in stimulating the cancer cell metastasis.

Furthermore, GA processed antimetastatic potential by decreasing the invasiveness of cancer cells.

Moreover, this action of GA was involved in the Ras, p-ERK signaling pathways with function to communicate a signal from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell to induce the inhibition of MMP-2 associated with cancer spreading in A375.S2 human melanoma cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These data, therefore, provide evidence for the role of GA as a potential cancer chemotherapeutic agent, which can markedly inhibit the invasive capacity of melanoma cells".

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Gobbles Up Triple-Negative Invasive Breast Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk. There are also rare cases that breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

At the advanced stage, after colonizing the entire breast the adance stage, malignant cancers can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.

Unlike general breast cancer which processes either receptors for estrogen or progesterone and/or receptors with a protein called HER2, triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that does not share the aforementioned characteristics.

In other words, triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors of estrogen or progesterone or genetic preposition.

More importantly, triple-negative breast cancer was found to infect women under the age of 40 and women of African or Asian ancestry in the US, compared to breast cancer in the White.

Particularly, according to the epidemiological study, younger women and in women of African ancestry are susceptible to a higher risk of basal-like triple-negative breast cancers.

Compared to the malignant nature, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers are highly invasive which can grow and spread quickly to other tissues and organs through lymph and blood.

Also compared to other breast cancers, with decreased risk after 5 years, triple-negative breast cancers have a substantial higher recurrent rate within 5 years after treatment.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of cancer, researchers investigated the effects of Ficus carica leaves on triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells.

According to the tested differentiation, the application of Ficus carica leaves promoted the gene expressions associated with apoptosis.

Furthermore,  Ficus carica leaves also demonstrated significant activity in the induction of S phase cell cycle arrest by changing the expression of cyclin-dependent kinases involved in the cancer cell cycle division.

The cell mobility associated with metastasis. in the cells was also inhibited by the application.

Most importantly, 2 chemical compounds bergapten and psoralen found in the F. Carica leaves also had similar anticancer effects as F. Carica leaf extracts.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "F. Carica leaves might be a good source to develop drugs for suppressing cancer-cell growth and migration to treat triple-negative breast cancers".

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of triple-negative breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccli Processes Anti Nasopharyngeal Cancer Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic and medical conditions characterized by cells growth irregularly and disorderly in the tissue of a specific organ.

Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of organ tissue caused by the alternation of the cell DNA.

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes, based on the 2013–2015 data.

In 2017, about15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer. Cancer in the same year also causes the death 1,790 of children and adolescents Americans.
The nasopharynx is the upper part of the pharynx, connecting with the nasal cavity above the soft palate that allows a person to breathe through the nose.

Nasopharyngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by cells growth irregularly and disorderly in the tissues of the nasopharynx.

Most cases of nasopharyngeal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the nasopharynx.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is quite rare in the United States). The risk of cancer is less than one case for every 100,000 people.

Epidemiologically, some patients at this stage may also experience symptoms of frequent ear infections, hearing loss and headaches.

The exact causes of nasopharyngeal cancer are unknown. Gender, family history, ethnicity, where you live, poor diet, infected by the Epstein-Barr virus are some of the prevalent factors of nasopharyngeal cancer.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers compared the effects investigate the role of miRNAs from broccoli in human nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC).

Where microRNAs (miRNAs), a small non-coding RNA molecule found in plants, animals and some viruses have been documented as having an important role in the development of cancer.

According to the analysis of a total of 84 conserved miRNAs and 184 putative novel miRNAs in broccoli by sequencing technology, the most abundant miR156a mimic inhibited the EMT of NPC cells in vitro.

The molecular genetics 3' UTR of Junctional adhesion molecule A (JAMA) associated with cancer cell migration and tight junctions was inhibited by the miR156a mimic on the tested EMT of NPC.

Collectively, researchers said, "These miRNA profiles of broccoli provide a fundamental basis for further research. Moreover, the discovery of miR156a may have clinical implications for the treatment of patients with NPC".

Taken altogether, broccoli which consists of microRNAs may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of atherothrombotic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Inhibits Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1, 2) Infection

By Kyle J. Norton

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) primarily causes oral herpes, including cold sores and fever blisters around the mouth and on the face.

Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) primarily causes genital herpes and  genital herpes outbreaks

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to the cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

In most cases in a healthy individual, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.

In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.

Most cases of infection except those of viral infection are treated by topical antibiotic cream and/or oral antibiotics.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin infection, researchers investigated the effects of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) extracts Oximacro(®) against Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) infections.

In vitro, the novel cranberry extract Oximacro(®) and its purified A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs-A) inhibited HSV-1 and HSV-2 replication.

Furthermore, Oximacro(®) prevented the adsorption of HSV-1 and HSV-2 to target cells.

Moreover, Oximacro(®) and its PACs-A targeted the viral envelope glycoproteins gD and gB to enter cells, thus resulting in the loss of infectivity of HSV particles.

Most importantly, Oximacro(®) completely exerted continuously its anti-HSV activity even at acidic pHs (3.0 and 4.0) and in the presence of 10% human serum proteins, and conditions that mimic the physiological properties of the vagina.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Oximacro(®) as an attractive candidate for the development of novel microbicides of natural origin for the prevention of HSV infections".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered immune-modulatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit the Risk of Gastric/Stomach Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of stomach tissue.
Due to the small size at the early stage, gastric cancer is asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the stomach, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.

The most common symptoms of gastric cancer are stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron-deficiency anemia.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of cancer, aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause the disease onset as cancer has been found to have a peak incidence between 50 and 70 years of age.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-invasive cancer activity researchers examined the relationship between consumption of cruciferous vegetables (CV) in the risk of gastric cancer.

According to the meta-analysis that summarize available evidence from epidemiological studies published reports of CV intake and gastric cancer were identified using MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science databases through to the end of September 2012, including 16 case-control and 6 prospective studies,
* The pooled studies showed a significantly inverse association between CV (relative risk = 0.81; 95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.88) intake and gastric cancer risk, with little heterogeneity (Q = 27.27, P = 0.292, I(2) = 12.0%).

* In a separate analysis, the case-control studies of CV intake yielded significant results compared to the borderline statistical significance of CV intake yielded in the prospective studies.

* Moreover, significant results were consistent for high-quality studies, for North American, European, and Asian studies, for studies on males, and for studies on non-cardia gastric cancer.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "... this meta-analysis provides evidence that high intake of CV was inversely associated with the risk of gastric cancer and non-cardia gastric cancer in humans.

Taken altogether, CV with rich phytochemicals may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Vegetables and Fruits Show Inverse;y Associated with the Risk of Esophageal Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the tissue of the esophagus due to the alternation of the cell DNA.

More precisely, esophageal cancer can be a result of DNA alternation of the cells that line the upper part of the esophagus or glandular cells that line the lower part of the esophagus, connecting to the stomach.

At the advanced stage, most cases of esophageal cancer after penetrating the wall of the esophagus tend to spread to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 17,650 new esophageal cancer cases will be diagnosed, including 13,750 in men and 3,900 in women.

Also, in 2019, esophageal cancer will also cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 in men and 3,060 in women.

The 5-year survival rate of people diagnosed in the local stage of esophageal cancer is 45%, much less than other cancer, including 100% of breast cancer.

Believe it or not, esophageal cancer is more common among men than among women. The lifetime risk of esophageal cancer in the US is 1 in 132 in men and about 1 in 455 in women.

Patients with esophageal cancer at the very early stage due to the very small size of the tumor are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, esophageal cancer tends to travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common areas of metastasis of esophageal cancer are lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach, and chest.

On finding a potential plant that processes anti-malignant tumor, activity researchers investigated the association between vegetables and fruits consumption and risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) and gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA)

According to the Netherlands Cohort Study in 1986 consisting of 120,852 Dutch men and women aged 55-69 filled out a questionnaire on diet and other cancer risk factors and after 16.3 years of follow-up
* 101 ESCC, 144 EAC, 156 GCA, 460 GNCA cases were identified.

* Total vegetable consumption was nonsignificantly inversely associated with EAC and ESCC risk, but not with GCA and GNCA risk/

* There were significant inverse associations with raw vegetables and EAC risk [RR per 25 g/day: 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68-0.98], and Brassica vegetables and GCA risk (RR per 25 g/day: 0.72, 95% CI 0.54-0.95).

* Total fruit consumption was associated with a nonsignificantly decreased EAC risk. Citrus fruits were inversely associated with EAC and GCA risk (RRs for highest vs. lowest intake: 0.55, 95% CI 0.31-0.98 and 0.38, 95% CI 0.21-0.69, respectively).

* Particularly, current smokers, vegetables and possibly also fruits intake was inversely associated with ESCC and EAC risk.

Based on the evidence, scientists said, "Consumption of (specific groups of) vegetables and fruits may protect against subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer:.

Taken altogether, vegetables and fruits may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
