Eye disease is a general term of conditions associated with the damage of the optic nerve and impaired vision, including disease of the cornea and macular degeneration.

According to the results from the primary efficacy parameter in this double-blind, reference- controlled, randomized, multicenter study of 215 patients with pain in the lower and upper back and motion and the. secondary efficacy parameters included pain at rest, pain on palpation, and functional impairment, high concentrations of the treatment product showed a significant amelioration of pain on active motion (P<5 x 10 -9 ), pain at rest (P<.001), and pain on palpation compared to the reference product which was clinically highly relevant.

The high-concentration product, exerted a significantly better global efficacy and faster onset of effects.

Tolerability of the highly concentrated study product was good to excellent in all patients.

Based on the results, researchers said, "Study results confirm the known anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of topical (Symphytum cream. As a new finding, applicability in certain forms of back pain can be concluded".

Herbal Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) Improves the Symptoms and Quality of Life in Gonarthritis Patients

Arthritis is a general form of the inflammatory disease associated with the inflammation of one or more joints.

The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness found mostly in the aging population.

The most common types of arthritis that affect people in the US are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The most common caused of arthritis is a joint injury that did not heal properly, metabolic abnormalities caused by overexpression of uric acid and infection-induced bacteria or virus.

However, there are some cases of arthritis caused by autoimmunity, a condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joint tissues, such as in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

According to the information provided by the Arthritis Foundation, in the US, approximately 54 million adults are living with the condition.

Believe it or not, Almost 300,000 babies and children have arthritis or a rheumatic condition.

Gonarthritis is a type of arthritis associated with ankle degenerative disorder involved in the knee joint related to overload, or to age or systemic diseases, accompanied by inflammation in some cases.

The first symptom of gonarthritis is a pain in the knee, including the initiation of a prolonged period of inactivity or rest. 

In other words, the initial pain only begins to subside after a few minutes, or after taking a few steps.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of arthritis, scientists examined the formulation MA212 (Rosaxan), a composed of rosehip (Rosa canina L.) puree/juice concentrate, nettle (Urtica dioica L.) leaf extract, and devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens DC. ex Meisn. or Harpagophytum zeyheri Decne.) root extract on symptoms of gonarthritis Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa. 

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys conditions, etc.

According to the 12-week randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind parallel-design study of 92 patients who were treated either by MA212 (40 mL, n = 46) or placebo (n = 44) daily, 

* The initial WOMAC subscores/scores did not differ between groups.

* During the study, their means significantly improved in both groups.

* The pre-post change of the WOMAC pain score (primary endpoint) was 29.87 in the MA212 group and 10.23 in the placebo group. 

In other words, the MA212 group exerted a strong and significant superiority in the improvement of the symptoms of gonarthritis compared to the placebo group.

*  MA212 group showed both physical and mental quality of life significant improvement compared to placebo, 

* Furthermore, there was a trend towards reduced analgesics consumption with MA212, compared to placebo

Moreover, researchers suggest, "physicians (pChi < 0.001) and patients (pChi < 0.001) rated MA212 superior to placebo. MA212 was well tolerated. This study demonstrates excellent efficacy for MA212 in gonarthritis patients".

Taken altogether, Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a decoction for the improvement of gonarthritis symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
