Herbal Bilberry in the Prevention and Treatment of Psoriasis

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease caused by speeding up the life cycle of skin cells that lead to patches of abnormal skin.

Psoriasis may be localized which causes red, dry, itchy, and scaly skin patches in the affected area.

In cases of severity, psoriasis can cover the body completely.

Some patients also experience symptoms of thickened, pitted or ridged nails and swollen and stiff joints.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor for preventive measure.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified, however, researchers believed that genetic proposition exacerbated by certain factors such as weather, injury, illness, or stress are some of the most causable factors that induce the onset of the condition.

Other risk factors associated with psoriasis may include skin injury that did not heal properly, people who are obese and side effects of long term use of certain medicines such as oral steroids.

Some researchers suggested smoking that has a strong impact on the immune system may also be one of the major causes of psoriasis in smokers.

Dr. wrote, "A number of inflammatory immune-related conditions have been associated with smoking, including psoriasis. Smoking affects the onset of psoriasis".

And, " Several pathophysiological mechanisms may explain the association of psoriasis with smoking, including oxidative stress, interaction with signaling pathways active in psoriasis, and vascular influences".

The findings strongly suggested, if you smoke, you are at a higher risk of psoriasis

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural and therapeutic ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis, researchers
a cosmeceutical formulation based on boswellic acids and  Vaccinium myrtillus seed oil in patients with psoriasis.

The double-blind study is to compare a novel BA formulation (containing Bosexil(®), INCI [International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients]: lecithin, Boswellia serrata resin extract) with a placebo formulation and a formulation of Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) seed oil.

More precisely, patients with psoriasis or erythematous eczema were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to Bosexil(®), V. myrtillus seed oil, or placebo.

During the experiment, Bosexil(®) and the V. myrtillus seed oil treatment significantly improved psoriasis, scales in comparison with placebo.

Formulation of Vaccinium myrtillus seed oil exerted a similar effect as those of Bosexil(®) without any case of worsening compared to placebo.

Furthermore, V. myrtillus seed oil improved itch and erythema in 66.7% and 77.8% of patients, respectively compared to the Bosexil(®) formulation of (60% of cases) and erythema (60% of cases) without any case of worsening, respectively.

The results clearly suggested that V. myrtillus seed oil and Bosexil(®) formulation process a strong anti-psoriasis activity without side effects.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of psoriasis, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene the Best Anti Cardiovascular Disease Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle. Depending on the location of heart muscle damage or the blood vessel blockage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart, is a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65. Believe it or not, more than 6.5 million Americans are living with the condition of heart failure.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the US. More precisely, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US  every year are caused by heart disease.

Furthermore, every year about 735,000 Americans has a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

The exact causes of cardiovascular disease are not cleared. However, epidemiologically family history, age ethnicity, gender, medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes has been found in most patients with CVD.

Some researchers in the examined the correlation between a high-fat diet and cardiovascular disease in obese patients suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be one major culprit that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Jane E Freedman wrote, " According to the National Center for Health Statistics (1999), 61% of adults in the U.S. are overweight (body mass index [BMI] 25 to 29.9 kg/m2), and 26% are obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). Elevated BMI, particularly caused by abdominal or upper-body obesity, has been associated with diseases and metabolic abnormalities including hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease.".

And, " clearly established diseases associated with high-fat or high-calorie diets can be offset by the use of nutritional supplements. Although these findings beckon us to draw broader implications, even if proven true in larger studies, it is doubtful that this will lead to a recommendation of high-calorie, high-fat diets".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the effect of lycopene by a meta-analysis.

According to the 14 studies identified by the search in the medical literature of the database of Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to October 2016,
* Lycopene exerted a significant inverse association with a pooled risk ratio (RR) of 0.83 in the risk of CVD.

* Furthermore, dietary lycopene intake was statistically significant in the reduction of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) with an RR of 0.87 and stroke with an RR of 0.83.

* Lycopene biomarker concentrations were also inversely associated with the risk CVD.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Higher lycopene exposure is inversely associated with a lower risk of CVD".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion Suppressed Weight Gain in Obese Animal Model

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, inclduing over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Most common causes of obesity are associated with
* An increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods and red meat.

* An increase in physical inactivity.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition and use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

Epidemiologically, obese people are associated with an increased risk of diseases and health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Some researchers suggested that by dietary changes, increased physical activity and behavior changes have been found to enhance weight loss in obesity. In extremely obese subjects, prescription medications and weight-loss surgery may be the only options.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effects of
garlic oil and onion oil on serum lipid levels in hyperlipidemia in an animal model.

The study included 96 Sprague-Dawley rats randomly allocated into eight groups which received repeated oral administration of volatile oils extracted from garlic and onion for 60 days, based on their body weight and serum levels of triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC).

According to the tested assays compared to the baseline, the volatile oils of garlic and onion suppressed weight gain induced by HFD accompanied by the decrease of adipose tissue weight.

The decreased levels of TG, TC, and LDL-C and increased the serum level of HDL-C were also found in the treatment group compared to rats in the hyperlipidemia model groups.

Furthermore, treatment with volatile oil also protects the liver against the hepatic steatosis by improving the effects of the lipid profile.

In other words, volatile oils extracted from garlic and onion inhibit the risk of obesity by improving the liver and adipose tissue in fat metabolisms.

Dr. Yang C, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "Our results implied that garlic oil and onion oil have anti-obesity properties that can counteract the effects of an HFD on body weight, adipose tissue weight, and serum lipid profiles".

Moreover, the assessment of the effect of onion peel tea (OPT) in a mouse model of high-fat-diet-induced obesity suggested that BALB/c mice fed a high-fat diet for three weeks, followed by a normal diet with or without OPT for 28 days suppresses the increases in body weight and level of epididymal fat tissue, similar to those of the aforementioned results.

Additionally, OPT administration also significantly reduced the serum concentrations of total cholesterol on day 14 and those of glucose and leptin on day 28.

These results suggested OPT inhibits the parameters associated with the onset of obesity.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered functional food/foods for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Kills Ovarian Cancer Cells In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The ovaries formed part of the female reproductive system are the oval-shaped ovum that connects to the fallopian tubes and attaches to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament.

Normally, the left and right ovary take a turn to release an egg every month. The ovaries also play a critical role in the production of estrogen and progesterone in the regulation of the process of women menstrual cycle including the release of an egg that migrates down the fallopian tube.

Most common disease associated with ovary dysfunction is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age.

Ovarian cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by abnormal cells growth of ovarian cells which start on the surface of the inner lining of the ovarian tissue. Over time, after penetrating into deeper layers in the ovary, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other nearby healthy tissues or organs, causing secondary metastasis.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US. According to the statistics adapted from the American Cancer Society's publication, Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, approximately 21,880 women in the United States were diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  In the same year, ovarian cancer also causes the death of  13,850 American women.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not identified. However, epidemiologically, aging, genetic preposition, race, never pregnant women, family history, long-term chemical exposure, and menopausal hormone therapy MHT are some prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.

Dr. Prof. Rod Baber wrote, "Increased risk persisted after stopping the treatment for some years among women who had used MHT for more than 5 years".

And, "Overall, this increased risk was similar for European and North American perspective studies and for both estrogen-only and estrogen plus progestogen preparations but differed across the subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancers, being increased only in serious and endometrioid subtypes and decreased in mucinous and clear cell subtypes".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of ovarian cancer researchers examined the effect of cranberry flavonoids (flavonols and flavan-3-ols) SKOV-3 and OVCAR-8 ovarian cancer.

According to the tested assays, treatment with quercetin aglycone and PAC DP-9 from the cranberry flavonoids exhibited the strongest activity that induces apoptosis compared to other bioactive compounds.

The combination also inhibited the caspase-3 activation and PARP deactivation associated with apoptosis and increased the cisplatin sensitivity against the tested cell lines.

In SKOV-3 cells, PAC DP-9 also reduced the expression and activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) associated with cancer cell differentiation and proliferation.

Furthermore, quercetin aglycone and PAC DP-9 deactivated MAPK-ERK pathway and the overexpression of proteins associated with the promotion of cancer cell growth.

Moreover, the combination also promotes the gene expression of cancer suppression and arrested cell cycle progression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Overall, this study demonstrates promising in vitro cytotoxic and anti-proliferative properties of two newly characterized cranberry flavonoids, quercetin aglycone, and PAC DP-9, against ovarian cancer cells".

Taken altogether, cranberry processed abundantly quercetin aglycone and PAC DP-9 may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha, the Anti-Insulin Resistance Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes caused by the inability of  the body to use insulin properly to convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver.

According to the statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those age 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is not caused by a single factor. The increase in age, ethnicity, overweight or obese, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors found in patients with the condition.

Epidemiologically, over time, insulin resistance associated with a genetic preposition can reduce the function of the beta cells in the pancreas, leading to the onset of prediabetes and diabetes.

Unmanaged insulin resistance has been found to induce polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss associated with hyperglycemia, particularly in patients with hypertension.

Conventionally, there is no effective treatment for insulin resistance. However, a change of diets such as low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets or very-low-calorie diet and regular physical activity patients to prevent the risk of obesity may reduce the effects of insulin resistance.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of hyperglycemia, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera root (WS) on insulin resistance in an animal model.

Selected 48 Wistar-Albino male rats in the study were randomly divided into four groups (n=12); Group I as control, Group II as sham-treated with WS by 62.5mg/g per diet, Group III fructose-fed rats received 10%W/V fructose, and Group IV fructose- and WS-fed rats.

According to the analysis of blood samples collected at the end of the experiment, group III showed a significant increase in the levels of blood glucose, insulin, homeostasis associated with insulin resistance compared to controls.

Furthermore, levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, and TNF-α levels in blood serum of group III fed by fructose were also increased compared to control.

Expression of TNF-α and IL-6, levels induced inflammation have been found to cause insulin resistance by affecting glucose uptake, epidemiologically.

However, Treatment with WS in group rats fed with fructose demonstrated significant inhibition of increases in glucose, insulin, HOMA-R, IL-6, and TNF-α,  the parameters associated with insulin resistance.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter study.

Phytochemical Alliin Promotes Balanced Ratio of Gut Microbiota

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system with an aim to protect our body against the foreign micro pathogens which may infect the body tissue.

In the early phase of infection, after receiving the message from the central nervous system, the white blood cells of the immune first-line defense macrophages stimulate the production of blood palette to the cover the site of tissue damage and injury and inflammatory cytokines to destroy the microorganisms which try to enter the body through the wound.

Depending on the size of the injury, most small tissues damage are healed by itself within a day or weeks. In some cases, stitches may be needed.

However, if the immune system can not drive out all the invader in a period of 3-8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade inflammation.

Over time, long-term low-grade inflammation may cause tissue damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Gut microbiota is a community of bacteria found in the gut. In a healthy individual, the ratio of good and bad bacterias are balanced. However, if the bad bacteria are overgrowing compared to good bacteria, it may lead to dysbiosis which has been found to induce chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Most common risk factors associated with the imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota include the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle.

In other words, if you follow a healthy diet with a high in vegetables and fruits and fewer in processed foods, saturated and trans fat and red meat accompanied by moderate exercise, you may have done a job to protect the balance of gut microbiota.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the protection of gut microbiota, researchers examined the effect of alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (ACSO)) on plasma ethanol concentration due to alcohol intake by accelerating ethanol metabolism and preventing ethanol absorption from the gut in rats.

Injection of high ACSO content (Garlic-H) suppressed elevation in concentrations of ethanol and acetaldehyde in plasma in the experimental rats without affecting much of the plasma acetate.

Furthermore, the inhibition of alcohol ethanol was attributed to the activity of alliin in the promotion of the activities of alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, a group of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of aldehydes.

Compared to the absorption of ethanol from the stomach and jejunum, alliin ACSO and Garlic-H suppressed the absorption of ethanol from the stomach and jejunum, but the suppression in the jejunum was less than in the stomach.

In other words, alliin protects the gut microbiota by inhibiting ethanol absorption and accelerating ethanol metabolism.

In dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cell model, oral administration of alliin at 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the decrease of body weight, improved the DAI and decreased the infiltration of inflammatory cells in colonic tissues.

The levels of pro-inflammatory expressions and pro-inflammation activation proteins in the gut and content of NO, MDA, and MPO of gut stress markers were also inhibited by the injection alliin.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Our results show that alliin ameliorates DSS-induced ulcerative colitis and inhibits the inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells partly".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of gut microbiota imbalanced as seen in colitis patients, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical isobetanin, the Powerful Antioxidant In Beetroot

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the onset of oxidation caused by free radicals.

Free radicals, on the other hand, are unstable molecules that cause oxidation, with unpaired electrons in the outermost ring.

Free radical scavengers are types of antioxidants which play a critical to neutralize free radical before they can induce a chain reaction which can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons in the outermost are paired.

Overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the host body can lead to
oxidative stress, an indicator associated with the unbalanced ratio of the levels of antioxidants/free radicals

Epidemiologically, imbalance ratio of free radicals/antioxidants has been linked to the onset of many chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke due to cellular, lipid and protein damage.

However, free radicals have the potential to be extremely harmful contaminants and extremely helpful for the treatment of cancers through their cytotoxic activity because of its high reactivity,

Believe it or not, free radicals present in the body with a moderate amount are important to the body's cardio-functioning, including the promotion of vascular function.

Some researchers in the examination of the effect of antioxidant-rich foods in the risk-free radicals initiation suggested that diet rich in fruits and vegetables and less in meat and process foods have a lower risk of oxidative stress and oxidative stress-related diseases.

The National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health in the article "Antioxidants: In-Depth" wrote, "Several decades of dietary research findings suggested that consuming greater amounts of antioxidant-rich foods might help to protect against diseases. Because of these results, there has been a lot of research on antioxidant supplements".

And "Observational studies on the typical eating habits, lifestyles, and health histories of large groups of people have shown that those who ate more vegetables and fruits had lower risks of several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and cataracts".
Isobetanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard,...

On finding a potent ingredient for the treament of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the chemical constituents of betacyanin of Djulis (Chenopodium fromosanum), a native cereal plant in Taiwan.

Betacyanin of Djulis exhibited a significant antioxidant capacity at the maximum absorbance at 530 nm, depending on the pH.

Major chemical compounds that exerted a significant antioxidant capacity are betanin (47.8%), isobetanin (30.0%) with m/z 551.0, and armaranthin (13.6%), isoamaranthinee (8.6%).
