Ginger, the Potential Anti Dementia Functional Spice

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a kitchen and pungent for the prevention and treatment of dementia with no side effects, some studies showed.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Dementia is a medical and degenerative disease characterized by the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

The common causes of dementia are the progressive death of brain cells.

Epidemiologically, certain risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, excessive alcohol drinking, depression, lack of exercise and head injury are associated with the onset of dementia.

Medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity also affect the onset of the disease.

However, an unhealthy diet, in fact, the common cause of the onset of dementia in the Western world that many scientists are afraid to mention about.

Dr. Martha Clare Morris in the study "Nutrition and risk of dementia: overview and methodological issues" said, "A new diet, called MIND (Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay), incorporates many elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets but with modifications that reflect the best evidence for brain neuroprotection" and

The evidence in support of the relation of various nutrients and the Mediterranean diet to dementia has been inconsistent".

These results clearly suggested that if you follow the Western diet you are at a substantially increased risk of dementia.

On the finding the natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of dementia, researchers conducted a joint study led by the Kyung Hee University, to examine the effect of ginger chemical compound 6-shogaol in the modification of dementia.

6-shogaol, a bioactive component of ginger, may play an important role as a memory-enhancing and anti-oxidant agent against neurological diseases.

6-Shogaol also p[rocessed anti-neuroinflammatory effects lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced astrocytes (star-shaped glial cell of the central nervous system.) and animal models of Parkinson's disease, LPS-induced inflammation, and transient global ischemia.

Furthermore, application of 6-shogaol demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects against oligomeric forms of the Aβ (AβO) (plaque accumulation) in animal brains, and anti-scopolamine-induced memory impairment.

Moreover, application of 6-shogaol significantly protect the brain neuron against the pathogenic insults and destruction of nearby neurons in intrahippocampal AβO-injected mice and neurons in transmitting chemical and electrical signals throughout the body

More importantly, the chemical compound also elevated the nerve growth factor (NGF) involved in the regulation of growth, maintenance, proliferation, and survival of certain target neurons.

These result suggested that 6-shogaol may play a role in inhibiting glial cell activation and reducing memory impairment in animal models of dementia.

Interestingly, on finding the new chemical compound in ginger with the potential to treat dementia, researchers launched an analysis to fractionate the MeOH extract of I. jiadifengpi and found newly 6 chemical compounds

Compound 1 significantly enhanced neurite outgrowth in primary cell cultures of fetal rat cortical neurons and has the potential significantly to promote differentiation of multipotent neural stem cell line (MEB5 cells) into neurons.

Application of the MeOH extract of the root of Bangle (Z. purpureum) also exhibited neuritogenesis activity in PC12 cells at 25 μg/mL.

Chronic treatment with these compounds enhanced hippocampal neurogenesis in dementia model olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) mice.

At the final report, researchers wrote, "Compounds 5 and 6 had significant NGF-potentiating effects on PC12 cells whereas compound 5 enhanced prevention of amyloid β (Aβ) 42 aggregation".

Taken altogether, ginger with the abundant bioactive compound may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of dementia with no side effects.

Papaya Processes Anti Cellular Oxidative Stress Potency, Studies Found

By Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may process a potential effect in reducing the risk the diseases associated with the overexpression of oxidative stress, some scientists found.

Oxidative stress is the production of overexpression of free radicals in the body compared to levels of antioxidants. In other words, it is the imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant produced by the body.

Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons in the outer layer of the atom. The highly chemically reactive free radical are ready to steal the electron from other molecules, leading to the domino's effect that cannot stop until stabilized by antioxidants.

These chain reactions are caused by oxidative stress, the most leading causes of the development of numbers of diseases.

The prolonged period of high levels of oxidative stress in the body not only can cause damage but also can alter the DNA to healthy cells, thus increasing the risk of cancers.

Antioxidants are stabilized molecules which inhibited the oxidation caused by free radicals.

The human bodily antioxidant can be acquired either through dietary sources such as the intake of fruits and vegetable and supplements or produced by the antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidize, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

Patients with chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress are found to have low levels of antioxidant enzymes and overexpression of free radicals in the body.

Truly, free radicals have the duo effects, they can either harmful or beneficial to human health. Dr. István Bókkon in the study "Recognition of Functional Roles of Free Radicals" said, "production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are strongly regulated processes that play central roles in most cell signaling. During physiological and pathophysiology processes, ROS and RNS can act as secondary messengers and control gene expression, apoptosis, cell growth, cell cycle, cell adhesion, chemotaxis, protein-protein interactions, and enzymatic functions, Ca2+ and redox homeostasis, to name but a few functions". and

"ROS and RNS also act as signaling molecules in cerebral circulation and are required for signal processes such as synaptic plasticity, memory formation, and regulated production, release, and uptake of neurotransmitters".

However, overexpression of free radicals is always bad for our body.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongs to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

The chemical constituents of papaya include
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzylisothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.(a).

In the concerns of the cytotoxicity of AOM in the mediation of oxidative stress, researchers at the Sultan Qaboos University conducted an experiment of Azoxymethane (AOM) induced colon cancer in rats.

Eighty Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 4 weeks) included in the study were randomly divided into 8 groups (10 rats/group). Control group was fed a basal diet; the AOM-treated group was fed a basal diet and received AOM intraperitoneal injections for two weeks at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight, whereas the other six groups were received oral supplementation of PomPE, PapPE or SE, in the presence or absence of AOM injection.

AOM-induced ACF development and pathological changes in the colonic mucosal tissues increased oxidative stress through the expression of decreased glutathione depletion and increased lipid peroxidation in rat colonic cells.

Treatment of AOM with PapPE significantly ameliorated the cytotoxic effects of AOM.

The results address the important of PapPE in the inhibition of oxidative stress before initiating colon cancer.

In order to obtain more information of the ability of papaya epicarp extract (PEE) to protect against oxidative stress-induced insult in human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells, researchers at the Sultan Qaboos University, launched an investigation to examine the effect of PEE intervention on aluminum (Al)-induced cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells.

PEE was effective in protecting against Al-induced cell death in a dose-dependent manner.

PEE restored the Al-induced inhibition of folate-dependent methionine synthase activity and the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidases, and superoxide dismutase).

PEE ameliorated the Al-induced impairment of intracellular glutathione and total antioxidant capacity.

The collected information throughout the experiment suggested that papaya epicarp extract (PEE) protects the human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells against oxidative stress by improving the levels of antioxidants in the tested cells.

More importantly, in oxidative stress caused by overexpression of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))- in human SH-SY5Y neuronal cells, t papaya epicarp extract acted as a potent free radical scavenger that protects the neurons against H(2)O(2).

And, papaya epicarp extract ameliorated glutathione depletion, restored total antioxidant capacity and augmented the inhibition of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidases, and superoxide dismutase),

Taken altogether, papaya extract can be used as a functional dietary ingredient for the protection against diseases associated with the oxidative stress without inducing any side effects.

Say Good Bye to High Blood Cholesterol with Banana

By Kyle J. Norton

Banana may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, some studies suggested.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally elevated blood cholesterol.

Hyperlipidemia is not caused by an a single factor. However, the hereditary factors are the most common cause.

Other prevalent risk factors associated with the early onset of high blood cholesterol are a diet high in saturated fat and triglyceride levels.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, and hypothyroidism, may also promote hypertriglyceridemia.

Cholesterol produced by the liver or directly from dietary sources are necessary for the cell membrane and the production of the steroid hormone.

However, if cholesterol levels are elevated, large amounts of LDL or bad cholesterol can deposit in the arterial walls, leading to atherosclerosis.

The normal ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein, LDL) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein, HDL). Any levels that are lower than 4 are considered a healthy blood cholesterol.

Long-term and untreated high blood cholesterol can cause numbers of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, and diabetes.

If you are experiencing symptoms of chest pain or angina, pain while walking caused by the blocked arteries that are unable to send blood to the legs, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of high blood cholesterol.

High blood cholesterol is easy to treat by changing diet pattern, lifestyle and involving moderate physical activity.

Dr. Robert L. Rosenthal, at the Baylor University Medical Center, in the study "Effectiveness of altering serum cholesterol levels without drugs" said, " except for patients with extreme cholesterol elevations, consensus panels all promote dietary therapy as an initial step in the treatment of hyperlipidemia' and " a variety of dietary strategies designed to lower lipid levels, including the American Heart Association diet, the Ornish diet, the Mediterranean diet, exercise, phytosterols, fiber, soy products, and fish oil.

Therefore, the risk high blood cholesterol of people with a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetable, whole grain and less in saturated and trans fat, red meats and processed foods and lifestyle and involving moderate physical exercise are closed to zero.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

The research team at Okayama University in the finding the natural ingredient for lowering the cholesterol launched an investigation to examine the effect pulp of banana fruit (Musa sapientum L. var. Cavendishii) for its cholesterol-lowering effect in mice model.

Selected male rats were fed on a diet containing lard (50 g/kg) and cholesterol (5 g/kg).

Application of freeze-dried banana pulp showed a marked cholesterol-lowering effect when incorporated into a diet at the level of 300 or 500 g/kg,

Starch and tannin prepared from banana pulp were not responsible for the cholesterol-lowering effect. and banana lipids did not affect the concentration of serum cholesterol.

A rise of the concentration of serum cholesterol in mice group fed with dopamine, n-epinephrine, and serotonin was also reduced by the injection of the freeze-dried banana pulp.

Further examination also found that both soluble and insoluble fibers fractionated from banana pulp had a cholesterol-lowering effect, with the exception of cellulose.

Moreover, in the additional investigation of the hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects of ethanol extract of mature green fruits of Musa (green banana) in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, researchers launched a testing of the extract at two doses, 500 mg/kg body weight and 1000 mg/kg body weight in comparison to the standard drug, glibenclamide.

Rats administered with alloxan showed significantly increased levels of serum triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity.

Futhermore, lipid peroxides od rats administered with alloxan increased significantly while reduced glutathione (GSH) decreased considerably in liver and pancreas.

Oral administration of the ethanol extract of green fruits of Musa significantly decreased the levels of serum triacylglycerol, cholesterol and ALT activity.
More importantly, the green banana application significantly decreased the level of lipid peroxides while GSH content increased substantially in liver and pancreas.

The lowering cholesterol effect was found to dose independent. However, treatment with 500 mg/kg body weight of the extract showed a higher content of GSH and lower level of lipid peroxides in pancreas compared with glibenclamide.

Dr. Kaimal S, at the final report, wrote, "ethanol extract of mature green fruits of Musa AAA (Chenkadali) has antioxidant and hypolipidaemic properties and may be used for treating diabetes mellitus".

Taken altogether, banana and its extract may be considered s functional food for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

Celery, the Functional Vegetable for the Prevention and Treatment of Lung cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a veggie with the potential for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, some studies suggested.

Lung cancer is a chronic and medical condition caused irregular cell growth in the lung tissue due to DNA alternation.

Most cases of primary lung cancer start from the alternated cell on the surface of the inner ling of the lung.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the lung, the cancerous cell can travel a distance away from the lung to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

At the early of lung cancer, patients may not have any symptoms. however, as the tumor grows larger, it can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, leading localized pain and discomforts.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of lung cancer. Long-term cigarette smoking is one of the major risk factors associated with the substantial risk of the disease, according to epidemiological studies.

Other risk factors including long-term exposure to secondhand smoke and radiation have also increased the risk of lung cancer onset.

Dr. Beate Pesch, the lead scientist in the study "Cigarette smoking and lung cancer,..."Current male smokers with an average daily dose of >30 cigarettes had ORs of 103.5 for SqCC, 111.3 for SCLC, and for AdCa. In women, the corresponding ORs were 62.7,  108.6 and 16.8, respectively".

The risk of lung cancer increased proportionally to the increase of numbers of cigarettes daily depending on the types of lung cancer.

Male smokers are at a higher risk of lung cancer, compare to female smokers.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

In the concerns of the widespread of lung cancer in rural China, researchers at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, launched a study to evaluate the relationship between dietary intake of vegetables and fruit and lung cancer risk in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, northeast China.

The case-control study, conducted from 1987 to 1990, among 218 cases with the incident, histologically confirmed lung cancer and 436 controls admitted to the same hospitals as cases with non-neoplastic, non-lung diseases unrelated to smoking and other potential risk factors for lung cancer.

After taking a closed differentiation of the returned questionnaire, high intake of celery was found to be the most outstanding vegetable in lowering the cancer incidence compared to the high intake of Chinese cabbage, chives, and carrots.

Sadly, the OR was more than six-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of vegetables and more than four-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of fruit, as compared with never smokers reporting high intake of these items.

Futhermore, in the reaffirmation of vegetable intake in reducing the risk of lung cancer in the Tin Corporation (YTC) miners in Yunnan, researchers once against suggested that high intake of celery is associated to the lower risk of lung cancer.

However, the reducing risk of lung cancer also is dependent on the type of vegetable intake and the total volume of vegetable intake daily.

Taken all together, celery may be considered a functional vegetable in reducing the risk of lung cancer and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer without inducing any adverse effects.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada's Emodin, the Anti Breast Cancer Bioactive Compound

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient isolated from a herbal plant which processes a significant effect in reducing risk and treatment of breast cancer, some studies suggested.

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cells growth in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start either in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

There are also rare cases of breast cancer that start in other areas of the breast

The cause of breast cancer is the result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast.

According to statistic, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Genetic preposition, one of the prevalent risk factor associated with the increased risk of breast cancer has been under intensifying study in scientists over the world over a few decades ago, suggested that women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60%  most likely risk to develop breast cancer before the age of 70.

Another prevalent and most mentioned risk factor associated with the risk of the disease is obesity.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead author, in the concern of the correlated increased incidence of breast cancer among obese women launched an investigation to examine whether obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages.

After taking into account co and confounder, the doctors wrote, "The Million Women Study followed 1.2 million UK women ages 50 to 64 years for a mean of 5.4 years, including 45,037 with breast cancer, and identified a nearly 30% higher risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer with obesity". and "(But) a large body of evidence indicates that, although obesity is inversely associated with receptor‐positive breast cancer development before menopause".

Interestingly, the results strongly indicated, obesity is a risk factor of breast cancer in postmenopause but a reduced risk factor before menopause.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal plant bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, the herb also contains anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

In the finding a natural compound or whole food which process the potency for the treatment of breast cancer with little or no side effects compared to those of conventional chemo drug, researchers conducted a joint study led by the China Medical University to examine the anti-breast cancer effect of Emodin.

Human breast cancer cells Bcap-37 and ZR-75-30.were used in the study

The cell viability following emodin treatment was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Application of Emodin showed a strong effect in the inhibition of the growth and induction of apoptosis of breast cancer cells Bcap-37 and ZR-75-30 in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

The inhibitory activity was attributed to Emodin in reducing the level of a protein associated with inhibiting apoptosis and promoting oncogenesis, and proteins and antibodies associated with programming cell death and enhancing apoptosis.

Dr. CONG ZU the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "These findings indicate that emodin induces growth inhibition and apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. Emodin may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of breast cancer".

In mice bearing EO771 or 4T1 breast tumors, researchers at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine examine the effects of Emodin against breast cancer through varied mechanisms.

Application of Emodin showed a significant effect in the attenuation tumor growth by inhibiting macrophage infiltration and M2-like polarization, in promoting cancer cell growth, invasion, metastasis and accompanied by increased immune white blood cells in the host and reduced the new formation of blood vessels for the cancer proliferation.

The inhibition of the promotion of cancer cell growth, invasion, metastasis by emodin was associated with deactivation of genes on the promoters of M2-related genes in tumor-associated macrophages.

Dr. Iwanowycz S, at the final report, "emodin acts on both breast cancer cells and macrophages and effectively blocks the tumor-promoting feedforward loop between the two cell types, thereby inhibiting breast cancer growth and metastasis".

Taken altogether, Herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundant bioactive compound Emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.

Tualang Honey Which Kills Leukemia Cancer Cells In Vivo and Vitro, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a chronic and medical condition of body's blood-forming tissues including the bone marrow characterized by high numbers of abnormal white blood cells.

Most cases of leukemia start on the cells in the tissues the of bone marrow.

Bone marrow is a semi-solid tissue found within the spongy or cancellous portions of the bones.

In the stage system, patients with leukemia are classified into 5 different stages depending on the levels of abnormal white blood cell. treatment of leukemia is also depended on the size of the tumor and grade of metastasis.

According to the statistic, in the US, approximately 170,000 people will be diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 2018. In other words, every 3 minutes, a person in the US is diagnosed with blood cancer.

The 5 years of the survival rate of the patient with leukemia are totally depending on the types.
Patients diagnosed with chronic myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (AML) and acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL) have the 5 years survival rate of 68%, 86%, 274.% and 715 respectively.

However, in children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL), the 5 years survival rate is significantly higher. Children and adolescents between 5 - 15 years of age, and younger than 5 years of age have a rate of  91.8% and 94%, respectively.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of leukemia.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to radioactive such as radio and chemotherapy and smoking, inhaling Benzene and Formaldehyde, and the genetic preposition is associated with the increased risk of cancer.

Fircanis S, the lead scientist in the cancer tram at The Miriam Hospital in the examining the risk of leukemia in long-term smokers said, "current and ever smokers have 40% (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60; P < 0.001) and 25% (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.15-1.36; P < 0.001) increased risk of developing AML when compared with non-smokers" and "Intensity of smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 cigarettes per day was associated with RRs of AML of 1.27, 1.36, 1.55, and 1.77, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Duration of smoking of <20 and >20 years was associated with RRs of 1.07 and 1.44, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend)".

These results clearly suggested that the risk of leukemia is increased substantially and linearly to the years of smoking and numbers of cigarettes smoked daily

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find the natural whole food for the treatment of leukemia, scientists at the joint study led by the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences investigate the effects of the dietary combination of honey and Ardeh on chemotherapy-induced complications in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

The double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical-trial included a total of 107 AML patients who underwent chemotherapy for at least 30 consecutive days in Imam Reza and Ghaem teaching hospitals (Mashhad, Iran).

The treatment group was given a combination of 50 grams of honey and 150 grams of Ardehwas added to the treated group's diet for 30consecutive days, three times each day; while the untreated group was received their regular diet.

After one month, both groups were all examined and lab tests were taken by an internist and laboratory technicians.

The treatment group showed a reduction of symptoms of fever compared to untreated group.

Patients who were given the special honey and Ardeh compound also showed significantly less gastrointestinal complications, compared to the untreated group with no side effects.

Further analysis of the treatment group, researchers said, "(honey and Ardeh compound) ameliorate gastrointestinal complications and reduce fever and neutropenia in AML patients

These results indicated that Honey and Ardeh, the easily accessible materials can be used to attenuate symptoms caused by chemotherapy in AML patients.

Additionally, in the joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia to evaluate the antileukemic effect of Tualang Honey on acute and chronic leukemia cell lines, researchers showed that leukemia cell lines (K562 and MV4-11) and human mononuclear cell incubated with increasing concentrations of Tualang Honey display the presence of cell depredation followed by apoptotic bodies.

More precisely, application of Tualang honey induced 53.9% and 50.6% apoptosis on K562 and MV4-11, respectively, and 37.4% on the human mononuclear cell.

Taken altogether, Tualang honey used alone, and common honey combined with Ardeh may be used for the prevention and adjunct therapies combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of leukemia

Ginger, the Heart and Blood Vessels Friendly Functional Spice

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a profound and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, some studies found.

The cardiovascular disease is a medical condition associated with the heart and blood vessels, depending on the location of blood clots.

Most common causes of cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries, leading to reduced rich oxygenated blood flow to the heart, a major cause of the death of heart cells.

According to the John Hopkins statistics, approximately 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing about 2,200 deaths a day, averaging one death every 40 seconds.

Sadly to know that almost one out of every three deaths results from cardiovascular disease.

Epidemiologically, certain risk factors are found to associate with the onset of the condition, including lack of exercise, diabetes, use of tobacco, gender, genetic preposition, and excessive alcohol drinking.

However, poor diet was one of the preventable risk factors in the Western world. Researchers suggested that there is no coincidence but a correlation of the widespread cardiovascular disease in the US and the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades.

Diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and few in fruits and vegetables and whole grain have a strong and positive implication in the promotion of the onset of the disease.

Dr. Sonia S. Anand, the lead scientist in the study "Food Consumption and its impact on Cardiovascular Disease: Importance of Solutions focused on the globalized food system" said, "Evidence from different countries, age/race/ethnicity/socioeconomic groups suggest the health effects studies of foods, macronutrients, and dietary patterns on CVD appear to be far more consistent though regional knowledge gaps are highlighted".

And, "Poor quality diets are high in refined grains and added sugars, salt, unhealthy fats, and animal-source foods; and low in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish and nuts ( are associated to the onset of CVD)"

Therefore, by teaching the general public the role of diet that can prevent CVD, the writers continued, "a healthier food supply enables individuals to make healthier choices. Developing food systems that underpin healthier dietary patterns based on our consensus noted above involves improving the food supply by producing more heart-healthy foods and fewer foods associated with CVD".

These results clearly stated, a healthy diet with high in fruits and vegetable, whole grain fewer saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods can substantially reduce the risk of CVD.

Ginger officinale or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reconfirm the effects of ginger for the treatment of many aspects of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Nicoll R and colleagues conducted a study to look into ginger anti-cardiovascular disease activity.

In the animal model, application of ginger demonstrated a significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiplatelet, hypotensive and hypolipidemic effect to protect the tested animal against the onset of cardiovascular disease.

In the human trial, dosages of 5 g or more demonstrated significant antiplatelet activity.

These results suggested that ginger may have the potential to offer not only a cheaper natural alternative to conventional agents but one with significantly lower side effects.

Futhermore in the concern of the widespread of cardiovascular diseases in the Western world and the leading cause of death worldwide, researchers at the Katedra Technologii Żywienia Człowieka evaluated the effects of kitchen spice on the condition.

Ginger and the selected spices showed a strongly cardioprotective effect through their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

At the final report of the study, Dr. Kulczyński B, said, "selected spices (garlic, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and turmeric) (may be used )in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects.
