Herbal Cramp Bark(Viburnum Opulus), the Best Antioxidant Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

A free radical is a highly reactive atom with a single electron in the outer ring.

Free radicals produced in our body are a natural process derived either from essential metabolism through the processes of food intake or from external sources through directly contacting the skin or the air we breathe including ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Some foods are antioxidants producers such as fruits and vegetables and whole-grain, while others such as processed meats, alcohol are radicals producers. Particularly, fats and oils can easily be oxidized if they are cooked in high heat.

In order to counter the overexpression of free radicals which add to the body's burden, our body produces enzymes antioxidants and metal carrier proteins to neutralize them before they can cause damage.

Depending on the degrees of free radical invasion, antioxidant enzymes can be categorized into first, second, third and even fourth line of defense.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radical or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belongings to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with the menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of associated with oxidative stress diseases, researchers examined the antioxidant properties of fruit juices of six Viburnum opulus genotypes.

According to the antioxidant assays,
* V. opulus var. sargentii fruit juice demonstrated a remarkably stronger antioxidant activity, compared to others juice.

* Chlorogenic acid, the main phenolic compound in berry juices) depending on plant cultivar varied in the range of 0.54-6.93 mg/ml was found to be the dominant radical scavenger in V. opulus P3 (74%), compared to epicatechin and catechin (the main antioxidants in V. opulus var. sargentii) contributed to 40% and 23%, respectively.

More precisely, V. opulus var. sargentii followed by V. opulus P3 and V. opulus var. americanum possessed the highest antioxidant capacity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The obtained results may assist in selecting the most valuable V. opulus genotypes for the production of fruits possessing the strong antioxidant capacity and containing beneficial phenolic constituents".

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) depending on the types may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of diseases caused by oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Restores the Cardioprotective on Ischemic Post-conditioning (IPoC)

By Kyle J. Norton

Myocardial ischemia injury is a medical condition caused by severe impairment of coronary blood supply, leading to damage or dysfunction of the heart tissue.

Myocardial reperfusion is the process which restores the coronary blood flow after a period of coronary blockage, causing a severely reduced or no oxygen blood flow to the heart.

The condition severity is totally dependent on the intensity and duration of the coronary occlusion.
Myocardial ischemia injury  is considered a “silent” and goes undetected, causing a catastrophic event associated with hemodynamic deterioration and sudden death

According to the statistics from the WHO, in 2008, 12% of all death or approximately 7,254,000 deaths worldwide have directly or indirectly caused by myocardial ischemia injury.

In other words, coronary heart disease causes 1/4 total death in the worldwide population and 50% of the death of heart disease.

Most common symptoms of myocardial ischemia injury are neck or jaw pain, shoulder or arm pain, a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, and fatigue accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Most common causes of myocardial ischemia injury are a result of the plaque built-up on the coronary arterial wall due to long-term unhealthy diet with higher amount of fat and trans fat, red meat, processed food and fewer in fruits and vegetables.

However, advanced age, male gender, genetic preposition and high level of plasma homocysteine are some prevalent factors found in patients with myocardial ischemia injury.

Most patients with CHD also are found to have a sedentary lifestyle.

Some researchers suggested, the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades induced obesity may be the major culprit that celebrates the risk of myocardial ischemic injury.

Dr. Meng F, the lead scientist wrote, "Obese patients are more sensitive to myocardial ischemia, which has been linked with high mortality rates".

And "(High fat diet-induced)An impaired MIF/AMPK activation response (cellular stress response) and consequent reduced membrane Glut4 expression (in the heart muscle) may play an important role in increasing myocardial susceptibility to I/R in obesity".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention of myocardial ischemia‑reperfusion injury (MIRI), researchers examined the effect of lycopene (LP), a type of carotenoid, that restores the cardioprotective on ischemic postconditioning (IPoC) in hypercholesterolemic rats.

The experimental male Wistar rats induced hypercholesterolemia by cholesterol‑enriched diet for 12 weeks that results in ischemia and reperfusion pretreatment with intraperitoneally for 5 consecutive days prior to ischemia and reperfusion.

According to the tested analysis, low‑dose LP in combination with IPoC ameliorated myocardial histopathological changes by reducing the infarct size and release of cardiac enzymes.

Furthermore, the combination also decreased cardiomyocyte apoptosis in hypercholesterolemic rats.

Believe it or not, comapred to the combination, no beneficial effects were found by the same dose of LP or IPoC treatment when they were used alone.

Additionally, parameters that cause neuronal cell dysfunction, induced neuron oxidative stress and apoptosis were also attenuated by LP and IPoC

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "LP can restore the cardioprotective effects of IPoC on MIRI in hypercholesterolemic rats".

Taken altogether, lycopene may be used for the prevention and treatment of myocardial ischemia injury, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Elecampane (Inula helenium), the Promising Antiviral Herbal Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are disorders induced by organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

Out of trillions organisms present on the earth, only a few hundreds have been known to cause diseases.

Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person through direct or indirect contact with the infected patient. Others can be transmitted by insects or animals.

However, infectious disease, the most prevalent in third world countries are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.

Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and viruses.

A viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.

Anti-viral effects are an act of certain substances to cause the destruction of a virus.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

The most common viral infections are influenza. Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. the influenza virus A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, and running and stuffy nose and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus types C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of cold.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune system such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the antiviral activities and safety of three herbs (Brassica juncea, Forsythia suspensa, and Inula Britannica) used in traditional Korean medicine.

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to tested analysis,
* The number of phytochemical compounds detected via tandem mass analysis of B. juncea, F. suspensa, and I. Britannica was 5 (including sinigrin, m/z [M-H] = 358.02), 14 (including forsythoside A, m/z [M-H] = 623.19), and 18 (including chlorogenic acid, m/z [M-H] = 353.20), respectively.

* The ethanol extract of I. Britannica showed the most effective virus titration decrease, whereas its hemolytic and hepatotoxicity values were the most significantly different compared to the control.

In other words, I. Britannica shows the antiviral effects, particularly but to a lesser extent compared to B. juncea.

Taken altogether, Elecampane may be considered a remedy for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by viruses, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids, A Potential and Natural Anti Gastrointestinal Cancer Antioxidant

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

The gastrointestinal tract formed part of the digestive system is a series of hollow organs that form a long continuous passage from our mouth to our anus, including our mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

Gastrointestinal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the alternation of cell DNA in the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.

The most common gastrointestinal cancer is gastric cancer, which is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in men and the seventh most commonly occurring cancer in women.

According to worldwide statistics, over 1 million new cases were diagnosed in 2018 with the South Korean leading the map, second to Mongolia.

In other words, if you are Asian, you are at an increased risk of gastric cancer.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cell of the affected tissues can travel a distance away to infect the other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Epidemiologically, primary gastrointestinal cancer is more likely to spread to the stomach, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and ovarian cancer.

The exact causes of gastrointestinal cancer are not identified. However, genetic preposition, unhealthy lifestyle and medical conditions are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that a poor diet may have a strong implication on the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of digestive diseases, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on gastrointestinal (GI) cancer.

* n-3 PUFAs may exert their anticancer actions by influencing multiple targets implicated in various stages of cancer development.

* n-3 PUFAs especially imposed excellent actions of antiinflammation and antioxidation, as well as their restorative actions against gastrointestinal cancer developing by restoring or modifying the inflammation-associated lipid distortion and alteration of lipid rafts.

* However, the study of the effects of n-3 PUFAs against GI cancer is still limited.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of GI cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica May Suppress the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by wear and tear on joints.

The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty of moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.

Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse ina change of weather, at night and in the advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.

In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of hands, knees, but also cause inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.

The condition is a slow development disease, often starts in the 40s and 50s and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.

The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joint at a young age, obesity and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.

According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% in men and 13% in women.

Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight which have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, the genetic preposition of a patient can make such patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others do not. People with a joint injury that did heal properly in the younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting or other movements and the increase in age are associated with the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of aging-related diseases, scientists examined the angelica phytochemical, sodium ferulate, and a polysaccharide fraction on osteoarthritis animal models or in human chondrocytes stimulated by the pro-inflammatory cytokine, Interleukine-1β.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the experiment
* Sodium ferulate found in angelica exhibited marked anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties by inhibiting the TNF/TNFR signal transduction pathway associated with inflammation and autoimmunity.

* On another hand, the polysaccharide fraction which contains a mixture of various carbohydrates was found to promote proteoglycan biosynthesis in the cartilage matrix by stimulating the activity of the UDP-glycosyltransferases that synthesize the chondroitin sulfate chains of aggrecans.

In other words, both chemical compounds demonstrated strong protective effects against osteoarthritis through different mechanisms.

based on the findings, researchers said, "the combined action of sodium ferulate and polysaccharides fraction would prevent cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis and favor cartilage repair".

Taken altogether, herbal angelica may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols May be Used as Adjunct Therapy to Promote Chemo Drugs in the Treatment of Liver Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)/d-alpha-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles that optimize the ratio of doxorubicin (DOX) and elacridar (ELC) to target both LCSCs and liver cancer cells.

According to the analysis,
* DOX/ELC molar ratio of 1:1 was synergistic in HepG2 cells and HepG2-TS.
* Furthermore, NDEs significantly increased cytotoxic effects against both HepG2 and HepG2-TS compared with DOX-loaded nanoparticles (NDs) or ELC-loaded nanoparticles (NEs) in vitro.
* In vivo, the nanoparticles exhibited better tumor targeting, with NDE showing the strongest antitumor activity with lower systemic toxicity.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "These results suggested that NDE represented a promising combination therapy against liver cancer by targeting both liver cancer cells and CSCs".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Cabbage, the Natural Anti-Hyperlipidemia Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Believe it or not, about half of the U.S. adults (55%, or 43 million) are currently taking medicine associated with lower blood cholesterol.

There are many risk factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, such as people with diabetes, being overweight gain, physical activity, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be one of the silent cause of hyperlipidemia in the Western world.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers examined the effectiveness of microgreens in affecting lipid and cholesterol levels.

The study included C57BL/6NCr mice (n = 60, male, 5 weeks old) induced obesity (DIO) model were randomly assigned to six feeding groups: (1) low-fat diet; (2) high-fat diet; (3) low-fat diet + 1.09% red cabbage microgreens; (4) low-fat diet + 1.66% mature red cabbage; (5) high-fat diet + 1.09% red cabbage microgreens; (6) high-fat diet + 1.66% mature red cabbage for 8 weeks.

According to the results of differentiation
* Microgreen supplementation attenuated high-fat diet-induced weight gain.

* Furthermore, supplementation with microgreens significantly lowered circulating LDL levels in animals fed the high-fat diet and reduced hepatic cholesterol ester.

* Moreover, the levels of triacylglycerol levels, and expression of inflammatory cytokines in the liver were also inhibited by dietary microgreens.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested that microgreens can modulate weight gain and cholesterol metabolism and may protect against CVD by preventing hyperlipidemia.

Taken altogether, cabbage processes anti-hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
