#Honey Inhibits the Growth of #BladderCancer Cells, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural food source that processes the potential for the treatment of bladder cancer with no side effects, some studies suggested.
Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder.

Most cases of the primary bladder cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder tissue.

At the early stage, most bladder cancers do not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, the prostate can cause a distant metastasis to infect other healthy tissue and organ through the circulation of blood and fluids.

At this advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and blood in the urine caused by the proliferative tumor suppressing the nerve cells and breaking the blood vessels in the bladder.

Researchers do not the exact causes of bladder cancer. However certain risk factors such as tobacco use, aging, gender, ethnicity, long-term bladder condition, and exposure to chemicals are at a higher risk of the onset of the disease.

The warning from the FDA also suggested the diabetes drug pioglitazone for more than 1 year may have a higher risk of developing bladder cancer.

In fact, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed bladder cancer even they are associated with the increased risk all their life.

Although most scientists agree that tobacco use is the major cause of bladder cancer, genetic preposition, according to the epidemiological studies is also the substantial risk of bladder cancer, such as the genetic mutations in some chromosomal genes, such as FGFR3, RB1, HRAS, TP53, TSC1, and others, occur which form tumors in the urinary bladder.

Sadly, People with gene mutation are at the 70 % higher risk of bladder cancer compared to those do not.

Dr. Zhang X, the lead author in the study "Bladder Cancer and Genetic Mutations" specified, "The changes in the genes of human chromosome 9 are usually responsible for tumor in bladder cancer, but the genetic mutation of chromosome 22 can also result in bladder cancer". and "The 18 different bladder tumors were evaluated, and 11 (61 %) had genetic mutations of the p53 gene".

And, "The 18 different bladder tumors were evaluated, and 11 (61 %) had genetic mutations of p53 gene".

Honey, is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer without inducing any side effects, researchers at the University of Tsukuba conducted an experiment to examine the antitumor effect of bee honey against bladder cancer in vitro and in vivo.

The study included three human bladder cancer cell lines (T24, 253J, and RT4) and one murine bladder cancer cell line (MBT-2).

In vitro studies application of honey significantly inhibited the proliferation of T24 and MBT-2 cell lines by 1-25% honey and of RT4 and 253J cell lines by 6-25% observed by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling index, an indicator of early tumor response to the injection of honey was lower in vitro.

FCM showed lower S-phase fraction, as well as the absence of aneuploidy compared with control cells.

Flow cytometry (FCM). the measurement of cancer cells' physical and chemical characteristics showed a lower S-phase fraction and the absence of aneuploidy compared with control cells, an indication of inhibitory cancer cells by the application of honey.

Furthermore, In the in vivo, intralesional injection of 6 and 12% honey, as well as oral ingestion of honey, significantly inhibited tumor growth.

These results suggested that bee honey processes a significant activity for inhibiting the growth of T24, RT4, 253J, and MBT-2 bladder cancer cell lines in vitro.

And, Honey is also effective when administered intralesionally or orally in the MBT-2 bladder cancer implantation models.

Dr, Swellam T, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders wrote, " Our results are promising,,,,,, the mechanisms of the antitumor activity of honey".

Taken together, honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti-bladder cancer possibilities.

#Turmeric Extract Protects Liver Against Toxicity Induced by Doxorubicin (DOX), Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Liver toxicity or hepatotoxicity is a condition in the liver is damaged by chemical substances, including drug-induced liver injury is a cause of acute and chronic liver disease.
The liver is the largest internal organ not only processes the function in filtering the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also secretes bile that aids the function of the digestive system in digest food, build strong cell membranes, production of vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Symptoms of liver toxicity may include stomach pain, upset stomach, persistent tiredness, dark-colored urine but light-colored bowel movements, particularly in the expression of jaundice found in the skin and eyes.

Other researchers suggested that psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety and depression are also found in patients with liver toxicity.

The most common causes of liver toxicity are associated with drugs.

According to a critical analysis of the hepatotoxicity of drugs in LiverTox, 53% of drugs had at least one case report of convincing reports of liver injury and 48 drugs had more than 50 case reports.

Believe it or not, amoxicillin-clavulanate has been found to induce liver toxicity in approximately one out of 2300 users.

However, according to the study published by the Journal of Phytopharmacology, live toxicity can also be caused by interruption of the liver function in metabolizing substances.

Dr. Meagan Thompson, the lead scientist wrote, " The human liver metabolizes substances via oxidation, reduction, hydration, hydrolysis, condensation, conjugation, or isomerization. Interruption of these processes can lead to hepatotoxicity, causing liver cancer, cirrhosis, and Hepatitis C, respectively".

And "Such diseases are responsible for higher mortality rates worldwide. The present review focuses on highlighting various plants that are hepatoprotective, and hepatotoxic and the challenges faced by phytopharmaceuticals".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver toxicity scientists evaluated the therapeutic potential of Curcuma longa (200mgkg-1, po) and curcumin (80mgkg-1, po) for their hepatoprotective efficacy against mercuric chloride (HgCl2: 12μmolkg-1, ip; once only) hepatotoxicity.

According to the results from the testes assays, therapy of Curcuma longa or curcumin restored the HgCl2 administration that alters various biochemical parameters, including transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, bilirubin, gamma-glutamyl transferase, triglycerides, and cholesterol contents.

Furthermore, therapy of Curcuma longa extract or curcumin also inhibited a concomitant decline in the serum of protein and albumin concentration an indication of liver injury.

The findings suggested that Curcuma longa extract or curcumin processed the ability to alleviate the hepatotoxic effects caused by HgCl2 in rats.

In order to reveal more information about turmeric detoxed activity, researchers examined the protective effect of turmeric extract against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced liver toxicity in rats.

According to the tested assays, turmeric extract exerted multiple therapeutic activities that ameliorative effect against DOX-induced increased serum levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, nitric oxide, albumin in liver tissue

According to the Biochemical and histopathological findings, turmeric extract has multiple therapeutic activities by ameliorating the effect against DOX-induced hepatotoxicity.

Dr. Mohamad RH, the lead scientist said, "The present findings conclude that the turmeric extract has multiple therapeutic activities that block the hepatic....toxicities".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of liver toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Inhibits 5-FU Chemotoxicity and Improves 5-FU Chemotherapy in Cancer Patients, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be considered an adjunct therapy combined with the chemo drug in the improvement of the drug efficacy and reduction of chemo toxicity for the treatment of cancers, some scientists found.
Cancer is a class of chronic diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the tissue of specific organs, depending on the type of cancer.

Most cases of cancer are the result of the alternation of DNA in the cell located on the surface of the inner lining of an organ. Most patients may not experience any symptoms at an early stage.

However, as cancer progresses, the continued growth of tumors may cause pressure on the nearby healthy organs and nerve cells, leading to localized symptoms and severe pain.

At the 4th stage of cancer, malignant cells may metastasize to other organs a distance away from the original site.

According to the statistics from the National Cancer Institute, approximately, 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.

In 2017, over 15,000 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, and 1,790 died of the disease.
Chemo drugs are medicines used for the treatment of cancer by killing cancer cells that have been spread to other tissues or organs.

Chemotoxicity is the side effect of chemo drugs.

The most common symptoms of chemo drugs include the effect of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow, on hair follicles and cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system, probably due to the medicine designed to kill cells indiscriminately.

According to the information of the pharmaceutical company, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is one of the most powerful chemotherapy drugs ever invented by mankind.

The chemo drug used to treat a wide variety of cancers can kill cancer at every point in their life cycle.
Unfortunately, the drug can also damage heart cells and cause serious side effects, such as hair loss, breathlessness, feeling sick, and easily infected.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding a natural ingredient or whole food that processes chemopreventive properties and anti-chemo toxicity during cancer treatment, researchers evaluate the effect of Kelulut honey (KH), produced by the stingless bees from Trigona species against colon cancer induced in the animal model.

A total of 24 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 5 weeks are included in the study.
Rats were divided into 4 groups: (G1) untreated group not induced with AOM, (G2) untreated group induced with AOM, (G3) treated group induced with AOM, and (G4) treated group not induced with AOM.
Injection of AOM (15 mg/kg) was via intraperitoneal route once a week for two subsequent weeks to induce colorectal cancer.
The treatment groups were given oral administration of KH (1183 mg/kg body weight) twice daily for 8 weeks.

AOM injected group showed a significant increase in the total number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts (AC) and crypt multiplicity and damage of liver and kidney

After treatment of KH, the AOM group displayed a reduction of crypts and chemotoxicity by restoring the liver and kidney function observed by the blood profile.

Furthermore, KH was not toxically identified by the KH-treated group not induced with AOM.

These results suggested that KH may have a potential effect on inhibiting the toxicity caused by chemotherapy and improving the chemo drugs' activity without inducing any side effects.

Moreover, to find a natural whole food to overcome 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapeutic resistance and adverse toxicity in colorectal cancer, researchers looked into Manuka honey (MH), a rich source of bioactive compounds to examine its anticancer effects on human colon cancer HCT-116 and LoVo cells.

Compared to 5-FU alone, MH synergistically enhanced the chemotherapeutic effects of 5-FU, by reducing cell proliferation through the suppression of enzymes and proteins associated with the function of stimulating cancer cell multicity and activation of pathways associated with cell death programming.

Combined with chemo drug 5-FU, MH promoted the expression of antibody production and production of ROS in the induction of cytotoxicity activity against cancer cells without causing harm to the nearby cells and tissue.

This result was observed by the reducing antioxidants produced by the cancer cells and increasing oxidative stress in the tumor.

Additionally, MH also induced cancer cell apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

The findings clearly indicated MH could be a useful preventive or adjuvant agent in the treatment of colorectal cancer with 5-FU by inhibiting toxicity and cancer cell resistance.

Taken altogether, KH and MH can be considered functional foods for the prevention and adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancer without inducing chemotoxicity.

#Chamomile Promotes Wound Healing by Increasing Wound-Breaking Strength, and Protein Collage Content, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal chamomile expressed significant wound healing effect against injury and bacterial invasion induced more damage to the wound.
According to the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, C. nobile therapy at 5% C. nobile ointment was an effective antibacterial activity and accelerated the progression of wound healing, in vivo.

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species of daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae, used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Wound healing is a natural stage of recovery of body injury.

In a Wistar male rats (210.0±4.2 g) divided into five groups: negative control group (NCG) without diabetes; positive control group (PCG) with DM (alloxan, 45 mg/kg) study, groups treated with chamomile extract optimize the healing of traumatic oral ulcers in diabetic rats through the reduction of apoptosis in the regulated immune system.

In the review of skin wound healing of phytomedicine, Dr. Pazyar N, the lead author said, " The healing process proceeds in four phases: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling" and " Phytomedicine presents remedies, which possess significant pharmacological effects. It is popular amongst the general population in regions all over the world. Phytotherapeutic agents have been largely used for cutaneous wound healing.....(including chamomile".

The Roskilde Universitet, in support of the wound-healing effect of chamomile, suggested the extract of M. chamomilla administered topically has wound-healing potential in the linear incisional wound, according to an animal study.

Other studies also showed that chamomile proved effective in the treatment of oral mucositis in a hamster model.

Taken together, chamomile no doubt has consisted of significant wound-healing effects by exhibiting increased wound-breaking strength, and protein collage content through topical administration.
However, well-designed clinical studies are needed to confirm the clinical efficacy of this medicine in humans.

#Healthyfood #Onion's Sulfur Compounds in the Inhibition of Type 2 #Diabetes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream.
Type 2 diabetes (acquired diabetes), is a condition caused by either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly due to dysfunction of the insulin receptors.

In other words, type 2 diabetes is associated with the levels of insulin that were either blocked by the clog-up of the insulin receptors by fat and cholesterol or the death of beta cells which produce insulin in the pancreas.

Epidemiologically, the most common symptoms of diabetes are increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, stomach pain, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and vomiting.

However, some patients may also experience symptoms of blurred vision, depression, sleeping difficulties, appetite problems, and emotional stress.

Most common causes of diabetes are
* Metabolic syndrome, the cluster of conditions associated with the risk of diabetes, including high blood cholesterol, sugar, and blood pressure.

* Compared to type 2 diabetes, prediabetes is a condition of elevated blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

According to statistics, approximately 6 million or 13% of Canadians have prediabetes. Prediabetes if left unmanaged can develop into type 2 diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes, a condition of high blood glucose of pregnant women who are experiencing the symptoms only during pregnancy as a result of hormonal change

* Damage to the pancreas associated with reduced numbers or death of the beta cells.

* Influenza A viruses that commonly cause pancreatitis in naturally and experimentally infected animals.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, which a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient for the prevention of diabetes, researchers evaluated the effect of aqueous extract of garlic, white onion, and purple onion on subjects with diabetes.

Elevated levels of α-amylase and α-glucosidase involved in levels of blood glucose were inhibited by the aqueous extract of garlic, purple onion, and white onion in a concentration-dependent manner (0-4 mg/ml).

Additional differentiation also suggested that white onion had significantly (p < .05) stronger inhibitory effect on α-amylase (IC50 = 3.93 mg/mL) compared to those of garlic (IC50 = 8.19 mg/ml) and purple onion (IC50 = 8.27 mg/ml).

Furthermore, all aqueous extracts showed a significant activity to scavenge 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH*) free radical and reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "a possible mechanism by which garlic, white onion, and purple onion exert antidiabetes,,, properties could be through the inhibitory effect on... α-amylase, and α-glucosidase coupled with their ability to prevent lipid peroxidation in the pancreas and heart, which justify their strong antioxidant properties".

In chemical analysis, sulfur compounds including S-methyl cysteine and flavonoids such as quercetin found in onion also are responsible for the hypoglycemic activity.

S-methyl cysteine and flavonoids found in onion not only decreased the levels of blood glucose, serum lipids, oxidative stress but also increased antioxidant enzyme activity and insulin secretion.

More importantly, in preliminarily clinical trials, patients with diabetes safely consumed slices of Allium cepa, including onion exhibited sufficient hypoglycemic activity.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Tomato Delays Lung Function Decline and Improves Lung Function, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.
Additionally, the lung also processes other abilities in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.

* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming of air embolisms.

* The airflow produced by the lungs also helps us to speak.

* The lung also protects the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

* Obstructive lung diseases are conditions in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases include asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

* Restrictive lung diseases are a condition of decreased lung capacity or volume. Diseases associated with restrictive lung diseases include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease.

* Mixed lung diseases are most common in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural and potential remedy for the improvement of lung function, researchers examined tomato intake on the relationship between lung function decline and dietary antioxidants over 10 years in adults from three European countries.

According to the questionnaire and underwent spirometry (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC)), there is an association between annual lung function decline (mL) and diet (tertiles).
In other words, tomato intake was also associated with a slower decline in FVC (4.5 mL·year-1; 95% CI 1.28, 8.02).

Compared to banana and apple intake, only tomato intake remained statistically significant after the Simes' procedure was performed

Intake of tomatoes has also been found to delay lung function decline in adults, particularly in ex-smokers.

Additionally, in patients with allergic rhinitis. associated with abnormal airway function such as an obstruction in large or small airways and increased bronchial reactivity, researchers investigated the oral administration of TE (360 mg per day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

According to the tested assays, the sneezing score significantly decreased in the TE group at the end of the trial compared to the baseline.

TE group also showed a declined tendency of rhinorrhea and nasal obstruction.

Compared to the placebo group, the TE group improved the patient's quality of life significantly after 8 weeks of treatment (P < 0.05).

In other words, TE promoted lung function by improving significantly total symptom scores, combining sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the improvement of lung function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
