Skin cancer is a chronic and medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the inner layer of the skin.
Skin is the largest organ in our body that covers the bone, inner organs, and tissues with a function to protect our body against the invasion of foreign pathogens.
Skin also plays an essential role in eliminating the toxins from our body, if the liver and kidney fail to do so.
Believe it or not, skin cancer accounts for more than half of the cancers diagnosed every year in the US.
As of today, 58 million Americans are living with skin cancer and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.
Skin cancer is caused by a number of factors. People with fair skin, a history of sunburns, excessive sun exposure, moles, precancerous skin lesions, and a family and personal history of skin cancer are found to have an increased risk of the disease.
Some researchers suggested regardless of ethnicity and skin tone, people who live in sunny or high-altitude climates are more likely to develop skin cancer compared to people who do not.
Dr. Abrar A. Qureshi, wrote, " The risk of SCC is independently affected by residence in locations with medium and high UV indices, the gradient of risk is weaker for BCC, and the risk of melanoma does not change significantly across this gradient.
And, "Geographic location and UV radiation have been implicated as risk-modifying factors for melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma,...".
Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin cancer, researchers evaluated betanin, a major compound isolated from beetroot's skin protective effect.
The study included mouse skin tumor promotion with 3430 J/m(2) of ultraviolet light-B (UV-B) was pretreated by oral administration of 0.0025% betanin.
Betanin showed a significant protective effect in the inhibition of skin damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet light-B (UV-B).
Furthermore, at the same dose, betanin also afforded significant protection in the mouse skin cancer model caused by topical application of 390 nmol of (+/-)-(E)-4-methyl-2-[(E)-hydroxyamino]-5-nitro-6-methoxy-3-hexanamide (NOR-1) in 100 microl of acetone and 1.7 nmol of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).
Based on the findings, suggest that betanin at a very low dose may be considered a regularly consumed natural product colorant and an effective cancer chemopreventive agent in vivo.
Taken together, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lichtwer Garlic Powder Containing #Alliin Suppresses the Onset of Hypercholesterolemia, According to Researchers
Kyle J. Norton
Hypercholesterolemia is a chronic condition associated with abnormally high blood cholesterol in the blood
In other words, hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein compared to low levels of high-density lipoprotein.
Low-density cholesterol also known as bad cholesterol produced by the liver or dietary saturated and trans fat in moderate amounts plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, production of steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the gastrointestinal tract in the absorption of nutrients.
However, high levels of bad cholesterol have been found to induce hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.
High-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol, on the other hand, returns the amount of excess cholesterol back to the liver for future use.
High-density lipoprotein is also produced by the liver and dietary sources found mostly in nut and fish.
The healthy ratio of LDL/HDL is any numbers less than 4.
Although there are many risk factors that cause the onset of hypercholesterolemia, some researchers suggested the introduction of a high-fat diet in North American over the past few decades may accelerate the rise of the condition.
Dr. Cole TG, the lead scientist, in a randomized controlled parallel-designed intervention study to evaluate the effects of a diet with less than 20 g carbohydrates per day (LCHF) on plasma low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in young and healthy adults wrote, "There was a significant increase in apolipoprotein B, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, free fatty acids, uric acid and urea in the LCHF group versus controls".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, researchers investigated
the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) on the serum cholesterol, and triglyceride in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.
Rats selected for the study were randomly divided into experimental rats fed with a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder for 6 weeks and control rats fed with a normal diet daily.
High cholesterol-fed animals had a significant increase in serum cholesterol compared to the control group of rats fed on a normal diet.
However, in the rat group fed with a high-cholesterol diet mixed with garlic powder, researchers found that there was a significant reduction in their serum cholesterol levels compared to other groups.
Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) also lowered the serum triglyceride levels compared to control and high cholesterol diet group rats without affecting the serum glucose and protein.
The finding clearly suggested that Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) is beneficial in reducing blood cholesterol, and the triglyceride levels in hypercholesterolemic rats.
In order to reveal more information about alliin anti-high blood cholesterol activity, researchers evaluated the capacity of Allium ursinum (wild garlic) leaf lyophilisate (WGLL; alliin content: 0.261%) to mitigate cardiovascular damage in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.
The selected New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups: (i) cholesterol-free rabbit chow (control); (ii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol (hypercholesterolemic, HC); (iii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol + 2% WGLL (hypercholesterolemic treated, HCT); for eight weeks.
During the study, WGLLtreated group showed a decrease in aortic atherosclerotic plaque coverage, plasma ApoB, a protein in atherogenic lipoprotein particles associated with heart disease associated with reduced blood cholesterol.
Furthermore, the activity of LDH and CK (creatine kinase) in plasma is also found to be lower compared to other treatment groups.
The plasma LDL was also significantly reduced in the WGLL-treated group.
Taken together, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry EXtract Procresses Anti Candida Albicans Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
The fungus is a class of primitive organisms, including mushrooms, mold, and mildew found in the air, in the soil, on plants, and in water.
Fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air if you inhale the spores, it may spread to cause fungal infection, often starting in the lungs or on the skin.
Similar to other bacteria, there are millions of different fungal species on Earth, but only about 300 are known to infect people.
Conventionally, fungal infection is treated with antibiotics, including topical antifungal ointments or oral medications, depending on the severity of the disease.
Candida is a class of yeasts that cause fungal infections worldwide.
Candida albicans is a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans do not cause harm to humans, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.
Oral candidiasis is an oral condition infected by the fungal C. albicans found mostly in people with a weakened immune system including patients who are taking the immune-suppressive medicine.
Biofilms are microbial communities in which cells stick to each other and often also to a surface.
Symptoms of oral Candida overgrowth are worse on a damp day, including persistent drowsiness, lack of coordination, headaches, mood swings, loss of balance, rashes, bad breath, dry mouth, and postnasal drip.
There are many risk factors associated with Candida overgrowth including medical conditions that cause a weakened immune system, inhalant medicine, low levels of stomach acids, and pregnancy.
Some researchers suggested aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause Candida overgrowth
Dr. Aikaterini Flevari, the lead scientist said, "Candida species remain the most important cause of opportunistic infections worldwide, affecting predominantly patients over 65 years old, while they are considered to be the fourth most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections".
And, "The rapidly growing elderly population has specific physiological characteristics, which makes it susceptible to colonization and subsequent infection due to Candida species".
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of Candida albicans, researchers examined the effects of polyphenol-rich cranberry extracts on dual-species Streptococcus mutans-Candida. albicans biofilms.
On S. mutans-C. albicans biofilms grown on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite discs (s-HA) mounted on the high-throughput Amsterdam Active Attachment model, cranberry extracts(ACE)/vehicle control was applied at the five minutes just before biofilm growth and subsequently, for similar exposure times, after 12 hours and 24 hours of biofilm growth.
Based on the analysis, the treatment of ACE at doses of 500 to 1,000 μg/mL showed significant reductions in acidogenicity and metabolic activity, compared to the control.
Biovolumes of the EPS (P=0.003) and microbial biofilm components associated with the overgrowth of Candida albicans were significantly decreased by the application of ACE.
According to the qualitative assessment of confocal biofilm images, cranberry extract disrupted biofilm structural architecture that causes Candida albicans.
Moreover, ACE showed significantly fewer S. mutans (P=0.006) and C. albicans (P=0.036) compared to control.
Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Cranberry extracts inhibited cariogenic virulence properties of S. mutans-C. albicansdual-species biofilms in an in vitro model".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of Candida albicans, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Raw #Onion and Cooked Onion in the Inhibition and Promotion of of Platelet Aggression, Accordingly, Reserchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Antiplatelet activity is an action that prevents and treats blood clots.
Platelets are tiny blood cells that protect the other to prevent injury and infection by forming clots to stop bleeding.which
Platelets are made in the bone marrow that also produces white and red blood cells.
Diseases associated with low and abnormal blood plateletsplatelets include
* Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by low blood platelet due to abnormal function of the bone marrow that makes platelets. patients with thrombocytopenia due to the low quantity of blood platelets may experience symptoms of a bruise, internal bleeding, or nosebleed.
Long-term untreated thrombocytopenia has been found to increase the risk of cancer, liver disease, pregnancy, infections, and an abnormal immune system.
* Essential thrombocythemia is a disease associated with overproducing blood platelets by the bone marrow, leading to symptoms of blood clots that form and block the blood supply to the brain or the heart.
* Secondary thrombocytosis is also another condition caused by too many platelets produced by the bone marrow.
Most cases of secondary thrombocytosis are associated with other medical conditions such as anemia. Most common symptoms of secondary thrombocytosis are infection, inflammation, some types of cancer, and reactions to medicines.
* Platelet dysfunction is a rare condition that links to poor platelet function. In other words, it is a disease caused by abnormal function of blood platelets without affecting the numbers of platelets in the blood.
This means the number of platelets is normal, but the platelets don't work as they should. Medicines such as aspirin can cause this. It's important to know which medicines affect platelets. Know that while taking these medicines you have an increased risk of bleeding.
Antiplatelet agents used in conventional medicine that process the main function to prevent platelets from clumping. However, they also exert a similar effect as of anticoagulation in the prevention of blood clots from forming and growing.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of platelet aggression against the risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the pharmacological aspect of onion antiplatelet activity in human subjects
The study included 12 human subjects who received yellow hybrid storage onions that were steamed for 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 min.
According to the tested assay, steamed onions not only destroyed the antiplatelet activity between 3 and 6 min of steaming but also stimulated platelet activity at 10 min of steaming without affecting the polyphenolic concentration and soluble solids.
Furthermore, cooked onion extracts also reverse the inhibitory effect on blood platelets by 25%, compared to steamed onion.
The findings were consistent across all donors.
The results strongly suggested that cooked onion preparations may result in the destruction or reversal of antiplatelet activity.
Moreover, in examining the anti-blood platelet activity of f2 different cooking systems of a convection oven and microwaves) in several time-temperature variables, researchers also found that
* Whole", "quarters", and "crushed" onions lost their antiplatelet activity after 30, 20, and 10 min of oven heating, respectively.
* Extensively cooked onions may stimulate platelet aggregation instead of antiplatelet aggregation.
Collectively, raw onion processed anti-antiplatelet activity compared to the cooked and extensive cooked onion in the promotion of platelet aggregation
Taken together, raw onion may be considered an antiplatelet remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Betanin Enhances the Effects of Chemotherapy and Inhibits Drug Toxicity in Cancer Treatment, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Chemotherapy is an action in which a substance including drugs was used to treat any disease, particularly, in cancer.
In cancers, chemotherapy is a treatment to kill or damage cancer cells in a specific area. Besides chemotherapy, the most common treatment of cancer in conventional medicine are surgery and radiation, depending on the severity of the condition.
The aim of chemotherapy is to cure or control the progression of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients by reducing symptoms.
In other words, chemotherapy is effective to shrink a tumor before surgery or kill the remaining cancer cells that cannot completely be removed by radiation and surgery.
Depending on the type stage and grade of cancer, treatment may be a single chemo drug or several drugs.
Chemotherapy has been found to induce serious side effects, including fatigue. hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, and constipation due to its nature to kill cells (cancer and healthy cells) indiscriminately.
Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food which enhances chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer examined the effects of betanin (BET) co-administration with the potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) in reducing the side effects.
The study included the introduction of a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) loaded with 20.5 % of DOX and 16.25of BET that overcomes the restrictions of BET and provides the synergistic effect of DOX@BET.
At adjusting, the pH of the environment, the stimulated release of DOX and BET from PGNPs showed a significant synergistic effect of DOX@BET not only inhibited the tested cancer cell line MCF-7 but also the side effect caused by DOX.
In other words, betanin enhanced chemodrug efficacy and inhibited the treatment of drug toxicity.
Based on the findings, Dr. Amjadi S, the lead scientist said, "(The synergistic effect of DOX@BET may contribute to the) developed smart nanocarrier will be a hopeful nanocarrier for cancer therapy".
In order to find out more information about the enhanced chemotherapy of researchers investigated the activity of extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA approved red food color E162 with anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin) in human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).
Individual treatment of doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner.
The cytotoxicity induced by beetroot extract at the concentration of 29 µg/ml was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin.
Beetroot extract inhibited the cancer proliferation at a trend of gradual decrease of the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.
In the additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract is attributed to the effects of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.
Based on the findings, betanin co-administration with chemo drug not only have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the anti-cancer drug but also reduce the side effect induced by conventional medicine.
Taken together, betanin used alone or combined with other chemo drugs may be considered medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bromelain Enhances the Efficacy of Cisplatin and 5-FU and Reduces Their Adverse Effects, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Bromelain may have a strong effect in enhancing the chemo drug effect for the treatment of cancer, according to studies.
Chemo drugs are a group of medication used for the treatment of cancers that have been spread to other healthy tissues and organ or reduce the size of the tumor before removing it by surgery.
Cancer is the class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the organ tissues. The originated site where the cancer starts are considered primary cancer.
Most cancers at the advanced stage can induce secondary metastasis, by traveling a distance away from the primary site to infect other healthy tissues and organs.
Conventionally, the use of chemo drugs may be effective in controlling cancer, however, the medicines also have been found to cause significant side effects, including hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea and vomiting and constipation, leading to reduce the quality of life of patients at the time of treatment.
According to the American Cancer Society, in the US, nearly 14.5 million children and adults with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2014.
Believe it or not, prostate (43%), colon and rectum (9%), and melanoma (8%) are the three most common cancers among male cancer survivors and breast (41%), uterine corpus (8%), and colon and rectum (8%) are the most common among female survivors.
Most cases of cancer can be treated successfully if diagnosed in the early stage. Some cancers such as breast cancer have a 5-year survival rate close to 100% if diagnosed at the local stage.
As of today, due to unbearable side effects in some of the cancer patients, the scientific community is in the urgency to discover plant compounds that can improve the chemo drug efficacy accompanied by reducing the adverse effect through doses reduction.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural compound which enhances the chemo drug penetration for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the antitumor properties of bromelain on hydrolyzing glycosidic linkages in faulty glycoprotein associated with cancer.
Injection of bromelain has been found to inhibit the MUC1, a glycoprotein involved in tumor cell invasion, metastasis, and chemo-resistant properties.
Additionally, bromelain enhanced the efficacy of cisplatin and 5-FU in cancer treatment by affecting the barrier function of MUC1.
Furthermore, bromelain protected the integrity and of the viability of skin cells against the onset of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) induced by expression of MUC1.
Based on the results, researchers said, "current evidence indicates that bromelain may have the potential of being developed into an effective anticancer agent for MPM".
Moreover, also in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM), treatment with various concentrations of bromelain and after 4 and 72 h showed an adverse effect on the tested cancer cell through its antitumor activity in inducing cell death by apoptosis and autophagy.
Interestingly, the combinations of bromelain and cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin or 5-FU) assessed at 72 h showed a significant effect in inducing cytotoxicity compared to the bromelain treatment group.
These results suggested that bromelain may be combined with conventional chemo drugs to enhance the anti-cancer effect and reduce the adverse effect of chemotherapy in cancer patients.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the enhancement of chemotherapy, and reduction of side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Betacyanins Inhibit Diseases Associated with the Expression of Inflammation, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system against the invasion of foreign stimuli and pathogens with the aim of protecting our body from infection.
In the acute phase of tissue damage or injury, after receiving the information from the neurotransmitters, the white blood cells that respond for the first line of defense activate the production of blood platelets and the inflammatory cytokines at the site of infection to destroy the invasive agents.
However, in most cases, the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines can damage the nearby cells leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a class of chronic conditions associated with the inflammation of the digestive tract, can be classified into
* Ulcerative colitis is found in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.
* Crohn's disease is a type of IBD that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, other than the colon and rectum.
Epidemiological studies suggested that patients with IBD are associated with the symptoms of severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. Long-term persistent symptoms such as weight loss may be life-threatening.
If you have experienced some of the symptoms as mentioned earlier, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The causes of IBD are unknown. The alternation of the ratio of gut microbiota may be the major culprit in facilitating the onset of IBD.
Dr. Becker C, the lead scientist wrote, "The intestinal microbiota has important metabolic and host-protective functions. Conversely, to these beneficial functions, the intestinal microbiota is thought to play a central role in the etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), chronic inflammation of the gut mucosa".
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
On finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of colonic inflammation, researchers examined the effects of beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra) products and their major component betanin found in betacyanins in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
According to the tested assays,
* Betanin at the concentration of 100 μM for 24 h increased DNA damage in IBD patients' neutrophils. In other words, betanin exhibited cytotoxic activity against the neutrophils isolated from the blood of patients with inflammatory bowel disease--ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), compared to those obtained in colon carcinoma-derived Caco-2 cells.
* Furthermore, betanin treatment in Caco-2 cells with H2O2 also caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks compared to untreated cells. More precisely, betanin elevated the expression of free radical H2O2 to cause cancer cell death.
* Moreover, pre-treatment with betanin was found to reduce DNA damage in healthy normal cells.
* Additionally, betanin also promoted the activity of procaspase and caspase pro-apoptotic activity to induce cancer cell apoptosis.
Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that betanin may support mechanisms that lead to the release of ROS and apoptotic cell death. In this way, betanin may exert anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity".
Taken altogether, betacyanins processed abundantly bioactive ingredient betanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver steatosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
