#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Induction of Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO), Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a condition in which the brain function is interrupted rapidly due to the loss of blood supply as a result of the blockage of blood such as thrombosis and arterial embolism, or leakage of blood causes of the death of brain cells, according to the article of Mitochondria, oxidative metabolism and cell death in stroke by Sims NR, Muyderman H (September 2009).

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention is most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.

Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow, and decreased the chance of blood clots.

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.

In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

Stroke is also the third leading cause of death. Approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of disease associated with plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS), supplementation on middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) induced mitochondrial dysfunctions in an experimental model of ischemic stroke.

According to the tested analysis, before treatment with WS, tested mice showed an ischemia-reperfusion injury, leading to the increase of the oxidative stress indicated by increased reactive oxygen species and protein carbonyl levels and low levels of antioxidant enzymes.

The untreated mice also exerted decreased antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase activity, along with a reduction in GSH levels and the redox ratio, impaired mitochondrial functions, and enhanced expression of apoptosis markers.

Ischemia-reperfusion injury in the tested mice also induced mitochondrial dysfunctions.

Moreover, the levels of pro-inflammatory and apoptotic proteins were also increased in the untreated mice. The Y maze test also indicated a significant impairment in cognitive functions in the tested animal.

However, WS pre-supplementation ameliorated all parameters associated with the induction of MCAO such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunctions, apoptosis, and cognitive impairments.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "WS pre-supplementation in ischemic stroke and are suggestive of its potential application in stroke management".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for stroke management, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#BronzeTomato in the Promotion of the Ratio of Gut Microbiota, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including the impacts of
* In nutrient metabolism, gut microbiota improves the absorption of dietary nutrients in the digestive system

* In xenobiotic and drug metabolism, gut microbiota protects the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity by facilitating the excretion.

* Maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestine in nutrient adsorption.

* In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interact with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibit the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, an imbalance in the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for enhancing the ratio of dut microbiota composition researchers examined the effect of consuming tomato products and lycopene on chronic inflammatory disorders associated with intestinal bacteria in an animal model.

The study included Winnie mice as a model of spontaneous ulcerative colitis treated with or without chow enriched with 1% Bronze tomato.

At week 2, the Bronze-enriched chow-treated group showed no macroscopic effect on the IBD symptoms.

However, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines found in the treated mice were significantly reduced, as observed by the levels of IL17A and IFNγ.

According to the analysis of the microbial composition, two weeks of Bronze enriched diet demonstrated a strong effect in the improvement of the gut microbiota ratio in the tested mice.

In additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the efficacy of Bronze tomato in the promotion of gut health was attributed to the phytochemical polyphenols presented in the tomato.

Taken together, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for gut health, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of polyphenols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Raw and Cooked Onions Process Anti- Platelet and Platelet Aggregation Activity Accordingly, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antiplatelet activity is an action that prevents and treats blood clots.
Platelets are tiny blood cells that protect the other to prevent injury and infection by forming clots to stop bleeding.

Platelets are made in the bone marrow which also produces white and red blood cells.

Diseases associated with low and abnormal blood platelets include
* Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by low blood platelets due to abnormal function of the bone marrow that makes platelets. patients with thrombocytopenia due to the low quantity of blood platelets may experience symptoms of a bruise, internal bleeding, and nosebleed.

Long-term untreated thrombocytopenia has been found to increase the risk of cancer, liver disease, pregnancy, infections, and an abnormal immune system.

* Essential thrombocythemia is a disease associated with overproducing blood platelets by the bone marrow, leading to symptoms of blood clots that form and block the blood supply to the brain or the heart.

* Secondary thrombocytosis is also another condition caused by too many platelets produced by the bone marrow.

Most cases of secondary thrombocytosis are associated with other medical conditions such as anemia. The most common symptoms of secondary thrombocytosis are infection, inflammation, some types of cancer, and reactions to medicines.

* Platelet dysfunction is a rare condition that links to poor platelet function. In other words, it is a disease caused by abnormal function of blood platelets without affecting the number of platelets in the blood.

This means the number of platelets is normal, but the platelets don't work as they should. Medicines such as aspirin can cause this. It's important to know which medicines affect platelets. Know that while taking these medicines you have an increased risk of bleeding.

Antiplatelet agents used in conventional medicine process the main function to prevent platelets from clumping. However, they also exert a similar effect as anticoagulation in the prevention of blood clots from forming and growing.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, closely related to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of platelet aggression against the risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the pharmacological aspect of onion antiplatelet activity in human subjects

The study included 12 human subjects who received yellow hybrid storage onions that were steamed for 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 min.

According to the tested assay, steamed onions not only destroyed the antiplatelet activity between 3 and 6 min of steaming but also stimulated platelet activity at 10 min of steaming without affecting the polyphenolic concentration and soluble solids.

Furthermore, cooked onion extracts also reverse the inhibitory effect on blood platelets by 25%, compared to steamed onion.

The findings were consistent across all donors.

The results strongly suggested that cooked onion preparations may result in the destruction or reversal of antiplatelet activity.

Moreover, in examining the anti-blood platelet activity of f2 different cooking systems of a convection oven and microwaves) in several time-temperature variables, researchers also found that
* Whole", "quarters", and "crushed" onions lost their antiplatelet activity after 30, 20, and 10 min of oven heating, respectively.

* Extensively cooked onions may stimulate platelet aggregation instead of antiplatelet aggregation.

Collectively, raw onion processed anti-antiplatelet activity compared to the cooked and extensive cooked onion in the promotion of platelet aggregation

Taken together, raw onion may be considered an antiplatelet remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical Allicin Processes Anti Hyper Cholesterol Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Allicin, the bioactive ingredient isolated from garlic may have a profound effect on the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects, according to studies.
Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream. In other words, the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) are high compared to the high-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood.

The ideal blood cholesterol is less than 4 (levels of LDL)/ 1(levels of HDL).

Low-density lipoprotein is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat. However, overexpression of LDL can induce plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Low-density lipoprotein is produced by the liver or from dietary sources. High-density lipoprotein neutralizes the levels of LDL by returning them to the liver.

Some researchers suggested that diets high in trans fats, saturated fat, sugar, smoking, and medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure are associated with an increased risk of high blood cholesterol.

Epidemiological studies indicated a healthy diet that contains a high amount of fruits and vegetables and whole grains has a positive on blood cholesterol. In other words, hyperlipidemia can be prevented by a healthy diet.

Dr. Heather D. Mann, in the discussion of a healthy in the risk of hyperlipidemia, said, " Dietary modification is effective in achieving and maintaining improved serum lipid levels".

The finding clearly suggested that if you follow a diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food and low in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain, you are at an increased risk of high blood cholesterol.

High blood cholesterol does not cause symptoms, the American Heart Association recommends that all adults have their cholesterol checked every 4 to 6 years, starting at age 20, the age when cholesterol levels start to go up.

In the study of the effect of allicin on hypercholesterolemia in male ICR mice, the chemical constituent of garlic showed a positive effect not only in reducing blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels, as well as lowering the hepatic cholesterol storage, but also in decreasing appetite daily.

Other in the study of the same but with rats fed with high cholesterol diet, showed a reduction of blood cholesterol, triglycerides levels, and systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic rats. These results showed that allicin may be considered a potent agent in treating hypercholesterol in the future.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, a widespread syndrome found in the Western world, researchers investigated the cholesterol-lowering properties of allicin, a bioactive compound isolated from garlic.

Hypercholesterolemia in male ICR mice selected for the study was given allicin, with doses of 5, 10, or 20 mg/kg body weight was given orally daily for 12 weeks.

After week 12, the body weights of allicin-fed mice were less than those of control mice on a high-cholesterol diet by 38.24 ± 7.94% (P < 0.0001) with 5 mg/kg allicin, 39.28 ± 5.03% (P < 0.0001) with 10 mg/kg allicin, and 41.18 ± 5.00% (P < 0.0001) with 20 mg/kg allicin, respectively.

The allicin alkaline-fed group also showed the most decrease in daily food consumption compared to control.
Furthermore, allicin showed a strong effect in reducing blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels and caused a significant decrease in lowering hepatic cholesterol storage.

These results suggested that allicin has potential value as a cholesterol-lowering candidate, and may be used for protection against the onset of atherosclerosis.

Moreover, in the evaluation of the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) on the serum cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, protein, and systolic blood pressure in rats fed with a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder for 6 weeks, and control rats were fed normal diet researchers found that* Rats fed with a high cholesterol diet mixed with garlic powder demonstrate a significant reduction in their serum cholesterol levels compared to the control group.

* Serum triglyceride levels were also significantly lowered by garlic powder when compared to control and high cholesterol diet group rats.

* The blood pressure of the high-cholesterol diet animals was significantly higher compared to the animals receiving the control diet.

* The blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder and high cholesterol diet was significantly lower as compared to the high cholesterol and control diet group.

Once again, garlic with high amounts of allicin is beneficial in reducing blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic rats.

Taken altogether, allicin on the garlic may be used daily for the prevention or treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effects

#Herbal #Bilberry's Purified Anthocyanin Inhibits and Slows Progression of #Parkinson's disease (PD), According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic and medical condition that affects the nerve cells associated with the production of dopamine in the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.
In other words, Parkinson's disease is a progressive central nervous system disorder that affects neurons in transmitting messages in controlling movement.

Some patients in the very early stage of PD may not experience any symptoms. However, Parkinson's disease symptoms gradually worsen as the condition progresses.
Researchers do not know why the neurons in the brain in some people are susceptible to gradually breaking down or dying while others do not even if they have similar health conditions and are from the same family.

However, they do know, according to the epidemiological study, that age, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals and genetic deposition are some of the risk factors found in patients with PD.

Please note that most people process some of the conditions that have never developed Parkinson's disease.

Some researchers in the examination of the dietary habits in different parts of the world suggested that people who drink caffeine found in coffee, tea, and cola are less likely to get Parkinson's disease compared to those who don't.

Dr. Prediger RD at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina wrote, "Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder affecting approximately 1% of the population older than 60 years".

And, "The available data also suggest that caffeine can improve the motor deficits of PD and that adenosine A2A receptor antagonists such as istradefylline reduces OFF time and dyskinesia associated with standard 'dopamine replacement' treatments".

The results strongly suggested if you drink caffeinated beverages, your risk of PD is decreased substantially.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient that processes neuroprotective effects against Parkinson's disease, researchers examined the Anthocyanin-rich preparations of Vaccinium species, including bilberry against the oxidative damage in dopaminergic neurons.

V. myrtillus preparation: 50% inhibition with 7 microM of total anthocyanins showed a significant neuron protection activity by inhibiting oxidation caused by the chain reaction of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The application was found to be 1.5-4 times higher than that for the other preparations or for the purified anthocyanin.

According to the analysis of the chemical constituents, the neuroprotective effects were attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds anthocyanins and total cyanidins found abundantly in bilberry, but not quercetin or myricetin.

The results suggested that the high potency of anthocyanins processes a potentially neurotoxic reaction against the onset of Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Yao Y, the lead scientist wrote, "(the findings) provide a basis for in vivo testing of these flavonoids and their physiological metabolites in the context of neuro- and mitochondrial-protective effects".

Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits Symptoms and Enhances Treatment in Patients with HIV Infection Through Its #Immunomodulatory Effects, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 is the most widespread type worldwide that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to the statistic, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

Approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches, and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

According to epidemiological studies, people who have serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,...

If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of infectious diseases, researchers examined the clinical efficacy and safety of a new polyherbal preparation, Immu-25, in HIV-infected patients.

The open-label pilot study. included 36 patients (10 female, 26 male) with a mean age of 35 +/-10 years, with confirmed HIV infection with a CD4 count <500 cells/microL, received two capsules of the test drug twice daily for 18 months.

According to the results of the study, the polyherbal preparation produced good symptomatic improvement within 6 months with an increase in mean (95% CI) weight from 58 (53-64)kg to 63 (56-69)kg, 64 (58-72)kg and 68 (62-74)kg after 6, 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

The application decreased the incidence and severity of symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, anorexia, cough, and fever in the participants.

Furthermore, there was a decrease in the mean (95% CI) viral load from 326 438 (428 600-186 420) copies/mL to 180 495 (258 300-124 000) copies/mL and 22 069 (42 100-16 000) copies/mL after 6 and 12 months of treatment, respectively.

Most importantly, the decrease in viral load was associated with an increase in mean (95% CI) CD4 count from a baseline of 243 (203-388) cells/microL to 336 (263-486) cells/microL after 6 months of therapy, and this continued to rise to 527 (285-767) cells/microL (p < 0.001) and 618 (362-1012) cells/microL (p < 0.001) after 12 and 18 months of treatment, respectively.

However, mild gastrointestinal adverse effects had been reported by some of the participants.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Herbal drug may have a good immunomodulatory effect and has potential as a co-therapeutic agent in the management of HIV infection. Further studies are warranted to confirm its therapeutic potential".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HIV infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Indicaxanthin Inhibits the Formation of Plagues that Cause #Atherosclerosis, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaque accumulated on the wall of arteries, leading to the narrowing of the artery and reducing oxygen risk blood flow to the heart and brain.
Depending on the location of the blockage, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the brain, it will cause the death of the brain cells, leading to stroke.

However, if the reduced blood flow occurred in the heart, it will cause damage to the heart tissues, leading to heart disease.

Most common disease associated with atherosclerosis is coronary artery disease. Plaques are made up of cholesterol, calcium and other chemical substances in the artery

Most people with atherosclerosis are asymptomatic at the early stage.

Some researchers suggested that atherosclerosis is a lipoprotein-driven disease. Therefore, people with high blood cholesterol are at an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Overuse of calcium supplements is also found to elevated the condition risk, particularly in the elderly.

Other risk factors that have bee found epidemiologically by studies are high blood pressure, triglycerides, smoking, insulin resistance, obesity or diabetes and inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, lupus or infections.

Most cases of atherosclerosis can be reversed by making a change of lifestyle and moderate exercise.
Dr. Singh RB, the lead scientist wrote, "Adherence to diet and exercise was obtained through questionnaires and information obtained was quantified into a formula. After 24 weeks, the overall score of diet and exercises were significantly higher in group A(intervention diet( than in group B(control). There was a significant decrease in serum total cholesterol (13.3%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (16.9%), triglycerides (19.2%), fasting blood glucose (19.5%) and blood pressures (11.5/6.2 mm Hg) in the intervention group compared with initial levels and changes in group B".

Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of betacyanins, belonging to the group of betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis, researchers at the Università di Palermo investigated the effect of phytochemical indicaxanthin (Ild) a major compound found in beetroot on human atheromas.

7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC)-induced the development of human atheromas, according to the kinetic measurements within 24 h, before injection of indicaxanthin showed the early formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species over basal levels, preceding NADPH oxidase-4 (NOX-4) over-expression and elevation of cytosolic Ca²⁺, involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. and associated with the progressive depletion of antioxidant activity of total thiols.

Furthermore, 7-KC- also induced the expression of NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines and innate and adaptive immune response.

Where 7-Ketocholesterol (7-KC) induced apoptosis of macrophages has been found to elevated the plaque progression and endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by the secretion of pro-inflammatory, procoagulant, and proteolytic molecules by macrophages.

Believe it or not, Co-incubation of 2·5 μm of indicaxanthin completely prevented 7-KC-induced pro-apoptotic events.

In other words, indicaxanthin protects the macrophage's integrity against apoptosis, thus reducing the risk of plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries in facilitating the onset of atherosclerosis.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "The effects of Ind may be ascribed to inhibition of NOX-4 basal activity and over-expression, inhibition of NF-κB activation, maintaining cell redox balance and Ca homeostasis, with the prevention of mitochondrial damage and consequently apoptosis".

Taken together, phytochemical indicaxanthin (Ild) found in beetroot may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of indicaxanthin (Ild) in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
