Cancer is a class of chronic diseases caused by cell growth and multiplies disorderedly and uncontrollably in the body.
Depending on the types and grades of cancer, some cancers can be progressively worse and damageddamage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancers can spread to other tissues and organs in the body via lymph or blood.
Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process. Every day millions of cells grow to replace millions of dead cells and to keep our body in balance and healthy.
Sometimes, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cut, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again.
In other words, cell growth or cell division limit to a number of cycles due to our body growth inhibitors, before replacing by the new cells.
In cancer cells, the cycle of cell growth can be indefinite.
Depending on the type of cells that initiates cancer, cancers can be classified into
* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures and glands. Although the forming of the malignant tumor in the epithelium is still unknown, it possesses and associates the characteristics of epithelial cells, including those of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.
* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells that originated from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.
* Lymphoma and leukemia:
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of blood cell, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets become cancerous.
* Germ cell tumor
Cancer is derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary but are more common in babies and young children.
* Blastoma
Cancer is derived from immature "precursor" or embryonic tissue. These are also commonest in children.
According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, approximately 38.4% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. In 2017, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 were diagnosed with cancer, and 1,790 died of the disease.
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, researchers examined the soluble natural food colors betacyanins and anthocyanins isolated from Beta vulgaris.
Based on the results of these natural pigments, alone and in combination, evaluated for their relative potencies using MCF-7 (breast), HCT-116 (colon), AGS (stomach), CNS (central nervous system), and NCI-H460 (lung) tumor cell lines, betacyanins, and anthocyanins showed a significant effect in the inhibition of enzyme COX-2 associated with the promotion of tumor growth and suppression of tumor apoptosis.
Furthermore, the COX-1 associated with the promotion of overexpression of the enzyme in prostaglandin biosynthesis in tumor onset and progression isalso inhibited by the administration of betacyanins and anthocyanins.
Moreover, betacyanins showed a dose-dependent growth inhibition against breast, colon, stomach, central nervous system, and lung tumor cells.
Interestingly, in the chemical analysis, researchers found that the combination exerted the synergistic effects and chemical interactions at various concentrations against tested cancer cell lines.
Finally, Only the mixture of anthocyanin and betanin negated their efficacy in the cell growth inhibitory assay and did not enhance the COX enzyme inhibitory activity.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This is the first report of a comparative evaluation and the impact on biological activities of these pigments alone and in combination".
Taken together, betacyanins used alone or combined with other herbal remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#CrudeHoney inhibits the Onset of #Dandruff, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Honey may have a potential effect on the prevention and treatment of dandruff, a common skin problem of many adults, some scientists suggested
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp most commonly caused by dry skin resulting from dry air.
However, in many instances, the condition also is associated with seborrheic dermatitis. leading to rough, scaly skin on the scalp.
In other words, patients with oily skin accompanied by seborrheic dermatitis can experience overexpression of yeast that causes the development of large white flakes or yellow scales due to uneven shedding and clumping of dead skin cells.
Belief or not dandruff affects over 50% of the general population.
There are many causes of dandruff. Researchers suggested that dry skin, the use of the wrong kinds of hair products, and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or eczema are associated with the onset of dandruff.
In some people, an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus can also cause dandruff.
The increase in age hormone imbalance and prolonged periods of stress are the most common prevalent risk factors associated with the condition.
Most cases of dandruff can be treated with daily shampoo to reduce the oil on the scalp. In severe cases, due to overexpression of fungi, pyrithione zinc shampoos may be recommended.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.
Dandruff, if left untreated can cause itchy and inflamed scalp that lead to temporary hair loss.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dandruff with no side effects, researchers examine the anti-dandruff effects from honey, a bee-derived, supersaturated solution composed mainly of fructose and glucose, and contains proteins and amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and other minor components.
The application of honey exerted a significant effect in reducing dandruff, through its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties.
The effective doses range between 1 and 10%, but concentrations up to 70% can be reached by mixing with oils, gel, emulsifiers, or polymer entrapment.
With an aim to reaffirm the honey anti-dandruff activity, a researcher at the Dubai Specialised Medical Centre and Medical Research Labs, investigated the potential use of topical application of crude honey in the management of seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
The study included 30 patients (20 patients were males and 10 were females, their ages ranged between 15 and 60 years) with chronic seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, face, and front of the chest.
Before applying honey to treat the condition, participants showed conditions of scaling, itching, and hair loss. The lesions were scaling macules, papules, and dry white plaques with crust and fissures.
All patients were asked to apply diluted crude honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) every other day on the lesions with gentle rubbing for 2-3 mins. And, honey was left for 3 hr before gentle rinsing with warm water.
After 4 weeks of treatment, honey showed a significant effect on the prophylactic phase, which lasted for six months.
Furthermore, half of the patients were treated with the topical honey once weekly and the other half served as control.
The treatment group demonstrated a reduction of Itching and disappeared scaling within one week. Skin lesions were healed and disappeared completely within 2 weeks.
Moreover, honey administration also improved hair loss.
None of the patients treated with the honey application once weekly experienced a relapse for six months
Dr. Al-Waili NS, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Crude honey could markedly improve seborrheic dermatitis and associated hair loss and prevent relapse when applied weekly".
The findings clearly suggested that honey may be considered a replacement of chemical ingredients for the prevention and treatment of dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis, with no side effects.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha #Extract Protects the Neuron Against the Onset of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, through Its Antioxidant Activity, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a type of dementia that causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles.
Dementia is a condition of neurodegeneration syndrome among elders, affecting memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgment. Over 47 million of the worldwide population are affected by the disease, mostly in the West.
Free radicals have been found to induce Lou Gehrig's disease. Researchers found that glutamate in the synapses enhances the production of free radicals(77) only in motor nerve cells but also in sparing other nerve cells. such as cells controlling senses and other body functions, causing disruption of astrocytes in regulated glutamate levels.
Maintaining a balanced ratio of antioxidants and free radicals is essential for our body to perform daily physiological functions properly.
Truly, if our body is overwhelmed by overexpression of free radicals, it will be weakened by oxidative stress, causing adversely altered lipids, proteins, and DNA that can trigger a number of human diseases(a), including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain at least an unpaired electron with function as oxidants or reductants by donating an electron to or accepting an electron from other molecules to exhibit chain and domino effects.
The most common oxygen-containing free radicals found epidemiologically in induced chronic diseases include hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radicals.
Antioxidants have been found to reduce the risk of Lou Gehrig's disease by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals, including
* Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)
High doses of vitamin B12 as an antioxidant have been shown to improve or slow muscle wasting in the later stages of patients with ALS disease(78)(79).
* Vitamin E
Vitamin E protects against cell membranes from lipid peroxidation damage(80) in reducing the risk of breakdown of the cell membrane caused by ALS(81).
* Superoxide dismutase enzyme
Mutations in the superoxide dismutase enzyme can increase the risk of ALS(82) in catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide(83).
* Cerebral cortex
Oxidative stress and DNA alternation-triggered neuron damage(84) were found in elevated levels in mice with ALS(85).
* Amino acids
A diet high in amino acids as antioxidants has shown some promising effects in treating ALS(86)(87).
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the treatment of neurological diseases, researchers examined the protective effects of Withania somnifera extract in the SOD1G93A mouse model with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
According to the tested analysis, the administration of WS extracts by gavage to mice expressing the G93A mutant form of antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD1) found in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse increased longevity, improved motor performance, and increased number of motor neurons in the lumbar spinal cord.
In other words, WS extracts inhibited the expression of mutated SOD1 by increasing the cellular chaperones with conformational folding functions.
Furthermore, proteins associated with the induction of pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptosis are also reduced by the injection of WS, through the extracts' immunomodulatory activity.
Moreover, WS extract also induced autophagy at the early stages of the disease, by cleaning out the damaged cells.
Based on the findings, researchers said," WS extracts might constitute promising therapeutics for the treatment of ALS with the involvement of misfolded SOD1".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Artichoke Combined #Fishoil Are Asscoiated with a Reduced Risk of #LiverCancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Artichokes may have potential and positive effects in protecting the liver against the onset of liver diseases, according to studies.
The liver is the large organ in the human body that processes a significant activity in filtering the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.
Furthermore, the function of the liver also includes removing and breaking down most drugs and chemicals from your bloodstream and toxins created byproducts that can damage the liver and the body.
However, long-term and persistent exposure to toxic substances can cause serious damage, sometimes irreversible harm to the liver.
Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of liver cell DNA.
The most common metastasis of primary liver cancer is breast, colorectal cancer, and esophageal cancer.
Most cases of primary liver cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the liver tissues. Due to the small size of the tumor at the early stage, most patients with liver cancer do not experience any symptoms.
Genetic preposition, hepatitis viral infection, alcohol abuse, and cirrhosis are common risk factors associated with the onset of liver cancer.
According to the statistics, 43% of people who are diagnosed at an early stage have a 5-year survival rate of 31% compared to that of 3 to 5% at the advanced stage.
In the Western world, more than half of all people diagnosed with primary liver cancer have cirrhosis, a scarring condition of the liver commonly caused by alcohol abuse.
Dr.Elliot B Tapper, in the investigation of the alcoholic risk of liver cancer mortality in the US, said, "Mortality due to cirrhosis has been increasing in the US since 2009. Driven by deaths due to alcoholic cirrhosis, people aged 25-34 have experienced the greatest relative increase in mortality. White Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans experienced the greatest increase in deaths from cirrhosis".
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of liver cancer with no side effects evaluated the effect of fish oil and Artichoke (Cynara scolymus I.) against diethylnitrosamine (DEN) induced hepatocellular carcinoma in rats.
Rats selected for the study were divided into 8 groups. Group 1, control rats. Group 2: rats injected with a single dose of DEN (100 mg/kg body weight). Groups 3-8 were supplemented with different concentrations of either fish oil or artichoke for 25 days before DEN injection.
DEN injected group not only showed a significant decrease in levels fo antioxidant enzymes produced by the host but also exhibited the overexpression of free radical formation and oxidative stress marker.
Furthermore, the Den injected group also showed increased inflammatory cytokines and stimulated protein associated with forming new blood vessels for cancer growth accompanied by liver damage through the expression of liver function markers.
Moreover, the administration of DEN also affected the liver cell through the occurrence of hepatic cellular degeneration and necrosis.
Treatment with fish oil (5%, 10%) or artichoke heads or leaves (0.5, 1 g) for 25 days displayed a significant amelioration of DEN-induced changes in the biochemical parameters.
In the depth analysis, the administration of fish oil (5%, 10%) or artichoke heads or leaves (0.5, 1 g) fish oil (5%, 10%) or artichoke heads or leaves (0.5, 1 g) almost restored the liver functioning in treated groups, compared to the controls.
Dr. Metwally NS and colleagues in the final report wrote, "The results pointed out that 10% fish oil and 1 g% leaves of artichoke succeeded to protect from hepatocellular carcinoma to a certain degree. In addition, they may be considered as protective foods against angiogenesis".
In order to reveal more information about the artichoke anti-liver cancer activity, researchers examined the polyphenolic extracts from an edible part of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) on cultured rat hepatocytes and on human hepatoma cells.
On hepatocytes exposed to H2O2 generated in situ by glucose oxidase, injection of AE not only restored the levels of antioxidant enzymes from the host but also decreased the oxidative stress marker in the liver.
In other words, AE protected the liver against lipid peroxidation and cell death and prevented the loss of total GSH and the accumulation of MDA.
Additionally, AE also reduced cell viability in a dose-dependent manner in HepG2 cells in 24 h.
In liver cancer cell lines, AE induced liver protective activity by activating the proteins associated with cell apoptosis, according to the flow cytometric analysis of annexin.
Dr. Miccadei S, the lead scientist said, "AE had a marked antioxidative potential that protects hepatocytes from oxidative stress. Furthermore, AE reduced cell viability and had an apoptotic activity on a human liver cancer cell line".
Taken together, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Reverses the Slow Gastric Emptying and Intestinal Transit in the Treatment of Chronic Constipation, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Constipation is a condition of hard and dry stool that are infrequent or hard to pass.
Acute constipation caused by staying in a sitting position for long periods of time that kinks up the colon and restrain stool from passing through can be reversed in a few days with or without the use of
a laxative or over the counter medicine
Chronic constipation is a condition characterized by difficult, infrequent, or perceived incomplete evacuation of bowel movements with less than 3 bowel movement a week.
In most cases, chronic constipation with no structural and medical problems is normally caused by a long-term unhealthy diet with low fiber.
Certain medications calcium channel blockers, narcotics are also found to induce constipation.
According to the recommendation of health professionals, total fiber intake per day is 25-35 grams, depending on your sex, age, and weight for people with or without the condition of constipation.
Some people taking total fiber intake per day is 25-35 grams may experience symptoms of excess colon gas and flatus. In this instance, soluble fiber should be cut down on first before cutting down of insoluble fiber.
More precisely, a high-fiber diet must be accompanied by increased fluid intake and moderate exercise for maintaining good colon health against constipation in patients with no structural or medical problems.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 4 million people have frequent constipation, affecting about 2 percent of Americans. Constipation also is the most common digestive complaint in the US, outnumbering all other chronic digestive conditions.
Some researchers suggested that there is a correlation between aging in the risk of constipation.
Dr. Brenda G. Schuster wrote, "Constipation is a common complaint and challenge for older adults. The prevalence of constipation increases with age and differs among settings. In individuals 65 years of age or older in the community, the prevalence is 26% for women and 16% for men.1
"This rate increases to 34% for women and 26% for men in those 84 years of age and older.1For long-term care residents, the prevalence is as high as 80%".
In other words, adults who are 65 years of age are at a higher risk of constipation.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In finding a natural laxative compound for the treatment of chronic constipation, researchers examined the effect of bromelain (EC 3.4.22.33) isolated and purified from pineapple fruit on constipation.
In rat constipation induced gavage administration of loperamide hydrochloride treated by bromelain, showed significant relief of the high visceral sensitivity and infrequent stools in constipated rats.
Furthermore, bromelain-treated rats also reversed the slow gastric emptying and intestinal transit.
Moreover, bromelain relieved constipation in tested rats by stimulating intestinal contraction
The efficacy of anti-constipation of bromelain was attributed to significantly reverse the decrease of phosphorylation of the 20 kDa regulatory light chain of myosin (p-MLC20) associated with cellular functions such as muscle contraction, mitosis, and cytokinesis. and the expression of MLCK associated with gastro emptying and intestinal transit in constipation-predominant.
In other words, bromelain efficacy on constipation is to promote mechanisms involved in increased gut motility.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The beneficial effect of pineapple on constipation is partly dependent on fruit bromelain although the fibers and fluid in pineapple juice are also beneficial".
Taken together, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic constipation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Dithiolthiones Processes the Similar Effects as those of Drug #Anisyldithiolthione (ADT) in Liver Protective Activity
Kyle J. Norton
Dithiolthiones, a bioactive plant-based compound found in many vegetables may have a strong implication in reducing the risk and treatment of liver diseases, some studies suggested.
Liver protection is an action, including the use of substances to protect the liver function against damage or injury.
There are many causes of liver diseases associated with a variety of factors including; viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes.
However, one of the major cause of liver diseases are toxins accumulation. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the expression of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.
And, long-term excessive alcohol drinking is generally known to cause the onset of alcoholic liver disease, the very early stage of liver cancer.
A study in the Brazil population to differentiate the risk of liver diseases in a total of 57,380 DALYs (30.3 per 100,000 inhabitants) attributable to chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, with 41,262 DALYs in men showed, "Chronic viral hepatitis and liver cirrhosis are responsible for a significant burden in Brazil, affecting mainly men and individuals still in their productive years. The most burden is related to non-viral causes of cirrhosis, with a major contribution of alcohol".
Disability-adjusted life year (DALY) is the sum of years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL) and years lived with disability (YLD).
Liver toxins accumulate over the years of an unhealthy diet with much saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods, and fewer fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Mirmiran P, reaffirming the general belief, an unhealthy diet plays a key role in the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) said, "Intakes of red meat, fats, and sweets were high whereas consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables were less in NAFLD patients. Moreover, there was a positive association between the Western dietary pattern and the risk of NAFLD, while adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis".
These results suggested that by changing the diet pattern by increasing the intake more in fruits vegetable and whole grain and reducing intake of the saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods accompanied by a healthy lifestyle, the risk of liver diseases are decreased substantially.
Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.
The effect of the drug anisyldithiolthione (ADT) was attributed to its major compound dithiolthiones, therefore application dithiolthiones directly may have a similar effect as of the drug anisyldithiolthione (ADT).
* Dithiolthiones inhibited the lipid peroxidation induced in rat liver microsomes either chemically by FeSO4 and reducing agents (cysteine or ascorbate)
* Dithiolthiones m also has a potency similar to those of propyl gallate and toxicity caused by the ethane exhalation by rats treated by CCI4 (ID50 approximately 5mg per kg).
The result suggested dithiolthiones exerted a potency in protecting the liver against toxic chemical injection and lipid peroxidation.
Futhermore, anisydithiolthione (ADT), when given orally 1 hour prior to acetaminophen (AAP) (450 mg/kg intraperitoneally) in Swiss female mice, also exhibited a hepatoprotective potency at doses as low as 10 mg/kg relative to serum aminotransferase activities and hepatic glutathione-related enzyme system (glutathione reductase, peroxidase, transferase).
These results indicated, dithiolthiones also protect the liver from oxidative stress by stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes in the tested mice.
Taken together, dithiolthiones may be considered a functional supplement for the protection of the liver against substances and pathogens that cause liver diseases and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of liver diseases.

#Arbutin Found in #Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Combined with Conventional Medicine Inhibit Pathways Associated with a Reduced Risk of #BladderCancer, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential in the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, some scientists suggested.
Bladder cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the tissue of the bladder.
Most bladder cancer starts first on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the bladder. As the cancer progresses to the advanced stage, the malignant cells can infect other healthy tissue through the circulation of blood and fluid.
Bladder cancer that spreads to other parts of the body is known as metastatic bladder cancer.
According to the statistic, every year, approximately, over 80,000 adults, including 62,380 men and 18,810 women in the United States are diagnosed with bladder cancer, causing the deaths of 12,520 men and 4,720 women.
The 5-year relative survival rate of all stages of bladder cancer is about 77%. However, the 5-year relative survival rate for people diagnosed with stage 0 of bladder cancer is about 98%,
The statistics strongly suggest, that if bladder cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, it is treatable.
The exact causes of bladder cancer are unknown. However, the age of 50 and over, men, smoking, and long-term exposure to harmful chemicals are associated with an increased risk of the disease,
Some researchers suggested certain medical conditions such as diabetes, previous treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and early menopause are also some of the prevalent risk factors that may increase the early onset of bladder cancer.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
The Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.
In the reaffirm of traditional medicine use of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi for the treatment of various types of cancer, researchers at the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine launched an investigation to examine the effects of Arbutin, a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos species) on TCCSUP human bladder carcinoma cell.
At the dose at concentrations of < 500 microg/ml, Arbutin did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects in TCCSUP cells.
In different concentrations that are higher than 500microg/ml, Arbutin significantly decreased TCCSUP cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner.
According to the cell cycle analysis, arbutin strongly disrupted the cell cycle in a time-dependent manner.
Furthermore, arbutin led to the inactivation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which is known to critically regulate cell proliferation.
The in-depth analysis also found that arbutin markedly increases the expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1)which is considered a key mediator of p53-dependent cell cycle arrest.
Where p53, also known as TP53, is a protein that processes a function in regulating the cell cycle division and hence functions as a tumor suppression.
Dr. Li H, the lead author, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Arbutin inhibits TCCSUP cell proliferation via ERK inactivation and p21 up-regulation".
Abnormal activation of ERK was found in human cancer due to DNA mutation. The combination of ERK pathway inhibitors (cytostatic agents) and conventional anticancer drugs (cytotoxic agents) is an excellent basis for scientists to develop new chemotherapeutic strategies against cancer.
Taken altogether, herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi containing a high volume of Arbutin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer,
However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi anti-bladder cancer possibilities.

(1) Arbutin inhibits TCCSUP human bladder cancer cell proliferation via up-regulation of p21 By Li H, Jeong YM, Kim SY, Kim MK, Kim DS.(PubMed)
