#Carotenoids Inhibit the Risk of High Grade #ProstateCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The prostate warped around the urethra is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the prostate gland. Most cases of prostate cancer are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.

Most cases of prostate cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to induce colonization.

At the advanced stage, the prostate cancer cells can spread to the distant parts of the body, leading to secondary metastasis.

Prostate cancer can be diagnosed by* Blood tests
* Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)
In DRE, your doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel the surface of the prostate gland to check for any abnormality of the prostate.

* Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)
Ultrasound allows your doctor to visualize and assess the size of your prostate and to check for any abnormality and surrounding area with an image taken from the test. In transrectal ultrasound, a probe is inserted into the rectum to emit ultrasonic impulses against the prostate.

* Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
The test is to measure the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate. The high levels of PSA may be an indication of a higher risk of the presence of prostate cancer.

* Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP) test
Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a test to measure the level of prostatic acid phosphatase, an enzyme produced by the prostate. The higher the levels of PAP is an indication of the disease progression.

* Prostate biopsy
In a prostate biopsy, samples of the prostate are taken by a thin, tube-like instrument to examine under microscopy to review the stage of cancer.

According to the statistics, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men particularly older than 65, after skin cancer. in 2019, approximately 174,650 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The average age of diagnosis is 66.

Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, researchers examined the effect of carotenoid levels on the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

The study included the measurement of plasma levels of carotenoids and genotyped 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in SOD1, SOD2, SOD3, XRCC1, and OGG1 in 559 men with non-metastatic prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy.
According to the results from tested assays, the serum of circulated carotenoid levels was inversely associated with the risk of high-grade prostate cancer, with odds ratios (OR) of 0.34 compared to the highest versus lowest quartiles.

In chemical analysis, the relative odds ratio of α-carotene,β-carotene, lycopene, and total carotenoids.was 0.31, .55, 34, and 0.37 respectively.

In other words, all major phytochemicals found in carotenoid work synergistically to enhance the efficacy of carotenoid against the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.

Furthermore, the presence of the SNPs rs25489 in XRCC1, rs699473 in SOD3 and rs1052133 in OGG1 genotypes also was found to modify the activity of α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene, respectively.

Believe it or not, the high serum of lycopene was found among men with Gleason score ≤ 3 + 4 and lower FGA (P = 0.04).

More precisely, the efficacy of carotenoids reduced the risk of prostate cancer, however, the risk of high-grade invasive prostate cancer are depending on the levels of lycopene.

Dr. Nordström T, the lead scientist said, "Higher lycopene level was associated with less genomic instability among men with the low-grade disease which is novel and supports the hypothesis that lycopene may inhibit the progression of prostate cancer early in its natural history".

Taken together, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #DiallylSulfide (DAS) Inhibits the Proliferation of #Osteosarcoma, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemical allicin isolated from garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of osteosarcoma with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Osteosarcoma is a bone cancer found mostly in teenagers and people over age 60.

Most cases of osteosarcoma are associated with genetic syndromes. In other words, the disease is the result of the conditions associated with inherited mutated genes from the parent.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle such as body weight, physical activity, diet, tobacco, gender, age, height, ethnicity, and exposure to bone radiation also play a major role in many adult cancers.

According to the statistics, in the US, osteosarcoma is rare and approximately 900 new cases of osteosarcoma are reported each year. and children and teens younger than 20 account for half of the numbers.

Dr. James J. Morrow, the lead scientist in the study of the genetic risk of osteosarcoma wrote, "Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of bone, typically presenting in the first or second decade of life"

And, " Increased risk of osteosarcoma is associated with a number of well-defined genetic syndromes: hereditary retinoblastoma (germline mutation of the Rb gene), Li-Fraumeni syndrome (germline mutation of the p53 gene), Bloom syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL2 gene), Werner syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL3 gene), and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL4 gene)"

These results strongly suggested that young teenagers with genetic syndrome are more likely to be infected by the disease, compared to others.

Allicin is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of osteosarcoma with no side effects, researchers at the Wenling City Chinese Medicine Hospital looked into the anti-osteosarcoma activity of the main biologically active compound derived from garlic.

The combined treatment significantly suppressed the invasion, motility, and colony formation ability and activated the protein associated with a pro-apoptotic activity, compared to the lone treatment group.

Furthermore, in vivo. artesunate and allicin also inhibited tumor growth and cell proliferation

Dr.Jiang W, the lead scientist said, "Artesunate and allicin in combination exert synergistic effects on osteosarcoma cell proliferation and apoptosis".

Moreover, in examining the effects of diallyl sulfide (DAS) derived from allicin in vitro and in vivo on the proliferation of human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells, researchers found that in vivo, the nude mice MG-63 cells tumor-bearing model after twenty-one days of treatment with DAS inhibit proliferation of MG-63 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner.

DSA groups (different concentrations) showed significantly reduced expression levels of VEGF mRNA, associated with stimulating the formation of blood vessels. compared with those in the control group.

At the dose of 20 and 40 μg/mL, cell migration was significantly lower in the DAS groups (91.4±8.3 and 81.8±7.4, respectively) compared to the control group (150.4±14.7, both).

Also at the dose of 20 and 40 μg/mL, DAS also decreased the microvessel density (MVD) of MG-63 tumor-bearing tissue.

Taken together, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of osteosarcoma.

However, intake of allicin as a form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose toxicity

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits Proteins Associated with the Risk of #PancreaticCancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA. Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ.

However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessels, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Pancreatic cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.

In the early stage, pancreatic cancer starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of pancreatic tissue. At the advanced stage, cancerous cells of the pancreas can travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissues and organs.

The exact causes of the alternation of DNA of pancreatic cells are unknown. However, epidemiological studies suggested that genetic preposition and acquired gene mutations are associated with the increased incidence of cancer.

Some researchers suggested long-term use of tobacco, being overweight and obese, exposure to workplace chemicals, age, gender, and family history are some prevalent risk factors for pancreatic cancer.

According to the statistics, pancreatic cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men. Pancreatic cancer accounts for 7% of all cancer deaths.

The 5 years survival rate at stages 1 and 2 is 61% and 52% respectively.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the withaferin-A (WA), the biologically active withanolide extracted from Withania somnifera in human pancreatic cancer cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extract significantly increased the cells' spherical structure with double-layer membranes degraded by autophagy through cleaning out damaged cells in normal cells.

However, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, withanolide extract also blocked the degradation of autophagy by inhibiting SNARE protein in the the-mediated fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes which contains degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.

In other words, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, the extract promotes the cancer cell degradation by autophagy to induce apoptosis.

More precisely, WA induced ER stress-mediated apoptosis. by promoting the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins, associated with degradation via the proteasome, a protein involved in degrading unneeded or damaged proteins.

In vivo, combining WA with a series of ER stress aggravators enhanced apoptosis synergistically in tumor growth in PC xenografts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "simultaneous suppression of 2 key intracellular protein degradation systems rendered PC cells vulnerable to ER stress, which may represent an avenue for new therapeutic combinations for this disease".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

#Phytochemical #Isothiocyanates Inhibit Cell Viability of Human Cancers, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

Isothiocyanates and cancers
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying in disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

In a case-control study conducted in urban Shanghai (from December 2006 to December 2008), ITC consumption from cruciferous vegetables showed a positive effect in reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer after adjusting for possible confounding factors such as age, sex, history of diabetes, and pancreatitis(1). Thiazolo, the synthesis of a novel class of quinazoline, produced by the reaction of 4,6-dichloro-5-aminopyrimidine with isothiocyanates in the presence of 20 mol% KF/alumina, exhibited antiproliferative activity in the lung (NCI-H322 and A549), epidermal (A431) and glioblastoma (T98G), HL-60 cell lines at 20 μM. The effect of compound 4a on mitochondrial potential loss in HL-60 cells is probably through cleavage of PARP-1 and procaspase-3 inhibition(2).

The study by Campus Morro do Cruzeiro suggested that the phytochemicals inhibited the cell viability of human cervical cancer cells, human pancreatic cancer cells, human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and human ovarian cancer cells, and have anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of human T-cell leukemia cells(3).

#Greentea Extract Show a Strong Effect on External Anogenital Warts Topically, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Topical green tea extract may have a significant potency for the treatment of External Anogenital Wartsis, a renowned institute study suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Stephen (Kora Corporation Ltd), is a herbal medicinal topical formulated product isolated from green tea, approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) inhibited the progression and cured external genital and perianal warts with 0.1g of green tea extract per gram (10%).

According to the University of Toronto, Sinecatechins ointment with 10% green tea extract also promotes the quality of life and sexual well-being by healing the external genital warts (EGWs) induced by the human papillomavirus (HPV) cause of common sexually transmitted infection.

Dr. Gupta AK, the lead author said, " (The) phase III trials of sinecatechins 10% ointment have demonstrated higher efficacy and lower recurrence rates compared to currently available patient-applied treatments".

A randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial involved 502 male and female patients aged 18 years and older, with 2-30 anogenital warts ranging from 12 to 600 mm(2) total wart area with topical application of sinecatechins ointment 15% or 10%, three times daily for a maximum of 16 weeks or until complete clearance of all warts or placebo, group treated with sinecatechins ointment at the end showed partial clearance rates of at least of 78.4% and 74.0% compared with 51.5% in placebo, in the week 4 and 6.

The study also found that the sinecatechins ointment group also reduced the recurrence rate of 6.5% to 8.3%, and developed new warts compared to 8.8% in the placebo group.

Furthermore, the application of Sinecatechins ointment with 10% and 15% green tea extract showed a well-tolerated mild or moderate adverse effect in all patients.

Truly, there is no doubt that the green tea process has a potential value for the treatment of external genital warts (EGWs) through the efficacy of phytochemical catechin in induced apoptosis of micro bacterial expression.

#Cooking of #CruciferousVegetables Have a Major Influence on the Yield, Chemical Structure, and Bioavailability of Antioxidants, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibit the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or taken from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

On the other hand, free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a natural antioxidant in whole food, researchers examined the antioxidant activities of some Brassica vegetables.

According to the dietary information,
* The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables were found to be influenced by antioxidant breakdown and leaching during cooking, particularly in heat cooking.

* Brassica vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables, perceived minor antioxidant ability in processed vegetables compared to uncooked samples.

* Food processing operations in terms of blanching, canning, sterilizing, and freezing have a strong effect on the antioxidant capacity.

In other words, cooking methods perhaps can have a major influence on the yield, chemical structure, and bioavailability of antioxidants in the Brassica family.

More precisely, the consumption of raw or slightly blanched veggies is an appropriate way to maximize its health benefits.

#Honey not Only Prevents Liver Lead Toxicity but Also Ameliorates Lead-Induced Anemia., According to Scientists

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is a large organ in the human body that processes a number of functions, including producing bile to aid digestion, detoxifying metabolites, synthesizing proteins, and filtering blood from the digestive tract before passing them to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of liver toxicity include gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Some patients with liver toxicity also experience the symptoms of right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor immediately. Acute liver toxicity may be life-threatening.

The most common causes of liver toxicity in the Western world are excessive alcohol drinking long-term use of certain medications and overdoses of herbal supplements.

Dr. Victor Navarro, M.D. in the examination of the herbal and dietary supplements at risk liver toxicity wrote, "Herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) -induced liver injury now accounts for 20% of cases of hepatotoxicity in the United States based on research data".

And, "The major implicated agents include anabolic steroids, green tea extract, and multi-ingredient nutritional supplements (MINS)".

The results strongly suggested if you are currently using some of the herbal and dietary supplements, please make sure that you follow the directions and guidelines set out in the products to prevent unnecessary live toxicity.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding the natural and potential ingredient for the prevention of liver toxicity, researchers investigated the honey's protective effect against toxic materials.

The study included 24 male rabbits allocated into four groups six rabbits each given daily during 24 days of experimentation; group 1: the control group, received distilled water (0.1 ml / kg.b.wt /daily); group 2: received oral lead acetate (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily); group 3: treated with oral honey (1g /kg.b.wt/daily) and oral lead (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily), and group 4: received oral honey (1 g/kg.b.wt/daily).

Injection of the lead group induced hepatic injury and caused anemia during three weeks of the exposure.

Treatment with honey in the lead group not only prevented liver lead toxicity but also ameliorated lead-induced anemia.

The results clearly suggested that honey has a protective effect against lead-induced blood, hepatic, and toxic effects.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about honey liver protective activity, researchers examined the Manuka and Talh honey against cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity in a rat model.

Before the injection of Manuka and Talh honey, rats treated with CISP-induced liver dysfunction observed liver toxicity.

Administration of Manuka honey prevented CISP-induced histopathological changes observed in the rat liver but not in the kidney.

Manuka and Talh honey also reduced oxidative stress in the liver by stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes from the treated rats.

In other words, both honeys inhibited the expression of proinflammatory cytokines including COX-2 and NF-κB by the cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity.

Taken together, honey, particularly Manuka and Talh honey may be considered function remedies for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
