#Phytochemical #Isothiocyanates Inhibit Cell Viability of Human Cancers, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

Isothiocyanates and cancers
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying in disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, have become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

In a case-control study conducted in urban Shanghai (from December 2006 to December 2008), ITC consumption from cruciferous vegetables showed a positive effect in reducing the risk of pancreatic cancer after adjusting for possible confounding factors such as age, sex, history of diabetes, and pancreatitis(1). Thiazolo, the synthesis of a novel class of quinazoline, produced by the reaction of 4,6-dichloro-5-aminopyrimidine with isothiocyanates in the presence of 20 mol% KF/alumina, exhibited antiproliferative activity in the lung (NCI-H322 and A549), epidermal (A431) and glioblastoma (T98G), HL-60 cell lines at 20 μM. The effect of compound 4a on mitochondrial potential loss in HL-60 cells is probably through cleavage of PARP-1 and procaspase-3 inhibition(2).

The study by Campus Morro do Cruzeiro suggested that the phytochemicals inhibited the cell viability of human cervical cancer cells, human pancreatic cancer cells, human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and human ovarian cancer cells, and have anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of human T-cell leukemia cells(3).

#Greentea Extract Show a Strong Effect on External Anogenital Warts Topically, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Topical green tea extract may have a significant potency for the treatment of External Anogenital Wartsis, a renowned institute study suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful cases of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Stephen (Kora Corporation Ltd), is a herbal medicinal topical formulated product isolated from green tea, approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) inhibited the progression and cured external genital and perianal warts with 0.1g of green tea extract per gram (10%).

According to the University of Toronto, Sinecatechins ointment with 10% green tea extract also promotes the quality of life and sexual well-being by healing the external genital warts (EGWs) induced by the human papillomavirus (HPV) cause of common sexually transmitted infection.

Dr. Gupta AK, the lead author said, " (The) phase III trials of sinecatechins 10% ointment have demonstrated higher efficacy and lower recurrence rates compared to currently available patient-applied treatments".

A randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial involved 502 male and female patients aged 18 years and older, with 2-30 anogenital warts ranging from 12 to 600 mm(2) total wart area with topical application of sinecatechins ointment 15% or 10%, three times daily for a maximum of 16 weeks or until complete clearance of all warts or placebo, group treated with sinecatechins ointment at the end showed partial clearance rates of at least of 78.4% and 74.0% compared with 51.5% in placebo, in the week 4 and 6.

The study also found that the sinecatechins ointment group also reduced the recurrence rate of 6.5% to 8.3%, and developed new warts compared to 8.8% in the placebo group.

Furthermore, the application of Sinecatechins ointment with 10% and 15% green tea extract showed a well-tolerated mild or moderate adverse effect in all patients.

Truly, there is no doubt that the green tea process has a potential value for the treatment of external genital warts (EGWs) through the efficacy of phytochemical catechin in induced apoptosis of micro bacterial expression.

#Cooking of #CruciferousVegetables Have a Major Influence on the Yield, Chemical Structure, and Bioavailability of Antioxidants, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibit the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or taken from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

On the other hand, free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a natural antioxidant in whole food, researchers examined the antioxidant activities of some Brassica vegetables.

According to the dietary information,
* The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables were found to be influenced by antioxidant breakdown and leaching during cooking, particularly in heat cooking.

* Brassica vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables, perceived minor antioxidant ability in processed vegetables compared to uncooked samples.

* Food processing operations in terms of blanching, canning, sterilizing, and freezing have a strong effect on the antioxidant capacity.

In other words, cooking methods perhaps can have a major influence on the yield, chemical structure, and bioavailability of antioxidants in the Brassica family.

More precisely, the consumption of raw or slightly blanched veggies is an appropriate way to maximize its health benefits.

#Honey not Only Prevents Liver Lead Toxicity but Also Ameliorates Lead-Induced Anemia., According to Scientists

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is a large organ in the human body that processes a number of functions, including producing bile to aid digestion, detoxifying metabolites, synthesizing proteins, and filtering blood from the digestive tract before passing them to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of liver toxicity include gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Some patients with liver toxicity also experience the symptoms of right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor immediately. Acute liver toxicity may be life-threatening.

The most common causes of liver toxicity in the Western world are excessive alcohol drinking long-term use of certain medications and overdoses of herbal supplements.

Dr. Victor Navarro, M.D. in the examination of the herbal and dietary supplements at risk liver toxicity wrote, "Herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) -induced liver injury now accounts for 20% of cases of hepatotoxicity in the United States based on research data".

And, "The major implicated agents include anabolic steroids, green tea extract, and multi-ingredient nutritional supplements (MINS)".

The results strongly suggested if you are currently using some of the herbal and dietary supplements, please make sure that you follow the directions and guidelines set out in the products to prevent unnecessary live toxicity.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet foods for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweeteners by many people.

In finding the natural and potential ingredient for the prevention of liver toxicity, researchers investigated the honey's protective effect against toxic materials.

The study included 24 male rabbits allocated into four groups six rabbits each given daily during 24 days of experimentation; group 1: the control group, received distilled water (0.1 ml / kg.b.wt /daily); group 2: received oral lead acetate (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily); group 3: treated with oral honey (1g /kg.b.wt/daily) and oral lead (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily), and group 4: received oral honey (1 g/kg.b.wt/daily).

Injection of the lead group induced hepatic injury and caused anemia during three weeks of the exposure.

Treatment with honey in the lead group not only prevented liver lead toxicity but also ameliorated lead-induced anemia.

The results clearly suggested that honey has a protective effect against lead-induced blood, hepatic, and toxic effects.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about honey liver protective activity, researchers examined the Manuka and Talh honey against cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity in a rat model.

Before the injection of Manuka and Talh honey, rats treated with CISP-induced liver dysfunction observed liver toxicity.

Administration of Manuka honey prevented CISP-induced histopathological changes observed in the rat liver but not in the kidney.

Manuka and Talh honey also reduced oxidative stress in the liver by stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes from the treated rats.

In other words, both honeys inhibited the expression of proinflammatory cytokines including COX-2 and NF-κB by the cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity.

Taken together, honey, particularly Manuka and Talh honey may be considered function remedies for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#ChineseCabbage Reduces the Incidence of Liver Cancer Induced by Aflatoxin B1, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction of partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

Liver cancer at an early stage does not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cell DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

The most common risk factor of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to the overexpression of the overweight and obese population, liver cancer may slowly progress from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancers, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31%, and 43% of people with liver cancer are diagnosed at stages 0 and 1.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-invasive tumor activity researchers compared the potential anticancer ability of Chinese cabbage powder, which is a complex water-soluble extract from Chinese cabbage by spray-drying at an outlet temperature of 130 °C on liver cancer.
According to the chemical analysis, Chinese cabbage powder processed at least 11 potential anticancer substances.

In a 90-day animal experiment, 10% of Chinese cabbage powder in drinking water could improve the plasma micronutrient status, and inhibit the formation of aflatoxin B1-DNA adducts in liver cells in the initiation of tumor growth.

Furthermore, in vivo, 10% of Chinese cabbage powder effectively reduced the incidence of liver tumors induced by aflatoxin B1 from 6.67% to 0%.

The dose analysis assays suggested that 10% may be the minimal effective dose to prevent the occurrence of early liver tumors.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "This study will help elucidate the basis of epidemiological observations of dietary cancer prevention in humans, as well as explore related mechanisms".

Taken together, Chinese cabbage may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CynometraCauliflora Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of Obedity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a chronic medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

According to the statistics provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (2015-2016), in the US, approximately 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over were obese accompanied by another 31.8% overweight.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obesity.

In other words, obesity is a progressive chronic disease characterized by abnormal fat accumulation in the body tissues that may impair health.

Similar to other chronic medical conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or high blood pressure, obesity has recently become a serious health problem in the US as nearly 35% of Americans are obese accompanied by a similar percentage of overweight adults.

Obesity and overweight in the U.S. economy have eclipsed $1.7 trillion, equivalent to 9.3 percent of the nation's gross domestic product, according to a new overweight report on chronic diseases.

Dr. Maximilian Tremmel, the lead scientist in a systematic literature review of the economic burden of obesity, wrote, "Almost half of the world’s adult population will be overweight or obese by 2030 if the prevalence continues on the current trend [6] and consequently also the costs attributable to obesity will increase"

And, "A useful example of rapidly rising costs attributable to obesity from these selected studies are the two mentioned studies from Germany [44,46]. The results of the two papers together show that total societal costs in Germany due to obesity have increased from €9.8 million to €12.2 million between 2002 and 2008. Therefore, public health interventions should focus on the prevention of obesity as soon as possible, ideally at a young age".

Description
Cynometra cauliflora is a species of the genus Cynometra, native to Malaysia, and found mainly in northern Peninsular Malaysia.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the anti-obesity and lipid-lowering effects of ethanolic extract of C. cauliflora leaves and its major compound (vitexin) in C57BL/6 obese mice induced by high-fat diet (HFD).

The study included male C57BL/6 mice induced obesity by feeding with HFD (60% fat) for 16 weeks followed by the treatment that starts during the last 8 weeks of HFD feeding with C. cauliflora leaf extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg/day, orlistat (10 mg/kg) and vitexin (10 mg/kg).

According to the chemical analysis,
* The oral administration of C. cauliflora (400 and 200 mg/kg) and vitexin significantly reduced body weight, adipose tissue and liver weight, and lipid accumulation in the liver compared to the control HFD group.

* Both doses of C. cauliflora also significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased serum triglyceride, LDL, lipase, IL-6, peptide YY, resistin levels, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperleptinemia compared to the control HFD group.

* C. cauliflora significantly up-regulated the expression of adiponectin, Glut4, Mtor, IRS-1, and InsR genes associated with sustaining weight loss and significantly decreased the expression of Lepr in white adipose tissue involved in stimulating weight gain.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study shows interesting outcomes of C. cauliflora against HFD-induced obesity and associated metabolic abnormalities".

Taken altogether, beta-sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Intake of #CruciferousVegetables Daily and Regularly Shows an Inverse Association with the Risk of Coronary Heart Disease, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Heart diseases are a medical condition associated with any disruption of blood vessels and heart function.
There are 5 types of heart diseases, including
* Heart disease affected by the arteries to the heart, such as coronary artery heart disease.

* heart disease affected by heart valve functions in regulating blood flow such as valvular heart disease.

* heart disease affects electrical conduction such as arrhythmias.

* Heart disease affected by heart muscles such as cardiomyopathy. And

* Congenital heart disease caused by heart defect at birth

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, approximately 610,000 people die of heart disease every year.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) kills over 370,000 people annually.

Furthermore, the most common heart disease in North America is CHD, the type of heart disease caused by plaque buildup on artery walls, leading to narrow, thickened, and stiffened arteries. Some researchers suggested that the causes of plaque build-up on the arterial wall were the results of several factors including an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight, and smoking.

What causes plaques to build up on the arterial is debatable. However, researchers suggested that the Western diet is associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Dr. Venegas-Pino DE in the classification of the effect of diet on heart diseases said," the western-diet-fed male ApoE-/-: Ins2+/Akita mouse, with profound cardiovascular disease involving extensive atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and myocardial infarct resulting in shortened lifespan(4)".

The most common symptoms of coronary artery disease are angina, the condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort, and shortness of breath as a result of the weakening of the heart muscle which can not pump enough blood to the body's needs.

Over time, the prolonged weakened heart muscle can lead to complications of heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia.

In finding a potential remedy for the prevention of plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, researchers investigated the association of intake of glucosinolates with the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).

A total of 74,241 women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS; 1984-2012), 94,163 women in the NHSII (1991-2013), and 42,170 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (1986-2012), who were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer at baseline were given Glucosinolate intake that was assessed using validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires at baseline and updated every 2-4 years during follow-up.

According to the food questionnaire returned
* During 4,824,001 person-years of follow-up, 8,010 cases of CHD were identified in the three cohorts.

* After adjustment for major lifestyle and dietary risk factors of CHD, weak but significant positive associations were observed for glucosinolates with CHD risk when comparing the top with bottom quintiles (hazard ratio [HR]:1.09; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.17; Ptrend<0.001).

* Higher intakes of three major subtypes of glucosinolates were consistently associated with a higher CHD risk, although the association for indolyl glucosinolates did not achieve statistical significance. Regarding cruciferous vegetable intake.

Moreover, participants who consumed one or more servings per week of Brussels sprouts (HR: 1.16; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.26; P<0.001) and cabbage (HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.17; P=0.009) had a significantly higher CHD risk than those who consumed these cruciferous vegetables less than once per month.

Based on the results, researchers said, " dietary glucosinolate intake was associated with a slightly higher risk of CHD in US adults".

Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention of coronary heart disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
