Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that inhibit free radicals before they can cause damage to the tissues and organs.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers examined the efficacy of supplementation with curcumin in reducing intestinal cholesterol absorption in animal models.

The study included high-fat diet-fed apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE-/-) mice that prevented atherosclerosis fed a high-fat diet supplemented with or without curcumin (0.1% w/w) for 16 weeks.

Based on the tested differentiation, the curcumin treatment group showed not only a reduced cholesterol accumulation in the aortas by 56% but also lowered plasma total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels compared to the non-curcumin group.

Furthermore, curcumin supplementation group also demonstrated a reduced risk of atherosclerotic lesions by 45%.

Moreover, the efficacy of the anti antiatherogenic effect of curcumin was associated with a significant decrease in intestinal cholesterol absorption by 51% by inhibiting the intestinal gene expression of Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 involved in cholesterol uptakes.

Collectively, researchers said, "These findings support the hypothesis that curcumin supplementation reduces intestinal cholesterol absorption and prevents atherosclerosis in high-fat diet-fed ApoE-/- mice".

And " Curcumin affords a potent antiatherogenic action by inhibiting intestinal cholesterol absorption in the mouse".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

More precisely, PAC-induced lung cancer cell apoptosis and anti-proliferative activity through cell cycle arrest.

Furthermore, PAC treatment also enhanced the levels of glutathione S-transferases associated
with blocking cancer cell metastasis.


PAC treatment also down-regulated DNA metabolism, cell cycle, meiosis, mitosis and interestingly oncogenesis signaling.

PAC treatment also inhibited the alternation of ErbB receptors and signaling pathways and mTOR signaling pathways mutated in lung tumors, involved in cancer development and progression

In Caco-2 cells, injection of H2O2 caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks in comparison to untreated cells, but pre-treatment with betanin reduced DNA damage in these cells.

Betanin also exhibited the protein associated with pro-apoptotic function accompanied by the loss of mitochondrial transmembrane potential in the energy transformation.


In other words, betanin promotes the ROS cytotoxicity that leads to colon cancer cell death without harming the nearby cells through its antioxidant activity.

The findings strongly suggested betanin exerts anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity.

Taken together, betanin isolated from beetroot may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Decreases Interleukins Involved in the Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Associated with the Onset of Allergic Airway Disease (AAD)

Chronic allergic airway disease (AAD) is a group of the diseases characterized by airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR).

Airway inflammation is the hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with low-grade inflammation caused by the persistent production of proinflammatory cytokines by the immune system in the airway.


On the other hand, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is a cardinal feature of asthma associated with the response of the immune system against pathogens.

The most common symptoms of coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath in reactive airway disease (AAD) may not be due to asthma or other chronic airway conditions.

Conventionally, reactive airway inflammatory disease is treated with medication to control symptoms such as long-term use of an inhaler to relieve attacks and improve quality of life through avoidance of irritants.

If the cause of reactive airway disease is found, most cases of the condition may be cured by medication.


Dr. Jill R. Johnson, the lead scientist in the examination of Allergic Airway Disease: More than Meets the IgE? wrote, "After exposure, allergens crosslink with IgE on mast cells and induce histamine and leukotriene release (6), thereby initiating the allergic response and leading to the classic symptoms of allergy, i.e., sneezing and wheezing".

And, ". Omalizumab binds to the Ce3 domain of free IgE with high affinity (7), thereby inhibiting early- and late-phase asthmatic reactions (8) and decreasing the frequency of exacerbations in severe asthmatics (9). Omalizumab binding also prevents IgE from interacting with Fc«RI and Fc«RII1 on effector cells (mast cells, B cells, eosinophils, dendritic cells, and monocytes), thus impairing their activation and making them less sensitive to allergens, and disabling signaling cascades (10), with the end result of a reduction in symptoms".

In other words, allergic airway disease (AAD) is a result of an immune response upon exposure to the allergens, Therefore, by making the immune system less sensitive to allergens, symptoms of allergic airway disease (AAD) may be reduced.


Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to discover a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, researchers examined the ability of bromelain to reduce the inflammation of preexisting asthma via ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).

The study included female C57BL/6J mice with intraperitoneal OVA/alum and then challenged them with OVA aerosolization for 10 consecutive days.


On day 4, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administrated to the control group (n = 10) and bromelain (6mg/kg) in PBS was administrated to the bromelain (intervention) group (n = 10).

According to the tested assays, bromelain treatment of AAD mice (bromelain group) showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity indicated by reduced BAL total leukocytes, eosinophils, and cellular infiltrates via lung pathology compared to the control group.

Furthermore, bromelain also significantly reduced bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) CD4+ associated and CD8+ T cells d with the T helper 2 (TH2) cells in the promotion of allergic inflammation process without affecting cell numbers in the spleen or hilar lymph node.

The efficacy of bromelain in the inhibition was attributed to the decreased interleukins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In other words, bromelain protects asthma patients against allergic airway inflammation through its strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Based on the results, researchers said, "bromelain has a therapeutic effect in established AAD, which may translate into an effective adjunctive therapy in patients with similar conditions, such as allergic asthma, who have chosen to initiate treatment after the onset of symptoms".

In order to find more information about bromelain anti-ADD activity, researchers investigated the effect of bromelain treatment in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of allergic airway disease (AAD).

Selected mice were sensitized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) OVA/alum and challenged with daily OVA aerosols to induce ADD followed by the treatment of either saline, 2 or 6 mg/kg bromelain, twice daily for four consecutive days.


According to the findings, bromelain showed a similar effect as the aforementioned results in reduced total BAL leukocytes, eosinophils, CD4+, and CD8+ T lymphocytes, CD4+/CD8+ T cell ratio, and IL-13.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of allergic airway disease ADD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Genotoxicity is a process of destruction o a cell's genetic material (DNA, RNA), leading to gene mutation.
In other words, genotoxins are mutagens, the substances which have been found to induce cancer. The most common genotoxins are radiation and toxic chemicals.

Believe it or not, besides causing cancer, genotoxins are found to induce various types of genetic diseases, by the damage of the germ cell.

Some researchers suggested that the damage of DNA may be controlled if the genotoxins are identified through the use of anti antimutagens /anti-clastogens that suppress or inhibit the mutagenesis process.

The most common causes of genetic damage or alternation are reactive oxygen species (ROS), the unstable and genotoxic molecules that exist everywhere in the environment and inside the human body.

The antigenotoxic activity is a process to inhibit the property of chemical agents that induce damages to the genetic information, leading to mutation,anti-antimutagens

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with alternation of cell DNA or genetic change of cell.

Not all Genotoxicity is mutagenicity, but all mutagens are genotoxic.

Dr. Shareen H, the lead scientist in the study of "Chapter 18 - Genotoxicity and Cancer" wrote, "Genetic toxicology is the study of chemical and physical perturbations to DNA following exposure to endogenous or exogenous agents. Hazard assessment of engineered nanomaterials involves establishing the ability of these novel materials to induce DNA damage (genotoxicity) and to subsequently initiate tumor formation (carcinogenesis)".

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

Iand n finding a potential compound for the protection of cell DNA against damage, researchers examined the effects of cruciferous vegetables (CF) in protecting humans against cancer caused by chemically induced tumor formation.


According to the dietary information,* CF and their constituents showed the effect on enzymes involved in the metabolism of DNA-reactive carcinogens.

* In vitro models, sulforaphane, a bioactive compound found in CF exerted antigenotoxic effects on metabolically competent cell lines.

* Furthermore, Brassica juices induced the production of glutathione-S-transferases (GST) and cytochrome P-450 1A2 in human hepatoma cells (HepG2) against the genotoxic effects of B(a)P and other carcinogens.
* Moreover, brussels sprouts- and garden cress juices attenuated IQ-induced DNA damage and preneoplastic lesions in the colon and liver of rats.

* Most importantly, CF affects drug metabolism in humans and consumption of red cabbage led to changes in the pattern of meat-derived urinary mutagenicity.


Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the protection of the cells against genotoxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
