Regular drinking of green tea may have a potential effect on maintaining normal blood pressure and reducing the risk of hypertension, a recent study suggested.

Furthermore, a total of 20 Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats at 13 weeks old with metabolic syndrome were randomized into a saline-treated group (OLETF; n = 10) and a group treated with decaffeinated-GTE (25 mg/kg/day) (GTE-OLETF; n = 10), group fed with decaffeinated-GTE significantly reduced BP (OLETF vs. GTE-OLETF; 130 ± 7 vs. 121 ± 3 mmHg, p = 0.01) in compared control fed with saline.

The study also suggested that fed mice with green tea also showed an antihypertensive effect in reduced vascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NADPH in the generation of ROS, as well as improving endothelium (cell lines the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels)and lymphatic vessels dependent relaxation.

Dr. Ihm SH, the lead author said," (green tea extract) improved endothelial dysfunction and IR, and eventually lowered BP".

Taken together, there is no doubt that green tea processes a significant effect in reduced risk and treatment of hypertension through reduced oxidative stress and improved vascular relaxation as well as decreased metabolic syndrome in exaggerated hypertension.

Acute stress is a natural and emotional reaction that arises in response to a terrifying or traumatic event or witnessing a traumatic event. People react to acute stress differently depending on life experiences.

Chronic stress, a medical condition is a result of a person who can not respond to emotional pressure properly, leading to traumatic stress which he or she can not control.

Furthermore, CMS mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) after week 5 also showed increased plaque formation, the elevation of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterin, and proinflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, all indicated the development of atherosclerotic lesions.

However, the injection of 6-Gin not only reduced the expression induced by a high-fat diet but modulated the function of enzymes activated glucose and fatty acid uptake and oxidation, catalyzed the committed step in fatty acid synthesis, produced cholesterol, and other isoprenoids, particularly the lipid synthesis in the liver tissues.

These results suggested the role of ginger in alleviating atherosclerotic lesions and reversed the expression levels of lipid profiles and inflammatory cytokines in stressed mice.

Dr. Wang S, the lead scientist wrote, "The antiatherosclerotic effects of 6-Gin is mediated in part by the AMPK signaling pathway, which is closely associated with cholesterol synthesis and lipid accumulation".

Taken altogether, ginger-processed abundantly bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic mild stress and atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Then, the viable mites were randomized to one of five treatment groups: cyclodextrin-complexed and uncomplexed Manuka Honey, 100% and 50% tea tree oil, and no treatment.

Compared to the results of four treatments, researchers found that the survival probabilities are lowest with 100% tea tree oil, and highest with cyclodextrin-complexed and uncomplexed Manuka Honey.

The finding clearly suggested that the efficacy of cyclodextrin-complexed Manuka honey was comparable with 50% tea tree oil, an established treatment for ocular Demodex.

In order to reveal more information about honey anti-dry eye effects, researchers evaluated
the effects of Manuka (Leptospermum sp.) honey eye drops (Optimel, Melcare, Australia).

The study included 24 participants aged 20 to 55 years with contact lens-related dry eye randomized to two treatment groups with 20 completing the study.


One group received Optimel eye drops twice a day for two weeks followed by conventional lubricant (Systane Ultra, Alcon) therapy for two weeks while the other group completed the treatments in the reverse order.

The Optimal treatment exerted an improvement in Dry eye symptoms significantly and patients with more severe symptoms at baseline showed a greater improvement in symptoms.

Seventy-five% of contact lens wearers reported good adherence to Optimel treatment and 95% reported no issues using this product.

However, due to the short duration of treatment, there were no significant differences observed in the objective signs of a dry eye.

Researchers at the experiment wrote in the final report, "Optimel Eye Drops reduce the symptoms of dry eye in contact lens wearers and are safe to use".

Injection of crude ethanolic extracts of ginger at a dose of 10.95, 53.15, and 27.86 μg/ml with Median IC50 (concentration that inhibits cell growth by 50%) values exerted strong cytotoxicity and antioxidant activities.

The crude ethanolic extracts of ginger demonstrated a 7-9 fold in the function of genes associated with the transportation of the chemo drugs observed by the DNA fragments on the cancer cell line.

The extract also induced acute and subacute toxicity at the maximum dose of 5,000 mg/kg body weight.

Additionally, treatment with GEO (500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduced the volume of solid tumor development by 54.4% and 62.4% respectively and the lifespan was increased up to 50% in 1000 mg/kg b. wt GEO treated ascites tumor-induced animals.


The findings once again, reconfirm the cytotoxic and antitumor effects of ginger.

Taken together, ginger, the kitchen, and pungent spice may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of cancer with no or little side effects, pending the validity of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

A recent study conducted by renowned institutes suggested that regular drinking of green tea may reduce the risk of prevalence of metabolic syndrome.

The study also found that high tea consumers had lower BMI, and waist circumference, but moderated decreased diastolic blood pressure, as well as negatively correlated central obesity and fasting plasma glucose in women, but not in men, compared to low drinkers,

In support of the role of used of polyphenols in the treatment of Metabolic syndrome, a total of 2725 participants free of hypertension at baseline tested for blood pressure or taking hypertensive medication within the last 2 weeks at 2-4-year follow-up visit was conducted by the Integrated Cancer Registry of Catania-Messina-Siracusa-Enna, researchers showed that diet of highest quartile of total polyphenol intake was associated with 31% decreased risk of hypertension compared with the lowest intake (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.48, 0.98) in women with no significant association in men.

The study also stated that the most influential phytochemicals in reduced risk and treatment of metabolic syndrome ingredients are phenolic acids, and hydroxycinnamic acids as they showed independently associated with lower odds of hypertension (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.47, 0.93) in comparison to others.

Taken together, green tea with major chemical compounds of polyphenol may be used as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome.

Muscle pain is the condition of pain that originates from the muscle. Muscle pain may be caused by injury or overexertion, infections of soft tissues, or inflammatory conditions.

Systemic muscle pain is the pain throughout the body, often induced by an infection, an illness, or a side effect of long-term intake of certain medications, such as cholesterol medications.

There are many risk factors associated with muscle pain, including
1. Physical activity (PA) that requires the intensity, duration, and repetitiveness of muscular activity.

2. Occupations often involve static load, repetitive movements, and high peak forces, occurring for a prolonged duration are also some risk factors that causally relate to muscle pain development.

3. Overtraining in physical exercise.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of muscle pain quickly examined the effects of 11 days of raw (study 1) and heat-treated (study 2) ginger supplementation on muscle pain.

Study 1 and 2 were identical double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized experiments with 34 and 40 volunteers, respectively


Also, participants consumed 2 grams of either raw (study 1) or heated (study 2) ginger or placebo for 11 consecutive days and participants performed 18 eccentric actions of the elbow flexors to induce pain and inflammation.


According to the assays, ginger showed a significant pain reduction in 24 hours after eccentric exercise compared to placebo.

There was no significant difference between both types of ginger and placebo on other measures.

Daily supplementation with ginger reduced muscle pain caused by eccentric exercise, and this effect was not enhanced by heat-treating ginger.

Dr. and colleagues wrote, "Daily consumption of raw and heat-treated ginger resulted in moderate-to-large reductions in muscle pain following exercise-induced muscle injury".

In order to reveal additional information about ginger in treating muscle pain, researchers evaluated the acute effects of ginger on muscle pain, inflammation, and dysfunction induced by eccentric exercise.

The double-blind, cross-over design, included 27 participants who performed 24 eccentric actions of the non-dominant elbow flexors and ingested a 2 g dose of ginger or placebo 24 h and 48 h after exercise.


Before ginger treatment, eccentric exercise caused moderate arm pain (39 ± 20 mm; mean ± SD) dysfunction (14% decrease in ROM), and an increase in volume (1.8%).
Ginger consumption demonstrated no effect on muscle pain, dysfunction, or metabolic rate compared with the placebo before 24 hours.

However, after 24 hours, arm pain was reduced (13%, -5.9 ± 8.8 mm) the following day, 48 h after exercise.


Based on the finding, researchers said, "a single 2 g dose of ginger does not attenuate eccentric exercise-induced muscle pain, inflammation or dysfunction 45 min after ingestion. However, ginger may attenuate the day-to-day progression of muscle pain".

Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the treatment of muscle pain after 24 hours, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits Cardio-Toxicity Induced by Doxorubicin, Researchers Suggest

Cardiotoxicity is a condition caused by toxin accumulated in the heart that leads to damage to the heart muscle.
Cardiotoxicity reduces the heart's pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs.

The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity, are tiredness fatigue, chronic cough, water retention, and shortness of breath.

The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients receiving chemotherapy and the intake of certain medications. Cardiomyopathy is a severe case of cardiotoxicity.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers It is considered anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the protective effect of a purified extract of Withania somnifera against doxorubicin-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.

According to the results of the experiment, doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) -)-induced cardiac toxicity in male Wistar rats showed an increase of necrosis and apoptosis in heart tissues.

Furthermore, the elevation of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels and catalase activity associated with the expression of oxidative stress also were found in the doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats.

The doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats also exhibited depletion of total antioxidant capacity and of superoxide dismutase level in cardiac tissues, accompanied by increases of myeloperoxidase activity, total calcium content, and the expression of Bcl-2 protein in heart tissues.

Most importantly, all parameters induced by the injection of doxorubicin alterations were effectively attenuated by the administration of the purified standardized extract (1.5% withanolides; manufactured by Idea Sphere Inc., American Fork, UT, USA) of Withania somnifera (300 mg/kg).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Thus, Withania may play a role in the protection against cardiotoxicity and thus might be a useful adjuvant therapy where doxorubicin is the cancer-treating drug".

Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity induced by medications, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
