#Ginger Inhibits Muscle Pain Caused by Eccentric Exercise, Researchers Reveal
Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of muscle pain with no side effects, according to a study.
Muscle pain is the condition of pain that originates from the muscle. Muscle pain may be caused by injury or overexertion, infections of soft tissues, or inflammatory conditions.
Systemic muscle pain is the pain throughout the body, often induced by an infection, an illness, or a side effect of long-term intake of certain medications, such as cholesterol medications.
There are many risk factors associated with muscle pain, including
1. Physical activity (PA) that requires the intensity, duration, and repetitiveness of muscular activity.
2. Occupations often involve static load, repetitive movements, and high peak forces, occurring for a prolonged duration are also some risk factors that causally relate to muscle pain development.
3. Overtraining in physical exercise.
Most muscle pains can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers. If you are currently taking them for the treatment of muscle pain, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of muscle pain quickly examined the effects of 11 days of raw (study 1) and heat-treated (study 2) ginger supplementation on muscle pain.
Study 1 and 2 were identical double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized experiments with 34 and 40 volunteers, respectively
Also, participants consumed 2 grams of either raw (study 1) or heated (study 2) ginger or placebo for 11 consecutive days and participants performed 18 eccentric actions of the elbow flexors to induce pain and inflammation.
According to the assays, ginger showed a significant pain reduction in 24 hours after eccentric exercise compared to placebo.
There was no significant difference between both types of ginger and placebo on other measures.
Daily supplementation with ginger reduced muscle pain caused by eccentric exercise, and this effect was not enhanced by heat-treating ginger.
Dr. and colleagues wrote, "Daily consumption of raw and heat-treated ginger resulted in moderate-to-large reductions in muscle pain following exercise-induced muscle injury".
In order to reveal additional information about ginger in treating muscle pain, researchers evaluated the acute effects of ginger on muscle pain, inflammation, and dysfunction induced by eccentric exercise.
The double-blind, cross-over design, included 27 participants who performed 24 eccentric actions of the non-dominant elbow flexors and ingested a 2 g dose of ginger or placebo 24 h and 48 h after exercise.
Before ginger treatment, eccentric exercise caused moderate arm pain (39 ± 20 mm; mean ± SD) dysfunction (14% decrease in ROM), and an increase in volume (1.8%).
Ginger consumption demonstrated no effect on muscle pain, dysfunction, or metabolic rate compared with the placebo before 24 hours.
However, after 24 hours, arm pain was reduced (13%, -5.9 ± 8.8 mm) the following day, 48 h after exercise.
Based on the finding, researchers said, "a single 2 g dose of ginger does not attenuate eccentric exercise-induced muscle pain, inflammation or dysfunction 45 min after ingestion. However, ginger may attenuate the day-to-day progression of muscle pain".
Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional alternative for the treatment of muscle pain after 24 hours, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Ashwagandha Inhibits Cardio-Toxicity Induced by Doxorubicin, Researchers Suggest
Cardiotoxicity is a condition caused by toxin accumulated in the heart that leads to damage to the heart muscle.
Cardiotoxicity reduces the heart's pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs.
The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity, are tiredness fatigue, chronic cough, water retention, and shortness of breath.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that can be healed within a week or 2, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients receiving chemotherapy and the intake of certain medications. However, infection, excessive alcohol consumption, medical conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and thiamine, and Vitamin B deficiency have also been found to induce cardiotoxicity.
Cardiomyopathy is a severe case of cardiotoxicity.
Cardiomyopathy in most occurs in patients under chemotherapy. However, a group of diseases or disorders can also lead to damaged heart muscle. Injury to the heart muscle may induce cardiomyopathy, including viruses - such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), infection, long-standing high blood pressure, chronic or long-term alcohol use, and diabetes.
Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity depending on the cause of the disease may include
* Beta-blockers, for the improvement of the blood flow and reduction of palpitations, arrhythmias, and high blood pressure.
*ACE inhibitors induce (widen) the arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow.
* Diuretics, by getting rid of excess fluids that reduce heart function in blood pumping
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers It is considered anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the protective effect of a purified extract of Withania somnifera against doxorubicin-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.
According to the results of the experiment, doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) -)-induced cardiac toxicity in male Wistar rats showed an increase of necrosis and apoptosis in heart tissues.
Furthermore, the elevation of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels and catalase activity associated with the expression of oxidative stress also were found in the doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats.
The doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats also exhibited depletion of total antioxidant capacity and of superoxide dismutase level in cardiac tissues, accompanied by increases of myeloperoxidase activity, total calcium content, and the expression of Bcl-2 protein in heart tissues.
Most importantly, all parameters induced by the injection of doxorubicin alterations were effectively attenuated by the administration of the purified standardized extract (1.5% withanolides; manufactured by Idea Sphere Inc., American Fork, UT, USA) of Withania somnifera (300 mg/kg).
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Thus, Withania may play a role in the protection against cardiotoxicity and thus might be a useful adjuvant therapy where doxorubicin is the cancer-treating drug".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity induced by medications, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Processes Anti #ChronicRhinosinusitis Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Rhinosinusitis (RS) is a condition associated with the inflammation of the sinuses and nasal cavity.
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses that causes a headache as a result of exposure to a cold or flu virus, or an allergic reaction to pollen, mold, dust, or smoke.
Sinusitis affects 37 million people each year.
Other symptoms of RS include nasal congestion or obstruction, facial or dental pain, purulent rhinorrhea, postnasal drainage, headache, and cough.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of fever, fatigue, hyposmia, ear fullness or pressure, voice changes, epiphora, fever, psychological effects, and fatigue.
If you have some of the above symptoms that last more than 12 weeks, you may have chronic rhinosinusitis,
If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms without a cold or flu, you may have rhinosinusitis. Conventionally, most cases of bacterial rhinosinusitis (BRS) are treated by antibiotics.
In viral rhinosinusitis (VRS), medication focuses on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life.
Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that people with an immune deficiency may be vulnerable to rhinosinusitis developing.
Dr. Sergio E. Chiarella, the lead scientist wrote, "CRS is a common disease; in those patients with frequent exacerbations or who are refractory to treatment, an immunodeficiency evaluation should be considered. Treatment includes vaccination, antibiotic therapy, immunoglobulin replacement, and surgery".
More precisely, people who are using immune suppressants or weakened and immature immune systems are at an increased risk of rhinosinusitis.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of an inflammatory condition associated with the sinuses and nasal cavity, researchers examined the bromelain effects on patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
40 patients including 20 patients were given bromelain 500 mg tablet twice daily for 30 days, and 20 controls enrolled in the study.
According to the observation in the turbinate and ethmoid mucosas and in the serum of both groups, bromelain showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in paranasal sinus pathologies.
In other words, the efficacy of bromelain anti-chronic rhinosinusitis was attributed to its function in distribution evenly in the sinuses and nasal cavity.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Angelica Inhibits Oxidativestress In the Induction of Inflammation, Researchers Say
Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.
Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.
Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.
Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.
Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.
Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage.
However, in people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.
The most common symptoms of acute inflammation that occur within a short period of time such as hours is pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.
Any inflammation that lasts more than 3 months is considered chronic inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is the result of the immune system's inability to kill off all the microorganisms that participated in the acute phase of infection, leading to the formation of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases such as RA and diabetes.
Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune properties to curb foreign pathogens.
Diseases associated with chronic inflammation asthma are chronic peptic ulcer, tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontitis.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, scientists compared the anti-inflammatory activity of Chinese herbal extracts, Drynaria baronii (DB), Angelica sinensis (AS), and Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc(CO).
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the tested analysis,
* DB, AS, and CO inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated mouse macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells by inhibition of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression at both protein and mRNA levels.
* Furthermore, DB, AS, and CO dose-dependently scavenged the NO radical produced by NOC-7 (a nitric oxide (NO)).
* Moreover, DB and CO effectively inhibited the PGE(2) production by LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, although the extent of inhibition of PGE(2) production was slightly lower than that of NO production.
* More importantly, DB, AS, and CO inhibited cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression involved in the initiation of inflammation at both protein and mRNA levels, compared to much lesser extents as compared with that for iNOS expression
* Finally, AS only marginally inhibited the LPS-stimulated PGE(2) production
Taken together, Danggui may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits Biomarkers Associated with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), According to Studies
People who have an accumulation of triglycerides within hepatocytes that exceeds 5% of liver weight are considered to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
According to the statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has risen rapidly over the past few decades and become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the developing world. The disease affects between 17-30% of the population in Western countries and 2-4% worldwide.
Epidemiologically. obesity, type II diabetes, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance are the well-known primary causes of NAFLD.
The findings strongly suggested that NAFLD is a geographically related disease associated with dietary patterns.
Dr. Alanna McCarthy, the lead scientist in the examination of diet patterns in the risk NAFLD wrote, "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a serious consequence of high-fat diet intake and currently affects approximately one-third of the world’s entire population".
And, "Recent evidence suggests that patients with NAFLD have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to the general population. However, little is known about the link between NAFLD and pathological cardiac remodeling leading to heart disease".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find natural prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), researchers investigated the effects of anthocyanin supplementation on insulin resistance and liver injury biomarkers in patients.
74 subjects with NAFLD included in the study were divided into 2 groups in this double-blind, randomized study. Patients received either purified anthocyanin (320 mg/d) derived from bilberry and black currant or placebo for 12 weeks.
During the experiment, the anthocyanin group exhibited a significant decrease in plasma alanine aminotransferase, cytokeratin-18 M30 fragment, and myeloperoxidase, the biomarkers associated with NAFLD, compared to controls.
Compared to the baseline, the anthocyanin group significantly decreased in fasting blood glucose and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, however, these differences were not significant relative to placebo controls.
Not surprisingly, anthocyanin supplementation significantly decreased the 2-hour loading glucose level compared to control, according to the oral glucose tolerance test.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "A 12-week supplement of purified anthocyanin improved insulin resistance, indicators of liver injury, and clinical evolution in NAFLD patients".
Furthermore, according to the results from the study of ApoE(∗)3Leiden mice fed a Western-type cholesterol-containing diet without (HC) or with 0.1% (w/w) Mirtoselect (HCM), an anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract for 20weeks on diet-induced NASH, Mirtoselect treatment group showed an attenuated HC-induced hepatic steatosis and reduced hepatic cholesteryl ester content.
Furthermore, injection of Mirtoselect also exerted local anti-inflammatory effects in the liver by reducing inflammatory cell clusters and neutrophil infiltration in HCM.
In other words, HCM protected the liver against the HC diet and significantly induced hepatic expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic genes associated with the onset of NAFLD.
Dr. Morrison MC, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote, "Mirtoselect attenuates the development of NASH, reducing hepatic lipid accumulation, inflammation, and fibrosis, possibly mediated by local anti-inflammatory effects associated with reduced accumulation and crystallization of intrahepatic free cholesterol".
Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of #CardiovascularDisease, According to Studies
Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart and blood vessels integrity against damage or injury, including heart diseases, and stroke.
In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men, comapred to women.
Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.
On another hand, stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.
The most common types of stroke are ischemic stroke associated with the obstruction of a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain and hemorrhagic stroke associated with small blood vessel ruptures. The most common cause of stroke is unmanaged high blood pressure.
The US statistics indicate that stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Each year, more than 79o,000 people suffer a stroke, including 600,000 of first attacks, and 185,000 recurrent attacks.
Coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias and stroke is the most common type of cardiovascular disease found in the Western world.
The most common symptoms of CVD include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and fainting.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the CVD possibility.
The exact causes of cardiovascular diseases are unidentified. However, according to epidemiological studies, the most prevalent factor that causes an increased risk of CVD is an unhealthy lifestyle correlated to the promotion of the Western diet.
Dr. Oikonomou E and colleagues in the joint study led by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens wrote, "... Western dietary pattern (increased intake of fat, red meat, and carbohydrates and minimal consumption of fruits and green leafy vegetables) was predictive of severe CAD (area under the curve: 0.73, 95% confidence intervals: 0.64-0.83, P < .001)".
And, "an unhealthy Western type of diet is associated with the severity of coronary artery lesions in patients with stable CAD. These findings highlight the role of dietary patterns when estimating cardiovascular risk for the management of patients with CAD".
The results strongly suggested that lifestyle change has a strong implication in the prevention of CVD.
Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of heart disease and stroke, researchers examined the efficacy of cranberry supplementation on cardiovascular disease metabolic risk factors in adult populations.
The systematic review is conducted by searching the databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to June 2018, to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the effect of cranberry supplementation on cardiovascular metabolic risk factors.
According to the results from the review of the pooled effect size, cranberry administration decreased the risk of CVD by significantly reducing systolic blood pressure and body mass index.
However, other parameters associated with the metabolic risks such as triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, C-reactive protein, and intercellular adhesion molecule were not changed much after cranberry administration.
Furthermore, the reduction of SBP was more pronounced in patients with age ≥50 comapred to the younger age group.
Moreover, comapred to no change in supplemental administration, there was also a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein concentrations in subgroups with subjects <50 mean age and triacylglycerol levels in subsets with cranberry administered in juice form.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded. " cranberry supplementation may be effective in managing systolic blood pressure, body mass index, and high-density lipoprotein in younger adults. Further high-quality studies are needed to confirm these results.".
Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Inhibits Symptoms and Risk of #AcuteDiarrhea, Researchers Say
Diarrhea is an acute condition of loose, watery stools (bowel movements). In other words, if you have loose stools three or more times in one day, you are considered to have diarrhea.
Most cases of diarrhea are acute and last for a few days. However, chronic diarrhea that lasts for a long period of time is an indication of other medical conditions, including irritable bowel disorder, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Accompanied by loose and watery stool, patients with chronic diarrhea also experience abdominal cramps and pain, fever, blood, and mucus in the stool, bloating, nausea, and the urge for a bowel movement.
The most common cause of diarrhea is an infection caused by bacteria and viruses. Some medications such as antibiotics also have been found to induce acute diarrhea.
The condition in some cases can also be induced by lactose intolerance, fructose, artificial sweeteners, and other digestive disorder such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and celiac disease.
Acute diarrhea can be treated successfully if the cause is found. Untreated diarrhea has been found to cause complications of dehydration, particularly in children, and a weakened immune system in older adults
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and for the treatment of pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of diarrhea, researchers examined the effects of bromelain on K88-positive enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (K88+ ETEC), an important cause of diarrhea in young piglets.
The study included bromelain (0, 12.5, or 125 mg) orally administered to just weaned piglets for 10 days followed by the commencement of bromelain treatment, piglets were challenged with K88+ ETEC (5 x 10(10) K88ac:0149) for seven days.
Injection of 12.5 or 125 mg showed a significant effect in reducing the incidence of K88+ ETEC diarrhea and protected piglets from a life-threatening disease.
Both doses of bromelain-treated pigs also had significantly increased weight gain compared to untreated pigs.
However, bromelain only temporarily inhibited K88+ ETEC receptor activity observed by the receptor activity being regenerated 30 hours following treatment, consistent with the regeneration of new enterocytes.
In other words, both doses of bromelain can only temporarily inactivate ETEC receptors in vivo and protect against ETEC-induced diarrhea.
These results strongly suggested that bromelain treatment prevented the attachment of K88+ ETEC to piglet small intestines which inhibits the risk of K88+ ETEC pathogenesis.
Based on the finding, Dr. Chandler DS, the lead scientist wrote, "Bromelain may, therefore, be an effective prophylaxis against ETEC infection".
Taken together, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
