#Phytochemical #Carotenoids, β-Carotene, and Lutein or Zeaxanthin Inhibit the Risk of Age-Related #Cataracts (#ARC), According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

A cataract occurring in one or both eyes is a condition characterized by the clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cases of cataracts are found in older adults.

Believe it or not, by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

The exact causes of cataracts are not identified. However, some researchers suggested that aging, a lifetime of exposure to ultraviolet radiation contained in sunlight, accompanied by cigarette smoking, a poor diet, and alcohol consumption are some of the prevalent factors associated with cataract development.

Additionally, eye injury, exposure to toxic substances or radiation, and some medical conditions such as diabetes also increase the risk of cataracts.

Conventionally, there is no cure for cataracts. Treatment focuses on replacing the clouded natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implant.

According to the statistics, cataract including the direct annual medical costs for outpatient, inpatient, and prescription drug services has reached a total of $6.8 billion in annual healthcare cost. The condition also affects over 24.4 million Americans age 40 and older.

Some researchers suggested that the risk of cataracts in older Americans may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades.

Dr. Chung-Jung Chiu, the lead scientist wrote, "The Oriental pattern was characterized by higher intake of vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, tomatoes, and seafood. The Western pattern was characterized by higher intake of red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy products, French fries, refined grains, and eggs".

And, "Our data indicate that consuming a Western dietary pattern is significantly associated with increased odds of early nuclear opacity".

Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cataracts, researchers examined the effects of dietary vitamins and carotenoids on the risk of age-related cataracts (ARC).

The meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies includes the search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to June 2018.

According to the results of 8 RCTs and 12 cohort studies in the meta-analysis identified, carotenoids, including β-carotene (RR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.99; P = 0.023), and lutein or zeaxanthin (RR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.75, 0.89; P < 0.001) were significantly associated with reduced risk of ARC in the cohort studies.

However, in RCTs, β-carotene found abundantly in carotenoid intervention did not reduce the risk of ARC significantly compared with the placebo group.

According to the dose-response analysis, in cohort studies for every 10-mg/d increase in lutein or zeaxanthin intake, the risk of ARC significantly decreased by 26% with the relative odds ratio (RR) of 0.74. and for every 5-mg/d increase in β-carotene intake, the risk of ARC significantly decreased by 8% with the RR of .92.

In other words, the intake of carotenoids has a negative implication on the risk of ARC.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Higher consumption of certain...carotenoids was associated with a significantly decreased risk of ARC in cohort studies, but evidence from RCTs is less clear".

Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related cataracts (ARC), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Extract Show no Effects on Urinary Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Patients, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion of body tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

Urinary tract infection (UTIs) mostly occur in women is an infection that affects the bladder and urethra caused mostly by bacterial strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

UTIs have been found to limit the function of the bladder and induce kidney infection.

The most common symptoms of urinary infection are a persistent urge to urinate, urinary burning sensation, cloudy urine, and smelly urine.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine and bladder and pelvic pain.

The most common risk factors for urinary tract infection are gender, females are more like to have UTI comapred to males, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menopausal women.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) caused by the immune system attacking the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers.

MS causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.

SHARON BEGLEY in examing the genetic preposition involved in MS wrote, " A newly discovered genetic mutation gives people who carry it a whopping 70 percent chance of developing multiple sclerosis, potentially opening the way toward new therapies for a debilitating neurological disorder whose ultimate cause has stumped researchers for decades".

The author continued, "The 70 percent chance of developing MS compares to a 0.1 percent risk in the general population, and the 100 or so previously known genetic variants increase the chance of MS to only about 0.3 percent at most, with no single gene packing much of a punch".

In other words, people having certain genes inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of MS developing compared to people who do not.

According to the statistics, in 2010/2011, approximately 93,500 Canadians were diagnosed with the disease, or 290 cases per 100,000 population. Believe it or not, MS is the most prevalent in Canada compared to other parts of the world.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention of urinary infections, researchers examined the effect of cranberry extract (CE) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients suffering from urinary disorders.

The prospective, double-blind study included a total of 171 adult MS outpatients with urinary disorders presenting at eight centers who received either cranberry extract ((36 mg proanthocyanidins per day) or a matching placebo for 1 year.

According to the results of the follow-up, the was no difference between cranberry and placebo).
In other words, there was no difference in time to the first symptomatic UTI distribution across 1 year, with an estimated hazard ratio of 0.99, 95% CI [0.61, 1.60] (p = 0.97).

Furthermore, the secondary endpoints and tolerance also did not differ between groups.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Taking cranberry extract versus placebo twice a day did not prevent UTI occurrence in MS patients with urinary disorders".

Taken together, cranberry can not be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of urinary disorders in MS patients, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Coffee Exerts a protective Effects Against the Early Onset of Type 2 Diabetes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The good news for the coffee lover is that your risk of diabetes is significantly reduced in comparison to the non-coffee-drinking population, a respectable researcher indicated
Coffee, a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the coffee plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose, either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions to cells in the immune system.

In the reviewed literature of 20 prospective studies with 1,109,272 study participants and 45,335 cases of type 2 diabetes included in the analysis with a follow-up duration ranging from 10 months to 20 years, coffee intake is inversely associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Compared with no or rare coffee consumption, the range of relative risk (RR; 95% CI) for diabetes significantly lower in all studies was 0.92, 0.85 0.75, 0.71, and 0.67 respectively for people who have 1-6 cups/day in all reviewed studies.

Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed an insignificant difference in relative risk but inversely diabetic development in a dose-response manner.

According to Zhejiang University, coffee consumption reduces the risk of type II diabetes and may involve the expression of different mechanistic factors, including glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, insulin resistance, glucose-6-phosphatase, intestinal glucose absorption, antioxidant activity, inflammatory biomarkers, nuclear factor-κB inhibition, glucose uptake, glucose homeostasis, glucose metabolism, and insulin secretion.

Dr. Akash MS, the head researcher said, "The experimental and epidemiologic evidence presented here elucidate the protective effects of coffee consumption on T2DM, involving multiple preventive mechanisms".

Others, in the analysis of the risk of autoimmune diabetes with coffee intake in adults, proposed that although consumption of coffee showed an inverse association with type II diabetes through improving the production of high glutamic acid decarboxylase antibody, the general trend was weak.

The risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults is reduced even further with an additional cup of coffee per day. the study also indicated.

The findings suggested that coffee with caffeine or caffeine showed a strong protective effect against early onset of type 2 diabetes, and the risk of T2DM decreased even more for every cup/day increment in coffee intake, expressed by dose-response analysis.

#Herbal #Cinnamon Aqueous Extract Reduces the Risk of #Alzheimer's Diseases, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Adding spicy cinnamon into your diet may have a significant effect on blocking the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, a new study suggested.
Although cinnamon is best known for its anti-diabetic effect, spices also consist of certain chemical constituents associated with preventing insulin resistance(2).

The herb has been used in folk medicine as an anti-fungal and bacterial agent to improve the reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(3).

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life.

Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The exact causes of Alzheimer's disease are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as cigarette smoking, midlife high blood pressure and obesity, diabetes, cerebrovascular lesions, and psychosocial factors (high education, active social engagement, physical exercise, and mentally stimulating activity) are associated with the onset of the disease(10).

Some researchers suggested that people who are following lifelong intake of the Western diet and are at higher risk due to family history should be aware of some early signs and symptoms such as memory loss, the difficulty of planning and solving problems, completing familiar tasks, determining time or place, finding the right words, misplacing items often. ... and difficulty making decisions.

If you experience some signs and symptoms above, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In insulin resistance Winstar male rats induced by high fat/high fructose (HF/HFr), researchers found that injection of cinnamon (CN) alleviates the increases of mRNA associated with Alzheimer's such as PTEN, Tau, and amyloid precursor protein, through its neuroprotective activity associated with improved whole-body insulin sensitivity and related changes in the brain. (4).

The cinnamon aqueous extract has also been found to have the ability to inhibit tau aggregation in vitro and even induce dissociation of tangles isolated from AD brain, as well as sequestering highly reactive and toxic byproducts of oxidation, through protecting tau from abnormal modifications, according to the University of California(5).

PTEN is a tumor suppressor gene involved in the regulation of the cell cycle.

Tau protein is found in neurons of the central nervous system, and un-stabilized microtubules have been found in patients with Alzheimer's Disease.

Amyloid precursor protein plays an important role in the formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system, shown to generate beta-amyloid (Aβ) in patients with Alzheimer's diseases

In cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease animal models, caused by the accumulation of soluble oligomeric assemblies of the β-amyloid polypeptide (Aβ), oral administration of the cinnamon extract (CEppt), enhanced the decrease of Aβ oligomers, reduction of plaques, and improvement in cognitive behavior(6).

Some researchers suggested that the spice may be used as amyloid-beta aggregation blockers as a few approved drugs available to treat Alzheimer's disease(9) due to many potential drugs in the pipeline for the disease and other amyloid-associated illnesses may not be as promising as thought(8).

Taken together, cinnamon and its extract may have a protective effect in reducing risk and for treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, through reduction of the complications caused by metabolic syndromes such as obesity and diabetes.

According to DR. Georgakopoulou EA(7), Oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis and a burning sensation in the mouth with a large amount. According to traditional Chinese medicine, overdoses of cinnamon can be toxic and damage the liver(1)(7).

#Phytochemical #Sinigrin Found in Cruciferous Vegetables In the Promotion of #WoundHealing, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound to speed up wound healing, according to studies.
Wound healing is a natural process of an immune system response to protect our body against harmful pathogenic invasion.

After receiving the message from the neurons in the brain, the immune first line of defense including the macrophages stimulates the blood palettes to the site of infection to cover the injury and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the stimuli and pathogens which try to enter the body through the wound.

Some anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal conditions also switch to pro-inflammatory cytokines depending on the severity of the injury.

In some cases, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death of the nearby cells, leading to the formation of irreversible scars, such as hepatitis infection.

Even worse, if the immune system can not kill off all pathogens in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Bacterial pathogens often cause infection in specific areas of the body by overgrowth of the number of bacteria in the site, including the gut.

According to epidemiological studies, some bacteria are opportunistic pathogens, and people with a weakened immune system are particularly prone to their invasion.

Dr. Dennis W. Metzger, the lead scientist wrote, " While it has been commonly thought that viral-induced epithelial cell damage allows bacterial invasiveness, recent studies by several groups have now implicated dysfunctional innate immune defenses following influenza as the primary culprit for enhanced susceptibility to secondary bacterial infections".

The results strongly indicated the increased risk of bacterial infection in people with a weakened immune system.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for speeding up wound healing explored the wound healing effect of sinigrin on HaCaT cells.

In the phytosome with sinigrin with an average particle size of 153 ± 39 nm, the zeta potential of 10.09 ± 0.98 mV and complex efficiency of 69.5 ± 5%.

The formulated sinigrin-phytosome complex significantly exhibited a greater wound-healing effect compared to the use of sinigrin alone.

Compared to only 71% of wounds closer to sinigrin after 42 hours, the phytosome complex completely healed the wound.

At a lower concentration of 0.07 mg/mL, the sinigrin–phytosome complex displayed 79%, whilst sinigrin showed only 50% of wound closure.

At the higher concentration of 0.14 mg/mL the sinigrin–phytosome complex completely cured the wound (100%), compared to only 71% wound healing of sinigrin.

Furthermore, The sinigrin-phytosome complex displayed minimal toxicity towards HaCaT cells.

Injection of the complex also exerted a strong effect on A-375, a human melanoma cell line.

Dr. Mazumder A, after taking into account co and confounders wrote at the end of the experiment, " sinigrin-phytosome complex augmented the therapeutic potential of sinigrin towards the wound healing activity".

Taken together, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for speeding up wound healing, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

9 Foods Which Promote the Growth of Fungus Candida, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Candida albicans are members of a large group of microorganism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast(2)(3), fungi(4)(5)(6), and mold(6) that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Non-albicans Candida (NAC) species cause 35-65% of all candidaemias in the general patient population(1).

According to joint study, in many cases, biofilm(microorganisms with cells stick to each other on a surface) formation(7) gene mutations(8) and overexpression of genes(9)(10) are often associated with increased Candida resistance toward antifungal agents.
Foods stimulated an overgrowth of fungus candida
1. Fruits and artificial ingredients
The high sugar content in fruit feeds Candida except for green apples, citrus, berries, and avocado(186)
and artificial ingredients can depress the immune system(187).

2. Aged cheese(188)
Candida famata found in aged cheese may induce invasive candidiasis(188).

3. Additive and preservation
Men made chemicals can disrupt the digestive track friendly bacteria and allow candida overgrowth(189)(190) such as citric acid. Non-organic food like meat or eggs can also contain antibiotics and steroids for faster growth(191).

4. Alcohol(192)
Alcohol can depress the liver(193) and the immune system(194)(195), causing overgrowth candida.

5. Caffeine, sugar, and sweetener
Caffeine(196)(197), sugar and sweetener(198) all harmful to the body and feed candida

6. Gluten
Gluten is a protein composite that appears in foods processed from wheat and related species
that can cause immune suppression(199)(200)(201).

7. Mushrooms
Mushroom which is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source can promote fungus overgrowth(202).

8. Condiments(203)
Condiment which is a sauce or seasoning added to food to impart a particular flavor can depress the immune system(204), causing candida.

9. Vinegar but not apple cider vinegar
Vinegar is an acidic liquid produced from the fermentation of ethanol in a process that yields its key ingredient, an acetic acid which can deplete the stomach of acids and cause inflammation(205)(206) in the digestive tract, including acetic acid ulcer(205).

#CruciferousVeggies' #Sulforaphane (SFN) Inhibits Liver Stress Markers Associated with Liver Toxicity, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Human toxicity is a general term that refers to any substance that causes harm to human health if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin.
Liver toxicity is a process that causes liver damage by reducing the function of the liver.

Liver oxidative stress caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.

The liver is the largest internal organ that not only filters the blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body but also plays a critical role in the production of cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver stress is a condition in which the function of the liver is partly reduced. Hepatic stress can be observed by the levels of liver stress-makers, including transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT).

Abnormal high levels of transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) are early indications of liver damage or injury.

Epidemiologically, drugs that induce liver injury are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-infective drugs (anti-tubercular drugs), anti-cancer drugs, hormonal drugs, immunosuppressive agents, and sedative and neuropsychiatric drugs.

Acetaminophen according to a study is the most common form of medication that implicates drug-induced liver injury

However, antibiotics are another class of drugs that cause liver toxicity most commonly
In finding a potent veggie against drug-induced hepatotoxicity, researchers examined sulforaphane (SFN), a thiol compound found in wide abundance in cruciferous plants against acute liver injury.

In VPA-induced liver injury in rats for 7 days, which causes significant biochemical alterations and hepatic histopathological damage, SFN (0.5 mg/kg, orally) for 7 days showed a significant protective effect against liver injury observed by the liver function biomarkers.

More precisely, levels of liver stress markers such as alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were strongly reduced by the administration of SFN.

According to the tested analysis, SFN not only restored serum albumin concentration in a significant manner but also SFN significantly mitigated VPA-induced histopathological alterations.

The efficacy of SFN against liver toxicity was attributed to several mechanisms including inhibition of malondialdehyde and tumor necrosis factor α content associated with oxidative stress and the increase of concomitant increase in hepatic heme oxygenase-1 content and glutathione concentration involved in the antioxidant expression.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "SFN can significantly ameliorate VPA-induced hepatotoxicity and liver injury primarily by a direct association between antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken altogether, cruciferous plants may be considered supplements for the prevention of acute liver injury, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
