#ChasteTreeBerries Process Both Extrogenic and Anti-Estrogenic Activties Depending on the Levels of Estrogen in the Body

Kyle J. Norton

Chaste tree berries possess both estrogenic and anti-estrogenic properties may be considered a functional food for women with delayed aging progression, restored hormone balance in ameliorated menstrual disorders, and alleviated menopausal symptoms, and more........

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belongings to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

Estrogenic Property
Chaste tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus L.) displaced estrogenic ability induced the reaction of estrogen from the binding site of estrogen receptors alpha (ERalpha) and beta (ERbeta), in ameliorated the deregulation of 17β-Estradiol (E2) in exhibited the initiation and progression of cell malignancies, affecting various aspect in women body, a study by respectable Institute suggested.

According to the University of Illinois at Chicago, linoleic acid isolated from the extract of Vitex agnus-castus exerted estrogenic activity in binding to estrogen receptors, inducing certain estrogen-inducible gene expression in preserving the integrity of the genome, presented in a cell or organism.

Dr. Jarry H, the lead author in the study of "evidence for estrogen receptor beta-selective activity of Vitex agnus-castus and isolated flavones" found that besides linoleic acid, flavones derivative vitexin and Pendleton. isolated from Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) also expressed estrogenic effect as most active ERss-selective phytoestrogens.

Anti-estrogen Property
Chaste tree berry(Vitex agnus-castus), also processes anti-estrogenic properties in binding the estrogen receptors for a balance between the activities of estrogen receptor ERα or ERβ.

Anti-estrogenic effects are the action of binding the estrogen receptor(ERα ) and/ERβ in inhibiting the excessive levels of estrogen circulating in the body.

According to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in the study of the potential effect of estrogen mimics or anti-estrogens in phytochemicals of popular dietary herbal supplements, researchers found that almost all herbal supplements containing phytochemical components showed a capability in binding to the human estrogen receptor and exhibit selective estrogen receptor modulation, including chaste tree berry.

Casticin, a flavonoid isolated from Vitex rotundifolia, significantly expressed an anti-estrogenic effect in reduced the prolactin release stimulated by E2 in induced inhibition of ERα mRNA expression in a concentration-dependent manner, through its anti-estrogenic effect.

In hyperprolactinemia (MIHP) induced by administration of metoclopramide dihydrochloride (50 mg/kg, tid, ip, for 10 d) in SD rats, application of casticin (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, ip, for 7 d) reduced serum prolactin levels by 33.9%, 54.3%, and 64.7% and at(1 and 10 micromol/L) inhibited E2-induced pituitary cell proliferation by 27.7% and 42.1%, respectively through reduced levels of 17β-Estradiol (E2) significantly.

More importantly, oral administration of capsaicin, a flavonoid isolated from Vitex rotundifolia displayed an anti-estrogenic activity in decrease excessive levels of 17β-Estradiol (E2) significantly

Chaste tree berry(Vitex agnus-castus) exerts estrogenic components of plant extracts may constitute a potential use for some dietary supplements in humans for the treatment of various estrogen-related syndromes and diseases, including breast and prostate cancers, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and stroke, and neurodegeneration and anti-estrogenic effects in binding estrogen receptor site to preserve the balancing of hormone expression of estrogen through ER-alpha and ERBeta inhibition and exhibition by regulating the function of some estrogen-inducible genes.

In other words, chaste tree berry stimulated estrogen receptors in the release of estrogen into the blood in case of deficiency or inhibited extra levels of estrogen in case of excess in maintenance hormone balancing with other sex hormones.

A renowned institute study suggested that Chaste tree berries may be a functional food for the treatment of female sex hormone deficiency.
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to a joint study led by the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, orally administrated Vitex agnus-castus fruit improved hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in the regulation of the reproductive system and immune system in free radical scavenger activities involved natural aging, in a d-galactose induced aging model in female mice.

Mice injected with d-galactose (500 mg/kg/d for 45 days) in seventy-two female NMRI mice (48 3-month-old normal mice and 24 18-24-month-old mice), weighing 30-35 g randomly divided into six groups: control, Vitex, d-galactose, Vitex + d-galactose, Aging, and Vitex + Aging, groups treated with Chaste tree berry or combination with herbal medicine showed a strong effect in increased the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone.

Dr. Ahangarpour A, the lead researcher said, " Vitex can be suitable for some aging problems such as oxidative stress, female sex hormone deficiency, and an atrophic endometrium".

Furthermore, the testing of flavonoid glycosides, orientin and apigenin 3, 8-di-C-glycosides and iridoid compound, aucubin isolated from the ethanolic extract of Vitex agnus-castus fruits, also showed a significant increase in plasma progesterone and total estrogens levels and reduction in luteinizing and plasma prolactin hormones in two dose levels 0.6 and 1.2 g kg(-1) per body weight (b.w.).

Additionally, the study also found that the ethanolic extract induced a significant increase in the uterine weight which showed an interaction of the sexual hormone of progesterone and estrogen of ovariectomized rats at two dose levels comparable to that of a control group.

Dr. Jillian Stansbury, not the author of the above studies said, "Consumption of Vitex fruits by female chimpanzees as part of their natural diets has been found to dramatically increase progesterone levels in the urine, indicating an overall progesterone effect.34 One hypothesis is that reduced LH allows the follicle-stimulating hormone to dominate and can lead to decreased estrogen and testosterone and a relative increase in progesterone".

Taking together, in women, Chaste Tree Berry may have a strong effect in influencing sex hormones
production in an expression of antioxidant, anti-aging, and normalized hormone activities.

Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) Found in Brassica Genus Induces Apoptosis of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-Positive Burkitt's Lymphoma, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Herpesvirus is a large family of DNA viruses that cause diseases, depending on the types of viral infection.
According to viral classification, there are 8 types of herpes virus, including human herpesvirus 1 which causes cold sores around the mouth. and 2 that causes genital herpes, herpes zoster that causes chickenpox and shingles, Epstein-Barr virus that causes infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) that causes mononucleosis, Human herpesvirus 6 and 7(HHV6 - 7) that causes roseola and Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) that causes cancer, such as Kaposi's Sarcoma.

According to statistics, in the United States, half of teens and adults under age 50 are still infected with the oral herpes virus, and about 1 in 8 have an infection with the genital herpes virus.

All herpes viruses like other viruses are nuclear-replicating, infecting healthy cell nuclei through replication of viral DNA and transcription of viral mRNA.

People infected may experience symptoms of painful sores in the genital area, anus, buttocks, thighs, itching, painful urination, vaginal discharge,..... and tender lumps in the groin.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive is early in the course of the illness associated with VCA-IgM antibodies caused by EBV infection.

The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), is also known as human gammaherpesvirus 4, one of the nine known human herpesvirus types in the herpes family.

Unlike other types of the herpes virus, symptoms of EBV may vary, including extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.

Conventionally, there is no specific treatment for EBV. The most common treatment is to improve quality of life by targeting symptoms such as reducing swelling of tissues with corticosteroids

In finding a potential plant with infectious diseases, researchers compared the effects of indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) a natural product found in broadly consumed plants of the Brassica genus, such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower, effects on the various vegetablesEpstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive

Based on the tested results, I3C efficiently induced apoptosis in cell lines derived from EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphomas (virus latency I/II).

However, I3C did not have any cytotoxic activity against EBV-negative Burkitt's lymphomas and immortalized EBV-infected lymphoblastoid cell lines (virus latency III).

Furthermore, The effect of I3C on cell viability. in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma was attributed to C6-methylated derivative, but not other 3-substituted indoles.

Moreover, 3C treatment caused apoptosis characterized by loss of cancer cell mitochondria membrane potential and caspase activation by alternating the expression of proteins involved in the control of apoptosis and transcription regulation in EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines.

Particularly, I3C derivative 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) prolonged survival and reduced tumor burden of mice xenotransplanted with EBV-positive Burkitt's lymphoma Daudi cells.

Based on the results, researchers said, "These results, together with previous reports from clinical trials indicating the lack of toxicity in humans of I3C and derivatives, support the use of these compounds as a new therapeutic approach for treating patients with endemic (EBV-positive) Burkitt's lymphoma".

Taken together, the Brassica Genus may be considered the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive induced cancer remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#FennelExtract Reduces Levels of Blood Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL-Cholesterol, and Apolipoprotein-B..., Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.

Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.

The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have been found to increase blood cholesterol, and long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.

The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding an HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".

Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.

Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".

Therefore changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise are fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, but also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.

In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel on the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia in mice.

Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.

Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively

According to the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.

Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.

At the end of 3 months, blood profiles withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.

In additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.

These results indicated that the intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The time of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.

#Vegetables and Fruits Intake Regularly are Associated with A Reduced Risk of #Subtypes of #EsophagealCancer and #GastricCancer, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

The esophagus, an organ in vertebrates, is the tube that leads food from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is a medical condition that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the esophageal tissue caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

The most common types of esophageal cancer are adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Adenocarcinoma arises from the glands in the mucosa, and squamous cell carcinoma begins in flat cells lining the esophagus.

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the Cancer Genome Atlas Research Network Group (TCGA), gastric cancer can be classified into four subtypes: EBV-positive tumors, microsatellite unstable tumors (MSI), genomically stable tumors (GS), and tumors with chromosomal instability (CIN).

The stages of both subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer can be classified into
1. Stage 0,
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated deeper tissue but on the surface of the inside lining of the stomach.
2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer on the surface but have invaded into deep the inside stomach lining but are still completely inside the stomach
a. Stage IA
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1:
The spreading is not less than 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2:
The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide. b.
Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5mm (1/5 inch).
b.1. Stage IB1:
Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).
b.2. Stage IB2:
Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (1/5 inch)

3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the stomach lining.

4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the stomach lining.

5. Stage IVIn this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the stomach to distant parts of the body.

In findings of a natural whole for the prevention of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, researchers examined the association between vegetables and fruit consumption and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), and gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA).

According to the results of the Netherlands Cohort Study in 1986, 120,852 Dutch men and women aged 55-69 filled out a questionnaire on diet and other cancer risk factors, and after 16.3 years of follow-up,

* Total vegetable consumption was nonsignificantly inversely associated with EAC and ESCC risk, but not with GCA and GNCA risk.
More precisely, Significant inverse associations were observed for raw vegetables and EAC risk [RR per 25 g/day: 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68-0.98], and Brassica vegetables and GCA risk (RR per 25 g/day: 0.72, 95% CI 0.54-0.95).

* Total fruit consumption was associated with a nonsignificantly decreased EAC risk.

Particularly, citrus fruits were inversely associated with EAC and GCA risk (RRs for highest vs. lowest intake: 0.55, 95% CI 0.31-0.98 and 0.38, 95% CI 0.21-0.69, respectively).

More Profoundly, for current smokers, vegetables and possibly also fruit intake was inversely associated with ESCC and EAC risk.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Consumption of (specific groups of) vegetables and fruits may protect against subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer".

Taken altogether, regular intake of vegetables and fruits may prevent the onset of subtypes of esophageal and gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical 6-HMA Found in #BrassicaRapa Protects the Kidney by Suppressing Oxidative #Nephrotoxicity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side of the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of the kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by the poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American Physician Association, long-term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs, and rifampicin are associated with increased damage to the kidney.

And people aged over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney damage caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to levels of antioxidants.

Dr. Keiko Hosohata in the examination "Role of Oxidative Stress in Drug-Induced Kidney Injury",
Said, "Because the kidney is exposed to a larger proportion and higher concentration of drugs and toxins than other organs through the secretion of ionic drugs by tubular organic ion transporters across the luminal membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells, and through the reabsorption of filtered toxins into the lumen of the tubule, these cells are at greater risk for injury".

"In fact, drug-induced kidney injury is a serious problem in clinical practice and accounts for roughly 20% of cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) among hospitalized patients".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the nephroprotective effects of 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (6-HMA), which was isolated from the roots of B. rapa, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells and in rats with acute renal injury

The study included 16 subjects who were randomized, and 15 subjects completed all visits.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro and Vivo
* The pretreatment of LLC-PK1 cells with 6-HMA ameliorated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity caused by oxidative stress.

* The pretreatment also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and kidney stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased levels of glutathione (GSH).

* Furthermore, 6-HMA inhibited cisplatin-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in oxidation and inflammation by the binding activity of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

* Moreover, 6-HMA-administered rats showed lower levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) associated with kidney damage than cisplatin alone-treated rats in the cisplatin-induced renal injury model.

* Additionally, 6-HMA inhibited the cisplatin-induced formation of MDA and GSH depletion and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR).

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these findings indicate 6-HMA is a major active constituent from the roots of B. Rapa to have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.".
Taken altogether, Brassica rapa processed abundantly 6-HMA may be considered supplements for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, ending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Turmeric Inhibits #Psoriasis through Its Immune Modulation and Anti-Inflammatory Therapy

Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speed-up of the life cycle of skin cells, leading to cells building up rapidly on the surface of the skin.

Symptoms of psoriasis are caused by the extra skin cells forming scales and red patches can be itchy and painful.

Epidemiologically, psoriasis patches can range from a few spots or large areas. The most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, a condition that induces dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified. Researchers do not know why people with
the same health conditions in the same family, some are prone to psoriasis while others do not.

Certain risk factors such as family history, viral and bacterial infections, weakened immune systems, persistent stress, smoking, and obesity are associated with the risk of psoriasis.

Conventionally, topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of the condition, particularly in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis.

If you are using corticosteroids for the treatment of psoriasis, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis, an autoimmune and recurrent chronic inflammatory skin disorder, researchers examined a turmeric tonic as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.

The study included a total of 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were randomly allocated into two groups.

The treatment group received turmeric tonic twice a day for 9 weeks, whereas the other group received a placebo applied in the same manner.

Based on the results from the assessment of baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, the treatment group not only significantly reduced the erythema, scaling, and the duration of lesions (PASI score), but also improved the patient's quality of life. compared to a placebo.

the clinical and quality of life parameters compared to the untreated group.

Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist said, "The proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".
