Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.

With an aim to find natural food for the treatment of infectious diseases,, researchers compared the effects of rude, phenolic-rich extracts (CPREs) isolated from different sources, such as Hibiscus sabdariffa (H. sabdariffa, Roselle), Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. Rubra (B. oleracea, red cabbage) and Beta vulgaris (B. Vulgaris).

According to the tested differentiation, the administration of CPREs showed potential antibacterial and antifungal activities.

According to chemical analysis, total anthocyanins content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and other compounds found in all three CPREs demonstrated strong antimicrobial effects against pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

Hibiscus sabdariffa CPRE (HCPRE) at a dose of 50 μg/mL exhibited signs of asymmetric, wrinkled exterior surfaces, cell deformations, and loss of cell shapes against Staphylococcus aureus DSM 1104 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 43816.

The injection of CPRE also led to cell clumping, malformations, blisters, cell depressions, and diminished cell numbers.

In other words, CPRE induced the death of bacterial cells and loss of cell contents.

Taken altogether, Hibiscus sabdariffa may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The immunomodulatory activity is a process in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.
The immune system including the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

On finding a potential compound for the enhancement of the immune system, researchers examined the effects of turmeric on immunomodulating activity.

Carp (average weight: 16.37 g) selected for the study were fed by four various concentrations of curcumin (g Kg-1): 0 g [basal diet], 5 g [T5], 10 g [T10], and 15 g [T15] were fed to the carp (average weight: 16.37 g) for 8 weeks.

Furthermore, levels of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were higher in T10 or T15, compared to the control.

Moreover, groups treated with curcumin also reduced tissue oxidative stress such as malondialdehyde level was decreased significantly.

More precisely, T10 and T15 exhibited immunomodulatory activity by enhancing the expression of antioxidant genes (SOD, CAT, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) and anti-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin-10 and inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the tested subjects.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "suggest that dietary supplements of curcumin at 15 g Kg-1can significantly improve the growth performance, skin mucosal and serum antioxidant parameters, and strengthen the immunity of C. Carpio".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the improvement of immunomodulatory properties, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Hypoxia is an urgent medical emergency of deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues.

Reactive oxidative species or ROS are chemically reactive atoms containing oxygen
In other words, ROS includes a number of reactive molecules and free radicals derived from molecular oxygen, including peroxides, superoxide, hydroxyl radical, singlet oxygen, and alpha-oxygen.

Free radicals used to interchange with ROS with unstable nature are atoms with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring. Therefore, in order for them to maintain stability, free radicals must intercept or donate an electron to or from the stable atoms respectively, leading to a domino effect that can not be stopped until all outermost ring electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Long-term overexpression of free radicals compared to antioxidants can result in oxidative stress, a leading cause of protein, lipid, and cellular damage.

Believe it or not, free radical levels in a moderate amount are necessary to enhance the body's functioning, including vascular relaxation.

Balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants may be the best way to avoid the development of chronic illness associated with oxidative stress.

However, long-term expression of oxidative stress has been found to induce several chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.


Dr. RC Petersen, the lead scientist wrote, "When O2 is absent during periods of irregular hypoxia in mitochondrial energy synthesis, the generation of excess electrons can develop free radicals or excess protons can produce acid. Free radicals formed by limited O2 can damage lipids and proteins and greatly increase molecular sizes in growing vicious cycles to reduce oxygen availability even more for mitochondria during energy synthesis".


, "Further, at adequate free-radical concentrations, a reactive crosslinking unsaturated aldehyde lipid breakdown product can significantly support free-radical polymerization of lipid oils into rubbery gel-like solids and eventually even produce a crystalline lipid peroxidation with the double bond of O2".


The result clearly suggested developing free-radical inhibitors may someday be used for medical treatments in many pathologies such as cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes, infection/inflammation, and aging.

Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the inhibition of the expression of free radicals, researchers examined the effect of betanin, one of the beetroot's major components, on ROS production.

In vitro, incubation of neutrophils with betanin in the concentration range 2-500 µM showed a significant reduction of ROS production by 15-46%, depending on the ROS detection assay and increase of antioxidant capacity.

Furthermore, betanin did not affect caspase-3 activity in programming cell death, in resting neutrophils, but significantly enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activity in stimulated neutrophils.

In other words, betanin inhibited the free radical activity in initiating cytotoxicity through its antioxidant activity.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The results indicate that betanin may be responsible for the effect of beetroot products on neutrophil oxidative metabolism and its consequences".

In organophosphates (OP), a pesticide commonly utilized in agricultural and domestic use, with side effects in different body tissues, researchers conducted a joint study led by the Maragheh University of Medical Sciences, to assess whether betanin (a natural pigment) is able to mitigate some OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in primary rat hepatocytes.

According to the outcome, betanin (25μM) significantly increased cell viability, plummeted ROS formation and LPO and restored cellular GSH reservoirs.

Betanin (25μM) not only protects the body tissue against the overexpression of free radicals induced by OP but also prevents the expression of oxidative stress in the liver tissues by stimulating the production of the antioxidant enzyme from the host.

Dr. Ahmadian E, the lead scientist wrote, "The potential protective role of betanin in OPs-induced hepatotoxicity in which the mechanism appears to be inhibition of ROS formation and mitochondrial protection".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of the overexpression of ROS, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia without inducing side effects, some scientists found.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol.

In other words, people with hyperlipidemia have an elevated ratio of low-density lipoprotein/ high-density lipoprotein.


The normal and healthy ratio of healthy blood cholesterol is lower than 4/1.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 70 type 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into the ginger group and control group.

The treatment group consumed 1600 mg ginger versus 1600 mg wheat flour consumed by the placebo daily for 12 weeks.

At the end of the trial, researchers showed that the ginger treatment group exerted a significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, insulin resistance, HOMA, triglyceride, total cholesterol, CRP, and PGE₂, compared to the placebo group.

However, there were no significant differences in HDL, LD, and TNFα between the two groups.

These results clearly suggested ginger has a strong effect in improving all parameters associated with diabetic symptoms.


Dr. Arablou T in the final report said, "Ginger improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile, and reduced CRP and PGE₂ in type 2 diabetic patients".


Other researchers concerned of oxidative stress in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN)launched an investigation to examine the potential protective effect of ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome extract on hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

Diabetes rats selected for the study were given 400 or 800 mg/kg/day Z. officinale extract for six weeks orally.

Treatment with Z. officinale not only improved all diabetic symptoms but also ameliorated hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and kidney function.

In addition, Z. officinale minimized the histological alterations in the kidneys of diabetic rats

The evidence indicated Z. officinale extract significantly attenuated oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis, and enhanced antioxidant defenses in the diabetic kidney.


Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of abnormally high blood cholesterol with no side effects.

#Fennel's #Anethole Modulates the Chemo-Activity Against the Onset of Cancer, Researchers Say

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in modulating the effect of chemo drugs through its chemomodulatory activity, some scientists suggested.
The expression of fennel application in enhanced chemopreventive response was evident in animal models from the reduced tumor burden in reduced cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis and reduced percentage of tumors through some different publications.

The results were reported by several respectable institutes including Jawaharlal Nehru University and published in online medical literature.

Biochemical assays showed a significant increase in the content/activities of phase I and II enzymes especially in the case of a 6% test diet, in detoxifying poisonous compounds caused by the injection of DMBA, through significant enhancement of antioxidant activities.

Further examination also found that injection of fennel seed stimulated the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body tissue in repaired damage precipitated by peroxidation through lactate dehydrogenase activity.

Dr. Singh B, the lead author said, "A significant enhancement in the activities of antioxidant enzymes were observed especially at 4% and 6%" and "glyoxalase I(with function as an enzymatic defense against glycation) activity and the content of reduced glutathione (antioxidant) were significantly elevated".

Additionally, in the examination of the effect of fennel bioactive compound anethole in chemo modulatory activity against the onset and spread of cancer, researchers found that the application of fennel oil by inhibited the activated expression of NF-kappa B, a gene-altering and inflammation in triggering molecule in the development of various solid tumors through stimulated cancer proliferation.



Also, anethole injection reduced levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin), a cell-signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation and one of the cytokines that make up the acute phase reaction. However, at a certain stage of cancer, gene expression in promoted cancer apoptosis is alternated, and TNF changes from a cancer killer to a cancer promoter.

Additionally, with abundant fiber, fennel demonstrated a strong effect in the removal of toxins from the colon and therefore may be helpful in colon cancer prevention.
