Antioxidants are stable molecules produced by the liver or from the intake of diet sources, including foods and supplementation.
The function of antioxidants is to protect the body against oxidation induced by free radicals.

Free radicals are a normal byproduct of oxygen metabolism. Certain environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals have an unpaired electron on the outer ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stability, free radicals must donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, causing the domino reaction that can not be stopped until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals compared to antioxidants.

In other words, if the antioxidant enzymes no longer can perform the function of balancing the free radicals in the body, oxidative stress occurs.

Epidemiologically, oxidative stress has been found to cause protein, lipid, and alternation of cellular DNA, leading to the incidence of chronic illness and cancers.


Dr. V. Hajhashemi, the lead scientist in the elevation of the effects of antioxidants for disease prevention wrote, "Free radicals are produced continuously in the cells as part of normal cellular function, however, excess production might play a role in pathophysiology of many disease conditions, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis and some of the drug-induced toxicity".

And, " Many basic research studies and observational epidemiologic studies in humans suggest that antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage".


In other words, by maintaining a healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radicals, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.

Some researchers suggested, that maintaining a balanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants is the best way for good health.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined the betacyanins phenol antioxidants activity against peroxyl radicals generated from the azo-initiated oxidation of methyl linoleate in methanol and of a heterogeneous aqueous/soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomal system

In the major compound betanin, researchers found that the phytochemical, a weak retarder in methanol is an effective chain-breaking antioxidant in the liposomal model.

In other words, kinetic solvent activity and partition in lipid bilayers may affect betanin antioxidant properties.


Betanidin, another bioactive compound shows a significant effect on chain-terminating antioxidants in both models.

In ROS activity, betanidin demonstrated a stronger radical-scavenging activity compared to betanin, in terms of both radical-scavenging rates constant and stoichiometric factor.


The results suggest that betacyanins exert significant anti-ROS expression by blocking the initiation and progression and induce-termination of a free radical chain reaction through the bioactive compound betanin and betanidin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Either betanin or betanidin incorporated in liposomes with alpha-tocopherol had additive effects, supporting the partition of the pigments in the bilayer and lipoperoxyl radical reduction".


Taken together, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) epidemiologically has been found to spread to the lymph nodes or lungs. More than 90% of the head and neck cancers diagnosed are squamous carcinomas.

According to the tested differentiation, curcumin treatment of HNSCC cell lines not only interfered with RNA of Skp2, which causes cancer tumorigenesis and radiation tolerance but also induced concomitant accumulation of p21 and p27 associated with a cell cycle arrest in HPV+, HPV- cells.

Furthermore, curcumin inhibits cell viability and induces apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in the tested cell line with and without human papillomavirus (HPV+, HPV-).

Moreover, curcumin treatment of HPV+ and HPV- cells resulted in apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis and activation of caspases that play a critical role in programmed cell death.

Additionally, the inhibition of HPV+ and HPV- cells by curcumin was also found to suppress the expression of poor prognostic markers such as XIAP, and cancer survival such as cIAP1, and cIAP2.

More importantly, co-treatment of HNSCC cells with curcumin and cisplatin potentiated inhibition of cell viability and apoptotic effects.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest an important function for curcumin, acting as a suppressor of oncoprotein Skp2 in squamous cell carcinoma cells in both HPV+ and HPV- cells".

Taken together, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HNSCC, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The liver is the largest internal organ that not only filters the blood from the digestive system before passing it to other parts of the body but also plays a critical role in the production of cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Hepatic stress is a condition in which the function of the liver is partly reduced. Hepatic stress can be observed by the levels of liver stress-makers.

Liver function tests (LFTs or LFs) are used to measure the levels of liver transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in patients with liver injury, particularly, in a patient with some degree of intact liver function.

Abnormal high levels of transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) are early indications of liver damage or injury.

Oxidative stress in the liver caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.

Lauren Cooper, the author of the examines the toxic effects of an overdose of green tea extract and bodybuilding pills wrote, "Many herbal remedies and dietary supplements can also harm the liver, including some that you can easily buy online or over-the-counter in drug or health food stores".

Before treatment, CCl4 rats showed a significant induced increased serum AST and ALT levels by 2.1- and 1.2-fold, respectively, compared with the control.

CLL- and curcumin-treated rats inhibited the levels of AST but not ALT elevation induced by CCl4.

Furthermore, according to the tested assays, the peroxidation of membrane lipids in the liver was significantly prevented by CLL (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg/day) on liver tissues.

Moreover, both CLL extract and curcumin exhibited significant protection against liver injury by improving the levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione against free radicals expression in the CCl4 treated rats.

More precisely, both CLL extract and curcumin protected the liver cells against the onset of liver cellular stress by reducing the liver damage markers and inhibiting the liver oxidative stress via increased production of liver antioxidant enzymes.

Dr. Lee GH, the lead scientist said, "Our data suggested that CLL extract and curcumin protect the liver from acute CCl4-induced injury in a rodent model by suppressing hepatic oxidative stress. Therefore, CLL extract and curcumin are potential therapeutic antioxidant agents against acute hepatotoxicity".

#Ginger Intake Orally Rduces Pain and Disability of Patients with #Osteoarthritis, According to Studies

Ginger may have a potential and positive effect in ameliorating the symptoms of pain and complications of reduced quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition a type of joint disease characterized by the breaking down of joint cartilage and underlying bone due to the “wear and tear” of joints over time.


Some researchers suggested that OA is a degenerative disease characterized by “low-grade inflammation” in the cartilage and synovium, affecting the joint structure and progressive deterioration of cartilage.

According to the statistics from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% of men and 13% of women.

Epidemiological strongly suggest that obesity and overweight which have a strong impact on weight-bearing joints, the genetic preposition of a patient can make such a patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others who do not, people with a joint injury that did heal properly at a younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting or other movements and the increase in age are associated to the increased risk of the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are joint pain and stiffness.

Dr. Giuseppe Musumeci, the lead author in the study "Osteoarthritis in the XXIst Century: Risk Factors and Behaviours that Influence Disease Onset and Progression" suggested that besides the risk factors mentioned above, dietary factors also play an important role in the onset of the disease.

In the dietary aspect in the induction of OA, the research team wrote, "This diet (The Western diet) is mainly constituted by preservative and harmful substances, such as animal fat and glucose excessive concentration and lack of nutritional factors, such as vitamins and nutrient minerals essential for our body. Moreover, bad dietary habits may predispose people to obesity, which is responsible for both metabolic destroying processes affecting the cartilage and overload of the joints, especially hips and knees".

And, " Quantity and quality of nutrient intake. Low intake of vitamin D and vitamin C is a possible risk factor for knee OA, while certain food groups, such as milk and dairy products, meat, and poultry are beneficial for knee OA. Thus we could affirm that nutritional imbalance, combined with endocrine abnormalities, may be involved in the pathogenesis of OA".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis, a joint review led by the Copenhagen University Hospital, Bispebjerg, and Frederiksberg was conducted to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study was carried out by searching the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years satisfied the predetermined guidelines and criteria, including the outcomes of the reduction in pain and disability.

Out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, and only 5 five trials (593 patients) were selected for meta-analyses.

All 5 remaining studies suggested that ginger intake scored a statistically significant pain reduction.


Furthermore, the application of ginger in subjects with osteoarthritis demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability compared to the control.


However, according to the returned questionnaires from the participants, researchers surprisingly found that patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead author, launched a joint study to determine ginger powder's effects in relieving pain and inflammation in patients with osteoarthritis.

120 participants selected for the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial for knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Ginger selected group was given capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while the PG group was given capsules filled with 500 mg starch.

At the baseline, proinflammatory cytokine concentrations did not differ by group, as observed by the participant's blood sample.

After 3 months, GG showed a significant reduction of cytokines compared to the PG.

In the final report, the research team wrote, "Ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

These results reconfirming the use of ginger for the treatment of osteoarthritis in traditional medicine with no side effects

Hypertrophy is a process or condition that increases and growth of muscle cells by increasing the muscular size achieved through exercise.
Lifting weights is the most common way to increase hypertrophy.

In other words, hypertrophy is the enlargement of an organ or tissue from the increase in the size of its cells by increasing the number of contractile proteins in each muscle fiber.

There are two types of muscular hypertrophy including the growth of muscle contraction parts or myofibrillar and the increased muscle glycogen storage or sarcoplasmic.

Myofibrillar training improves strength and speed, compared to sarcoplasmic growth that sustains more energy in endurance athletic events.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a medical condition associated with the abnormal enlargement, or thickening, of the heart muscle.

The most common causes of cardiac hypertrophy are the results of hypertension or valvular disease.


The condition can also be caused by athletic hypertrophy (a condition related to exercise), valve disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM), and congenital heart disease.


The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, chest pain, and palpitation, especially during exercise.

In finding a potential compound that attenuates cardiac H9c2 cell hypertrophy, researchers examined the effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is the major product of the acid-catalyzed condensation of indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a component of extracts of Brassica food plants.


The study was conducted using an in vitro model with 1 µM angiotensin II (Ang II) in cultured rat cardiac H9c2 cells, to observe the effects of DIM on cardiac hypertrophy.

According to the tested analysis, the optimal concentration of DIM for 6, 12, and 24 h. showed a significant effect on the atrial natriuretic peptide, brain natriuretic peptide, and myosin heavy chain β mRNA expression induced by Ang II in H9c2 cells.

In other words, DIM lowers the blood pressure, promotes diuresis, natriuresis, vasodilation of the systemic and pulmonary vasculature, and reduction of circulating levels of endothelin and aldosterone and cardiac muscle contraction induced by Ang II in H9c2 cells.

Furthermore, H9c2 cells treated with DIM for 0, 15, 30, and 60 min induced by Ang II also improve the function of 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase catalytic subunit alpha-1 that regulates the activities of a number of key metabolic enzymes in protecting the cardiac cells from stresses in response to hypertrophic stimuli.

Based on the findings, Brassica food plants consist of DIM that may be used for the prevention of cardiac hypertrophy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
