#Phytochemical #Betacyanins Isolated From White-Fleshed Pitaya Peel (PPBNs) Reduce Parameters Associated With the Onset of Obesity

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive body fat accumulated over time. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese.

Believe it or not, according to the statistic provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40 percent of adults (or 93.3 million people) are obese.
The formula of the BMI indexBMI= weight (kg)/ height (m2)

The causes of obesity are easily understood. If you regularly eat and drink more calories than you needs accompanied by physical inactivity, and a lack of sleep, over time you are at an increased risk of being overweight or obese.

Please note that certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition, and the use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants, or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

Epidemiologically, obese people are associated with an increased risk of diseases and health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Some researchers suggested that by dietary changes, increased physical activity and behavior changes have been found to enhance weight loss in obesity.

Conventionally, in extremely obese subjects, prescription medications and weight-loss surgery may be the only options.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

To find a potential compound for the prevention of fat accumulation, researchers examined the effects of food that inhibits the development of obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases.

The study included betacyanins isolated from Hylocereus undatus (white-fleshed pitaya) peel applied to high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced obese mice and compared to a low-fat diet or HFD supplemented with PPBNs for 14 weeks.

According to the tested assays, all betacyanins found in white-fleshed pitaya peel (PPBNs) reduced HFD-induced parameters associated with the obesity including body weight gain, adipose tissue hypertrophy, hepatosteatosis, glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance.

Furthermore, dietary PPBNs also increased the expression levels of lipid-metabolism-related genes and decreased genes associated with glucose and lipid homeostasis.

In other words, dietary PPBNs not only protected against fat accumulation but also decreased the risk of complications of obese subjects.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "the protective effect of PPBNs might be associated with the induced fatty acid oxidation, decreased fatty acid biosynthesis, and alleviated FGF21 resistance".

Taken together, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention of obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Bioactive Ingredient 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane mRNA and Matrix Expression Against the Onset of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Colorectal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon or rectum.
Colorectal cancer is one of the slowest growth of cancer. Therefore, Most cases of colorectal cancer are discovered in the later stage, causing a high rate of mortality.

According to the study, at the advanced stage, the median survival of patients is 24 months (range 16–42). The one-year and 2-year survival rate is 65% and 25%, respectively.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum. At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, the oversized tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to persistently severe bleeding and pain.

Patients at this stage may also experience symptoms of a change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation, or consistency of the stool, that lasts longer than four weeks.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor immediately to rule out the possibility.

The exact causes of colorectal cancer are not identified. Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, aging may be one of the major causes, as most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in adults over the age of 50, and the risk increases with age.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential and natural compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer examined the diindolylmethane (DIM) effect on cyclin D1, which was aberrantly overexpressed in various cancer cells and tumors.

Cyclin D1 is a protein associated with the progression of cancer through the G1 phase of the cell cycle in cellular division.

Injection of DIM interfered with the Cyclin D1 function in the promotion of colorectal cancer proliferation, without affecting the cyclin D1 mRNA expression.

The results suggested that DIM modulated cyclin D1 expression by controlling the levels of protein synthesized from its mRNA.

In other words, DIM inhibited cyclin D1 by triggering ER stress in human colorectal cancer cells through decreasing protein synthesis and growth arrest in the G1 phase of the cell cycle.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about DIM anti-colorectal cancer properties, researchers investigated the effect of DIM on the migratory and invasive activities of the human colorectal cancer cell lines DLD-1 and HCT116.

Injection of DIM significantly inhibited the migratory ability of the DLD-1 and HCT116 cells at 24 and 48 hours.

DIM also significantly inhibited the invasion rate of the DLD-1 and HCT116 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Following DIM treatment, researchers found that DIM anti-colorectal cancer property was associated with attenuating the mRNA expression levels of urokinase receptor and matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP9) involved cancer cell adhesion and enhancing the expression of tumor-suppressive mRNA.

Furthermore, DIM significantly reduced the mRNA and protein levels of FOXM1 in the promotion of cell division or proliferation in DLD-1 and HCT116 cells.

Based on these results, Dr.Jin H, the lead scientist in the summary of the report, wrote, "DIM can influence the cell migratory and invasive properties of human colorectal cancer cells and may decrease the invasive capacity of colorectal cancer through downregulation of uPA and MMP9 mediated by suppression of the transcription factor FOXM1".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry Inhibits Proteins and Pathways Associated with the Onset of Neuroblastoma (NB) Cells, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Age-related neurological disorders or neurodegenerative diseases are the conditions of the progressive death of neurons due to aging, leading to problems with movement (called ataxias), or mental functioning including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia.

Dementia is a general term of a neurodegenerative disease that causes a decline in memory and thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities and quality of life.

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

The most common types of dementia are
* Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Over 1 million people in the US alone are currently afflicted by Alzheimer's disease because of degeneration of the hippocampus and cerebral cortex(3) of the brain where memory, language, and cognition are located.

* Absence of acetylcholine
The absence of acetylcholine is a condition caused by damage of nerves located in front of the brain, which lead to language difficulty, memory loss, concentration problem, and reduced mobile skills due to a lack of reaction in muscular activity and refection and anxiety- and depression-like behaviors.

3. Dementia due to long-term alcohol abuse
A most classic form of the condition is Korsakoff's dementia results in extremely poor short-term memory often associated with the memory loss of confabulations due to diminished processing resources and/or an encoding or retrieval deficit.

* Dementia associated with Parkinson's disease
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition that causes cognitive deficit due to the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops that facilitate cognition and parallel the motor loop, and the loss of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) dopamine (DA) neurons.

Besides aging, geographical, hereditary viral, and toxicological exposure may also correlate to the development of diseases in the elderly.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the course of continued finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of age-related neurological disorders (ANDs), researchers examined the effects of ginger used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various disease symptoms.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers examined the effect of purified cranberry proanthocyanidins (PAC-1A) on neuroblastoma (NB) cell lines.

On SMS-KCNR cells, PAC-1A caused a loss of proton motive force associated with the increase of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce cytotoxicity in the tested cell line.

Furthermore, PAC-1A 6-gingerol inhibits neuroblastoma (NB) cell lines by reducing the expression of the proteins associated with pro-survivals (Bcl-2, MCL-1, Bcl-xL) and increased levels of proteins associated with pro-apoptosis (Bax, Bad, Bid).

Moreover, pathways involved in apoptosis were also increased by the injection of PAC-1A compared to the inhibition of the expression of pathways involved in the promotion of cell cycle division.

More importantly, cyclophosphamide (CP), the chemo drug used to suppress the immune system function also exhibited by the injection of PAC-1A.

In other words, PAC-1A and CP worked synergistically to increase cytotoxicity and expression of pro-apoptotic markers, and reduce cellular antioxidants enzymes (glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) levels.

In an additional analysis of the anti-cancer activity of PAC-1A, researchers found that Additional features of PAC-1A also slow down the cancer cell cycle progression and induce cell death via TNF-family death receptor activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "PAC-1A has demonstrated the chemotherapeutic potential to treat a broad spectrum of NBs including highly malignant tumors that show resistance to standard chemotherapeutics and apoptotic stimuli".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

6-Gingerol Isolated #Ginger Exerts Liver Protective Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The functions of the liver are to filter out blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.
In other words, the liver inhibits chemical toxins and other harmful by-products such as medication before distributing the clean blood to nourish the body.

In detail, the liver also plays a critical role in bile production for the digestive system in breaking down food, and excretion of bilirubin to clear waste products, production of cholesterol for building the cell wall membrane, and vitamin D secretion as well as steroormones.
According to the statistics, provided by the World Health Organization, liver diseases affect the largest population worldwide, representing 46% of global diseases.

Out of 35 million people in the world who die of chronic diseases, 59% are liver diseases and 59% of the mortality is because of chronic diseases.

Jaundice, persistent abdominal pain and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal discomforts, particularly persistent itchy skin, dark urine color, and pale stool are some common signs and symptoms of liver problems.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of liver diseases, excessive alcohol drinking may be the major cause of liver diseases in the Western world, besides hepatitis C infection.

Dr. Radan Bruha, in the evaluation of alcoholic liver diseases, wrote, "Alcohol consumption is directly associated with liver disease mortality and accounts for elevated social and economic costs. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) may take the form of acute involvement (alcoholic hepatitis) or chronic liver disease (steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis)".

And, " The severity and prognosis of the alcohol-induced liver disease depend on the amount, pattern and duration of alcohol consumption, as well as on the presence of liver inflammation, diet, nutritional status and genetic predisposition of an individual. While steatosis is an almost completely benign disease, liver cirrhosis is associated with marked morbidity, mortality, and life expectancy shortening. The median survival of patients with advanced cirrhosis is 1-2 years. Severe acute alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is associated with mortality as high as 50%".

The results strongly suggested that excessive alcohol drinking over time will definitely cause alcoholic liver disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural remedy for improving liver functioning examined the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats.

36 female Wistar rats included in the study were divided into 4 groups: control, received a normal diet, PCOS control, received 4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and two experimental groups, received an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.

Before application of 6-gingerol, the group administrated by EV showed an increase in body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile and proinflammatory cytokines, and a decrease of antioxidant activity associated with the increase of total cholesterol (TC), low-density cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides.

However, pretreatment 6-gingerol treatments, particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, restored the alteration back to normal and improved liver in the regulation of lipid profile.

The findings suggested that 6-gingerol processed beneficial effects in PCOS rats by inhibiting oxidative stress and restoring biochemical parameters to normal decreasing the cysts in the ovaries and increasing liver functioning.

In order to reveal more information on the ginger effect on the liver, researchers also reviewed the liver protective activity of polyphenol-rich food products (e.g., chokeberry, black and green tea, blueberry, olive oil, rosemary, and ginger) from this xenobiotic hepatotoxicity and treatment of this heavy metal-induced liver damage.

Injection of polyphenols showed a strong effect in binding ions of Cd against Cd in the induction of hepatotoxicity.

Although most studies are conducted in animal models, some of them are derived from experimental models that reflect human exposure. Therefore it is safe to assume that some polyphenol-rich food products may be promising protective agents against Cd hepatotoxicity in humans, including ginger.

Taken altogether, ginger used alone or combined with other polyphenol-rich foods may be considered functional remedies for improving liver functioning with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood Tomato's Lycopene Inhibits #ProstateCancer by Decreasing PSA Levels, Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the prostate.
The prostate is a male reproductive gland that plays a critical role in the contribution of nutrients and fluid to sperm.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue before penetrating into deeper prostate gland layers to induce metastasis via blood and lymph.

At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, prostate cancer is asymptomatic.

The most common symptoms of the prostate at the later stage are frequent urination and weak or interrupted urine flow due to the tumor that affects the tube surrounded by the prostate.

In some cases, patients may experience symptoms of blood in the urine and pain due to the oversized tumor that has pressed on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells.

The new onset of erectile dysfunction is also common in patients with prostate cancer.

The causes of prostate cancer are not identified. However, the increase in aging is one of the most common risk factors as most cases of the condition are diagnosed in older adults. Approximately, 60% of all cases are diagnosed in men over 65.c

According to the statistics, in 2017, 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the disease caused the death of 4,100 men in the same year.

The 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100% compared to only 30% in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body,

Some researchers concerned that the risk of prostate cancer in the younger population suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be correlated to the rise of the disease.

Dr. Colleen Pelser, the lead scientist wrote, "Total fat and mono- and polyunsaturated fat INTAKES were not associated with the incidence of prostate cancer. Saturated fat intake was related to increased risk of advanced prostate cancer (HRQuintile 5 vs. Quintile 1 (Q1 vs. Q5)1.21; 95% CI 1.00–1.46; p-for-trend=0.03) and fatal prostate cancer".

And. "Our study suggests that the associations of fat and fatty acids differ by prostate cancer severity. Saturated fat, ALA, and EPA intakes were related to the risk of advanced or fatal prostate cancer, but not to non-advanced prostate cancer".

The results strongly suggested that if you are a high-fat diet follower, your risk of prostate cancer is increased substantially compared to a traditional diet.

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers investigated the effects of lycopene-rich tomato on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in prostate cancer patients.

The study included 79 patients with prostate cancer randomized to a nutritional intervention with either 1) tomato products containing 30 mg lycopene per day; 2) tomato products plus selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, soy isoflavones, grape/pomegranate juice, and green/black tea (tomato-plus); or 3) control diet for 3 weeks.

According to the results of the test, the tomato group showed a significant PSA decrease compared to controls.

Compared to other groups, median PSA values decreased by 1% in patients with the highest increases in plasma lycopene, selenium, and C20:5 n-3 fatty acid, compared to an 8.5% increase in the patients with the lowest increase in lycopene, selenium, and C20:5 n-3 fatty acid.

In other words, PSA decreased the most in patients with the highest increase in lycopene alone.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Three-week nutritional interventions with tomato products alone or in combination with selenium and n-3 fatty acids lower PSA in patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer".

Moreover, in the investigation of the association between tomato consumption and prostate cancer risk, researchers at Zhejiang University performed a meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate this relationship.

Geographically, tomato intake showed significant protective effects in patients of Asian origin and Oceania populations compared to other regions.

According to the total of 24 published studies with 15,099 cases, tomato intake was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer with RRs of 0.76 found in the case-control and cohort studies.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Alliin From Garlic Powder Shows a Significant Effect on #Hypertension, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension, found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.
Blood pressure change constantly depending on the activity. Persistent hypertension over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It also is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., approximately a million U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, accounting to nearly half of all adults in the United States.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications have caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Epidemiologically, family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and people with chronic kidney disease are some common risk factors involved in the increased risk of hypertension.

Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Dr. Kazim Husain wrote, "Several possible mechanisms have been proposed such as an imbalance of the central nervous system, impairment of the baroreceptors, enhanced sympathetic activity, stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, increased cortisol levels, increased vascular reactivity due to increase in intracellular calcium levels, stimulation of the endothelium to release vasoconstrictors and loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production".

And, "Loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium by angiotensin II leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production is the major contributor of alcohol-induced hypertension".

In fact, by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.

The study was carried out with rats fed a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder and control rats were fed a normal diet for 6 weeks daily.

Rats treated with a high-cholesterol diet had significantly higher blood pressure compared to the animals receiving the control diet.

Compared to the high cholesterol and control diet group, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder was significantly lower without changing the levels of serum glucose and protein in all of the rats.

The results strongly showed support for the use of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6 % allicin) for the treatment of systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic in an animal model.

Dr. Ali M the lead scientist said, "Our experimental results show that garlic may beneficially affect .....hypertension".

Taken together, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry #Extracts Induce Apoptosis of #BreastCancer Cells, According to Studies

The women's breasts are made of tissues that produce milk (glandular tissue) and fat. The size of a woman's breast is totally depending on the amount of fat in the breast.
Cancer is a class of medical conditions associated with cell growth in the specific tissue of the gland and organ.

Breast cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly due to the alternation of cell DNA that often begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced stage after colonizing the deeper layer of tissues to form a tumor through proliferation, invasive cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The most common secondary cancers spread by primary breast cancer are bone, liver, lung, and brain cancer.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

The lifetime risk of getting invasive breast cancer in the North America of a woman is 1/8.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed in the localized stage is 100%.

The exact causes of breast cancer are not identified. Epidemiologically, aging, genetic proposition, female gender, family history, history of pregnancy, dense breast tissue, and smoking are some of the most prevalent factors that are found in patients with the disease.

However, some researchers who investigated the risk of breast cancer in obese patients suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet that causes the increased incidences of obesity in the US may have a strongly negative impact to induce the onset of breast cancer in women.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead scientist wrote, "Recent decades have seen an unprecedented rise in obesity, and the health impact thereof is increasingly evident. In 2014, worldwide, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight (body mass index [BMI], 25‐29.9 kg/m2), and of these, over 600 million were obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2)".
And, "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages".

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of the efficacy of cranberry phytochemical extracts significantly inhibited human breast cancer MCF-7 cells.

According to the tested differentiation, at doses of 5 to 30mg/mL, cranberry phytochemical extracts induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner, after exposure for 4h.

Compared to the control group, cranberry phytochemical extracts at a dose of 50mg/mL exhibited an additional 25% higher ratio of apoptotic cells to total cells.

Furthermore, at doses from 10 to 50mg/mL cranberry phytochemical extracts exerted significantly arrested MCF-7 cells at G0/G1 phase.

Moreover, A constant increasing pattern of the G1/S index was observed in the cranberry extract treatment group compared to the decrease of the G1/S ratio of the control group between 10 and 24h treatment.

Additionally, according to the cell cycle division analysis, cranberry extracts induced cell cycle arrest in the G1/S in MCF-7 cells was approximately 6 times higher than that of the control group.

Based on the findings, researchers after taking other factors into account said," These results suggest that cranberry phytochemical extracts possess the ability to suppress the proliferation of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, and this suppression is at least partly attributed to both the initiation of apoptosis and the G1 phase arrest".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
