Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.
The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders(1).
According to CDC, Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million of adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions(2).
Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation(4). A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes(4a).
The most common symptoms of RA are
* The feet and joints
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associate with valgus deformities of the feet and gait due to body function in an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.
* The gait
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes a significant reduction in joint motions, joint moments, such as decreased hip flexion-extension range, hip abduction, knee flexion-extension range.
* The hands
The effects of the deformation of RA's hands can be described through the defects of bone ankylosis as a result of bone damage to the prolonged onset of the disease(12).
* The Muscle strength
The effects of muscle strength in a patient with RA may contribute to the prevalence of functional limitations physically of that can affect daily living and quality of life.
* Rheumatoid Nodules
Rheumatoid nodules, lump on the skin, closed to the joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with rheumatoid nodules.
* Conjunctival nodule
Although is rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the appearance of the nodules may exhibit the
the severity of the underlying disease.
* Morning stiffness
Morning stiffness, as a marker of inflammatory activity that reflects functional disability and pain, is a very common symptom of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.
Conventionally, there is no cure for RA. Medication is to relieve symptoms such as pain, slow the progression and improve quality of life, including disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural agent for the treatment of adjuvant rheumatic diseases, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory property of both enzyme therapy and combined therapy with cyclosporin in an animal model.
The study included rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis administered either cyclosporin A (2.5 or 5.0 mg/kg/day per os), a mixture of enzymes (Phlogenzym (PHL); 45 mg/kg twice daily intrarectally), or a combination of 2.5 mg cyclosporin A and 90 mg PHL for a period of 40 days.
According to the tested assays, the combination therapy with cyclosporin A plus PHLshowed a significantly inhibited both the inflammation and destructive arthritis-associated changes, such as serum albumin, changes in hind paw swelling and bone erosions.
Compared to the higher dose, 2.5 mg of cyclosporin A and PHL alone inhibited the disease markers to a lesser extent and a later stage of arthritis development.
In other words, the combination inhibited all parameters associated with the onset of adjuvant rheumatic diseases in a dose-dependent manner.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The results show the inhibitory effect of enzyme therapy on rat adjuvant arthritis, as well as the efficacy of a low dose of cyclosporin A given in combination with enzyme therapy, which may be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of adjuvant rheumatic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Andrographis #HydroalcoholicExtract Exerts a Strong Gastroprotective Property, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Andrographis paniculata showed to improve gastric tone and prevent gastric dysfunction through the protection of its antioxidants, the renowned institute suggested.
Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...
The gastroprotective effect is a condition involved that enhances the function of the digestive system against harmful organisms in induced chronic indigestion.
In the study of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol, aspirin, pylorus ligation, and cold restraint stress models, rats treated with rats pretreated with HAEAP (100,200,500mg/kg b. wt for 30 days) of Andrographis paniculata expressed a significant ulcer reduction, in a dose-dependent manner, according to the Bharathi Women's College.
Dr. Panneerselvam S, the lead author said, "The ulcer-preventing effect of HAEAP may partly be due to its regulating effect on H(+)K(+)ATPase activity and /or mucin preserving effects" and "The flavonoids present in the HAEAP might be responsible for the gastroprotective action probably by maintaining the antioxidants and thiol status in the gastrointestinal tract".
In support of the above differentiation, the review of a period of 1 year from 2014-2015, using semi-structured questionnaires from different traditional Bengali people having knowledge of medicinal plants, out of 49 plants under 46 genera belonging to 33 families, Andrographis paniculata is one of the most prominent plants used among the people of Southern Assam for treating digestive system disorders (DSD).
Furthermore, seed ethyl acetate, acetone, and methanol extracts of Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Wall. ex Nees has drawn a lot of scientists' attention due to the limited success of chemical anthelmintics, a group of antiparasitic drugs (levamisole, flubendazole, and thiabendazole) in reducing gastrointestinal diseases.
In animal controls, ED(50), an ethanol extract of A. paniculata at a dose of 2.90 mg/ml, and in larval development assay at ED(50) of dose 4.26 mg/ml, showed significant effects against sheep parasite, Haemonchus contortus.
Taken together, there is no doubt that Andrographis paniculata consisted of a strong gastroprotective effect against the activities of harmful organisms, including parasites, and may be used as a functional food in improving digestive functions.

#Aloe Vera Lel Extract Restores Normal Levels of Cholesterol in Diabetes, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Dietary Aloe vera improved plasma lipid profile, through enhancing antioxidant and hepatoprotective capacities, a study by a renowned institute suggested.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.
Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts for digested fat. However too much can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.
According to the joint study led by the Nanjing Agricultural University, oral administration of less than or equal to 1.88, 1.86, and 2.79 %/kg in test animals showed improved plasma lipid profile status, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective enzyme activities.
Dr. Gabriel NN, the lead author suggested, animals fed with Aloe Vera exhibited a significantly elevated high-density lipoprotein in 0.5 and 1 % Aloe/kg with no significant changes in low-density lipoprotein. After 8 weeks of treatment, the group fed dietary Aloe at 4 %/kg expressed a significantly reduced total cholesterol and triacylglycerol.
Also in an animal study of 5 treatment groups of rats (n = 7) fed with experimental diets: a normal control diet, a hypercholesterolemic diet (HD), hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + AV gel, and hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) + Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) + AV gel, the group fed with a combination of LGG and AV gel exerted a therapeutic potential to decrease cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular diseases
Furthermore, the efficacy of aloe vera in inhibited of high blood cholesterol is the result of the complex functions in restoring normal levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-and very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, through blocking altered fatty acid composition in the liver and kidney.
The most effective dose of oral administration of Aloe vera gel extract is a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight per day to STZ-induced diabetic rats.
Dietary Aloe Vera has been shown to inhibit lipid peroxidation and restore normal ratio levels of blood cholesterol in some animal studies, human trials are necessary to validate this claim.

#Celery Suppresses Symptoms of #ArthritisDiseases by Inhibiting the Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines
Kyle J. Norton
Celery may be used as natural food therapy in reducing symptoms of acute and chronic painful or inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis.
According to a recent study, Celery Seed Extract (CSE) has been found to be more effective in comparison to aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen in suppressing arthritis symptoms in a model of polyarthritis without interaction with compared medication intake.
Dr. Powanda MC, the lead researcher said, "Unlike many dietary supplements, the available data suggest that CSE does not significantly affect the p450 enzyme systems( function in interaction with medication intake) and thus is less likely to alter the metabolism of drugs the individual may be taking"
Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae, cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.
The over-the-counter (OTC) oral remedies for arthritis and rheumatism classified celery seed extracts have an effective efficacy as ibuprofen in the anti-arthritic assay without causing gastric bleeding, but the treatment ranged from almost zero to highly effective depending on a certain class of product.
In support of the above differentiation, A. graveolens (AGE) against liver oxidative stress in an adjuvant-induced arthritic rat model study found that oral administration of AGE (250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg) for 24 consecutive days in the rat model, reduced symptoms of arthritis through reduced liver oxidative stress and enhanced liver antioxidant properties.
Taking it all together, the intake of celery may be effective in ameliorated symptoms of arthritis through binding to the expression of proinflammation cytokines. But oral administrated a large number of celery supplements such as celery seed should be consulted with related field specialists.

#Herbal #AshwagandaRoot Extract Inhibits Stress Associated with Levels of Serum Cortisol, Researcher Show
Kyle J. Norton
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of the hormone cortisol and adrenaline.
The most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.
Over time unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of anxiety.
Anxiety disorder is a class of medical conditions associated with chronic worries and fear, leading to symptoms of the fast heart rate and shakiness.
Most people with anxiety may experience the feeling of nervousness in responding to events such as a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision.
According to the statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in Canada and approximately 1 in every 8 Canadians is affected by the illness. In other words, over 250,000 people in Canada suffer from anxiety.
The most common prevalent factors that induce the risk of the condition are, family history, gender (women are more likely diagnosed with the condition compared to men), chronic stress, people with traumatic life experiences and the use of substances are some prevalent risk factors of anxiety.
However, some researchers suggested moderate physical activity, mind-body practices of breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation have been found to reduce stress, a strong positive impact on anxiety.
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America wrote, "Whether, in good times or bad, most people say that stress interferes at least moderately with their lives. Chronic stress can affect your health, causing symptoms from headaches, high blood pressure, and chest pain to heart palpitations, skin rashes, and loss of sleep".
"Physical activity is a proven way to reduce stress. Regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, and improve sleep and self-esteem. Other effective methods include mind-body practices of breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation".
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In finding a potent compound for the treatment of symptoms associated with chronic stress, researchers examined the efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of Ashwagandha roots in reducing stress and anxiety in adults who were under stress.
A total of 64 subjects with a history of chronic stress included were randomized to either drug treatment group and were asked to take one capsule containing 300 mg of high-concentration full-spectrum extract from the root of the Ashwagandha plant or the placebo control group. twice a day for a period of 60 days.
Based on the results of the tested analysis, the treatment group received a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract and showed a significant reduction in scores on all the stress-assessment scales on Day 60 compared to the placebo.
The serum cortisol levels were substantially reduced in the Ashwagandha group, compared to the placebo group.
According to the patient's reports, there are no serious adverse events reported during the experimental period.
In other words, the short-term application of the Ashwagandha plant at a high concentration not only reduced the levels of c stress but also stress-induced hormone expression of anxiety.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "a high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract safely and effectively improves an individual's resistance towards stress and thereby improves self-assessed quality of life".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention of anxiety induced by chronic stress, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

#Phytochemical #Piperine Inhibits Hormones Associated with the Onset of Obesity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Piperine may be considered a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction in obese patients, some scientists suggested.
Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excess body fat accumulated in the body over time.
While overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese, a leading cause of metabolic dysfunction.
In other words, obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases which not only causes a financial burden to the healthcare system but also increases the reduction of quality of life of the patients.
Metabolic dysfunction is caused either by abnormal chemical reactions or disruption of chemical production in the body, altering the normal metabolic process.
Some researchers suggested that obesity's metabolic dysfunction may be a result of the liver or pancreas do not function properly due to fat accumulated in the organs.
There is no coincidence that the widespread obesity over the past several decades is correlated to the promotion of the Western diet. Some researchers firmly suggested that a diet rich in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods and less in fruits and vegetables and whole grains is associated with the onset of obesity.
Dr. Bortolin RC, the lead scientist in the study to examine the metabolic parameters and gut microbiota changes in rats fed with the Western diet suggested: "diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes" and "WD-fed rats developed obesity and obesity-related comorbidities independent of major alterations in gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis), whereas CAF-fed rats developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity".
The result clearly stated that long-term intake of the Western diet induces metabolic syndrome and obesity. In other words, Obesity is not the cause of metabolic dysfunction.
In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of widespread obesity-induced metabolic dysfunctions in the Western world, researchers examine the antimetabolic phytochemical Piperine isolated from the black pepper.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week trial included the assessment of the efficacy of metabolic changes versus a placebo.
In a total of 86 overweight subjects selected to the study, 41 patients (2/14 F/M; age 43.7 ± 8.5; BMI 30.3 ± 3.5 kg/m(2)) were assigned to the supplemented group and 45 (29/16; age 40.7 ± 10.2; BMI 30.0 ± 2.7) to the control group.
At the end of 8 weeks, the supplement group showed a decrease in levels of a hormone produced by adipose cells that regulates energy balance by inhibiting hunger. High levels of leptin hormone are an indication of leptin resistance, found in overweight and obese patients.
The levels of a hormone associated with the stimulated appetite increased food intake and promoted fat storage also decreased in the supplement group. The hormone ghrelin is found abundantly in overweight and obese subjects.
Furthermore, the supplement group also showed a decrease in inflammation observed by the levels of C-reactive protein and an increased resting energy expenditure significantly, compared to the placebo.
Compared to the decreased significantly levels of adiponectin in the placebo, the supplement group also showed an increase in the hormone protein that regulates glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown.
These results suggested that the supplement group demonstrates a greater chance of metabolic dysfunction compared to the placebo.
In other words, introducing piperine into the overweight and obese diet might be useful for the treatment of obesity-related inflammatory metabolic dysfunctions.
Additionally, in order to understand the effect of piperine on overweight and obese insulin resistance, researchers evaluated the bioactive chemical activity in mice feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for 13 weeks.
Before injecting the mice with piperine, researchers found that mice fed with high-fat diet displayed elevated plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels.
Administration of piperine (50 mg/kg body weight) only normalized the concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels but also increased the levels of adiponectin and inhibited the protein which plays an important role in mediating lipogenesis, fatty acid oxidation and insulin signaling in the livers of mice.
In gene observation, piperine injection also increased the expression of the carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) gene involved in the regulation of fatty acid oxidation in the liver, an indication of resist weight gain.
Dr. Choi S, the lead researcher suggested, piperine significantly decreased insulin resistance in mice fed with a high-fat diet by increasing the levels of adiponectin and activating the pathway associated with fatty acid oxidation.
Taken together, piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the protection of overweight and obese against inflammatory and metabolic dysfunctions and weight gain without inducing any side effects

#Carrots Show to Reduces Gastric/Stomach Cancer, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Carrots may have a profound and positive effect on reduced risk, progression, and treatment of gastric cancer, some scientists suggested.
Gastric cancer is a slowly developed condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly in the stomach tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of the tissue and organs.
According to the US cancer society, approximately 26000 new cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed in 2018 inducing the death of over 10,000 patients.
The risk that a man and woman will develop gastric cancer in their lifetime is 1 in 95 and 1 in 154 respectively.
The exact causes of gastric cancer are unknown, some researchers suggested that older people, males, heavy smokers, people with a family history of gastric cancer, and certain ethnic groups such as
Asian (especially Korean or Japanese), South American, or Belarusian descent are at increased prevalent risk of gastric cancer.
Interestingly, during the past several decades, the numbers of common gastric cancer are showing a tendency of receding, however, at the same time, cancer in the area where the top part of the stomach meets the lower end of the swallowing tube (esophagus) has increased rapidly.
Also, some medical conditions such as lymphoma, H. pylori bacterial infections, tumors in the digestive system, and stomach polyps are associated with the risk of the disease.
If you experiment with persistent feelings floating after eating, small meals after eating, heartburn, indigestion,... and stomach pain accompanied by general symptoms of cancer such as unexplained weight loss, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of gastric cancer.
Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a sub species of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.
In the investigation of the hypothesis of "eating carrots may play a major role in the prevention of gastric cancer", researchers at the joint study led by the J Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences conducted a medical literature review selected from the databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Persian databases like Scientific Information Database (SID) and IranMedx, those studies satisfied the guidelines and criteria showed that risk of gastric cancer reduced by 26% with the consumption of carrots.
After taking into account other co-factors, researchers warranted that the result does not show the possibility of publication bias, according to the funnel graph by comprehensive meta-analysis/2.0 software.
Although without mentioning the amount intake daily, these results showed an inverse relationship between the consumption of carrots and the risk of gastric cancer.
Furthermore, in the analysis of the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) overgrowth on the risk of gastric cancer, scientists found that injection of the gene of UreB into carrot by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation expressed a significant effect in regenerated carrot plants the expressed UreB protein accounted for 25mug/g roots in reduced expression of H. pylori.
The same application also showed a similar effect on immune response in the inhibition of infection of bacterial Helicobacter pylori in mice.
These results suggested that certain chemical compounds in carrots may consist of a strong anti-microorganism activity by protecting the plant against bacterial infection.
Therefore, UreB transgenic carrot can be potentially used as an edible vaccine for controlling H. pylori but also ameliorated the risk of the bacteria in the induction of gastric cancer.
The illustration of the above differentiation was supported by the study conducted by the Graduate School of Fudan University.
According to the evaluation of the Wuxing soup containing Daikon Radish Leaves (Green element) Daikon Radish (White element) Carrots (Red color element) Burdock Root (Yellow element) Shittake Mushroom (Black element), application of the soup to the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell line (SGC-7901) expressed a huge inhibitory activity in reduced tumor cells proliferation in a time and dose-dependent manner.
More importantly, Wuxing soup induced tumor cell death through apoptotic morphological changes and the DNA ladder of the tested SGC-7901 cells.
Additionally, used combination with calcium inhibitor Bapta AM, an intracellular calcium chelator not only exerted a strong effect in reducing the cancer apoptotic rate but also protected SGC-7901 cells in a dose-dependent manner.
Dr. Mo F, the lead author said, "Wuxing soup has an effective inhibition on cancer cells, and can induce SGC-7901 cells to apoptosis by calcium".
Taken together, carrots may be considered as a functional food in ameliorated risk and used in combination with conventional standard treatment for gastric cancer.
However, further data collection on large example size and multi centers studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of gastric cancer will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-cancer possibilities.
