Prostate cancer is a medical condition associated with cell growth disorderly in the tissue of the prostate.
The prostate is a reproductive gland in men that have the shape and size of a walnut located between the bladder and the penis found in front of the rectum.
The gland has a unique function in the making of prostate fluid, one of the components of semen.
Prostate cancer is one of the slowest-growth of cancer in men. Prostate cancer may take years to develop before affecting the patients with symptoms.
Most cases of prostate cancer are found in older men. However,
The disease also affects men before the age of 40.
Believe it or not, about 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. According to the statistics, about 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.
In the US, approximately 1,700,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. Prostate cancer also causes the death of 609,640 patients.
The 5-year survival rate for diagnosed local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%.
Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that widespread prostate cancer over the past few decades may correlate to the promotion of a high-fat diet in the US.
Dr. Amir Bagheri, the lead scientist in the cancer team wrote, "Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer with a high mortality rate".
And, "After adjustment for potential confounders, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with decreased risk of prostate cancer (highest versus lowest tertile OR:0.24; 95% CI: 0.07-0.81; trend p: 0.025). An unhealthy dietary pattern was related to increased risk of prostate cancer(highest versus lowest tertile OR:3.4; 95% CI: 1.09-10.32; trend p: 0.037)".
The findings strongly suggested that men who follow the Western diet pattern are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer compared to those who do not.
Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With an aim to find an effective compound for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers compared the cytotoxic effect of the red beetroot extract with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (Adriamycin) in the androgen-independent human prostate cancer cells (PC-3).
According to the tested assays, both doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited similarly a dose-dependent cytotoxic effect in the two cancer cell lines.
The cytotoxicity of the beetroot extract was significantly lower when compared to doxorubicin, however, the extract continued to decrease the growth rate of the PC-3 cells by 3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days at the concentration of 29 µg/ml, compared to those of doxorubicin, at the same concentration level.
In further analysis, researchers found that the anti-prostate cancer effects of beetroot extract were attributed to the presence of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent in the exhibition of cytotoxicity.
Dr. Kapadia GJ, the lead scientist suggested the beetroot extract (B) when used alone or in combination with doxorubicin (D) may process chemopreventive potentials to mitigate the toxic side-effects of the latter.
In order to reveal more information about red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) anti-cancer activity researchers examined the beetroot extract (B), approved by Food and Drug Administration and European Union as red food color E162 against cancers.
In pancreatic (PaCa), breast (MCF-7), and prostate (PC-3) tumor cells of human origin, D showed an overall positive reduction in drug concentration when combined with B in its cytotoxicity profile.
The synergistic cytotoxicity was best when the B:D ratio of 1:5 was used in PaCa cells at IC50, IC75, and IC90 dose levels.
The findings strongly supported the potential use of red beetroot extract-doxorubicin combination in treating human prostate cancer.
In other words, red beetroot extracts not only processed the potential to improve the anti-cancer effects of doxorubicin through reduced volume used in prostate cancer treatment but also inhibited the doxorubicin's adverse effects.
Taken altogether, betanin used alone or combined with other medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#PhyticExtract From Sweet Potato Proceses Anti Diabetes Activity by Promoting #Pancreatic Beta-Cell Function, Scientists Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural resource for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.
Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
Diabetes is either caused by cells in the pancreas that died off due to the immune system mistakenly attacking the sell in the pancreas or receptor sites clogged up as a result of the excess fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Researchers do not know why the immune system attacks its own tissue. Either they can explain people follow a lifelong intake of the Western diet, only some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.
There are many risk factors such as age, ethnicity, family history, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, being overweight or obese, and a sedentary lifestyle. associated with the onset of the condition, epidemiologically. However, many people with some of the risk factors have never developed diabetes.
Some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet with high amounts of saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods, and low amounts of fruits and vegetables as that of the Western diet is the most common risk factor of diabetes in the Western world.
Dr. David Hefner, in the concern of the Western diet in the risk of diabetes, wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes".
And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".
The results strongly suggested the risk of diabetes can be decreased with a change of diet pattern, from the Western diet to a healthy diet with high amounts of fruits and vegetables.
If you experience some of the belove symptoms such as increased thirst that can not be resolved by intake of liquid, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and unexplained weight loss, you may have type 2 diabetes. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate is a phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.
On finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers examined the effect of the phytic acid supplement on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
Diabetic rats were fed rodent chow with or without phytic acid supplementation for thirty days. According to the assay used for the experiment, the phytic acid supplement-treated group showed an increase in average food intake and a decrease in body weight gain compared to the diabetic and normal control groups.
Compared to other groups, the phytic supplement-treated group also exerted a downtrend in intestinal amylase activity. The spike in random blood glucose in the treatment was also lower compared to others.
Furthermore, the treatment group also displays reduced serum triglycerides and increased total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels and levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase activation the indication of improvement of insulin sensitivity.
Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were also lower inthe phytic acid supplement treated group compared to other groups.
Dr.Omoruyi FO, the lead scientist at the end of the study, wPhytic"phytic acid supplementation may be beneficial in the management of diabetes mellitus".
Additionally, researchers randomly assigned six groups of rats fed to test the anti-diabetes of phytic acid, for 3 weeks as follows:
* Groups 1 and 2 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc or without zinc respectively.
* Groups 3 and 4 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc plus phytic acid extracted from sweet potatIpomoeamea batatas) or commercial phytic acid respectively.
* Groups 5 and 6 were fed formulated diets supplemented with a phytic acid extract from sweet potato or commercial phytic acid respectively.
On the final day of the experiment, researchers found that phytic acid extract consumption from sweet potatoes and commercial phytic acid plus zinc supplements lowered blood glucose levels.
However, phytic acid supplementation showed no significant decrease in the activity of pyruvate kinase involved in the insulin stimulation of this enzyme activity, compared to the group-fed formulated diets.
Groups fed a phytic extract from sweet potato also exerted a significant increase in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the promotion of pancreatic beta-cell function, compared to the other groups.
Taken together, phytochemical phytic acid may be used for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes.

#Allicin Suppresses the growrh of #PancreaticCancer Cells and Prolongs the Survival Rate in Vivos, Researchers Show

Scientists may have found a single ingredient isolated from garlic for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Cancer of the pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a medical condition of a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas, as the cells have become cancerous and divided uncontrollably.
Most pancreatic cancers start in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) that carry pancreatic juices. Pancreatic cancers originating in the glandular tissue account for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.
At the advanced stage, cancerous cells from the pancreas may travel a distance away to exhibit secondary metastasis.
In Canada, the 5-year net survival including all stages of pancreatic cancer is 8%. In other words, 92% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die after 5 years.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, every year, approximately an estimated 55,000 adults (29,000 men and 26,000 women) in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The incidence rates are 25% higher in black people, compared to white people.
Researchers do not know the causes of the disease. However, age, gender, ethnicity, smoking habit, poor diet and a certain medical condition such as diabetes are associated with the prevalent risks of pancreatic cancer.
Some researchers suggested that pancreatic cancer is also found in high numbers in obese patients and patients with a family history of the disease, compared to others.
Dr. Silverman DT in the assessment of risk factors for pancreatic cancer, in a population-based case-control study of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in Atlanta (GA), Detroit (MI), and ten New Jersey counties from August 1986 through April 1989, including 526 incident cases and 2,153 population controls. wrote, "elevated body mass index and caloric intake had increased risk".
And, " A three-fold risk of pancreatic cancer among first-degree relatives of affected individuals was apparent. Increased risk also was associated with a family history of colon, endometrial, ovary, and breast cancer, suggesting a possible link to hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer".
Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.
In finding the natural compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the efficacy of combined treatment of the recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and allicin on pancreatic cancer.
The study includes a total of 60 C57/BL6 nude mice pancreatic cancer xenograft models randomized and assigned into four groups of 15 mice per group: control group, allicin treatment group, rIL-2 treatment group, combined treatment with allicin, and rIL-2 group.
Mice in each group were treated with saline, rIL-2, allicin, or a combination of rIL-2 and allicin by weekly i.v injection for four weeks.
Treatment with the allicin and rIL-2 group significantly suppressed the xenograft growth and prolonged survival time, compared to other groups. Truly, the combined therapy group exerted the most amounts of apoptotic cells.
The combined treatment group anti-pancreatic cancer efficacy was attributed to the activation of levels of CD4+T, in stimulating other immune cells, killing cancer cells and natural killer cells.
Furthermore, allicin and rIL-2 also increased the levels of Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), a cytokine produced by a variety of cells involved in the immune response against cancer cells, compared to other groups.
Dr. the lead researcher wrote in the final paper, "Combined treatment with allicin and rIL-2 resulted in suppression of tumor growth and prolonged survival time possibly through activation of CD4+T, CD8+T and NK cell".
Taken together, allicin isolated from garlic may be considered a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.
However, intake of allicin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of overdose toxicity.

#BlackBean Inhibits the Risk of Colitis by Decreasing the Concentrations of Lipid and Various Circulating #ProinflammatoryCytokines
Kyle J. Norton
Black bean with abundant chemical constituents and fiber may be considered as functional foods for the prevention and treatment of colitis, a renowned institute indicated.
Colitis is a medical condition of inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.
According to the joint study led by the University of Guelph, in vivo, cooked whole-bean flours, with differing phenolic compound levels and profiles, showing a completed inhibition of colitis in a mouse model.
In C57BL/6 mice fed a 20 % navy bean or black bean flour-containing diet or an isoenergetic basal diet (BD) for 2 weeks before the induction of experimental colitis via 7 d dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 2 % (w/v) in the drinking water) exposure, coincidentally, both groups exerted similarly beneficial and adverse effects in induced locally and systemically while aggravating colonic mucosal damage with unknown identity and systemic inflammation.
In the bean treatment group, the efficacy in ameliorated colitis may be a result of the inhibition of pro-inflammatory expressions, such as colonic inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-9, IFN-γ, and IL-17A) and increased anti-inflammatory IL-10.
In mice with colon inflammation triggered by high-fat diet (HD)-induced obesity, injection of black bean expressed significantly decreased the concentrations of lipid and various circulating proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 in mice with HD-induced obesity, in attenuated change associated to colon inflammation.
Furthermore, mice treated with black bean also improved antioxidant status in reduced progression
of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the induction of oxidative stress.
Dr. Yook JS, the lead researchers said, "BAB ameliorates HD-induced disorders such as obesity and colitis by improving mucosal barrier protection and reducing endotoxemia, as well as by inactivating NF-κB to decrease the production of proinflammatory cytokines".
Taken together, the black bean may be considered as a functional diet in s reduced risk of colitis in high-risk healthy subjects and treatment of patients with colitis with little or no adverse effects.

#CruciferousVegetables Process A Strong Anti-Inflammatory Effect, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Intake of cruciferous vegetables may be inversely correlated with the circulating proinflammatory levels of women.
In a total of 1,005 middle-aged Chinese women's studies, the consumption of cruciferous vegetables regularly is associated with lower circulating concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines.
Proinflammatory cytokines, also known as Interleukin (IL) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), are secreted by the immune system to protect our body from inducing fever, inflammation, tissue destruction, etc.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.
Further to the study, Sulforaphane (SFN) and Diallyl disulfide(DAFDs), the naturally occurring isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables, in the highly metastatic B16F-10 melanoma cells exhibited the induction of apoptosis in the cancer cell line, through the involvement of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin.
Dr. Pratheeshkumar P, the lead author of the study suggested, DADS induces caspase-dependent apoptosis through an induced cell death pathway in B16F-10 melanoma cells by activating...... and suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Other phytochemicals found the vegetables, such as 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), a derivative of indole-3-carbinol, also expressed anti-proinflammatory effects through interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor.
In fact, chemical compounds found in the vegetable, not only inhibited the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the expression of chronic diseases and cancers but are also involved in other aspects, such as environment airborne particulate pollutants, according to the East Campus - Laurentian University.

#Betacyanins Found in #Beetroot Induce #BladderCancer Cell Apoptosis with Cell Death Programming
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a group of medical and chronic conditions characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ in the body.
Most cases of cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of an organ. After penetrating deeper layers and colonizing the entire organ, the cancerous cells can spread to the healthy tissue of other organs through lymph and blood.
The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.
Bladder cancer occurs when cell mass in the inner lining of the bladder forms a malignant growth or tumor. Bladder cancer developed in the bladder lining has also been found to spread through the bladder wall to nearby organs such as the prostate gland in men or the uterus in women.
Bladder cancer can be classified depending on its proliferation
* Superficial types of bladder cancer
The most recurrent type of bladder cancer has a characteristic of noninvasive. These types of bladder cancer can be controlled or removed by regular cystoscopy.
* Invasive types of bladder cancer
Invasive types of bladder cancer tend to spread after beginning in cells in the lining of the bladder. These types of cancer often require surgery by removing part or the whole bladder.
The exact causes of bladder cancer are not identified. However, smoking has been found to induce a substantial risk of bladder cancer incidence.
Dr. Neal D Freedman, the lead scientist wrote, "...the population attributable risk of bladder cancer for tobacco smoking is 50–65% in men and 20–30% in women and that current cigarette smoking triples bladder cancer risk relative to never smoking".
And, "Compared to a pooled estimate of US data from cohorts initiated between 1963 and 1987, relative risks for smoking in the more recent NIH-AARP cohort were higher, with population attributable risks for women compared to those for men".
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
In finding a natural pigment for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined Betacyanins (BC) purified from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra L.) tested, alone or in combination with vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) from Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. in the proliferation rate in T24 bladder cancer cells.
According to the tested analysis,* Combination of BC and XVX exhibited a synergistic effect that inhibits proliferation in T24 cancer cells at 24 and 48 h but not after 72 h of incubation.
* The combination-induced apoptosis of T24 bladder cancer cells was observed by means of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis by increasing the expression in caspases associated with cell death programming.
The inhibition of the bladder cancer cell line was found to enhance the expression levels of the pro-apoptotic gene and inhibit anti-apoptotic and survival proteins.
Extrinsically, the administration of BC increased the activity of caspase 8, a protein associated with the induction of apoptosis.
Interestingly, the XVX, BC, and their combination induced cancer cell death without exhibiting a cytotoxic effect on normal and healthy human cells.
Based on the findings, Dr. Scarpa ES, the lead scientist said, "the efficacy and the mechanisms of the action of BC and XVX, extracted from edible plants, and suggested that a diet or a nutrition supplement, enriched with these bioactive molecules, could be used in the prevention of human bladder cancer".
Taken together, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#NavyBeans Inhibit Lipid Parameters Associated with An Increased Risk of High Blood Cholesterol, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Cholesterol is a way substance produced by the liver or from food sources that plays an important role to build strong cell membranes and producing steroid hormone and vitamin D and aiding the digestive tract in absorbing the nutrients for our body needs.
Hyperlipidemia is also one of the conditions found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome.
In a healthy individual, excess cholesterol is returned to the liver after performing the aforementioned function by high-density lipoprotein or "good cholesterol".
However, a prolonged period of overexpression of abnormal blood cholesterol due to excessive consumption of fat or reduced levels of "good cholesterol" in the bloodstream can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.
Depending on the choice of diet, your risk of high blood cholesterol can be increased or decreased.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein).
If your ratio is lower than 4, you are considered to have a healthy blood-cholesterol ratio.
Hyperlipidemia is preventable. If you have high blood cholesterol, reducing bad fat intake accompanied by an increased intake of "good cholesterol" with moderate exercise can be helpful.
More precisely, by changing to a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at a lower risk of high blood cholesterol sometimes in the future (weeks or months, depending on the levels of blood cholesterol today).
People who follow the Western diet with a high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed food and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains may have a substantially increased risk of abnormally high blood cholesterol.
According to the article "Western Diet and Heart Risk", the author wrote, "Western diets cause a third of heart attack deaths worldwide,” the Daily Mail reports. Western-style diets high in meat, fat, dairy, and salt put people at higher risk of a heart attack. According to the newspaper, a study has found that poor diet is responsible for 30% of the risk of heart disease".
The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.
In finding a dietary source for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined whether cooked navy bean powder (NBP) and/or heat-stabilized rice bran (RB) supplementation is tolerable, improves dietary fiber intake in children, and modulates lipid profiles.
The study included children aged 8 to 13 years at risk for CVD due to abnormal lipids. In other words, all participants were diagnosed with elevated cholesterol levels including total cholesterol ≥180 mg/dL and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) <60 mg/dL; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ≥100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL; or non-HDL >100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL.
Participants received muffins or a smoothie daily that included 0 g NBP or RB (control), 17.5 g NBP, 15 g RB, or a combination of 9 g NBP + 8 g RB. Fasting blood was collected at baseline and week 4.
Only 38 children completed the trial, including n = 9 control, n = 10 NBP, n = 9 RB, and n = 10 NBP + RB groups.
Additionally, participants in the intervention groups significantly increased intake of NBP and RB at week 4 (p≤.01), particularly increased fibers in NBP and NBP + RB groups from baseline to week 4.
Based on the tested assays, HDL-cholesterol was higher in NBP-group participants compared to the control at week 4.
Although other lipid parameters also showed signs of decreasing, they are insignificantly due to the
shorter duration of the experiment (4 weeks).
In other words, higher daily intakes are needed for a longer duration to induce favorable changes across multiple serum lipid parameters.
Taken together, navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
