Short-Chain Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) Found in #Herbal #Artichoke Health Benefits in the Inhibition of #Diabetes and #CardiovascularDisease

Kyle J. Norton

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS), are oligosaccharides, a molecule made up of a small group of these sugar,

Due to its nature as a natural source of sugar and low in calories, FOS may be used as an alternative sweetener as intake of FOS does not cause a spike in blood sugar.

FOS are considered prebiotics. Intake of FOS can increase the levels of good bacteria in the intestine, leading to a healthy ratio of gut microbiota.

Digestively, FOS contains high levels of soluble fiber which has been found to improve bowel function. Consumption of FOS also increased fecal bolus and the frequency of depositions, while a dose of 4-15 g/day given to healthy subjects has been found to reduce constipation.

According to the study, FOS also showed anti-toxicity, carcinogenicity, and genotoxic effects.

FOS improved mineral absorption by decreasing levels of pH in the colon, thus facilitating the absorption of mineral ions from the intestine, mainly calcium and magnesium

Furthermore, FOS has also been found in studies to decrease levels of serum cholesterol, and triacylglycerols, the lead causes of cardiovascular diseases.

By modulating the levels of phospholipids, FOS lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, inflammation, or cancer, particularly colon cancer.

In foods, FOS are increasingly included in food products and infant formulas for their prebiotic effect in stimulating the growth of nonpathogenic intestinal microflora.

In the examined the effects of chronic ingestion of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (FOS), an indigestible carbohydrate, on hepatic glucose production, insulin-mediated glucose metabolism, erythrocyte insulin binding, and blood lipids in 12 healthy volunteers selected received either 20 g FOS/d or sucrose for 4 wk in a double-blind crossover design, researchers found that the mean (+/- SEM) basal hepatic glucose production was lower after FOS than after sucrose consumption, through the effects on insulin-stimulated glucose metabolism in healthy subjects.

Taken together, artichoke processes many health benefits that may be used as a functional remedy for disease prevention in healthy subjects, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Anthocyanin-rich #Bilberry Inhibits the Active-#UlcerativeColitis, through Its Antioxidative and Anti-Inflammatory Activity

Kyle J. Norton

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) caused by the inflammation associated with the colon and rectum.
Symptoms of UC is totally depending on the severity of the disease, including diarrhea, often with blood or pus, persistent abdominal pain, rectal pain, and bleeding, particularly the inability to defecate despite the urgency.

Some patients with UC may also have symptoms of weight loss, and fatigue fever.

According to the statistics in the US, out of 1.6 million Americans with inflammatory bowel disease, 907,000 of them have ulcerative colitis.

Depending on the location, the most common types of UC can be classified into
* Acute severe ulcerative colitis is a medical emergency that requires immediate hospitalization. The condition affects the entire colon with severe acute symptoms of pain, profuse diarrhea, bleeding, and fever.

* Ulcerative proctitis is an Inflammation of the anus (rectum), inducing symptoms of rectal bleeding.

* Proctosigmoiditis is an Inflammation involved in the rectum and sigmoid colon (lower end of the colon).

The exact causes of UC are not cleared. Some researchers suggested there are a complex interaction of genetics, immune response, and environmental triggers that cause the onset of the disease.

The most common risk factors of UC include genetic preposition, autoimmune diseases, smoking, use of certain medications such as antibiotics, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested that UC may be correlated with the increase of age as the disease affected 10–30% of the population older than 60 years.

Dr. Wei-Chen, the lead scientist wrote, " Elderly patients with UC will be seen more frequently with the aging of the population and increasing incidence of UC. The management of UC in the elderly population is more complex due to comorbidities and polypharmacy".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In finding a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC), as a significant fraction of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) is not sufficiently controlled with conventional therapy or suffer from therapy-related side effects, researchers examined the anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract (ARBE) on the colon specimens obtained during an open pilot study using ARBE for the treatment of mild-to-moderate UC.

Pretreatment of ARBE inhibited the expression of IFN-γ-receptor 2 which plays a critical role in the regulation of mediated immune responses and organ-specific autoimmunity in human THP-1 monocytic cells.

After 6 weeks of treatment, ARBE treatment revealed reduced production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines including IFN-γ and TNF-α.

Furthermore, ARBE treatment featured enhanced levels of Th17-cell-specific cytokine IL-22 and immunoregulatory cytokine IL-10 by restoring the balance between Th17 and Treg cells and preventing the risk of chronic inflammation and pathogenesis of many autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Roth S, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "a molecular mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of ARBE treatment in UC patients by modulating T-cell cytokine signaling and inhibiting IFN-γ signal transduction".

In order to reveal more information about the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) property on UC, researchers analyzed the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects with an aim to explore the therapeutic potential of bilberries in the active UC.

The open pilot trial with a total follow-up of 9 weeks the effect of a daily standardized anthocyanin-rich bilberry preparation included 13 patients with mild to moderate UC.

At the end of the 6-week treatment interval, 63.4% of patients achieved remission, the primary endpoint, while 90.9% of patients showed a response.
In all patients, a decrease in total Mayo score was detected (mean: 6.5 and 3.6 at screening and week 7, respectively; p<0.001).

Fecal calprotectin levels significantly decreased during the treatment phase (baseline: mean 778 μg/g, range 192-1790 μg/g; end of treatment: mean 305 μg/g, range <30-1586 μg/g; p=0.049), including 4 patients achieving undetectable levels at end of treatment.

No serious adverse events were observed.

The finding strongly supports the regular use of standardized anthocyanin-rich bilberry preparation in UC in humans.

Dr. Biedermann L, said at the end of the experience, "These results clearly indicate a therapeutic potential of bilberries in UC. Further studies on mechanisms and randomized clinical trials are warranted".

Taken together, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of UC, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Arnica Improves All Aspects of Symptoms of Osteoarthritis, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Arnica may have a substantial and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.
Osteoarthritis (OA), a form of arthritis, is a chronic condition characterized by wear and tear on a joint due to aging, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The University of Porto Medical School suggested that one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in the knee, hip, and hand joints(3).

The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty moving the joint or joints.

The pain usually gets worse in the change of weather, at night and in the advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

Today management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.

An unhealthy diet that causes nutrient deficiency and overload, damage of cartilage, a joint injury that did not heal properly, overuse, and autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis also have potential effects on the increased prevalence of osteoarthritis.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is the process of repairing damage to the skin, tissues, organs, etc.

In a randomized, double-blind study of 204 patients to investigate the effect of ibuprofen (5%) and Arnica (50 g tincture/100 g, DER 1:20), as gel preparations in patients with radiologically confirmed and symptomatically active osteoarthritis of interphalangeal joints of hands, researchers found that after 21 days of treatment, group treated with Arnica exerted a significant effect in relieve and function of the joints of hands similar to group treated with the conventional medicine.
4.8% in the Arnica group reported some tolerate adverse effects compared to 6.1% in the group treated with ibuprofen.

After taking into account other co and con factors, Dr. the lead researcher said, "Our results confirm that this preparation of Arnica is not inferior to ibuprofen when treating osteoarthritis of the hands".

In other to confirm the effect of Arnica as a form of functional food for the treatment of osteoarthritis, scientists at the Valens Clinic for Rheumatism conducted a study of topical application of Arnica montana fresh plant gel twice daily, in 26 men and 53 women with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.

According to the study, treatment after 3 and 6 weeks demonstrated a strong improvement in the median total scores on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), used by health professionals with a proprietary set of standardized questionnaires to evaluate the condition of patients with osteoarthritis, including knee and hip, including pain, stiffness, and physical functioning of the joints.

Furthermore, in regard to the symptoms expression of osteoarthritis, the application of the herbal preparation exerted a significant reduction of pain, and stiffness, observed by the pain and stiffness score.

A score of the mean of function subscales also showed significant reductions at these time points.

The physical function subscale found in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) is considered more consistent with stronger test-retest reliability compared to the pain score with some inconsistencies across the studies.

However, local tolerate adverse effects were reported in 7.6 % of patients who attended the study with one patient with an allergic reaction.

Interestingly, at the end of the study, 87% rated the tolerability of the gel as "good" or "fairly good," and 76% would use it again.

These results indicated that topical application of Arnica montana gel for 6 weeks alleviated symptoms of osteoarthritis in all aspects and may be considered as a well-tolerated, and effective treatment of mild to moderate OA of the knee.

Taken together, as a topical herbal medicine, Arnica may be considered a functional food for attenuated symptoms and treatment of osteoarthritis.

#Phytochemical #Quercetin Isolated from #Onion Inhibits the Expression of Enzymes and Proteins Associated with Cancer Development, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Oral cancer is a medical condition of malignant cell growth in the tissue located in the oral cavity, including the tissue of the lips or the tongue, cheek lining, floor of the mouth, gums (gingiva) and the roof of the mouth (palate).

The most common types of oral cancer are
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer accounting for over 90% of all cases and arises from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.

* Verrucous carcinoma
The low-grade and rarely spread verrucous carcinoma is accounted for only approximately 5% of all cases. The cancer can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.

* Minor salivary gland cancers
The cancer originated from the salivary gland and accounted for less than 1% of all cases.

According to the statistics, approximately, 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer in 2019.

The disease also causes the death of over 9,750 patients, roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.

The grades of oral cancer are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.

The 5-year survival rate of the localized stage of oral cancer is 84%. However, If cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the overall 5-year survival rate is 65%.

The survival rate is even lower (39%) If cancer has spread to a distant part of the body,

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of oral cancer, researchers investigated the potential effects of quercetin, a principal flavonoid compound in onions' anti-oral cancer activities.

On SAS human oral cancer cells, quercetin significantly reduced wound closure of SAS cells in culture plates after 12- and 24-h treatments.
Quercetin inhibited the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 promotes cancer cell growth and proliferation and (MMP)-9 is involved in cancer cells' angiogenesis and metastasis.

Additionally, quercetin also inhibited the proteins associated with the promotion of forming new blood vessels in SAS human oral cancer cells.

Furthermore, quercetin also blocked the expression of enzymes associated with the pathogenesis of many solid tumors through its inflammatory activation.
Moreover, proteins involved in cellular interactions with the extracellular matrix that cause tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis were also inhibited by the injection of quercetin.

More importantly, quercetin also exhibited the gene expression of tumor suppression such as P53 and apoptosis.

In other words, quercetin protects the oral cells by blocking the proteins involved in the signaling expression of tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis such as Ras homolog gene family, member A (RhoA), and protein kinase C (PKC).

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#BlackBeans Improve Insulin Resistance and Enhance Anti Inflammatory Metabolic Syndrome Activity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect our body against injury and damage-induced infection.
Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that the black bean was the first domesticated growth in South America.

Black or common beans with abundant phytochemicals may be considered functional foods in attenuated pro-inflammatory expression induced by immunity during injured, a respectable institute postulated.

In a randomized, controlled, crossover trial of 12 adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) who consumed one of three meals (black bean (BB), fiber matched (FM), and antioxidant capacity matched (AM)) study, researchers found that blood sample collection before (fasting) and five hours after the meal, black bean intake group showed a significant expression of plasma antioxidant capacity and inflammatory cytokines in response to meals differences over time.

This result showed strong support for black bean intake reduced levels of oxidative stress-induced inflammation and enhanced production of antioxidants.

Dr. Reverri EJ the lead researcher said, " Inclusion of black beans with a typical Western-style meal attenuates postprandial insulin and moderately enhances postprandial antioxidant endpoints".

In other words, adding a portion of black bean may improve insulin resistance and induce antioxidant activity to modify the risk and treatment of inflammatory metabolic syndrome.

In colon inflammation triggered by high-fat diet (HD)-induced obesity in mice, mice fed with black bean showed a remarkable effect in a reduced pro-inflammatory expression such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6, by attenuating changes associated with HD-induced colon inflammation.

Additionally, black bean-fed mice also demonstrated a significant improvement of antioxidants through modulated colon mRNA expression and reduced macrophage infiltration into adipose tissue, causing inflammation.

Furthermore, Dr. the lead author expressed, " BAB ameliorates HD-induced disorders such as obesity and colitis by improving mucosal barrier protection and reducing endotoxemia, as well as by inactivating NF-κB to decrease the production of proinflammatory cytokines".

Another study in support of the efficacy of black beans in ameliorated inflammation suggested that bean diets reduced not only mRNA expression of exhibited production of colonic inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-9, IFN-γ, and IL-17A) and increased anti-inflammatory IL-10 (P< 0·05), but also systemically reduced circulating cytokines (IL-1β, TNFα, IFNγ, and IL-17A, P< 0·05) and dextran sodium sulfate-induced oxidative stress and colitis in animal model.

The findings suggested that black beans may be used as a functional food for the prevention of inflammation after body injury or damage by reduced levels of pro-inflammatory and increased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

#Ginger Enhances and Protects the Primary Sex Hormone in Males, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a pungent spice that processes the potential to increase levels of testosterone deficiency, particularly in the elderly with no side effects according to studies.
Testosterone is a steroid hormone found in humans made mostly from the testicles in men and a small amount in women's ovaries.

According to epidemiological studies, treatment for hypogonadism is on the rise, particularly in the population due to naturally reduced production of levels of testosterone other than normal aging.

Testosterone production starts to produce significantly during puberty and dip after age 30.

In males, the early onset of reduced production of levels of testosterone is associated with a highly prevalent burden of comorbid medical conditions and polypharmacy complicates compared to those of normal aging,

Also, low levels of testosterone in males are associated with the early onset of metabolic syndrome in the induction of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Conventional medicine used for the treatment in this population is found to be a unique challenge to clinicians.

Apart from normal aging, low levels of testosterone are found to induce symptoms of decreased sex drive, low energy, weight gain, the risk of depression, moodiness, loss of hair, and thinner bones.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, you may have low levels of testosterone. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Dr. Giagulli VA, in examining the complications of testosterone in men wrote, "Testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) induces several negative effects that generally involve different organs such as testis, bone, skeletal muscle, and heart, leading to a reduction in testis function, causing osteoporosis, strongly reducing muscle mass, decreasing exercise capacity and strength and facilitating heart failure".

And, " Approximately 25% of patients affected by chronic heart failure (CHF) is characterized by plasma Testosterone (T) levels below normal ranges also related to disease progression".

These results clearly suggested apart from normal aging, males with testosterone deficiency are associated with complications of many ailments.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural compound that processes a function in enhancing and protecting primary sex hormone in males examined the effects of ginger activity in enhancing testosterone production in males.

By searching the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for English language articles (full texts or abstracts) from November 1991 through August 2018 using the keywords "ginger" and "Zingiber officinale" versus "testosterone" linking the effects of ginger on testosterone researchers found that ginger supplementation, particularly in oxidative stress conditions, enhances testosterone production in males.
The mechanisms by which this occurs mainly by enhancing luteinizing hormone (LH) production in stimulating the Leydig cell production of testosterone, increasing the level of cholesterol in synthesizing male sex steroid, testosterone (T), by reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the testes.

Furthermore, the application of ginger also inhibited the expression of free radicals by promoting the activity of the antioxidant enzymes.

Ginger also normalized the blood glucose by increasing blood flow to the testes.

Moreover, ginger improved the production of testosterone by increasing testicular weight and recycling testosterone receptors.

The finding strongly supports the use of ginger in enhanced testosterone production for the treatment of diseases associated with testosterone deficiency.

In order to reveal more information about ginger in the production of testosterone by examing the
ginger effects on multiple animal models, including 60adult male Sprague Dawley rats divided into * Group A served as normal control,

* Group B received 0.3% lead acetate in drinking water,

*Group C and Group D received supplementary 0.5 and 1 gm/Kg body weight of ginger respectively along with lead acetate in drinking water.

During the experiments, co-administration with different doses of ginger showed a significant rise in the testosterone levels in the teste, compared to the lead-treated group.
Interestingly, ginger application at different doses showed no significant change in LH levels, compared to the rise in the previous ginger treatment,

These results strongly suggested there must be other compounds from ginger that exhibit the increased levels of LH that are not mentioned in both studies.

Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with testosterone deficiency.

#Nishamalaki (NA), a Combination of Curcuma longa and Emblica Officinalis Protects the Nerves Against the Onset of Diabetic Neuropathy in Diabetics

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic neuropathy is a complication of patients with diabetes associated with nerve damage, ranging from pain and numbness in your legs and feet to problems with your digestive system.
Most cases of diabetic neuropathy are involved in diabetics who have a history of hyperglycemia caused by long-term high levels of glucose in the bloodstream, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.

Diabetic neuropathy can be classified into 4 main types,.

* Peripheral neuropathy is the most common type of diabetic neuropathy, affecting the nerves that control the feet and legs first, followed by the hands and arms.

* The autonomic neuropathy that affects the nerves that control the heart, bladder, stomach, intestines, sex organs, and eyes.

* Radiculoplexus neuropathy found mostly in older patients affects nerves that control the thighs, hips, buttocks, or legs.

* Mononeuropathy or focal neuropathy also found commonly in older patients affects the nerves that control the face, middle of the body (torso), or leg.

The exact causes of diabetic neuropathy are totally depending on the type of neuropathy. However, damage to nerves and blood vessels in the affected area has been found to induce over time, uncontrolled high blood sugar.

In other words, diabetic neuropathy is preventable by keeping the blood glucose in the healthy range.

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM in the article "the best diet for diabetic neuropathy" wrote, "
(By examing) people eating different diets found that nine months or more on a strict plant-based diet appeared to remove the trans fat from their bodies (or at least their butts). Their pain, however, didn’t take nine months to get better—it got better in days"

In the explanation of the results, the researcher continued, "More likely, it was due to an improvement in blood flow. “[N]erve biopsies in diabetics with severe progressive neuropathy…have shown small vessel disease within the nerve.” There are blood vessels within our nerves that can get clogged up too. The oxygen levels in the nerves of diabetics were found to be lower than even the levels of oxygenated blood".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy researchers examined turmeric's antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory, CNS depressant effect, and antibacterial and antifungal properties.

According to the results of the experiment, turmeric inhibited the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy by improving the antioxidant in the reduction of the level of oxidative stress associated with the occurrence of the present complication.

Furthermore, turmeric also enhanced the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity against the spread of infection.

In other words, turmeric inhibited diabetic neuropathy through a number of mechanisms involved in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activity.

In order to review more information about the turmeric effect, researchers investigated Nishamalaki (NA), a combination of Curcuma longa and Emblica officinalis in the prevention of diabetic neuropathy.

The study included diabetic neuropathy in type 2 diabetic Wistar rats under treatment for 12 weeks.
