#Herbal #Angelica's Ligustilide (LIG) Inhibits d-gal-Induced CognitiveDysfunction and BrainToxicity, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

A neuroprotective effect is an event that protects the central nervous system (CNS) by relatively preserving the neuronal structure and/or function.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of CNS disorder. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered as neuro disease.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunctional, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

There are many risk factors involved in the incidence of neurological disorders, including unhealthy lifestyle, infections, genetic preposition, and physical injury.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited that causes stroke and vascular dementia.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of levels of free radicals and antioxidants caused either by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes or both.

Free radicals can be produced internally by normal cellular metabolism or from external sources such as the air we breathe, smoking. Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons on the outer ring.

In order for them to maintain stability, free radicals must either donate an electron or intercept an electron from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until the outer ring electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress has been found to be a major risk for the onset of neurological disorders in the Western world, particularly in North America.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of neurological diseases, the researchers examined the effects of Ligustilide (LIG) is a principal active ingredient of Radix Angelica Sinensis on neuroprotective activity/

The aging model mice induced by subcutaneous (S.C.) injection of d-gal once daily for 8 weeks followed by LIG (80 mg/kg) were simultaneously administered orally.

Based on the experimental results,
* LIG administration markedly improved behavioral performance of d-gal treated mice.

* LIG reduced the level of neuron stress markers MDA and increased the activity of Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase in the promotion of neurophysiology in the brain of d-gal-induced aging mice.

* Moreover, LIG significantly raised the expression of GAP-43 associated with the development and axonal regeneration and reduced cleaved caspase-3 to promote cell death and GFAP levels in brain injury in the brain of d-gal-treated mice.

Collectively, researchers said, "These results demonstrated that LIG improves d-gal-induced cognitive dysfunction and brain toxicity, which suggests that LIG may be developed as a new medicine for the treatment of age-related conditions".

Taken together, Herbal Angelica may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Serum Levels of β-Carotene and α-Carotene in the Body Are Associated Linearly with the Risk of #ERBreastCancer, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Cancer is a group of chronic and medical diseases associated with the growth of the irregular cells caused by DNA alternation.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

In the early stage, most patients with breast cancer may experience lumps on the breast or surrounding the breast.

However, breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of the breast, the breast cancer cells may travel a distance far the way to infect other healthy cells and tissue.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown, As of today, researchers cannot explain why people with the same health conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of breast cancer while others do not.

In Canada, according to the statistic, 11% of women will develop breast cancer by the time they reach 90 years of age.

Just about 20% of breast cancers in Canada are diagnosed in women under 50, while almost 30% are diagnosed in women over 70 years of age.

Believe it or not, In 2018, approximately 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S.

The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosis at the early stage is 100%. Therefore, women at a higher risk of breast cancer should examine their breasts at least once a month for preventive measures.

β-Carotene is a phytochemical in the class of Carotenes, belongings to the group of Carotenoids (tetraterpenoids), found abundantly in dark, leafy greens and red, orange and yellow fruits and vegetable.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers evaluated the associations of plasma carotenoid, retinol, tocopherol, and vitamin C concentrations and risk of breast cancer.

In a nested case-control study within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort, 1502 female incident breast cancer cases were included, with an oversampling of premenopausal (n = 582) and estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) cases (n = 462). Controls (n = 1502).

According to the tested analysis, α-carotene and β-carotene were inversely associated with risk of ER- breast cancer with the relative odds ration of 0.61 and 0.41 respectively, compared to no statistically in other analytes associated with ER- breast cancer.

Furthermore, β-carotene was a statistically significant difference between ER- and ER+ tumors.

In other words, α-carotene showed no statistical effects on ER+ breast cancer.

However, there was no statistically significant interaction between smoking, alcohol, or BMI and all investigated plasma analytes.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " higher concentrations of plasma β-carotene and α-carotene are associated with lower breast cancer risk of ER- tumors".

Taken together, β-Carotene may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of ER breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of β-Carotene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Inhibits Syndromes Associated with the Onset of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

Lung diseases are a group of medical conditions that cause the reduced function of the lung inhaling oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.

Obstructive lung diseases are condition in which the lungs are unable to expel air properly during exhalation. Diseases associated with obstruction lung diseases care asthma, bronchiectasis, COPD, and emphysema.

Most cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are found in smokers. Dr. Rafael Laniado-Laborín said, "One hundred million deaths were caused by tobacco in the 20th century, and it is estimated that there will be up to one billion deaths attributed to tobacco use in the 21st century.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is rapidly becoming a global public health crisis with smoking being recognized as its most important causative factor".

And, "There is mounting evidence that the rate of progression of COPD can be reduced when patients at risk of developing the disease stop smoking, while lifelong smokers have a 50% probability of developing COPD during their lifetime".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease, researchers examined lycopene effects on COPD on a nonrodent model.

The study included ferrets (4 groups, n = 12-16/group) exposed to a combination of tobacco carcinogen (NNK) and CS with or without consuming lycopene at low and high doses (equivalent to ∼30 and ∼90 mg lycopene/day in human, respectively) for 22 weeks.

According to tested analysis, lycopene at a high dose significantly inhibited NNK/CS-induced chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and preneoplastic lesions in the induction of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by decreasing lung growth abnormally.

Furthermore, lycopene also significantly inhibited NNK/CS-induced accumulation of total cholesterol and increased mRNA expression of critical genes related to the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) ) in the lungs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The present study has provided the first evidence linking a protective role of dietary lycopene against COPD and preneoplastic lesions to RCT-mediated cholesterol accumulation in lungs".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered an anti-COPD remedy for the prevention and treatment of UC, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#CarrotsJuice Inhibits MetabolicSyndrome Against the Onset of #CardiovascularDisease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may process a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease through their antioxidant in inhibitory lipid peroxidation, some researchers suggested.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of medical conditions associated with the damage of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis, heart failure, and stroke.
The exact causes of cardiovascular disease are unknown. Researchers suggested that there are a number of factor associated with the early onset of the disease, including being overweight, lack of physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and smoking.

Some researchers also considered some psychological factors such as depression are some prevalent risk factors that cause cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Everson-Rose SA, the lead author in the study "Psychosocial factors and cardiovascular diseases" suggested, "(a) negative emotional states, including depression, anger, hostility, and anxiety; (b) chronic and acute psychosocial stressors; and (c) social ties, social support, and social conflict are associated with cardiovascular disease, morbidity, and mortality.

Additionally, genetic preposition, unhealthy diet, and lifestyle also play an important role in the increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study by Dr. Edward Yu, the lead scientist wrote, "Diets low in trans fat, saturated fat, refined carbohydrates, and sugar-sweetened beverages and rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and sources of unsaturated fats are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Healthy lifestyle choices include smoking avoidance, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body mass index, and moderate alcohol consumption. Adherence to a combination of these healthy diet and lifestyle behaviors may prevent most vascular events".

These results firmly suggested people who follow a Western diet high in bad fats, processed and junk food, and low in fruits and vegetables are at a higher risk of CVD.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the concerns of the high prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease is attributable to a sedentary lifestyle and eating diets high in fat and refined carbohydrates while eating diets low in fruit and vegetables, researchers launched an investigation to examine the effect of carrot juice in the reduced risk of CVD.

The assessment of the study includes the calculation of the effects of consuming 16 fl oz of daily freshly squeezed carrot juice for three months on cardiovascular risk markers, such as C-reactive protein, insulin, leptin, interleukin-1α, body fat percentage, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde production.

Although drinking carrot juice did not affect the plasma cholesterol, triglycerides, Apo A, Apo B, LDL, HDL, body fat percentage, insulin, leptin, interleukin-1α, or C-reactive protein, the juice, however, decreased systolic pressure but did not influence diastolic pressure.

Further analysis also indicated drinking carrot juice significantly increased the plasma total antioxidant capacity and decreased plasma malondialdehyde production.

In other words, carrot juice has a significant effect in reducing the risk of oxidative stress by balancing the ratio of levels of antioxidants/free radicals in the body, the major cause of CVD.

Dr. Potter AS, the lead scientist said, "Drinking carrot juice may protect the cardiovascular system by increasing total antioxidant status and by decreasing lipid peroxidation independent of any of the cardiovascular risk markers".

Interestingly, in the examine whether Anthocyanins, phenolic acids, and carotenoids are the predominant phytochemicals present in purple carrots, have beneficial effects in preventing metabolic syndrome, a prevalent risk factor of cardiovascular disease, The University of Queensland conducted a study in the animal models.

Purple carrot juice attenuated or reversed all changes while β-carotene did not reduce oxidative stress, cardiac stiffness, or hepatic fat deposition.

After taking into account co and confound, the researchers suggested that the anthocyanins, the major bioactive compound from purple carrot are responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that improve glucose tolerance as well as the cardiovascular and hepatic structure and function.

Taken together, purple carrot and non-purple carrot juice with high amounts of antioxidants may be considered functional drinks for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

#Topical #Arnica Gel Exhibits Ecchymosis Healing by Enhancing Anti-Inflammatory Activity, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Arnica may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reduced expression of Ecchymosis, some scientists suggested.

The results of this efficacy were confirmed by some studies conducted by numbers of respectable institutes, including the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the University of South Florida.

Ecchymosis is a condition of discoloration of the skin as a result of bleeding underneath. In most cases, it is caused by bruising.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing the damage to the skin, tissues, organs, etc.

In order to confirm the effect of herbal Arnice activity in treatment of ecchymosis in patients who underwent rhinoplasty, the most common facial plastic surgical procedure, researchers at the joint study lead by the University of South Florida independently conducted a review of literature in databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database) from inception to September 2016, included studies that compared postoperative care methods (intervention groups) with no treatment (control group).

According to the final search of 11 trials that satisfied the criteria and guidelines with a total of 627 patients, the application of topical Arnica showed a significant effect in reduced eyelid ecchymosis during the first 7 days postoperative statistically in comparison to the control group.

However, eyelid ecchymosis during the first 24 h postoperatively was statistically decreased in the cold compression group compared to the control group.

Patients' questionnaires returned also expressed a strong satisfaction in the tapping application group than in the control group.

Also, the ratio of patient satisfaction was statistically higher in the tapping and Arnica application group than in the control group.

Additionally, the analysis also found that surgeons had a significant tendency to decrease intranasal packing in remove pain from the surgery area as the placement was found to associate with more adverse effects in terms of postoperative ecchymosis compared to non-packing.

Further differentiation to confirm the effectiveness of the combination of topical Arnica montana and Rhododendron tomentosum (Ledum palustre) in reducing postoperative ecchymosis in a select population of healthy volunteers after oculofacial surgery, researchers conducted a review examined the postoperative course of healthy volunteers using topical Arnica and Ledum after undergoing common oculofacial procedures, including blepharoplasty, browpexy, and rhinoplasty, in the hands of 4 surgeons at tertiary referral centers from July 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012, using medical records review.

A total of 27 patients (16 females, 11 males) with an age range of 18 to 70 years were included in the study.

The selected medical review showed that patients included had used topical hydrogel pads (OcuMend, Cearna Inc., Chicago, IL) containing Arnica 50 M (10) 50% and Ledum 50 M (10) applied bilaterally after surgery through postoperative day 6 at each postoperative visit.

The results of everyday progression in patients were evaluated by their respective surgeons and assigned a subjective physician-patient rating score comparing each patient's observed healing compared with expected healing if not using Arnica/Ledum.

Photographs in each examination also were recorded. The median duration of follow-up was 7 days, range from 1 to 14 days.

According to the rating of physician examined the results, the proportions of patients with markedly accelerated healing were 38.5% (5 of 13), 85.7% (6 of 7), 60.0% (12 of 20), and 51.9% (14 of 27) at POD 1 to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and overall, respectively.

The proportions of patients with accelerated healing at the same time points were 15.4% (2 of 13), 14.3% (1 of 7), 30.0% (6 of 20), and 37.0% (10 of 27), respectively.

The proportion of patients using Arnica/Ledum with markedly accelerated healing was significantly more than the proportion of those demonstrating no appreciable difference from expected at (postoperative day) POD 3 to 5 (85.7% vs. 0%, p = 0.05), POD 6 to 8 (60.0% vs. 10.0%), and overall (51.9% vs. 11.1%, p = 0.05) without inducing any adverse effects.

Dr. Lee HS, the lead author said, "The preliminary results from this study demonstrate that the combination of topical Arnica montana and Rhododendron tomentosum (Ledum palustre) may be effective in reducing postoperative ecchymosis...., after oculofacial surgery".

Taken together, topical Arnica may be considered a functional food to accelerated the healing of ecchymosis

#Herbal #Ginger's #Gingerol An Inhibitory Effect on #RetinoblastomaCells, Reserachers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a pungent spice that processes the potential to treat retinoblastoma, according to studies.
Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a rare form of cancer that rapidly developed due to the production of the immature cells of a retina. The retina, composed of many layers, is the sensory membrane that lines the inner surface of the back of the eyeball. Most cases of retinoblastoma (Rb) are found in young children.

According to the statistics, provided by the American Cancer Society, approximately 200 to 300 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in the United States. The average age of children affected by retinoblastoma is 2. The disease rarely occurs in children older than 6.

Retinoblastoma diagnosed at the early stage is curable. However, the advanced form of retinoblastoma can be life-threatening.

Epidemiological studies suggested that age and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors associated with the onset of retinoblastoma.

Some researchers suggested that children inherited gene Rb may be associated with the risk of retinoblastoma development.

Dr. Jun Yun and colleagues in examing the epidemiology and Rb1 gene of retinoblastoma said, "Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common eye cancer in children and it can be inherited".

And, "In children with the heritable genetic form of Rb, there is a mutation on chromosome 13, called the retinoblastoma 1 (Rb1) gene. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to the successful treatment of the Rb."

The results strongly suggested that the mutation gene Prevents the protein to carry the function as a negative regulator of the cell cycle, leading to the unbalance between cell growth and development, a major cause of retinoblastoma.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of retinoblastoma with no side effects by examing the gingerol anti-cancer activity on retinoblastoma cancer cells (RB355 Cell Line).

Application of gingerol exerted dose-dependent and time-dependent growth inhibitory effects against the retinoblastoma cells.

The growth inhibitory effects of gingerol were less pronounced against normal fr2 cells. In other words, ginger application inhibited the growth of retinoblastoma cells without affecting the normal epithelial fr2 cells.

Compared to the untreated control cells, gingerol-treated cells at concentrations of 25, 75, and 150 μM had drastic changes in cell morphology, including rounding and withering of cells, with disorganized cell layers, the indications of rupture of the cell membrane, and cellular damage.

Furthermore, untreated cells showed normal green fluorescence and gingerol-treated cells showed yellow/red fluorescence captured and classified by the image test.

Moreover, gingerol also displayed an inhibitory activity at a dose-dependent in the G2/M phase cell cycle arrest on RB355 retinoblastoma cells.

In-depth analysis, researchers found that the kitchen spice at concentration-dependent also inhibits the protein expressions involved in cellular functions such as cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, motility, survival, and intracellular trafficking,

Dr. Bo Meng and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Gingerol exhibits potent anticancer effects in RB355 human retinoblastoma cancer cells and these effects were mediated via apoptosis induction, cell cycle arrest, and modulation of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway".

Where PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is an intracellular signaling pathway associated with the cell division cycle.

Taken together, ginger processed abundantly bioactive compound gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of retinoblastoma, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene From #CookedTomato Exhibits Anti #Osteoporosis Induced by #Osteoclast-Mediated Bone Resorption, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoporosis is a condition associated with low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.
The disease is most common in older adults as the result of the bone made by the body can not cover the bone loss due to an increased serum of osteoclast mediator involved in bone resorption.

Consequently, the bone in osteoporotic patients becomes weak and breaks easily from a fall.
Believe it or not, in serious cases, bone can also be broken due to sneezing or minor bumps.

According to the statistics provided by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 44 million U.S. women and men aged 50 and older suffer from osteoporosis and low bone mass.

There are over 200 million women worldwide affected by osteoporosis, including one-tenth of women aged 60, one-fifth of women aged 70, two-fifths of women aged 80, and two-thirds of women aged 90.

The most common cause of osteoporosis is the reduced production of hormones, particularly estrogen in women and androgen in men due to aging or other conditions such as medical condition.

(Diseases associated with osteoporosis include rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatological conditions, steroid hormone Deficiency, primary hyperparathyroidism, diabetes, and chronic kidney and liver disease).

In older women, menopause accompanied by lower estrogen levels are found in patients with osteoporosis.

According to epidemiological studies, being a woman and being older, family history of osteoporosis, having a small frame, and structure, having ethnicity, follow a long-term calcium-deficient diet are some of the prevalent factors of disease.

However, out of the aforementioned risk factors, some researchers suggested smoking may be one of the major culprits in inducing the risk of the condition in Southeast Asain.

The research team at the University of Pennsylvania in the study of how smoking causes osteoporosis, said, ""It has been known from many epidemiological studies that smokers usually show bone loss, and their bone density is much lower than non-smokers' bone density,"

and "What we show here is that excessive formation of osteoclasts by cigarette chemicals causes bone loss".

In other words, if you are a smoker, your risk of osteoporosis is increased substantially compared to a non-smoked individual.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongs to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of osteoporosis against bone resorption, researchers examined lycopene a carotenoid commonly found in tomatoes and tomato products against osteoporosis risk.

The study included 23 healthy postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, provided blood samples at baseline and following a one-month lycopene-depletion period according to the St. Michael 's Hospital, Toronto, ON, Canada. PARTICIPANTS AND STUDY DESIGN.
According to the results of sample analysis, a one-month lycopene-depletion period diet showed a significantly decreased serum lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin, and levels of antioxidants glutathione peroxidase (GPx).
Furthermore, the lycopene restriction diet not only increased lipid and protein oxidation but also depression of levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), significantly.

These results lead to a significant increase in the levels of cross-linked N-telopeptide of type I collagen (NTx), a marker of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

In other words, tomatoes restrictive diet increased the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

In order to reveal more information about the tomato effect in osteoporosis, researchers conducted a study to determine whether lycopene would act as an antioxidant to decrease oxidative stress parameters, resulting in decreased bone turnover markers, thus reducing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

The study included 60 postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, following a 1-month washout without lycopene consumption, randomly divided into group consumed either (N = 15/group): (1) regular tomato juice, (2) lycopene-rich tomato juice, (3) tomato Lyc-O-Mato lycopene capsules, or (4) placebo capsules, twice daily for total lycopene intakes of 30, 70, 30, and 0 mg/day respectively for 4 months.

According to the blood sample collected at the end of the experiment, consumed juice or lycopene capsules treated groups for 4 months significantly increased serum lycopene compared to placebo.

Moreover, consumed juice or lycopene capsules treated groups for 4 months exerted a similar effect as the aforementioned study in significantly increasing the total serum antioxidant capacity (TAC) and decreasing lipid and protein peroxidation and NTx compared to the placebo group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The daily consumption of lycopene may be important as it acts as an antioxidant to decrease bone resorption in postmenopausal women and may, therefore, be beneficial in reducing the risk of osteoporosis".

Taken together, tomatoes and their major bioactive compound lycopene may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
