#Cranberry Increases Antixidant Capacity Agaainst Oxidativestress, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons in the outermost ring produced daily internally including cell metabolism and externally including the air we breathe and the food we eat.
Reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen without being controlled by antioxidants can induce a domino effect by stealing an electron from other molecules, leading to a continued reaction that cannot stop until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by the presence of antioxidant molecules.

Antioxidants are stable atoms produced either by the host body or by intake of dietary antioxidant-rich food.

In this cascade, free radicals overexpression induces oxidative stress. A major cause of protein, lipid, and cell damage increased risk of the early onset of many chronic diseases.

In other words, oxidative stress is an imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

The most common diseases or syndromes associated with the onset of oxidative stress are
* Aging, is a process characterized by the progressive loss of tissue and organ function due to the accumulation of RONS-induced damages.

* Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are diseases associated with involving the heart or blood vessels, including heart disease, and stroke.

* Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a class of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Most cases of COPD are caused by smoking.

* Chronic kidney disease is a medical condition that causes the gradual loss of kidney function kidney affecting filter wastes and excess fluids from the blood.

* Neurodegenerative diseases is the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, including dementia.
* Cancer is a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of cell DNA

There are many risk factors that can increase the overexpression of free radicals, including fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of cranberry products and especially cranberry juice (CJ) antioxidant activity.

According to the tested analysis on the products, the order of the number of total polyphenols that exert antioxidant activity in cranberry foods on a fresh weight basis is dried > frozen > sauce > jellied sauce. in the deceased order.

Furthermore, in the comparison of the effect of the consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and ascorbate with CJ antioxidants or without CJ (control) given to 10 normal individuals after an overnight fast, by recording the plasma antioxidant capacity, glucose, triglycerides, and ascorbate measured 6 times over 7 h after the consumption of a single 240 mL serving of the two different beverages, researchers found that* HFCS caused a slight decrease in plasma antioxidant capacity at all time points and thus inducing oxidative stress with or without ascorbate

*CJ produced an increase in plasma antioxidant capacity at all time points, particularly compared to
HFCS.

Furthermore, postprandial triglycerides-induced oxidative stress caused by HFCS were associated with the oxidative stress in HFCS treated group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Cranberries are an excellent source of high-quality antioxidants and should be examined in human supplementation studies".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#RedCabbage Processes Anti-Mammalian #Cancer Activity through Activiting the Cytototic and Inflammatory Pathways Induced Cancer Cell's DNA Damage

Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with cell growth in the tissue and organs. At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.
There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where the cancer begins.

As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact causes of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.

Genetic mutation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 are associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and the alternation of gene PTEN.that suppress the growth of tumors also increases the risk of cancers.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers Research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.

Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).

The four most common types of human cancer, occurring worldwide are
* Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.

According to statistics, In 2015, approximately 26,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 20,900 will die of it.

* Female breast cancer
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

* Colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

Colorectal cancer is a relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The disease is also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

* Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is defined as a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth which spread to distant parts of the body. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.
Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. The veggie leave is highly nutritious and cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

In finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of cancers, researchers examined, in vitro cytotoxic effects and the mode of interaction of biologically synthesized Ag and Au nanoparticles (NPs) using Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. Rubra (BOL) against HT-1080 cancer cells and bacterial cells.

According to the tested analysis,* The Ag NPs showed a stronger free radical scavenging activity in vitro compared to the Au NPs.
* Both nanoparticles (NPs) exerted cytotoxic effects mediated through nuclear morphological changes and DNA damage.

* Intracellular localization of Ag and Au NPs induced HT-1080 cancer cell apoptosis.

These results strongly suggested that the Ag and Au NPs have easily entered and accumulated into the cytosol and nucleus to activate the inflammatory and apoptosis pathways to induce damage in cancer cell DNA.

Most importantly, Ag and Au NPs showed no clear toxic effects and no nuclear abnormalities in peripheral blood cells

Taken altogether, red cabbage may be considered a functional food for the treatment of mammalian cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B Inhibits Genes Associated with the Promotion of #HeartHealth, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.

Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.

The most common symptoms of heart disease are poor appetite, weight loss, shortness of breath, sudden collapse, blood clots and stunted growth found in children.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule the risk of heart disease.

By following a healthy dietary intake, physical activity, weight management, smoking cessation, blood pressure control, and lipid management, most cases of heart disease are preventable.

Dr. Melanie Warziski Turk, in the evaluation of the risk of heart disease in women, wrote, "Because heart disease is frequently preventable, increasing awareness of personal risk and preventative measures is a key element of healthcare for women".

And, "Nurse clinicians can evaluate, educate, and counsel women regarding their risk for this pervasive disease and promote behavior changes that will decrease that risk. Research evidence supports that lifestyle behaviors are the cornerstone of heart disease prevention".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the improvement of heart health, researchers investigated the therapeutic impact of cucurbitacin I on the heart.

According to the tested assay, phenylephrine (PE)-induced muscle cell enlargement and cardiac hypertrophy was inhibited by the pretreatment of the cardiomyocytes with cucurbitacin I.

Furthermore, cucurbitacin I protect the heart connective tissues against the onset of cardiac fibrosis.

More importantly, cucurbitacin I also significantly expressed the heart muscle protective effect by inhibiting the factors associated with the increase of blood pressure.

In order to reveal more information about cucumber anti-cardiac hypertrophy, a leading cause of heart failure, researchers evaluated cucurbitacin B anti-hypertrophy and anti-fibrosis potential both in vitro and in vivo.

Selected mice induced cardiac hypertrophy after 1 week of surgery, were given cucurbitacin B treatment for 4 weeks.

At the end of the experiment, cucurbitacin B demonstrated strong anti-hypertrophy and anti-fibrosis ability evidenced by decreased heart weight, myocardial cell cross-sectional area, and interstitial fibrosis.

Additionally, the levels of heart systolic and diastolic abnormalities induced by the surgery were also moralized by the application of cucurbitacin B.

Furthermore, gene expressions induced hypertrophic and fibrotic markers, and reserved microvascular density in pressure overload-induced hypertrophic mice were also normalized by the injection of cucurbitacin B.

Taken together, cucumber and its bioactive compound cucurbitacin I and B (CuB) may be used for the improvement of heart health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Found in Tomato Improves Pancreas function in Diabetics in Vivo, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our bodies.

The effects of the pancreas on diabetes
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is the most common form of diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of acquired diabetes in adulthood is a chronic condition that affects the body metabolized glucose. In other words, most cases of type 2 diabetes are results of insulin receptors clogged-up by fat and cholesterol, leading to resist the effects of the hormone insulin that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the role of lycopene (L) on the changes occurring in estrogen receptor (ER) α-positive cells and oxidative stress markers in the pancreas of experimentally induced adult diabetic rats.

According to the results from a single dose of 50 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ), t5o induce diabetes in rats, divided into four groups: Control + corn oil, control + lycopene, diabetic + corn oil, and diabetic + lycopene.

Diabetic groups showed a higher number of proliferating Ki-67 positive cells without affecting apoptotic cell number compared to control.

In lycopene treatment groups
* Lycopene first time treated group showed with the presence of ER α-positive cells around the islets did not have any effect on any of the parameters aforementioned in diabetic groups.

* Increasing the dose and/or the duration of lycopene demonstrated the antioxidant effects on the pancreas of diabetic rats observed by lowering oxidative stress

Taken together, long-term lycopene intake may be considered supplements for the improvement of pancreas function in the diabetics, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Cleaver Enhances the Body's Antioxidant Enzymes Against Overexpression of Free Radicals, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals in the induction of oxidative stress.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as a mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stones, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers compared the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of Anthyllis vulneraria L., Fuchsia sp., Galium mollugo L., and Veronica beccabunga L.

According to the chemical analysis, the Galium mollugo polyphenol tannin, and flavonoid contents are 1.77 ± 0.05, 0.49 ± 0.04, and 0.16 ± 0.06 g/100 g dry weight) compared to those of Fuchsia species of 7.40 ± 0.8, 5.62 ± 0.7 and 0.72 ± 0.1 g/100 g dry weight and Anthyllis vulneraria (0.68 ± 0.02, 0.17 ± 0.03 and 0.45 ± 0.01 g/100 g dry weight., respectively.

More precisely, herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) showed a higher total polyphenol, tannin, and flavonoid contents than A. vulneraria but lower, compared to those of Fuchsia sp.

In other words, all antioxidant compounds found in herbal cleaver(Galium aparine) work together to exert anti-free radical activity in the stimulation of the onset of oxidative stress.

Taken together, Cleaver processed an antioxidant activity against the risk of oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel #Equeous Extract Protectrs the Gastric Function Against the Risk of Infantile Colic and Colitis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a profound and positive effect on the reduced risk of infantile colic, some scientists suggest.

Infantile colic is a reaction of the infant if episodes of crying for more than three hours a day, for more than three days a week, for three weeks in an otherwise healthy child. The condition has a strong impact on the psychological, emotional, and physical burden to parents.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

Nutrients
1. Carbohydrates
2. Fiber
3. Protein
4. Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
5. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
6. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
7. Pantothenic acid (B5)

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and side effects of phytotherapeutic agents with Matricariae recutita, Foeniculum vulgare, and Melissa officinalis in the treatment of infantile colic in a total of 93 breastfed colicky infants conducted by the John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, after a 3 day observation period, the infants randomly assigned to groups treated with the phytotherapeutic agent (PA) and the group received placebo twice a day for 1 week, researchers found that crying time in the group received PA was reduced substantially in 85.4% of subjects in compared to 48.9% subjects in placebo group against a baseline.

The PA treatment group exerted no side effects during the period of the experiment.

Based on the result, researchers suggested that PA demonstrated a significant activity within one week of application in infantile colic.

Furthermore, the St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postdoctoral Education in concerned with the side effects of 5% of infants treated with dicyclomine hydrochloride, the only pharmacological treatment for infantile colic, with substantial side effects, including death, conducted a randomized placebo-controlled trial of 125 infants, 2 to 12 weeks of age from 2 large multi-specialty clinics by assigning them to either group treated with fennel or placebo, indicated that fennel treatment group improves the crying time episodes and frequency significantly in compared to the placebo group.

According to the Wessel assay, infantile colic was reduced by 65% (40/62) in the treatment group in comparison to only 23.7% (14/59) in placebo.

Further analysis also found that the application of fennel induced a risk reduction of 41% in comparison to placebo without causing any side effects.

Although the causes of infantile colic are unknown, some researchers suggested that the results of fennel in treatment of infantile colic may be attributed to its efficacy in the hypothetical conditions catalyzed by
*Abnormal gastrointestinal function caused by imbalanced of the bacterial ratio

According to the literature reported by the Swansea University, the application of fennel essential oil has a sustainable effect in inhibiting E. coli growth, observed by disc diffusion assays and in liquid culture.

These results were illustrated by the effect of an aqueous extract of the aerial part and an aqueous extract of seed samples of fennel.

Fennel inhibited the overgrowth of Agrobacterium radiobacter pv. tumefacient, Erwinia carotovora, Pseudomonas fluorescens, andPseudomonas glycinea, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomona aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, and Bacillus cereus in maintenance integrity of digestive function.

Further differentiation also suggested that fennel has a strong impact in protecting gastric damage through significantly increased nitrite, nitrate, ascorbic acid, retinol, and beta-carotene levels.

Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead author, in the differentiation of fennel, in regard to the gastrointestinal effect, said, "Foeniculum vulgare is indicated in the treatment of spastic gastrointestinal disturbances, in some forms of chronic colitis (which resist other treatments), in dyspepsias from gastrointestinal atony, in dyspepsias with the sensation of heaviness in the stomach, and so forth. The addition of fennel to preparations containing anthraquinone components reduces the occurrence of abdominal pain often associated with this type of laxative"

* In Psychological aspect of mother such as mother’s depression, anxiety and distress during pregnancy in induction of infantile colic, although there is no direct literature to confirm the efficacy of fennel in treating syndromes of this group of women, in the study of psychological symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome, application of fennel seed was associated in decreased depression and anxiety.

Also, in stress-induced maternal anxiety and depression, the application of fennel extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight) showed a significant improvement of urinary levels of vanillyl mandelic acid(VMA) and ascorbic acid excretion levels in the measurement of potentially psychological stress in the fennel treatment group in compared to the normal group.

These results indicated that the extract of the entire plant of F. Vulgare pay has a potential effect by acting as an anti-stress agent in reducing depression and anxiety during maternity.

* In the food allergic aspect, although there are no direct studies on the expression of a fennel-improved immune response against food allergy,.

Some researchers postulated that anethole, a bioactive compound from fennel inhibited food allergy probably through enhancing the immune system's food hypersensitivity response by modulating the expression of Foxp3+ in regulated the development and function T cells and inhibition of Th2 cytokines in promoted antibodies production of immunoglobulin E (IgE), thus reducing immune system overreacts to an allergen.

Taken together, the findings suggested that fennel may be considered as a function food for treatment of infantile colic, however, a large sample size and study by multi centers are necessary to reconfirm the viability.

#Ashwagandha Protects the Beta Cells of Pancreas Against the Onset of #Diabetes by Enhancing Antioxidant Activity in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream. Insulin resistance and hyperglycemia are hallmarks of diabetes.

In other words, insulin produced by the pancreas is either blocked by the clogging-up of the insulin receptors by fat and cholesterol or the death of beta cells in the pancreas. In some cases, diabetes can also be associated with autoimmune disease, attacking the beta cells.

There are some major types of diabetes, including the best known, type 1 and 2.
* Type 1 diabetes is associated with a genetic proposition that leads to the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

* Type 2 diabetes (acquired diabetes), is a condition caused by either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or the insulin does not work properly due to dysfunction of the insulin receptors.

In pregnancy, gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes occurred during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Gestation diabetes goes away after giving birth.

However, omen with gestation diabetes is associated with a substantial risk of diabetes developing sometimes in the future.

Epidemiologically, obesity, an unhealthy lifestyle with physical inactivity are some of the most common risk factors associated with the slow onset of diabetes.

Interestingly, some researchers suggested, night shifts workers accompanied by unhealthy lifestyles are linked to a high risk of type 2 diabetes suggested, " risk of type 2 diabetes is actually higher than simply adding the individual risks associated with unhealthy lifestyle and shift work together, indicating that combining an unhealthy lifestyle with irregular night-time working adds a further risk".

"It is well-established that unhealthy lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, a poor diet, little exercise, and being overweight or obese increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Shift work, especially night shift work, has also been associated with a greater risk of type 2 diabetes".

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

With an aim to find a potent compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera (WS) on lipid peroxidation (LPO) and pancreas in type 2 diabetic rats.

The study included type 2 diabetes induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (100 mg/kg) to 2 days old rat pups pretreated by WS.

According to the tested analysis, the untreated rats' group showed significant levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) observed by reducing levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host including glutathione (GSH) contents, and by enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT).

However, injection of WS not only caused a significant decrease in blood glucose and tissue LPO levels caused by the application of STZ but also a significant increase in GSH contents, compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Furthermore, antioxidant enzymes reduced in the untreated rat such as GPx, GR, GST, SOD, and CAT were also increased compared to type 2 diabetic control rats.

Most importantly, the significant reduction in the number and size of pancreatic beta-cells in STZ rats was normalized upon the administration of WS, evident from the histopathological examination.

In other words, WS protects the cells in the pancreas against oxidation and maintains the integrity of beta cells in insulin production in type 2 diabetes rats.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "WS has shown strong free radical scavenging activity and helped in improving the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants in type 2 diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha WS may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending the results of a large example size and multicenter study.
