Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Brain ischemia is a condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain to meet metabolic demand, leading to irreversible brain damage in severe cases.
In other words, brain ischemia induced the death of neurons of the affected tissues.
Brain ischemia can be classified into
* Focal ischemia is a condition caused by damage to a specific region of the brain; and
* Global ischemia is a condition of damage that affects the wide areas of brain tissue, leading to symptoms of impairments in vision, body movement, and speaking.
Dr. Jin-Moo Lee in the study of the issues of how the brain tissue responds to ischemia, said, "The brain is particularly vulnerable to ischemia. Complete interruption of blood flow to the brain for only 5 minutes triggers the death of vulnerable neurons in several brain regions, whereas 20–40 minutes of ischemia is required to kill cardiac myocytes or kidney cells".
And, "...the brain’s intrinsic cell-cell and intracellular signaling mechanisms, normally responsible for information processing, become harmful under ischemic conditions, hastening energy failure and enhancing the final pathways underlying ischemic cell death in all tissues, including free radical production, activation of catabolic enzymes, membrane failure, apoptosis, and inflammation".
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the protection of the brain, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of Xixian Tongshuan Preparation containing Ligusticum chuanxiong, Angelica Sinensis, Carthamus tinctorius, and Panax pseudo-ginseng.
According to chemical analysis, all constituents found in the formula work synergistically to protect the neurons against damage.
Furthermore, the formula inhibited the 5 glutamate receptors, TGFR-1, and VEGFR-2 in the mediation of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce neuron death and injury.
Moreover, a single component, such as neo-complanatoside and neo-carthamin, in Xixian Tongshuan Preparation could simultaneously act on different targets to exert their neuroprotective effects.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This study explains the multi-target mechanism of anti-cerebral ischemic injury in neuroprotection at the molecular level, and provides a certain direction for the clinical application and experimental research of Xixian Tongshuan Preparation".
Taken altogether, herbal Angelica in combination with other herbal medicines may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Cleaver Promotes the #AlkalinePhosphatase Activity Associated with the Improvement of #BoneFormation, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Bone health is measured by bone mineral density which has a direct influence on the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
There are a number of bone diseases, including include osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia, osteogenesis imperfecta, marble bone disease (osteopetrosis), Paget disease of bone, and fibrous dysplasia.
And osteoporosis is the most frequent occurrence in the aging population.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by the inability of the body to produce bone to make up for bone loss, leading to the loss of bone density over a long period of time.
People with low bone density are susceptible to fracture and break from a fall due to bone weakening.
The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, low calcium intake, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and unpreventable risk factors such as aging, family history, gender, race, body frame size,... and sedentary work are associated to increase the onset of the disease.
It is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.
If you experience symptoms of lower back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck, and back pain,..., you may have osteoporosis.
Truly, bone diseases affected normal growth and development and can lead to weakness and/or deformity.
The causes of bone diseases may be associated with genetic abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disorders, infections, cancers..... and other conditions.
According to the general belief and the recommendation of health researchers, good diet and physical exercise may play an important role in skeletal mass at the end of adolescence and these bone mass remain as the conservation of it during adult life(1).
Attending normal exercise and intake of bone-enhancing food in young adult life may protect us against the risk of bone diseases as we age.
Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with the loss of bone
density, researchers investigated hot component p-hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) found abundantly in herbal cleaver effect on bone formation and an inhibitory effect on bone resorption in rat femoral tissues in vitro.
The study included diabetes rats induced bone loss by a single subcutaneous administration of STZ (6.0 mg/100 g body weight), followed by orally administered HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g body weight) once daily for 14 days.
Before treatment with HCA, STZ administration showed a significant decrease in body weight and parameters associated with diabetes, including an increase in serum glucose, triglyceride, and calcium levels.
However, the alterations were significantly prevented by the administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).
Furthermore, bone density loss was also found in the STZ-diabetic rats observed by the significantly lower calcium content in the femoral-diaphyseal and -metaphyseal tissues which were also prevented after administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g).
Moreover, the decline of the levels of Alkaline phosphatase activity associated with bone formation in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues in STZ-diabetic rats was significantly prevented after the administration of HCA (0.5 and 1.0 mg/l00 g).
Additionally, administration of HCA (0.25, 0.5, or 1.0 mg/100 g) caused a significant increase in DNA content in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal tissues that were significantly decreased in STZ-diabetic rats.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " the intake of HCA has preventive effects on bone loss in STZ-diabetic rats, and that the intake has partially restorative effects on serum biochemical findings in the diabetic state".
Taken altogether, herbal cleaver processed with a high amount of HCA may be considered an anti-bone loss remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Banana-#PeelExtract Processes Anti #OxidativeStress Activity Against the Risk of #InfectousDiseases, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Bananas may have a potential and substantial effect on balancing the levels of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, according to the studies.
Oxidative stress is a condition of imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the body, leading to the damage of cell, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA.
The causes of oxidative are either associated with overexpression of free radicals or depressed the host antioxidant enzymes.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons on the outer ring of the atom. In order for them to become balanced, they must donate or steal an electron from the stable molecules, leading to the chain of reaction which can not be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
This chain of domino effect is known as oxidation.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation.
There are 2 types of antioxidants in the human body. The antioxidants are produced by the host and antioxidants come from dietary sources.
Every day, our body is bombarded by the invasion of free radical. Believe it or not, substances include fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants, which produce harmful free radicals in our bodies.
Epidemiological studies agreed that oxidative stress is involved in several age-related conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.
Dr. Seungyoun Jung,, the lead scientist in the evaluation of a healthy diet pattern and the risk of oxidative stress suggested, "Foods rich in healthy diets—characterized by a high intake of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains as well as a low intake of saturated fat—are aggregate sources of bioactive compounds. These compounds work as components in antioxidant systems, such as superoxide dismutases or glutathione peroxidase, and may break free radical chain reactions."
These results strongly indicated a healthy diet can form a significant part in reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.
Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.
On finding a natural antioxidant ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of the diseases associated with overexpression of free radicals, researchers compared the antioxidant properties of banana (Musa paradisiaca) and Sapodilla/Chikoo (Manilkara zapota) peel extracts in chicken patties.
The chicken patties were assigned to 4 treatments viz., I. Control (meat + 2% salt), II.BHT (meat + 2% salt + 0.1% BHT), III. BPE (meat + 2% salt + 2% banana peel extract) and IV. SPE (meat + 2% salt + 2% sapodilla/chikoo peel extract).
By comparing the changes in color and lipid oxidation during 8 days of refrigerated storage (4 ± °C) in 4 groups, researchers showed that
* The average phenolic content was 550.2 and 550.8 mg gallic acid equivalent per 10 g peel in BPE and SPE respectively.
* Free radical scavenging activity was 66.9 and 67.8% in BPE and SPE respectively.
* Banana peel extract had significantly (P < 0.05) higher reducing activity (1.6) as compared to sapodilla peel extract (0.91).
* Observation on lipid oxidation showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher TBARS values used for the determination of oxidative stress in control than the three treatments.
* The increase in TBARS from the initial day of storage to the last day of storage was highest in control (514.3%)compared to BHT (387.7%), BPE (370.6%), and SPE (383.7%). Both synthetic antioxidants and natural extracts significantly decreased TBARS.
These results clearly suggested that the water extracts obtained from banana and sapodilla peel process natural antioxidants in poultry meat and meat products.
Furthermore, in examining the antioxidant activity of different Musa sp. leaves extracts of hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, researchers found that
* All the Musa sp. extracts showed moderate antibacterial activities except Musa paradisiaca with the inhibition zone ranging from 8.0 to 18.6 mm.
* Among four species ethyl acetate extracts of Musa paradisiaca showed the highest activity against tested pathogens, particularly E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and Citrobacter sp.
* The minimum inhibitory concentrations were within the value of 15.63- 250 µg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentrations were ranging from 31.25- 250 µg/mL.
* Antioxidant activity of Musa acuminate exhibited maximum activity among the r three Musa species.
Taken together, a banana may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections and diseases associated with oxidative stress.

#Lutein Found in #Avocado Inhibits Proteins and Pathways Associated with #ProstateCancer, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Avocado may be the generation of whole fruit medicine for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, some scientists found
Prostate cancer is a medical condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and can be detected during physical (rectum) exams.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissues.
At the advanced stage, as the tumor continues to grow, it may suppress the nearly healthy tissue and nerve cells leading to severe symptoms and pain.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Approximately, 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.
The most common symptoms of prostate cancer include frequent urination, weak or interrupted urine flow, or the need to strain to empty the bladder. and the urge to urine frequently at night due to the large size of the tumor that suppresses the bladder and the flow of urine.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine, blood in the seminal fluid, and pain or burning during urination caused by the tumor that breaks the nearby small veins and nerve cells.
At this stage, cancerous cells from the prostate gland can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis.
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of prostate cancer. However, the increase in age, location, and behavioral correlates are some prevalent risks of the disease onset.
According to the University of Zurich, factors that may enhance prostate cancer risk include frequent consumption of dairy products and, possibly, meat and increased physical activity, intakes of tomatoes, cruciferous vegetables, and soy are possible preventative behavioral factors.
These results indicated that by following a healthy diet with moderate exercise, the risk of prostate cancer can be reduced substantially.
Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world. It is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and is native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
With an aim to discover a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the University of the West Indies investigate the intake of dietary MUFAs from the whole fruit of avocado in the risk of prostate cancer (PCa).
The case study included 209 men 40-80 years old with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed prostate cancer and 226 cancer-free men, attending the same urology clinics.
Higher intakes of dietary MUFA were inversely related to prostate cancer. The principal source of dietary MUFA of the participants was the avocado intake. Dietary intakes of other fats were not associated with PCa.
Dr. Jackson MD, the lead author wrote in the report, "Whole-blood and dietary MUFA reduced the risk of prostate cancer. The association may be related to avocado intakes".
Researchers at the University of California agreed that the avocado is known as a rich source of monounsaturated fatty acids, for the treatment of prostate cancer, but suggested that other bioactive substances including carotenoids, which might contribute to cancer-preventive properties similar to those attributed to other fruits and vegetables.
In vitro, injection of cisplatin nephrotoxicity of avocado containing carotenoids and tocopherols inhibited the growth of both androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and androgen-independent (PC-3) prostate cancer cell lines.
Incubation of PC-3 cells with the avocado extract led to G(2)/M cell cycle arrest accompanied by an increase in p27 protein expression, a protein that regulates the cell cycle.
Lutein combined with other bioactive compounds also exerted a similar effect in inhibiting prostate cancer cell spreading, but the chemical compound alone did not reproduce the effects of the avocado extract on cancer cell proliferation.
These results strongly indicated, the avocado's anti-prostate cancer efficacy probably is associated with all bioactive compounds contained in the fruit such as monounsaturated fat, and carotenoids.
In order to illustrate the importance of the whole fruit in the inhibition of prostate cancer, researchers examined the 3 newly isolated compounds from unripe avocado and found that all 3 compounds exert significant activity against six human tumor cell lines in culture and show selectivity for human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC-3) cells with 3 being nearly as potent as adriamycin.
Dr. Lu QY, after taking into account other factors said, "Because the avocado also contains a significant amount of monounsaturated fat, these bioactive carotenoids are likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream, where in combination with other diet-derived phytochemicals they may contribute to the significant cancer risk reduction associated with a diet of fruits and vegetables".
Taken together, avocados with abundant bioactive active compounds and MUFAs may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

#BeeHoney and #RoyalJelly Inhibit the Adverse Effecys of Chemo-Drug's Nephrotoxicity, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Honey may process certain chemical compounds which have a potential effect in the reducing risk and treatment of cancers with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Cancer cells are the type of cells that can grow indefinitely compared to the normal cycle which can only survive after certain cycle division.
According to cellular biology, in a fully grown adult cell, the rate of cell proliferation is much less, and under normal circumstances and cell division in an adult can only occur when there is the need to replace cells that have been lost, damaged, or worn out.
Most cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the specific organ.
At the early stage, most cancer tumors do not induce any symptoms. However, after colonizing most tissue, the disorderly proliferative tumor can suppress the nearby tissue including nerve cells and blood vessels, causing localized pain and severe symptoms depending on the types of cancer.
Also, at this stage, malignant cells can also travel through lymph and blood to infect other healthy tissue, a distance away from the original site.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of cancer, people with a genetic preposition are at the highest risk.
Men who carry genetic mutations BRCA1, BRCA2, and HOXB13, inherited from the parents are at 70% risk of prostate cancer, and women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have an increased risk of breast cancer of over 55%.
Sadly, more than 12 percent of men with prostate cancer tested positive for hereditary mutations of cancer-causing genes, and 87% of women reported BRCA testing by one-year post-diagnosis of breast cancer.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, a joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia was conducted to examine the role of honey in modulating the development and progression of tumors or cancers.
By searching the available data online literature, researchers found that there is available evidence (some of which is very recent) with regards to the antimetastatic, antiproliferative and anticancer effects of honey in various forms of cancer.
Honey was highly cytotoxic against tumor or cancer cells, while it was non-cytotoxic to normal cells.
Honey inhibited growth and proliferation of tumors or cancers.
Application of honey inhibited carcinogenesis by modulating the molecular processes of initiation, promotion, and progression stages.
Furthermore, in the study to examine the honey and royal jelly effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in patients with cancer, researchers examined the results of patients with cancer assigned for cisplatin chemotherapy randomly divided into bee honey and royal jelly groups pretreated before the initiation and during cisplatin chemotherapeutic regimen and control group on cisplatin only and showed that* Patients on crude bee honey and royal jelly capsules showed lower serum levels of renal injury products (creatinine and urea) compared to those in the control group.
* The changes in kidney parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) lower when compared within the bee honey group before and after cisplatin treatment.
These results indicated bee honey and royal jelly as natural compounds are effective in reducing cisplatin nephrotoxicity and may offer a promising chance for clinically meaningful prevention with no side effects.
Interestingly, Dr. the lead author in the examine the overwhelming evidence of the role of diet and lifestyle in cancer risk and prevention, suggested that there is a growing interest in the search for chemopreventative or chemotherapeutic agents derived from natural products.
And, Honey is an important source of bioactive compounds derived from plants and recent years have been under intensified study for its anticancer properties.
Recently, the role of honey in targeting key hallmarks of carcinogenesis, including uncontrolled proliferation, apoptosis evasion, angiogenesis, growth factor signaling, invasion, and inflammation has been presented. in numbers of conventional research.
Taken altogether, honey may be used as a functional food for the prevention of cancers and a secondary therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers.

#Taraxasterol (TAR) Found in #Herbal #Dandelion Inhibits Proteins and Pathways Associated with the Onset and Progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Kyle J. Norton
Arthritis, one of the Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) degenerative disease, is a general term of joint inflammation, affecting over 21% of the US population.
There are over 100 different forms of arthritis and related diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the common form of arthritis involved in chronic low-grade inflammation.
Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the synovium in children aged 16 or younger.
In other words, it is an autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system attacking some of the body's own healthy cells and tissues, in this case, the immune system attacks the joint tissue in the juvenile.
that are associated with the risk of juvenile idiopathic arthritis include HLA-A. HLA-B. HLA-DPB1. HLA-DQA1. HLA-DQB1. HLA-DRB1. IL2RA. IL6, according to the National Institute of Health.
According to the statistic, the most common form of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), affects over 50,000 children in the United States alone.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.
The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.
According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.
Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.
A cross-sectional population-based study of 1042 patients with rheumatoid arthritis showed that RA patients had an increased risk of death from various causes.
Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver, and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.
In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, scientists examined taraxasterol (TAR), a bioactive active compound pentacyclic triterpenes isolated from the Chinese medicine herb Taraxacum officinale effects on rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
In Vitro and Vivo, the application of TRA significantly suppressed the proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, and IL-8 by blocking NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasomes, activators of IL-1β secretion, particularly in the joints tissues of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice.
Furthermore, the application of TRA also inhibited the enzymes involved in the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), like MMP-1 and MMP-3 in HFLS-RA in vitro, degradation of the normal tissues.
Moreover, the injection of TRA also blocked nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation via modulating inhibitors of kappa B (IκB), IκB kinase (IKK) in the control of cytokines production and cell survival and transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) to prevent the accumulation of ROS, resulting in cell death and inflammation.
Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Curcumin Found in #Turmeric Exerts Hepatoprotective Effects Aganist the Onset of LiverDiseases, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Hepatoprotection is the action including the use of a substance such as an herbal remedy to protect the liver against damage and injury.
Antihepatotoxicity is the ability that protects the liver against toxins.
Acute liver diseases in most cases are caused by drugs and long-term intake of certain medications. Most acute liver diseases can be cured if the cause is found.
Chronic liver diseases (CLD) are liver diseases that last more than 6 months. Most chronic liver diseases are caused by a genetic preposition or a variety of factors that damage the liver, including viruses and alcohol use.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases in the world affecting 25% of the general population most of them in the Western world.
Some researchers suggested that the use of substances to protect the liver may involve several mechanisms, including strengthening the liver, gastrointestinal and immune systems.
Dr. C. Girish, the lead scientist in the discussion of hepatoprotective effect, wrote, " The regulation of gastrointestinal system may improve the general well-being of the patients, as well as improvement of constipation, may prevent the absorption of harmful substances and indirectly decrease ascites (Langmead and Rampton, 2001). The protection of liver cells against toxic materials including drugs, lipid peroxidation, and free radical injury may decrease inflammation, improve liver blood flow, and ultimately help in the reduction of ascites and blood pressure (Yang et al., 2000)".
In other words, herbal medicine expressed liver protection not only by improving the blood flow to the liver but also through regulating the gastrointestinal system against the building up toxins in the induction of free radicals and suppressing the normal function of the liver, and improving the immune system against inflammation-induced the lipid oxidation.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential ingredient for the protection of liver integrity, researchers examined curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric's therapeutic potential for the treatment of liver disorders.
The application of curcumin showed liver protective activity by inhibiting the liver toxicity caused by long-term excessive alcohol drinking and acetaminophen, lindane, carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), and diethylnitrosamine.
Furthermore, curcumin also restored liver functioning in heavy metals-induced hepatotoxicities models.
In the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common cause of the chronic liver disease model, researchers examined the Bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC), a polyphenolic compound derived from the Curcumae Longae Rhizoma liver protective activity.
The study included C57BL/6J mice divided into five groups of normal (normal diet without any treatment), methionine choline-deficient (MCD)-diet (MCD diet only), MCD + silymarin (SIL) 100 mg/kg group, MCD + BDMC 100 mg/kg group, MCD + SIL 50 mg/kg + BDMC 50 mg/kg group.
BDMC protected the liver against fatty change compared to severe hepatic fatty accumulation in the MCD-diet group.
BDMC increased liver function significantly, compared to that of the loss of liver function in the MCD-diet group.
Most importantly, BDMC showed an inhibitory effect on liver lipogenesis by reducing associated gene expression caused by the MCD diet.
Moreover, combinations of BDMC with SIL had a synergistic effect against MCD-diet models.
Based on the findings, Dr. Kim SB, the lead scientist said, "Our findings indicate that BDMC has a potential suppressive effect on NAFLD. Therefore, our data suggest that BDMC may act as a novel and potent therapeutic agent against NAFLD".
Taken together, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a remedy for the improvement of liver function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
