Cancers are a class of diseases caused by the alteration of DNA that initiates healthy cells to grow disorderly and uncontrollably.
At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect healthy cells of other tissue and organs.
Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.
According to a statistic from the Canada Government, approximately 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease.
The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.
Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.
Depending on types of cancer, people with cancers may experience general and specific symptoms.
The American Cancer Society wrote, "Cancer may also cause symptoms like fever, extreme tiredness (fatigue), or weight loss. Because cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply, or they may release substances that change the way the body makes energy from food. Cancer can also cause the immune system to react in ways that produce these signs and symptoms" " Sometimes, cancer cells release substances into the bloodstream that cause symptoms that are not usually linked to cancer. For example, some cancers of the pancreas can release substances that cause blood clots in veins of the legs".
DNA alteration is the major cause of diseases.
Proliferation is a condition of rapid cell multiplication used by cancer cells to grow indefinitely.
Normal cycle multiplication has a limited cell cycle division before replacing by the new cell.
In cancer cells, the cell cycle division is unlimited
In cancer, antiproliferative activities is a process to inhibit the growth of cancer cells
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
In findings a natural whole for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napin-like polypeptide that has previously been isolated from Chinese cabbage (Brassica parachinensis) seed on leukemia (L1210) cells.
According to the tested analysis, the selected compound stimulated nitrite production by mouse peritoneal macrophages against the tested cells.
In other words, polypeptide blocks the cell cycle division activity by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation.
Furthermore, the tested compound also stimulated the immune macrophages to reduce the viability of leukemia (L1210) cells through its immunomodulatory activity.
More precisely, the heterodimeric 13.8 kDa napin-like polypeptide processes a strong anti-cancer cell proliferative property.
Taken together, cabbage contains high levels of phytochemicals which process anticancer cell proliferative activities, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Kimchi (Fematneted Cabbage) Extract Inhibits The Genes Associated with an Increased Risk of #ColorectalCancer, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Colorectum formed part of the secretory system including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaking down of certain materials in the feces into substances which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
The colon-formed part of the large intestine plays a critical role in re-absorbing fluids and processing waste products from the body for elimination.
The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon
The rectum or the part of the large intestine nearest the rectum plays a temporary storehouse for feces.
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.
Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer in a predictable way.
The disease is more common in people over the age of 50. Regular colonoscopy after the age of 50 is valuable to detect the disease in the early stage, thereby increasing the rate of survival.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer, including cancer in the colon or rectum is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States.
In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.
The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
In findings a natural whole for the prevention of cancer, researchers examined the effects of commercial kimchi (CK), standardized kimchi (SK), cancer-preventive kimchi (CPK), and anticancer kimchi (ACK), on colorectal carcinogenesis in mice.
Male BALB/c mice induced colon cancer with a single intraperitoneal injection of azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg/kg body weight) and subsequent treatment with 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days for two cycles.
According to the experimental analysis.
* Treatment with the methanolic extracts from different kimchis, particularly 1.89 g/kg of ACK, significantly increased colon length, decreased the ratio of colon weight/length and resulted in the lowest number of tumors compared with the other kimchi-treated groups.
In other words, the kimchi extract protected the colonic cells against the alternation of DNA.
* Injection of ACK was able to suppress AOM- and DSS-induced colonic mucosal damage and neoplasia.
* ACK also significantly decreased the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IFN-γ) as well as the mRNA and protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) to induce protein, lipid, and cell DNA damage.
* More importantly, kimchi extract enhanced the tumor-suppressive genes on AOM- and DSS-induced colorectal carcinogenesis in the BALB/c mice.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " The anticancer effects of ACK were particularly potent. Thus, it is possible that the health-promoting sub-ingredients added to ACK might be used to prevent colon carcinogenesis in humans".
Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti-colorectal activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Devil's Club #Extract Demonstrates Anti-Proliferative through Its Antioxidant Activity In Vitro, Reseearchers Reveal
Kyl;e J. Norton
Antioxidative activity refers to the process of the inhibition of the oxidation of proteins, lipids, DNA, or other free radicals in the induction of oxidative chain reactions.
The primary antioxidants which directly scavenge free radicals are free radical scavengers.
Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.
Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.
However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.
Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.
Diseases associated with oxidative stress are many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Devil's Club is a large shrub, genus Oplopanax, belonging to the family Aralioideae, native to the cool moist forests of western North America.
The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as Adaptogen, Antipyretic, Pain Reliever, Antitussive, and Antibacterial agent and to treat Arthritis, Diabetes, Colds, Cough, Sore throat, Chest congestion, Stomach pain, Constipation, Gall stones, Influenza, Cancer, etc.
In finding a potential compound against the onset of oxidative stress, researchers examined the anti-proliferative activity of Devil's Club, Oplopanax horridus (OH).
According to the tested analysis,
* OH extract inhibited K562, HL60, MCF7 and MDA-MB-468 cell growth with the 50% inhibition (IC(50)) estimated at 1/2700, 1/1700, 1/500 and 1/2500 dilutions.
* The combination of OH extract at 1/4000 and 1/16,000 dilutions with 0.1 microM of CAM produced additive, anti-proliferative effects on K562 cells, as did 1/2000 and 1/1000 dilutions of OH combined with 2.5 nM of PTX on MCF7, and 1/4000 dilution of OH with 1 nM of PTX on MDA-MB-468 cells.
* A combination of 1/8000 and 1/4000 dilution of OH with 0.05 microM of CAM showed strong synergistic anti-proliferative effects on HL60 cells.
* A cell-free hydroxyl radical scavenging assay estimated that OH at 1/100, 1/10, and 1/5 dilutions showed activities equivalent to 2.7, 15.7, and 25.6 microM of Trolox, respectively.
* At non-cytotoxic 1/4000 and 1/2000 dilutions, OH significantly reduced nitric oxide production by lipopolysaccharide-activated RAW 264.7 cells (p<0.001).
Taken together, Devil's Club may be considered an antioxidative stress remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #BroccoliSprouts (BS) Shows a Significant Effect on Airway Inflammatory and Physiologic Outcomes, Asthma Induced by Indoor Allergen, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Respiratory Disease is a medical condition which affects the breathing organ and tissues including Inflammatory lung disease, Obstructive lung diseases, Restrictive lung diseases, Respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing, etc.
The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.
According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.
In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages and mostly starts during childhood.
Besides episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, patients with asthma also experience symptoms of reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.
Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.
Asthma in some cases can interfere with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.
According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.
Believe it or not, African-Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, researchers examined the effect of Broccoli sprouts (BS) on airway inflammatory and physiologic outcomes, and OS in adults with asthma and allergic sensitization to an indoor allergen.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial to compare the effects of BS with placebo (alfalfa sprouts [AS]) on airway inflammation and markers of OS included 40 adults (aged 18-50 years) who were randomized to eat either (a) 100 g of BS daily or (b) 100 g of AS daily for 3 days.
According to the tested analysis,
* BS ingestion for 3 consecutive days did not reduce FeNO in asthma, despite causing a marked increase in serum SFN concentrations (21 vs 22 parts per billion, P = .76).
* Furthermore, BS administration did not induce cytoprotective antioxidant genes in either PBMCs or nasal epithelial cells,
* Moreover, BS consumption did not reduce OS and inflammatory markers or improve lung function.
In other words, short term interference of BS showed no improvement of the symptoms on asthmatic patients
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Ingestion of the whole BS for 3 days does not appear to improve eosinophilic pulmonary inflammation, inflammatory and OS biomarkers, or clinical features of asthma among atopic adults with asthma despite resulting in a marked increase in serum SFN levels."
And "However, because variability exists in the timing and methods of detection for SFN conjugate levels, it is difficult to compare systemic SFN levels across studies".
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#BlackMustard Methanol and Leaf #Extract Inhibit the Oxidative Stress Against the Onset of #Nephrotoxicity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.
The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.
Furthermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.
Nephrotoxicity is a condition associated with toxicity in the kidneys induced by chemical toxins and chemicals and medications.
Nephrotoxicity-induced kidney damage has been found in most patients with kidney failure.
Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a medical condition associated with the reduced function of the kidney due to the expression of oxidative stress in the kidney often observed by kidney oxidative stress markers.
Oxidative stress is a condition caused by either overexpression of free radicals or low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body.
In other words, the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes is the major cause of the onset of oxidative stress, leading to the damage of lipids, DNA, and protein in the cells of the host.
Free radicals are unstable and highly reactive molecules with a single electron in the outer ring.
In order for them to become stable, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept an electron from other molecules, leading to a chain reaction that cannot be stopped until the electrons on the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the oxidation induced by free radicals.
Black mustard is a spice that belongs to an annual plant cultivated for its black or dark brown seeds native to tropical regions of North Africa, temperate regions of Europe, and parts of Asia.
On finding a potential plant that processes kidney protective activity researchers examined the protective effect of the methanol extract of B. nigra leaves against D-galactosamine (D-GalN)-induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar rats.
The study included the administration of a methanol extract of B. nigra at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.wt. against D-GalN (500 mg/kg b.wt.) induced toxicity on tested rats, with silymarin used as the standard.
Compared to the control, D-GalN-induced toxicity showed a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the serum and tissue inflammatory markers in toxic rats,
However, pretreatment of The B. nigra in toxic groups (200 and 400 mg/kg b.wt.) exerted a strong (p < 0.001) reduction in the D-GalN-induced toxicity observed by the expression of biochemical parameters.
In other words, B. nigra leaf extract pretreatment protected the kidney tissue against damage induced by oxidation.
Furthermore, s the standard group treated with silymarin also showed a similar effect as of the experimental extract
Based on the findings, researchers said, "The crude methanol extract of B. nigra leaf lacks inherent toxicity and exhibits hepatic and nephroprotective effects against D-GalN-induced toxicity in Wistar rats".
Taken altogether, Black mustard may be considered a functional food for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Turmeric Inhibits #Cancer Initiation Associated with Cell Cycle Arrest and Cell Death Programming, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Cancer is a class of medical diseases caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of primary cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissues. However, at the later stage, the malignant cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluid circulation.
The 5 years of survival of early diagnosed cancer is high, some of them have a statistic of 100% such as breast cancer. However, the actual 5-year survival rate is totally depending on the type of cancer.
According to the statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, in the US, 1,735,350 new cases of cancer were diagnosed and the disease causes the death of 609,640 people in 2018.
The most common cancer in the US, in 2018 are breast cancer followed by lung and bronchus cancer, prostate cancer, colon, and rectum cancer.
Believe it or not, over 1/3 of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes.
Most cancers share the common symptoms of gastrointestinal discomforts, such as nausea vomiting, fatigue unintended weight loss, and loss of appetite accompanied by specific symptoms depending on the type and grade of cancer.
The exact causes of cancer are not identified. However, according to epidemiological studies most common risk factors associated with cancer onset are aging, lifestyle, family history, and race.
Some researchers suggested that the introduction of a Western diet over the past few decades may be one of the major factors that cause the rise of cancer.
The Global News the examined the risk of cancer in people who follow the Western diet and wrote, "Published in the journal JAMA Oncology, the study followed more than 120,000 adults over 26 years and found that inflammation is a potential link between diet and cancer development. Researchers found a 44-per-cent risk increase for men, and 22-per-cent for women who consumed a pro-inflammatory diet (even after adjusting for other factors, such as high body mass index and decreased physical activity)".
In other words, the risk of cancer is many folds higher in people who follow the long-term Western diet.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects, researchers evaluated the anticancer activity of Curcuma caesia Roxb. (Black turmeric), used as a spice, food preservative, and coloring agent commonly in the Indian subcontinent.
According to the total antioxidant activity (TAO) method, among all the extracts of dried C. caesia rhizome viz- hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water, hexane Rhizome Extract (HRE) was found to possess remarkable antioxidant activity (1200mg ascorbic acid equivalent/100g) compared to other extracts.
In the MTT assay, HRE exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of cancer cells, with notable activity in HepG2 cell lines (IC50: 0976µg/mL).
In Western blotting and flow cytometry assay, HRE induces cell arrest at the G2/M phase along with cellular apoptosis by stimulating the production of a protein associated with cell death programming.
According to the analysis of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) assays, the anti-cancer cells' efficacy of hexane Rhizome Extract (HRE) was attributed to over 20 compounds that inhibit the mutation of epidermal growth factor receptor EGFR (1XKK) in the induction of cancer.
Dr. Mukunthan KS, the lead scientist said, " Our results provided significant evidence of the toxicity mechanisms of HRE that may be beneficial for more rational applications of drug discovery for slowing down cancer progression".
Taken together, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Extract Inhibits Pro-InflammatroyCytokines Association with Protection of Neurons Against Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
Acute brain infarction is a severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing the local death of the neurons. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential complications.
The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.
In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.
The exact causes of a blood clot to induce acute brain infarction are unknown. However, trouble with speaking and understanding, confusion, sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm, or leg, headache, and trouble with walking are some of the most common symptoms found in patients with post-myocardial infarction.
Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.
Although there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction, some researchers suggested an unhealthy diet may have a strong and negative implication on the onset of the condition.
Dr. Guo J, the lead scientist at the Peking Union Medical College & Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences wrote, "Some dietary patterns are risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI)".
And, "Several dietary frequencies (serves per week) including vegetables, fruits, and tofu were closely associated with a decrease of AMI risk. The carbohydrate pattern showed a weak relationship with AMI. We observed a U-shaped association between frequencies of fat and protein pattern and AMI risk. Excessive fat intake increased the AMI risk.".
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of brain ischemia, researchers examined the effects of flower buds extract of Tussilago farfara Linné (Farfarae Flos; FF)on brain ischemia was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) for 90 min and reperfusion for 24 h.
Twenty rats included in the study were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=5 per group): normal, tMCAO-induced ischemic control, tMCAO plus FF extract 300 mg/kg-treated, and tMCAO plus MK-801 1 mg/kg-treated as reference drug. FF extract (300 mg/kg, p.o.) or MK-801 (1 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered after reperfusion.
According to the results of the differentiation, researchers found that
* FF protects the neurons by observing the rate of neuronal death and the microglia/astrocyte activation in ischemic brains.
* The extract. FF extract also suppressed the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as
iNOS, TNF-α, and HIF-1α, IL-1β, and IL-6 expression in ischemic brains.
* Furthermore, the FF extract (0.2 and 0.5 mg/mL, P<0.01) and Tussilago 20 and 50 μmol/L, P<0.01) also significantly inhibits the iNOS mRNA and protein expression associated with the production of NO production.
* Moreover, the FF extract and Tussilago significantly suppressed the protein kinase intracellular signaling molecules that are involved in functions including the regulation of cell division functions in a dose-dependent manner.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "FF extract has a neuroprotective effect in ischemic stroke by the decrease of brain infarction, and the inhibition of neuronal death and microglial activation-mediated inflammatory responses".
Taken together, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for protecting brain cells in the post of focal cerebral ischemia, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
