#Ginger Inhibits Parameters Associated with Type 2 #Diabetes, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be next-generation whole food used for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researchers do not know what causes the pancreas to die off or receptor sites to clog up. However, they do know obesity or overweight, gender, ethnicity, age, family history, and gestation diabetes, are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

If you experience some of the symptoms above, please make you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Dr. Rita R. Kalyani in the study to examine the increase with age and risk of type 2 diabetes wrote, "The unprecedented aging of the world's population is a major contributor to the diabetes epidemic, and older adults represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the diabetes population".

"Almost one-third of U.S. adults over the age of 65 years have diabetes. Approximately half of those are undiagnosed, and an additional one-third of older adults have prediabetes" and "management of older adults with diabetes is clearly more complicated given the observation that they commonly have multiple coexisting medical conditions that can impact clinical management".

Compared to the general population risk of type 2 diabetes, the results clearly stated, the risk of type diabetes in the elderly is 3 fold higher and the management of the disease is more difficult due accompanied by other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with little or no side effects, researchers looked into the effects of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile, and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial, included 70 types 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into the ginger group consumed 1600 mg of ginger, and the control group consumed 1600 mg of wheat flour daily for 12 weeks.

Patients treated with ginger demonstrated a significant effect in reducing the levels of fasting plasma glucose, 3 months average glucose concentration, and insulin resistance.

Furthermore, the blood profile of the treatment group also displayed lower levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, a hormone associated with lipid peroxidation. compared to the placebo group.

There were no significant differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein LDL, and TNFα, the inflammatory cytokine between the two groups.

The findings firmly indicated ginger improves insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profiles and reduced inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients.

Additionally, with an aim to reaffirm the effects of ginger against the development of type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications, researchers investigated the effect of ginger supplementation on glycemic indices in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 20-60 -year-old patients with type 2 diabetes who did not receive insulin.

Participants in the intervention and control groups received 3 g of powdered ginger or placebo (lactose) (in capsules) daily for 3 months.

At the end of the 3 months, researchers showed that all parameters associated with diabetes were reduced substantially in the treatment group compared to control.

More precisely, the differences between the ginger and placebo groups were statistically significant as follows: serum glucose (-19.41 ± 18.83 vs. 1.63 ± 4.28 mg/dL, p < 0.001), (Hemoglobin A1C)HbA1c percentage (-0.77 ± 0.88 vs. 0.02 ± 0.16%, p < 0.001), insulin (-1.46 ± 1.7 vs. 0.09 ± 0.34 μIU/mL, p < 0.001), insulin resistance (-16.38 ± 19.2 vs. 0.68 ± 2.7, p < 0.001), high-sensitive CRP (-2.78 ± 4.07 vs. 0.2 ± 0.77 mg/L, p < 0.001), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) (22.04 ± 24.53 vs. 1.71 ± 2.72 U/L, p < 0.006), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (0.78 ± 0.71 vs. -0.04 ± 0.29 µIU/mL, p < 0.01) and MDA (-0.85 ± 1.08 vs. 0.06 ± 0.08 µmol/L, p < 0.001) were significantly different.

Where paraoxonase ((PON)-1 is an enzyme associated with the protection against lipid oxidation, Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker.

Dr. Shidfar F, the lead scientist said, "The 3 months supplementation of ginger improved glycemic indices, TAC, and PON-1 activity in patients with type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects.

#Fennel Methanol #Extract Inhibits the #ProinflammatoryCytokines Associated with the Onset of #CognitiveImpairment, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may process a sustainable and therapeutic effect in enhancing cognitive functions, some scientists suggested.

Cognitive function is a mental process of the brain, with an aim to acquire knowledge by accumulating information through reasoning, memory, attention, and language, regardless of circumstances.

On the other hand, cognitive impairment, depending on the severity is a condition in which the infected person has trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect the quality of their everyday life.

In the elderly, most cases of cognitive impairment are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and long-term use of medication, including Alzheimer's;s disease.

However, malnutrition, hormone imbalance such as thyroid hormone, mental illness, and substance abuse, particularly, in brain damage or injury are some of the major and prevalent risk factors that can cause the early onset of cognitive impairment.

Some researchers suggested that people who have metabolic syndrome (abnormally high blood pressure, and high blood sugar, obesity and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride level), mental illness, and previously disturbed the state of mind due to fever, intoxication is also at a higher risk of the condition develops.

Dr. Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, in the study of the effects of nutrients on brain function, wrote. "diets that are high in saturated fat are becoming notorious for reducing molecular substrates that support cognitive processing and increasing the risk of neurological dysfunction in both humans and animals"

And, Dr. Alan J. Gow, the lead scientist, in the study of the effects of lifestyle in cognitive impairment, said, " Lifestyle factors, particularly those which are malleable across the life course, may be highly informative for the development of interventions to reduce or delay age-related cognitive decline".

These explanations strongly agreed that following healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and less saturated and trans fat, processed meat, refined products,...... salt, and sugar, and a lifestyle with moderate exercise may have a significant effect in protecting the brain neurons against the onset of cognitive impairment.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
.
Anethole, the main fragrance and bioactive compound of fennel, in the study of 20 other plant species was found to process nootropic activity in protecting the degeneration of the neurons, including diseases associated with a decline in cognitive abilities such as Alzheimer's disease through its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective expression.

In the inflammatory expression, the application of anethole exerted a significant effect in mediated NF-kB in the systematically inflammatory response induced by transcription of proinflammatory genes and TNF-α signaling in the production inflammatory factors in the acute phase of infection.

The initiation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine in the case of acute infection is a natural defense of the immune response to protect the injured tissue against the invasion of bacteria and viruses. However, overexpression of inflammatory factors may also catalyze tissue damage and cause neuron cell death.

From an oxidative perspective, the application of anethole in the tested model also demonstrated a strong effect in inhibiting reactive oxygen species ROS which cause cytotoxicity to neuron through its antioxidant and stimulated the production of the host antioxidant defense.

Injection of anethole also rebalanced the ratio of levels of free radicals and antioxidants, thus reducing the risk of the initiated production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the precipitation of the death of the brain cell that controls memory or other cognitive functions.

Furthermore, in the evaluated fennel effect in Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder associated with a decline in cognitive abilities, researchers found that fennel intake exerts a strong neuroprotective effect in protecting against progressive degeneration.

The methanol extract of the whole plant of F. vulgare administered for eight successive days ameliorated the deficit of memory caused by brain damage, disease, or psychological trauma induced by scopolamine and aging-induced memory deficits in mice.

In acetylcholinesterase AChE-induced neurotoxicity in mice, the application of extract also increased step-down latency and reserved the neuron damage caused by acetylcholinesterase AChE toxicity.

Dr. Preksha Dwivedi, the lead authors, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Foeniculum vulgare Linn. The extract used as a nootropic and anticholinesterase agent in mice. F. vulgare extract increased step-down latency and acetylcholinesterase inhibition in mice significantly. F. vulgare is employed in the treatment of cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease".

Taken together, fennel, fennel extracts, or its bioactive anethole may be considered a functional food for enhancing memory or other cognitive functions through its neuroprotective and nootropic activity. However, intake of fennel extracts should be taken with extreme care in the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

Long-Term Intake of #Tomato Is Inversely Assoviated with the Onset of Digestive-Tract Cancer, Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton

Digestive-tract formed part of the digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus and plays a critical role to absorb the nutrient from the food intake to the blood before passing them to other parts of the body.

Cancers are a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in the body tissue.

Most cases of digestive-tract cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tissue before penetrating into deeper layers and colonizing the entire organ.

Colon cancer is one of the most common and slow-growing cancers in the digestive tract that

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, 95,520 people will be diagnosed with colon cancer. Colon cancer will also cause the death of 50,260 patients in the same year.

The 5 years survival rate of colon cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%.

The most common signs of digestive tract cancer include abdominal pain, blood in the stool due to bleeding, and a noticeable lump in the abdomen accompanied by the general symptoms shared with other types of cancer such as unexplained weight loss, weakness or fatigue and gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms with no signs of stopping, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

WHO in the examination of diet in cancer risk wrote, "Cancer is the most important cause of death after diseases of the circulatory system. It accounts for 20% of all deaths in the Region, with 2.5 million new cases diagnosed each year".

And, "A large body of literature indicates that as much as 30% of all cancer cases are linked to poor dietary habits, and is therefore preventable. The proportion reaches 70% for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract".

In other words, poor diet is one of the major causes of gastrointestinal cancer worldwide.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of digestive-tract cancer, researchers examined the relationship between tomato intake and the risk of digestive tract cancer.

According to the data from a series of case-control studies conducted in Italy between 1983 and 1992, over the time span, 317 incident cases of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx, 85 of the esophagus, 723 of the stomach, 955 of the colon, and 629 of the rectum, were diagnosed compared to a total of 2879 controls admitted for acute, non-neoplastic conditions, unrelated to long-term modifications of diet.

The ORs for the highest tomato consumption quartile were 0.65 (95% CI 0.4-1.0) for oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus, 0.43 (95% CI 0.3-0.6) for stomach, 0.39 (95% CI 0.3-0.5) for colon, and 0.42 (95% CI 0.3-0.6) for rectum.

The ORs of colorectal cancer for the highest consumption quintile were 0.79 (95% CI 0.6-0.9) for colon and 0.71 (95% CI 0.5-0.9) for rectal cancer, according to another study of colorectal cancer, based on 1,953 cases and 4,154 controls, conducted between 1992 and 1996, using a more detailed food frequency questionnaire.

The findings strongly suggested that a long-term high amount of tomato consumption has a strong impact on the risk of digestive tract cancer, regardless of several potential confounding factors, including measures of body mass index, calorie intake, and physical activity.

Furthermore, in order to examine the additional information about tomato anti-digestive-tract cancers, researchers investigated the effect of tomatoes on the risk of digestive tract tumors based on an integrated series of case-control studies conducted between 1985 and 1991 in northern Italy, where tomato intake is high but, also, heterogeneous.

Over the span of 7 years, the oral cavity and pharynx, 314; the esophagus, 85; stomach, 723; colon, 955; and rectum, 629 were diagnosed compared to a total of 2,879 controls admitted to the hospital for acute non-neoplastic or non-digestive conditions, unrelated to long-term dietary modifications.

The OR of digestive-tract cancers in the upper quartile was ranging between 0.4 and 0.7 compared to the baseline.

Researchers after allowance for age, sex, study center, education, smoking, and drinking level, and tertile of total caloric intake into account said, "The beneficial effect of raw tomatoes in this population may be partly due to the fact that they constitute perhaps the most specific feature of the Mediterranean diet".

And, " However, if it is true that tomatoes protect against digestive-tract cancers, this is of interest from both a scientific and a public health viewpoint".

Taken together, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of digestive-tract cancers, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Eyebright #EssentialOil Processes a Strong Anti-#Microbial Activity, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated with antibiotics.

Microorganism, first observed by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1675 is a class of microscopic organisms, including a bacterium, virus, or fungus.

Believe it or not, single-celled like bacteria, algae, protozoa, or multicellular, such as algae and fungi can survive under all types of extreme environments.

And less than 1% of bacteria, can invade and cause infection and diseases.

Although the discovery of human antibiotics is medicines that kill or slow the growth of bacteria, however, overuses of antibiotics have been found to induce microbial resistance to certain drugs.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the antimicrobial effects on the essential oil extracted from Eyebright, Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne (Scrophulariaceae).

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infections and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

According to the analysis of eye infections induced by Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans,
* 70 constituents isolated from the essential oil that inhibited infection, the n-hexadecanoic acid (18.47%) was the main constituent followed by thymol (7.97%), myristic acid (4.71%), linalool (4.65%), and anethole (4.09%).

* The essential oil showed an antimicrobial effect against all organisms tested with the exception of P. aeruginosa.

* Most importantly, the best activity was observed against all Gram-positive bacteria tested with the minimum inhibitory concentrations of 512 µg/mL.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This is the first report on the chemical composition of E. rostkoviana essential oil and its antimicrobial activity".

Taken altogether, Eyebright (Euphrasia) may be considered a remedy for the treatment of microbial infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #DevilsClaw Derived Compounds Exert a Strong Anti-#Migraine Activities, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Migraine headache is one most common headaches associated with a condition a chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches.
Nausea usually develops gradually over 5–20 minutes and lasts for less than 60 minutes.

According to the Research Migraine Foundation, nearly 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone with migraines.

Approximately, 12% of the population suffers from migraines including 18% of American women, 6% of men, and 10% of children experience migraines.

Migraine is most common between the ages of 18 and 44.

Sadly, 1 in 7 people in the world population will develop migraine headaches at some point in their lifetime. And, chronic migraine affects about 2% of the world's population.

More precisely, if you are a woman your risk of migraine headaches is 2 times higher in comparison to men.

Some patients during migraine attacks also suffer symptoms of visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch, and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.

Conventional medicine in reduced symptoms of pain during attacks such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan,..and Eletriptan may be effective but they may induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, dizziness, drowsiness,... and muscle weakness.

According to the International Headache Society, complications of migraine headaches can be divided into
* Chronic migraine
Chronic migraines are headaches in the absence of medication overuse, occurring on ≥15 days per month for ≥3 months, of which headaches on ≥8 days must fulfill the criteria for migraines and they continue over a long period of time.

* Status migrainosus
Status migrainous is a condition of migraine episodes that persist for less than 3 days, but in most cases, there are periods of relative relief, but these generally last no longer than four hours.

* Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI)
Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI) is a rare complication of migraines with neurological and ophthalmological examinations.

* Migrainous infarction
Migrainous infarction is a rare complication after the usual attacks of migraines with aura.

* Migraine seizures
A migraine seizure is an epileptic seizure that follows a migraine with aura, meeting the definition for migraine with aura, and an epileptic seizure must occur within one hour of the migraine aura.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of headaches, scientists reviewed literature articles and relevant books using Web of Knowledge and SciVerse Scopus databases.
Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of the genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidney conditions, etc.

According to tested analysis, devil's claw-derived compounds show considerable promise as novel drugs in migraine prevention and treatment.
However, their antimigraine action was unknown.

And its safety has not been determined.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "It is necessary to conduct more research to better understand their antimigraine action, to confirm their effectiveness and safety, and to introduce them into clinical practice".

Taken altogether, Devil's Claw a number of phytochemicals compounds may be considered a remedy for the treatment of migraine, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene and #Tocopherol Inhibit Oxidative Stress and Mammary Tumorigenesis Against the Risk of Mammary Cancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.

The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.
The mammary gland located in the breasts of females is responsible for lactation, or the production of milk.

Both males and females have glandular tissue within the breasts, however, in females, the glandular tissue begins to develop after puberty in response to estrogen release.
A mammary tumor is a medical and chronic condition that originated from the milk-producing gland.

Most cases of mammary cancer are first found in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the milk-producing gland, before penetrating deeper into the layers.

At the advanced stage, the malignant cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Epidemiologically, mammary cancer has been found to spread to the colon and the liver.

Most common risk factors of mammary cancer are similar to those of breast cancer, including, aging, physical inactivity, being obese or overweight, family and personal history, having a dense breast, radiation therapy, pregnancy history, genetic proposition, particularly in women who had used drug diethylstilbestrol (DES).

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the synergistic effect of lycopene and tocopherol against oxidative stress and mammary tumorigenesis.

According to the analysis from the administration of lycopene (Lyco) alone or combined with tocopherol (Lyco + Toco) for 90 days against a single oral dose of (50 mg/kg body weight) 7,12-dimethyl[a], benzanthracene (DMBA)-induced oxidative stress and mammary carcinogenesis in female rats,
* There is a significant elevation in the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) in serum and breast tissues of DMBA-injected rats.

* The combined treatment (Lyco + Toco) group showed a potential reduction of these parameters more than Lyco alone group.

* Furthermore, Lyco alone showed significantly higher activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase.
In other words, the formation of tumor and angiogenesis in DMBA-induced rats and these abnormal changes were ameliorated by combined treatment with Lyco + Toco.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, "These results suggested that supplementation of the diet with Lyco and Toco provided antioxidant defense, with strong chemopreventive activity against DMBA-induced mammary tumors".

Taken together, tocopherols used alone or combined with lycopene may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.
Macrophages are one of the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

However, in some cases, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to abnormal skin healing and the formation of irreversible scars.

Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.

Low-grade inflammation is a different type of chronic inflammation characterized by the production of inflammatory cytokines in a low-grade state.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effect of a hot water extract of C. longa L. (WEC) containing anti-inflammatory agents, bisacurone, and turmerone on chronic inflammation.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study included middle-aged and elderly subjects aged 50-69 years with overweight or prehypertension/mild hypertension assigned to consume 900 mg WEC tablets, containing 400 μg bisacurone, 80 μg turmeronol A and 20 μg turmeronol B (WEC group: n = 45), or placebo tablets without WEC (placebo group: n = 45) daily for 12 weeks.

Based on the experimental results, the WEC treatment group showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 associated with WEC anti-inflammatory activities.

Furthermore, the WEC group had significantly lower serum levels of glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides, and higher serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to the placebo group.

Moreover, according to the SF-36 score and PMOS, WEC also improved the general health, vitality, mental health, mental summary component, and mood states (vigor-activity and friendliness, respectively.

Based on the results, researchers said, "WEC may ameliorate chronic low-grade inflammation, thus contributing to the improvement of associated metabolic disorders and general health".

Taken together, turmeric used alone or a combination with other phytochemicals may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
