#Herbal Extract and Curcumin From #Turmeric Exert #Neuroprotective Effects by Inhibiting the Expression of Oxidation, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal spice that processed bioactive ingredients for the treatment of neuro-disorder with no side effects, according to studies.
Neuroprotection is an action involved in the use of a natural substance to protect the integrity and viability of neurons against damage or death.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

The most common disease associated with neuro-degenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease.

The disease has been found to negatively influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There are many risk factors that cause the onset of the progressive death of brain neurons. Genetic preposition, medical condition, such as alcoholism, brain cancer, or a stroke in the brain.

A prolonged period of toxins and toxic chemicals accumulated that affects brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

Out of many factors, some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity may process some negative implications in stimulating the rise of neurodegenerative disease in older adults in the Western world.

Dr. Daniel Shalev, the lead scientist wrote, "So how does obesity or diabetes contribute to a 50% increase in the risk of dementia?".

And, "Many of the same processes that affect coronary arteries and visceral organs also impact the brain. Inflammation leads to the activation of microglia and astrocytes. This causes the release of cytokines and reactive oxidants, ultimately leading to neuronal dysfunction or death. Critically, this process can unleash a vicious cycle: dying neurons can cause more inflammation, thereby creating a cascade of neurodegeneration".

The findings strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of dementia is substantially higher compared to non-obese individuals.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound that processes neuroprotective activity, researchers evaluated the neuroprotective effects of extracts from the radix of C. aromatica (ECAs, Turmeric) on free radical damage cells.

The study included the model of oxidative stress damage (H2O2-damaged PC12 cells) induced by injection of 400 µM H2O2.

Compared to ECAs at the same doses, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric showed a marked increase in the rate of neuron survival and enhancement of the antioxidant enzyme activities via the inhibition of the level of ROS.

In other words, 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) from turmeric exerted better neuron-protective and antioxidant activity than of ECAs.

Furthermore, the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) also attenuated the intracellular Ca2+ overloading in the induction of psychiatric overtones, such as depression, anxiety, cognitive dysfunction and decreased the activation of proteins and matrixes involved cell apoptosis, similar to those of ECAs.

The efficacy of the 95% EtOH extract (HCECA) and 75% EtOH extract (MCECA) against the degeneration of neurons was attributed to the presence of the active compound diarylheptanoids.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "These findings indicated that the effects of HCECA and MCECA on inhibiting the cells damage induced by H2O2 in PC12 are better than other extracts from the radix of C. aromatica".

In order to reveal more information about turmeric neuroprotective effects, researchers evaluated the effects of curcumin against nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation in an animal model.

This study included 60 adult male rats divided randomly into six groups. Group 1 received 0.7 ml/rat normal saline, and Group 2 received 6 mg/kg nicotine. Groups 3, 4, 5, and 6 were treated concurrently with nicotine (6 mg/kg) and curcumin (10, 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg i.p. respectively) for 21 days.

According to the Open Field Test (OFT), curcumin-treated groups (40 and 60 mg/kg) reduced nicotine-induced motor activity disturbances.

Before the injection of curcumin nicotine treatment showed the increase of lipid peroxidation observed by the overexpression of ROS, proinflammatory cytokines, and protein associated with neuron apoptosis in the hippocampus.

Furthermore, nicotine also reduced the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the tested rats in the hippocampus.

Injection of curcumin reversed all alternation by attenuating nicotine-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation; and elevating the levels of P-CREB and BDNF associated with the improvement of cognitive function,

Taken together, turmeric and its bioactive compounds, particularly curcumin may be considered a supplement for the protection of neurons' integrity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coffee Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment which directly address the cause of the disease.
Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, abnormally high blood cholesterol, and triglyceride levels,.....

A joint study by respectable institutes suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine intake daily and regularly may contribute to the attenuated risk of metabolic syndrome.

Coffee, second to green tea, is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the search of the database from f PubMed and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for relevant articles published between 1 January 1999 and 31 May 2015, including 11 published reports and 13 studies with a total of 159,805 participants were eligible for our meta-analysis, the relative odd risk ratio of metabolic syndrome between the highest vs lowest category of coffee consumption was 0.872

The review also observed a non-linear relationship between coffee and coffee caffeine consumption in ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome, by dose-response analysis.

Additionally, in a cross-sectional population-based survey of 8,821 adults (51.4% female) conducted in Krakow, Poland. to evaluate the coffee and tea consumption and risk of metabolic syndrome, using food frequency questionnaires, observation of the questionnaire returned from participants expressed an interesting association between high coffee consumption of 3 cups and the clusters of lower BMI, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, and more elevated HDL cholesterol than those drinking less than 1 cup/day.

The study indicated that people drinking 3 cups of coffee daily and regularly have a favorably ameliorated risk of metabolic syndrome even after adjusting for potential confounding factors.

More importantly, the study also pointed out that high coffee consumption was negatively associated with waist circumference, hypertension, and triglycerides in women but not in men.

Furthermore, in the animal evaluation of the effect of coffee drinking on clinical markers of diabetes and metabolic syndrome in Zucker rats including Diabetic Zucker rats with metabolic syndrome and control Zucker rats, researchers at the Fluminense Federal Institute postulated that after animals received daily doses of coffee drink by gavage for 30 days, coffee consumption expressed a decreased risk of metabolic syndrome in reduced serum glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in compared to nontreatment group.

Dr. Abrahão SA, the lead researcher said, "The results demonstrate that treatment with roasted coffee drink, because of its hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect, is efficient in the protection of animals with metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus type 2".

The findings from the above studies suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine drinking daily and regularly have a favorably profound effect in decreasing the risk of metabolic syndrome, particularly in women.

#Ginger Exerts Gastroprotective Effects Through Antioxidant, Free Radical Scavenging, and Lipid Peroxidation Inhibition Activities

Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may have a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, some scientists suggested.
Gastrointestinal disorders are medical conditions, involving the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.

Most common gastrointestinal disorders are very mildly associated with digestive discomforts that can be resolved in a few days.

The gastroprotective effect is an action that protects the gastrointestinal tract against the onset of any disease, including infection and inflammation.

The causes of digestive disorders can be multiple. Most gastrointestinal disorders are caused directly by the disorders of the digestive system such as poor diet patterns. However, long-term use of certain medications can also induce gastrointestinal disorders, including Manticholinergic medication, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics.

In the search, for a diet therapy that can reverse and protect the digestive system against gastrointestinal disorders, researchers at the University of Florida, wrote, "Diet therapy through the elimination of offending foods such as wheat gluten or lactose, or inclusion of specialized products such as medium-chain triglycerides or elemental formulas, can sustain nutritional status".

And "Dietary components such as insoluble fiber appear to have physiologic effects, while soluble fibers may have metabolic effects important to diabetes and cardiovascular disease".

Additionally, the differentiation of types of diet may have a direct contribution to reducing the risk of gastrointestinal disorders, the authors continued, "Avoiding offending foods by Crohn's patients is an acceptable practice as long as entire categories of foods are not deleted. Avoiding all foods containing gluten from wheat, rye, barley, and oats, however, is a crucial prerequisite to recovery from celiac disease. Gluten is commonly used as a stabilizer, emulsifier, and extender in the food industry and is not always shown on food labels. Careful consultation with a registered dietitian can identify hidden sources of gluten in the diet.".

These results clearly indicated, depending on the types of gastrointestinal disorders, diet therapy with modification could have a strong impact on the prevention of the onset of the disease.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food that processes gastrointestinal protective effects, researchers looked into rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (Zingiberaceae), commonly known as ginger, an important kitchen spice, possessing myriad health benefits.

In laboratory animals., ginger was shown to be effective in preventing gastric ulcers induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs like indomethacin, aspirin], reserpine, ethanol, and acetic acid and Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric ulcerations.

The gastroprotective efficacy of ginger was attributed to its free radical scavenging, antioxidant; inhibition of lipid peroxidation activities.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of the gastroprotective effect to examine the turmeric (Curcuma longa) and ginger (Zingiber officianale), researchers conducted a study in the ethanol-induced ulcers animal model.

Selected rats were given 100, 500, and 1000 mg/kg body weight orally.

Application of TEO and GEO inhibited ulcers caused by the injection of ethanol by 84.7% and 85.1%, respectively, as seen from the ulcer index.

The reduced antioxidant enzymes such as GPx, SOD, catalase, and GSH produced by alcohol administration were significantly (p<0.001) increased by the simultaneous administration of TEO and GEO.

Ethanol-induced lesions such as necrosis, erosion, and hemorrhage of the stomach wall were significantly reduced after the oral administration of essential oils.

These results strongly suggested turmeric and ginger exerted a significant gastroprotective effect against gastrointestinal lesions with no side effects.

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered functional for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders,

#Herbal #Elderberry Methanol Extract Processes DPPH Scavenging activity and Anti-Glycation Activities, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Advanced glycation end is a by-product formed by protein or fat combined with sugar caused by cooking meat at high temperatures.
The products have been found to affect metabolic health.

The most common causes of AGEs are from the diet, particularly in people who follow the Western diet with high saturated and trans fat, a lot of red meats, and processed foods.

Low levels of AGEs may not be a problem, however, overexpression of AGEs can induce oxidative stress, leading to inflammation and damage proteins, lipids, and sometimes alternation of cells DNA.

In other words, AGEs initiate the production and free radicals and a free radical chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons in the outer ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis and also non-diabetic atherosclerosis and chronic heart failure are some of the most common forms of chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress induced by AGEs.

Some researchers suggested that modern life byproducts AGEs are the results of the promotion of the processed food diet.

Dr. Chetan Sharma, and Amarjeet Kaur, the lead scientist in the assessment of AGEs, wrote, "As modern diets are largely heat-processed, they are more prone to contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs)".

Elder or Common Elder is a shrub or small tree of the genus Sambucus of 30 species, belonging to the family Adoxaceae, native to the temperate-to-subtropical regions of both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat constipation, colic, diarrhea, colds, flu, bronchial and upper respiratory, skin irritation, rheumatism, etc.

In findings a natural compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers analyzed the anti-glycation activity of chemical compounds found in Sambucus formosana (Elder)

According to chemical analysis,
* Chlorogenic acid, rutin, isoquercetrin, nictoflorin, astragalin, and quercetin were quantified in a linearity range of 10-100 (μg/mL) with a correlation coefficient of greater than 0.996.

* Furthermore, six phenolics with a relative standard deviation ranging from 1.7-3.1%.showed a high recovery (86.5-93.1%) and good reproducibility.

* Methanol extract showed the greatest values of total phenolic content (93.1 mg gallic acid equivalent/g).

* Additionally, the methanol extract revealed the best antioxidant capacity based on the DPPH scavenging activity and anti-glycation activity (IC50 was observed at 97.1 and 77.9 μg/mL, respectively).

Taken together, Elder processes a number of antioxidants that may be considered an anti-glycation activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ashwagandha Inhibits Neuro-Inflammation Through Its Antixiodant Activities, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.

Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacking the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.

Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress in the brain.

A nerve cell is a brain cell specialized in transmitting nerve impulses.

Neuroinflammation is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the central nervous tissues, including the brain and spinal cord.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissue inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.

In other words, neuroinflammation is a complex response to brain injury involving the activation of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

Overnutrition in the Western world may be one of the main culprits associated with the widespread neuroinflammation in the aging population.

Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.

Most cases of neuroinflammatory disease associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau, and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the neuroprotective activity of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) against the inflammation associated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments induced by systemic LPS administration using in vivo rat model system.

The study included young adult Wistar strain male albino rats randomized into four groups: (i) Control, (ii) LPS alone, (iii) LPS + ASH-WEX, and (iv) ASH-WEX alone.

According to the tested analysis, orally administered ASH-WEX not only significantly suppressed the cognitive and motor-coordination impairments in rats, but also regulated the expression of various proteins involved in synaptic plasticity and neuronal cell survival.

In LPS-mediated microglial activation-induced damage to neurons via direct cell-to-cell contact or through secretion of inflammatory mediators, the application of ASH-WEX and FIV pretreatment restored neurite outgrowth and protect neurons from apoptotic cell death.

In other words, LPS-induced neuroinflammation activated in microglial-conditioned medium-treated neuronal cultures and microglial-neuronal co-culture were significantly demolished by the application of ASH-WEX.

Collectively, researchers said, "ASH-WEX can be used as a promising natural therapeutic remedial for the prevention of neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments associated with peripheral inflammation and neuroinflammation".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Angelica Inhibits the Pathways and Cell Cycle Regulators Associated with Apoptosis and Anti-Proliferation of #Glioma Cells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

A glioma is a type of brain and spinal cord tumor characterized by the alternation of DNA of the glial cells.
Believe it or not, gliomas have been found to account for 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumors, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumors.

Glioma can be classified into 3 types, including
* Astrocytomas are found in glial cells, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes. Most astrocytomas are localized.

* Ependymomas are cancers that grow in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back starting from the ependymal cells in the middle of your spinal cord and fluid-filled spaces in your brain.

* Oligodendrogliomas are cancers that begin on the oligodendrocytes of the brain or from a glial precursor cell.

Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, scientists examined the inhibitory effects of Angelica polysaccharides (APs), bioactive constituents of Angelica on a glioma cell line.

Angelica or Dang Gui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to tested analysis of both in vitro and in vivo models,
* APs exerted a significant inhibition of the growth and proliferation of U251 cells and induced their apoptosis.

* APs effectively reduced the expression of several cell cycle regulators such as cyclins D1, B, and E in the induction of cell cycle division of the tested cell line.

* APs also inhibited the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increased the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and cleaved-caspase-3.

* Most importantly, APs inhibited the transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling pathway and stimulated the expression of E-cadherin, associated with the inhibition of cell growth.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, " the results indicate that APs attenuate the tumorigenicity of glioma cells and promote their apoptosis by suppressing the TGF-β signaling pathway".

Taken together, Dandelion may be considered a neuroprotective remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

4,5-Dicaffeoylquinic Acid Found in Herbal Coltsfoot Processes Antitussive Activity Against Coughing Compared to Guaifenesin and Dextromethorphan

Kyle J. Norton

Coughing is a natural reflex that clears the throat of mucus or foreign pathogens. Frequent coughing may be a condition of infection caused by inflammation of the airway.
An acute cough is a condition that lasts for less than three weeks. Chronic coughing that lasts more than 3 weeks may be a condition of respiratory diseases, including asthma, allergies, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or bronchitis.

Phlegm produced in the lungs and lower respiratory tract is a type of mucus found mostly in acutely sick or longstanding health conditions patients.

Chronic mucus collected in the lungs has been associated with patients with tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, a fungal infection, whooping cough early in life, and measles.

Seriously, chronic mucus collected in the lungs increases a significant risk of further infections and more damage.

Antitussive is a type of substance used to prevent or relieve a cough.

The most common type of antitussive drug used for the treatment of cough is dextromethorphan

Another expectorant available in OTC products is guaifenesin.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic cough, researchers examined the anti-antitussive effect of Tussilagone (TSL) chemical constituents, chlorogenic acid (1), 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3), and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4).isolated from the flower of buds of Tussilago farfara (Compositae).

The study included selected mice orally treated with these compounds and their mixture (in a ratio of 5:28:41:26 as in EtE) at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg once daily for 3 days.

According to the tested analysis, chemical compounds 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4) exerted a significant anti-inflammatory activity by 49.7%.observed by the leukocyte count in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid associated with acute airway inflammation compared to the other compounds.

Moreover, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4) also inhibited 58.0% cough frequency.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The caffeoylquinic acids and their mixture, exhibiting significant antitussive,...and anti-inflammatory effects, could be considered a main effective ingredient of FTF, and they may act collectively and synergistically.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered an antitussive remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
