#Lycopene Processes a Strong Hepatoprotective Effect Against the Toxicity Induced by Concanavalin A

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ and the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is a process that maintains the healthy function of the liver against harmful toxins.

Toxic hepatitis that links to exposure to alcohol, chemicals, drugs, or nutritional supplements that cause inflammation of the liver may be the most common liver toxicity in the US.

In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.

Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.

According to the statistic from the Canadian liver foundation, approximately, one in ten Canadians, or more than three million people, have some form of liver disease.

Believe it or not, chronic hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and liver cancer account for 95% of deaths in patients with liver disease.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers examined the liver-protective effects of lycopene.

The study included BALB/c male mice divided into three equal groups: control, Concanavalin A (Con A), and Con A and lycopene the control group mice received the only vehicle by intraperitoneal injection, the Con A group mice were given Con A, and group mice received Con A and lycopene.

The Mice group treated by Con A showed significant liver damage observed by elevated levels of oxidative stress markers such as Con A administration increased histopathological damage, and the levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT).

Furthermore, Con A also stimulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6, and immune response pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α.

According to the analysis of the effect of lycopene on the Con A and lycopene group, all parameter associated with liver damage induced by Con A was significantly reduced by the administration of lycopene.

More importantly, lycopene not only inhibited the negative effect of Con A on liver injury but also promoted liver cell viability and cell growth.

In other words, lycopene processed anti-liver toxicity activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results of this study revealed that lycopene might be a useful hepatoprotective agent for reducing increased proinflammatory cytokine levels, and for increasing cell viability and cell growth".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the promotion of liver protection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Hot Water Extract From #Turmeric Inhibits Anti Chronic Inflammation through Its Anti Inflammatory Agents, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a systematic immune response during the acute phase of infection.
Macrophages are one of the lymphocytes and the first-line defense of the immune system.

Acute inflammation is a natural response of the immune system to protect the human body against harmful stimuli and pathogens.

Acute information is the first phase of injection. At this phase, after sensing the body injury by the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense stimulates the production of blood platelets to cover the site of damage and pro-inflammatory to kill off pathogens that try to enter the body through the wound or damaged tissue.

Acute inflammation usually receded after a few days or weeks depending on the size and damage. However, if all pathogens were not eradicated after 3 to 8 weeks, the immune system will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a leading cause of chronic illness.

However, in some cases, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to abnormal skin healing and the formation of irreversible scars.

Chronic inflammation is a result of a prolonged period of inflammation that lasts for several months and even years caused by the inability of the immune system to kill off all harmful microorganisms during the acute phase of infection.

Low-grade inflammation is a different type of chronic inflammation characterized by a production of inflammatory cytokines in a low-grade state.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effect of a hot water extract of C. longa L. (WEC) containing anti-inflammatory agents, isochrone, and turmerone on chronic inflammation.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study included middle-aged and elderly subjects aged 50-69 years with overweight or prehypertension/mild hypertension assigned to consume 900 mg WEC tablets, containing 400 μg bisacurone, 80 μg turmeronol A and 20 μg turmeronol B (WEC group: n = 45), or placebo tablets without WEC (placebo group: n = 45) daily for 12 weeks.

Based on the experimental results, the WEC treatment group showed a significant decrease in the serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 associated with WEC anti-inflammatory activities.

Furthermore, the WEC group had significantly lower serum levels of glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides, and higher serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to the placebo group.

Moreover, according to the SF-36 score and PMOS, WEC also improved the general health, vitality, mental health, mental summary component, and mood states (vigor-activity and friendliness, respectively.

Based on the results, researchers said, "WEC may ameliorate chronic low-grade inflammation, thus contributing to the improvement of associated metabolic disorders and general health".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or a combination with other phytochemicals may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry #RiceExtract Inhibits Systemic Disorders Associated with the Onset of #Periodontitis, Researchers say

Kyle J. Norton

Periodontitis is a severe stage of gingivitis that damages the soft tissue and destroys the bone that supports your teeth, leading to teeth loosening or tooth loss.
Systemic diseases are a group of condition that affects other parts of the body, or even the whole body.

The most common symptomatic disorders are high blood pressure which affects the brain and diseases associated with the circulatory system or systemic disease flu which affects the entire body.

An infection in the bloodstream is called a systemic infection.

The most common systemic diseases are
* Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40, causing a diminished quality of life for many elders(1). According to the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect over 52 million adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

* Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulating on the wall of the arteries, leading to the narrowing the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.

Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is made of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.

* Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell anemia (SCD), a genetic preposition form of anemia is a condition associated with not enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body.

The red blood cells in sickle cell anemia patines are rigid and sticky with the shapes of sickles or crescent moons.

Normal red blood cells live for about 120 days compared to sickle cells that die in 10 to 20 days. In other words, the inability of the body to replace the cell that dies rapidly with new blood cells is a cause of sickle cell anemia.

Other systemic diseases may include diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, influenza, diabetes mellitus, trauma, Alzheimer's disease, renal diseases, septicemia, and liver diseases.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases that affect part or the whole body, researchers investigated the cranberry and rice extract's effect on gingipains associated with
periodontitis and systemic diseases.

According to the tested results, the administration of cranberry and rice extracts interferes with gingipain activity and prevents the growth and biofilm formation of periodontopathogens.

In other words, the tested extract showed a gingipain inhibition that represents a novel approach to treating and preventing periodontitis.

The cranberry rice extract as a gingipain inhibitor may also help treat systemic disorders that are associated with periodontitis, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, aspiration pneumonia, pre-term birth, and low birth weight.

Taken together, cranberry combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of systemic diseases in patients with periodontitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#EglycosylatedCaffeicAcid Derivative Found in #Eyebright ( Euphrasia) Processes Anti Oxidativestress Through Its Antioxidant Activity

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outermost ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including
* Antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

* Antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E. Most antioxidant vitamins are considered free radical scavengers that gobble up free radicals before they can induce a cascade of damage.

* Antioxidant Phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.

Antioxidants keep our bodies functioning properly by reducing the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases, scientists examined the antioxidant activity of Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne (Eyebright).

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infections and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

According to ABTS and DPPH decolorization assays, Fraction one isolated from the herbal medicine, dominated by a glycosylated caffeic acid derivative, exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity.

Furthermore, the most effective IC50 concentrations were found to be 11.88 microg/ml and 4.24 microg/ml, respectively, compared to the investigated standards.

Additionally, the fractions of flavonoid glycosides proved to have a similarly strong, but lower effect compared to fraction one.

Most importantly, the scavenging reaction of the two radical cations was depending on the IC50.

Taken together, eyebright may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Enchinanea Inhibits and Reduces Severe Symptoms with a Mortality of Pathogenic E. Coli Infection, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Bacterias are a class of microorganisms consisting of a single cell with a simple internal structure with a number of different shapes.

Not all bacterias are harmful to humans. Some are essential to human life, with benefits related to improving digestive function, preventing overexpression of harmful disease-causing bacteria, and the synthesis of essential nutrients and vitamins.

Believe it or not, the human gut contains over 10 trillions of bacteria including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.

In a healthy individual, the levels of microorganisms in the gut are balanced.

The gut microbiota plays a critical role in breaking down foods that the stomach and small intestines cannot digest, stimulating the production of vitamins K and D, protecting the intestinal against damage caused by bad bacteria, and increasing immune functioning.

Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

The most common diseases associated with pathogenic Escherichia coli are cholecystitis, bacteremia, cholangitis, urinary tract infection (UTI), and traveler's diarrhea.

Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated with antibiotics.

Echinacea also known as purple coneflowers, is a flowering plant of the genus Echinacea, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to eastern and central North America. The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat or prevent colds, flu, and infections by stimulating immune function, etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the impact of dietary supplementation with Echinacea purpurea (EP) in broiler chickens infected by pathogenic E. coli.

The study included eighty-one-day-old chicks of both sexes, commercial Hubbard chicks, that were divided into 4 groups.
* The first was kept as normal control.
* The second was supplemented by EP (5 mg/kg feed) from the first day to the end.

* The third was infected orally by 1 ml E. coli O78 at 107 CFU intra-crop at 7 days old.

* The fourth group was supplemented by EP and infected by E. coli O78 as previously described.

According to the analysis.
* Compared to E. coli-infected chicks that disclosed severe symptoms with a mortality 30%, the infected and EP-supplemented group showed less clinical symptoms and 15% mortality.
* EP-supplemented groups showed a significant improvement in their body weight compared to the infected group.

* More importantly, E. coli-infected chickens revealed a significant drop in lymphocytes number with a significant elevation in monocyte and heterophils with non-significant changes in total leucocyte count when matched with the group, while the fourth group revealed non-significant changes in total leucocyte with a significant drop in heterophils and monocyte and a significant elevation in the lymphocytes matching with the 3rd group.

* Furthermore, serum biochemical markers of the liver, kidneys, and immunological parameters showed severe adverse alterations associated with E. coli infection.

After taking other factors into account, researchers said, "Dietary supplementations with Echinacea purpurea improve the final body weight and immune response of non-infected chicks and have a respectable effect for facing E. coli infection".

And "EP improves hematological and serum biochemical adverse effects occurred by E. coli infection. Histopathology of liver, kidneys, intestines, and spleen confirms these alterations".

Taken together, herbal Enchinanea may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of infectious diseases induced by E. coli, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Improves the Ratio of Gut Microbiota by Favoring the "Good" Organisms, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota is a complex community with over a trillion microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.

According to the ESMN, the microbiota can weigh up to 2 kg, including 1/3 of gut microbiota found in most people, comapred to 2/3 that are specific to individuals depending on geography, environment, and lifestyle.

In healthy individuals, the ratio of good and bad microorganisms is balanced. In other words, healthy gut microbiota levels maintain the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract.

A balanced ratio of gut microbiota plays a critical role in the digestion of certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, in the production of vitamins, improvement of digestive functioning, and modulation of the immune function.

The use of antibiotics has been found to damage the gut ecosystem, leading to certain chronic illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism.

Unhealthy gut microbiota has been found to
* Decrease the interaction with the immune function against inflammatory immune disorders.

* Increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

* Reduce nutrient extraction from the diet, thus increasing the risk of obesity and obesity complications.

* Increase the risk of controlling brain insulin signaling and metabolite levels that can lead to bad neurobehaviors.

Further, the unbalanced ratio of gut microbiota functions also alters immune homeostasis, leading to the onset of autoimmune disorders which in turn can affect the development of not only intestinal but also systemic autoimmune diseases.

Compared to probiotics, prebiotics is compound in food that induces the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.

In other definition, it is a special form of dietary fiber that acts as a fertilizer that promotes the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

In the gastrointestinal tract, prebiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome.

In other words, prebiotics raises the levels of healthy bacteria against bad bacteria.

In finding a potential compound for the promotion of digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of cranberries' impact on gut microbiota.

The randomized, double-blind, cross-over, controlled design trial included a total of 11 healthy adults consumed for 5 days each a control diet (animal-based diet (meats, dairy products, and simple sugars) plus 30 g/day placebo powder) and a cranberry diet (animal-based diet plus 30 g/day freeze-dried whole cranberry powder).

According to the tested analysis of the stool, urine, and blood samples, compared to the pre-control diet, the control diet modified 46 taxonomic clades in the gut, including an increase in the abundance of Firmicutes and a decrease in Bacteroidetes and increased bacteria-derived deoxycholic acid and decreased acetate and butyrate in stool

In other words, the control diet induces a significant change in gut microbiotas by favoring the "bad" organisms.

Comapred to the post-control diet, the cranberry diet modified 9 taxonomic clades, including a decrease in the abundance of Firmicutes and an increase in Bacteroidetes in the flavor of the good organisms in the gut.

Furthermore, cranberry promoted the balancing ratio of gut microbiotas by attenuating control diet-induced increase in secondary bile acids and decreasing the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and increase urinary anthocyanins and bacterially derived phenolic acids.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "an animal-based diet altered the microbiota composition to a less favorable profile, increased carcinogenic bile acids, and decreased beneficial SCFA. Cranberries attenuated the impact of the animal-based diet on microbiota composition, bile acids, and SCFA, evidencing their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota".

Taken together, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gut health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel's Powder, Extract, and Oil Detoxes the Kidneys Through Promoting Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect of eliminating excess water and toxin from our body, some scientists suggested.
Diuresis is a medicine with the function to stimulate the increased production of urine.

Detoxification is a process of eliminating toxin accumulation from our bodies. In some cases, the function may only target some specific organs, such as kidneys, liver,..... and lungs.

According to traditional medicine, detoxification is a necessary process to enhance and optimize the functions of our body by cleansing away substances that may reduce or cause harm to our body organs and tissue.

According to the Tao of Wellness in the address of the importance of detoxification of Traditional Chinese Medicine wrote, " Our body is automatically programmed to cleanse itself daily. However, with our fast-paced modern lifestyle and exposure to an increasing number of harmful and toxic substances, our body’s natural cleansing ability has become overworked and compromised" and "Many signs and symptoms attributed to stress are now being linked to exposure from harmful substances such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and mercury in food and liquids as well as dioxins and formaldehyde in the air".

Truly, harmful and toxic substances not removed from our bodies may have substantially negative implications to cause many serious illnesses, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases,..... and reproductive ailments.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb or food has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In an animal model, according to John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. in the evaluation of the re-toxic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare var dulce (D.C) root, researchers found that application of the extract exerts a significant activity in flushing out of excess water and toxin from the body through increased kidney function in secretion of fluids.

The result of these properties was observed by an increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion.

The efficacy in the cleansing body was also found linearly in dose depending manner.

Continuously, in further examine the efficacy of fennel powder, extract, and oil on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity through a study of a total of 35 adult female Sprague Dawley rats classified into five groups with the first group kept on the standard diet all over the period of the experiment. and the other groups were administered gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day for 7 days i.p), followed by either control (+ve) group or treated groups with fennel powder, extract, and oil for 45 days, at the end of the study, researchers found that

* Injected gentamicin group served as control and exhibited strong nephrotoxicity manifested by increasing levels of kidney function indicator, serum nitric oxide (NO), and kidney Mondiale (MDA) however, this group of rats also exerted a significant decrease in weight gain.

Increased expression of serum nitric oxide (NO) and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) is an indicator of severe oxidative stress caused by an imbalanced ratio of ROS and antioxidants in the host.

* Gentamicin groups treated with fennel powder, extract, and oil demonstrated an improved level of urea and uric acid in comparison to control (+ve) and displayed an improvement of antioxidant enzymes, serum superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase, and glutathione transferase (GST) and decrease of serum NO in compared to control (+ve) group.

These results addressed the important antioxidant effect of fennel extracts.

Furthermore, the applications not only inhibited the levels of free radicals and their' chain-reactive activities but also stimulated the production of antioxidants found in the host tissue.

* Moreover, the group treated with fennel oil restored the normal values of kidney antioxidant enzymes compared with the normal group and other treatment groups.

Dr. Soheir Ahamed Al-Masri, the lead author, after taking into account other co and confounders said, "Fennel powder, extract, and oil have a potent antioxidant and ameliorate in rats gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats".

Clearly, fennel oil exhibited the greatest effect in stimulating kidney function to detox the body toxins through increased secretion of urine compared to other experimental groups.

The results of this study clearly indicate that fennel powder, extract, and oil are potent antioxidants that ameliorate the levels of gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats.

Interestingly, in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) treated with either water extract of Marrubium vulgare L. or Foeniculum vulgare L. in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), researchers showed that application of fennel water extract reduces hypertension through Foeniculum increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion in compared to no effect of Marrubium treated group.

Additionally, in comparison to Marrubium extract reduced hypertension through inhibited contractile responses, fennel restored normal; blood pressure by increased urine secretion and ameliorated the overexpression of ROS and increased antioxidant status in the host.

Surely, one can say that Foeniculum acts mainly as a diuretic and a natriuretic while Marrubium displays vascular relaxant activity.

Taken together, fennel and its extracts may be considered a kidney-detoxed functional food in getting rid of body toxins through its diuretic activities.
