#Herbal #Eyebright #Extract Shows Strong Effects on Hyperglycemia in Vivo, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

In other words, hyperglycemia is a hallmark in patients with diabetes, the condition can also occur to people without diabetes due to a certain medical condition such as pneumonia in the elderly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms of shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

Over the long term, persistently mild hyperglycemia can lead to complications in the eyes, kidneys, nerve damage and heart disease, and stroke.

Most cases of hyperglycemia can be controlled by following diabetes guidance.

By eating a healthy diet high in fiber, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), whole-wheat flour, and wheat bran, accompanied by healthy fish, patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes can control their blood glucose without worrying the onset of hyperglycemia.

The most common causes of hyperglycemia are associated with an uncontrolled diet, improper use of insulin, and skipping diabetic medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst frequent urination, fatigue (weak, and unintended weight loss. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms of headaches, trouble concentrating, and blurred vision.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of high blood glucose, scientists examined the effects of the aqueous extract of the leaf of Euphrasia officinale.

Eyebright is one of the species of flowering plants, genus Euphrasia, belonging to the family Orobanchaceae, native to Europe.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat eye infections and to relieve inflammation caused by colds, coughs, sinus infections, sore throats, and hay fever.

The study included selected rats that were assigned to healthy normal or alloxan-induced diabetic rats

According to tested analysis and compared to the levels of blood glucose levels in normal and alloxan-diabetic rats

* Treatment of alloxan-induced diabetic rats showed a strong effect by bringing down the raised glucose levels,

* The extract administration exerted a significant activity against hypoglycemia in normal and diabetic-induced rats.

In other words, the aqueous extract of the leaf of Euphrasia officinale. not only has a strong activity against levels of blood glucose but also ameliorated hyperglycemia in diabetic experimental rats.

Taken together, Eyebright (Euphrasia)may be considered a remedy for the treatment of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal Devil's Club DC 70% #Ethanol Extract inhibits #PancreaticCancer by Targeting the Intrinsic Mitochondrial Apoptosis In Vitro

Kyle J. Norton

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.
Most cases of pancreatic cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreatic tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers to form a large and invasive tumor.

At the early stage, patients with pancreatic cancer may be asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, besides the common symptoms shared by all types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomforts, patients with the condition may also experience localized symptoms such as internal bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize tumor which suppresses the nerve cells and blood vessels.

The pancreas cancer was found to be the site of metastasis from renal cell cancer, lung, colon, and breast cancers.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even if diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer.

The 5-year survival rate including all stages of people with pancreatic cancer is 8%, compared to 32% of cancer detected at an early stage.

Scientists do not know the exact causes of pancreatic cancers, but they do know several risk factors that can make a person more likely to get the disease, including the genetic and acquired genetic mutation of p16 and TP53 and KRAS, BRAF, and DPC4 (SMAD4).

Other prevalent risk factors, including long-term use of tobacco, exposure to certain chemicals, overweight, and obesity, and unpreventable risk factors of family history, gender, the increase of age, and ethnicity are associated with the early onset of pancreatic cancer.

Devil's Club (DC) is a large shrub, genus Oplopanax, belonging to the family Aralioideae, native to the cool moist forests of western North America.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as Adaptogen, Antipyretic, Pain Reliever, Antitussive, and Antibacterial agent and to treat Arthritis, Diabetes, Colds, Cough, Sore throat, Chest congestion, Stomach pain, Constipation, Gall stones, Influenza, Cancer, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of DC 70% ethanol extract alone, or in combination with cisplatin, gemcitabine, and paclitaxel on pancreatic endocrine HP62 and pancreatic ductal carcinoma PANC-1 and BxPC-3 cells.

According to the tested differentiation,
* DC extract inhibited proliferation of HP62 with IC50 (50% inhibition concentration) at 0.037±0.002% (v/v), PANC-1 at 0.0058 ± 0.0004% and BxPC-3 at 0.021 ± 0.003%.

* DC at 0.0033% combined with 1 nM of paclitaxel showed inhibition synergy on PANC-1 cells with a combination index of 0.44.

* Increased cytochrome C, claspin, cIAP-2, and HTRA2/Omi apoptosis-related markers were upregulated in DC-treated HP62 and PANC-1.

Collectively, researchers suggested, "DC acts through targeting the intrinsic mitochondrial apoptosis pathway in the pancreatic cancer cells.

And, "The high antiproliferation potency of DC on PANC-1 is potentially useful as an adjunct therapy for treating pancreatic cancer, which is known for developing resistance to conventional chemotherapeutics".

Taken altogether, Devil's Club may be considered a remedy for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Low Levels of Serum #Tocopherols in the Body Are Associated with the Risk of #AgeRelatedMacularDegeneration, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, and medical conditions, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases.

Age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition that causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.

The elderly at the early stage of age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.

Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increase in size.

Advanced age-related macular degeneration has been found to induce irreversible blindness and visual impairment, according to epidemiological studies.

According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some form of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.

Age-related macular degeneration can be classified into 2 types
* The common AMD is the dry form caused by the gradual degeneration of the central retinal tissues, affecting 90% of patient s with AMD. Some patients with the dry form of AMD have been found to develop into the wet form over time.

* The wet form of AMD is caused by the breaking of the capillary under the macula, accounting for only 10% of AMD.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of degenerative diseases, researchers compared the effects of dietary n-3 Fatty Acid, α-Tocopherol, Zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C, and β-carotene on age-related macular degeneration.

According to the results of a brief-type self-administered questionnaire of the case-control study that reports the association between nutrient intake and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from 161 neovascular AMD cases from two university hospitals and 369 population-based control subjects in Japan,
* Low intakes of n-3 fatty acid, α-tocopherol, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin C, and β-carotene were associated with neovascular AMD.

In other words, low levels of serum of tocopherols were associated with increased risk of AMD.

* There was no association between retinol or cryptoxanthin intake and neovascular AMD.

These results were adjusted based on smoking history, age, sex, chronic disease history, supplement use, and alcohol consumption

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of AMD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #CrampBark Shows a Protective Activity Against the Disruption of Neurons in the Induction of #NeurodegenerativeDiseases, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The brain of mammals contains two major forms of cholinesterases: acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE).
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the primary enzyme that hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to choline and acetate.

Altered levels of ACh in the nervous system have been found to induce several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington, depending on the affected areas.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) enzyme plays a minor role in regulating brain acetylcholine (ACh) levels.

A cholinergic neuron is a nerve cell that mainly is used by the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) to send its messages

Impairment of the cholinergic neuronal system in the brain was involved in the underlying event of cognitive impairment.
Cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI) have been used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belongings to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as an anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with menopause, etc.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of associated neurodegenerative diseases, researchers examined ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts prepared from the branches, leaves, and fruits of Viburnum opulus and Viburnum lantana along with salicin on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory and antioxidant activities.

In vitro, according to the results from an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the leaf methanol extract of V. opulus displayed a significantly high inhibitory effect against AChE at 50, 100, and 200 μL/mL concentrations of 57.63%, 87%, and 93%, respectively compared to other extracts.

In other words, the leaf methanol extract of V. opulus showed the highest protective activity against the disruption of neurons in the induction of neurodegenerative diseases linearly in a doses dependent-manner.

Compared to Viburnum opulus, the extracts of V. lantana exerted higher antioxidant activity.

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) leaves may be considered a functional acetylcholinesterase inhibitor herb medicine for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Elecampane (Inula helenium) Induces Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cell Apoptosis by Its Cytotoxic Activity

Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition of abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the a number of extremely immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including
*Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extremely immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

All have a tendency to multiply quickly, which can lead to the death of other normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

*Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myelogenous lining caused of the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, scientists examined the antitumor effect of Alantolactone (ALT), an active component of the natural product Inula heleniumin on B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL).

Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.

According to the tested analysis of B-ALL cells that were treated with various concentrations of ALT,

* ALT showed a good antitumor effect in B-ALL by inducing cytotoxicity.
* In vivo and in vitro, ALT induced the overexpression of ROS to cause cancer apoptosis by damaging the cancer cell DNA damage.

* In addition, the induction of over a load of ROS by ALT was attributed to the effects in the direct inhibition of reductase.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "We found that ALT, a natural product, showing a promising tactic in the therapy of B-ALL by targeting ROS pathway".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#BroccoliSprout Inhibits Influenza by Reducing Some Virus-Induced Markers of Inflammation, and Virus Quantity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Influenza also known as "the flu", is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.
In other words, flu (influenza) is an infectious disease caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza virus) that can lead to symptoms of chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, etc.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. The influenza viruses A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, running and stuffy nose, and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus type C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of colds.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with the immature and weakened immune system such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to changes in the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

The most common H and N subtype are influenza A that has been mutated to affect the combination of human, swine, and bird flu viruses, including
* H1N1 - Swine Flu
H1N1 normally is only transmitted among pigs. However, as of today, H1N1 became the first flu pandemic in the world that causes respiratory illness.

* H5N1 - Bird Flu
H5N1 is the strain of influenza known as bird or avian flu. Before, it is transmitted between birds, but today, it now can be passed from bird to human. The strain is dangerous to humans with high death rates.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of viral diseases, researchers examined the effects of broccoli sprout homogenates (BSH) on nasal cytokines, virus replication, and Nrf2-dependent enzyme expression in smokers and nonsmokers.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included healthy young adult smokers and nonsmokers ingested BSH or placebo (alfalfa sprout homogenate) for 4 days, designated Days -1, 0, 1, 2. and on day 0 they received a standard vaccine dose of live attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) intranasally.
According to the tested analysis,
* In the area under curve analyses, post-LAIV IL-6 responses (P = 0.03) and influenza sequences (P = 0.01) were significantly reduced in NLF from BSH-treated smokers.

* However, In nonsmokers, a similar trend for reduction in virus quantity with BSH did not reach statistical significance.

In other words, in smokers, short-term ingestion of broccoli sprout homogenates appears to significantly reduce some virus-induced markers of inflammation, and virus quantity compared to less significant in non-smokers.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Nutritional antioxidant interventions have promise as a safe, low-cost strategy for reducing influenza risk among smokers and other at-risk populations".
And "However, because variability exists in the timing and methods of detection for SFN conjugate levels, it is difficult to compare systemic SFN levels across studies".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts may be considered supplements for the prevention of influenza, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Omega 3 Fatty Acid Reduce Fatal #CoronaryHeartDisease #CHD in Cohosts, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease is a medical condition that affects the cardiovascular system, including the heart, and blood vessels(arteries and veins).

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries that lead to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries caused by a hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up in the arteries, chemicals, such as cadmium clogging up arteries, etc. affecting the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.

Acute coronary syndrome is a medical emergency caused by suddenly reduced blood flow to the heart, leading to heart muscle damage and brain apoptosis, depending on the affected location.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Arteries formed a part of blood vessels and the circulatory system with the function to deliver oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles.

According to the statistics, approximately 1 of every 13 Americans aged 18 years and older are living with coronary artery disease. CHD is a leading cause of death in the ethnic group in the US, particularly in Hispanic Americans.

Believe it or not, CHD is predicted by scientists to become the most common cause of death worldwide by 2020.

Although CHD is a lowly progressive disease, the disease may become clinically apparent by age 40. People 65 years of age and older have been found in most patients with CHD.

Depending on the severity of the blockage, a complete blockage is life-threatening. Symptoms of coronary artery disease, chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck, back, or stomach, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of heart disease researchers examined the relationships between biomarkers of omega-3 fatty acids and risk for coronary heart disease (CHD).
,
According to the results of the study of the data10 of the cohorts,
* The overall mean (SD) for the Omega-3 Index in these 10 cohort studies was 6.1% (2.1%), and

* The HR for a 1-SD increase was 0.85 (95% confidence interval, 0.80-0.91).

* The median quintiles 1 and 5 levels were 4.2% vs. 8.3%, respectively.

* Based on these values, we estimate that the risk for fatal CHD would have been reduced by about 30% moving from an Omega-3 Index of 4%-8%.

Moreover, researchers said, "These findings support the use of <4% and >8% as reasonable therapeutic targets for the Omega-3 Index".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of fatal coronary disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
