#EssentialOil #Extract from #WildCarrots Inhibit #SkinCancer Proliferation and Induced #Apoptosis, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and substantial effect in reducing the risk, progression, and treatment of skin cancer, some scientists suggested.

Skin cancer is a condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in skin tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may infect other healthy tissue and organ a distance away from the original site.

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a sub spice of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the investigation of essential oil isolated from wild carrot umbels effect in mice induced skin cancer through injection of 7,12-dimethyl benz(a)anthracene (DMBA), after 20 weeks of administered to animals via gavage (0.02 mL of 100% oil), intraperitoneal (0.3 mL of 2% oil), and topical (0.2 mL of 5, 50, and 100% oil) with half maximal inhibitory concentration IC50, researchers showed that topical administration of 100% mice group exerted in delay skin cancer appearance and inhibited tumor incidence of 89%.

With the concentration of IC40, topical 50% and 5% treatment inhibited tumor incidence by 83% and 36%, respectively.

Topical ingestion of 100, 50, and 5% oil, also revealed a significant decrease of tumor volume by 99, 91, and 70%, respectively.

Intraperitoneally, treatment mice displayed an inhibited tumor by 43%, and decreased tumor volume by 85%, whereas gavage treatment showed minimal effects on both.

These results suggested that intraperitoneal and topical treatment of wild carrot essential oil decreased infiltration and proliferation with an increase in abnormal thickening of the outer layer of the skin.

Further analysis of the wild carrot essential oil anti-cancer effect on human epidermal keratinocytes and the chemopreventive activity of the pentane diethyl ether fraction on DMBA/TPA-induced skin carcinogenesis in mice, scientists in the joint study led by the Lebanese American University suggested that application of all fractions isolated from the essential oil exhibited significant cytotoxicity, with HaCaT cells being 2.4-3 times less sensitive than HaCaT-ras A5 (benign tumorigenic), and HaCaT-ras II4 (malignant) cells observed by western blot.

In Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, 2-himacharlen-6-ol. a derivative isolated from pentane/diethyl ether fraction (F2), demonstrated strong inhibition of HaCaT-ras A5 and HaCaT-ras II4 cells through cell cycle arrest in the accumulation of cells of the sub-G1 apoptotic phase and apoptosis in decreased the population of cells in the S and G2/M phases.

These results were attributed to the F2 fraction in enhanced expression of pro-apoptotic (Bax) in induction cellular apoptosis and attenuated expression of anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) proteins in promoted cancer proliferation.

Interestingly, all fractions also decreased the phosphorylation of AKT, (AKT is an essential component of the PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway) in monitoring skin cancer cell growth and resistance to apoptosis and ERK(components of mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways) in mediated different anti-proliferative events, such as apoptosis, autophagy, and senescence.

Based on the information fonding, Dr. Shebaby WN, the lead author said, " F2 fraction has a remarkable antitumor activity against DMBA/TPA-induced skin carcinogenesis, an effect that may be mediated through inhibition of the MAPK/ERK and PI3K/AKT pathways".

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study led by the University of Surrey in the evaluation of Daucus carota oil extract (DCOE) activity in the inhibition of HaCaT-ras II-4 epidermal squamous cells.

According to the experiment, β-2-himachalen-6-ol isolated from the wild carrot essential oil at dose-dependent decreased in skin cell survival with an IC50 and IC90 of 8 and 30 μg/ml, respectively.

Observation of Flow cytometry analysis also revealed that treatment of β-2-himachalen-6-ol is linearly associated with volume injection, as the dose of 10 μg/ml HC significantly increased the number of cells undergoing late apoptosis (28%), while 25 μg/ml caused a larger cell shift towards late apoptosis (46.6%) and necrosis (39%).

Besides decreasing the phosphorylation of AKT, and ERK as shown in the mentioned above, β-2-himachalen-6-ol also inhibited the significant decrease in protein levels of p53 and Bcl-2 in acting as tumors suppressor, caused by 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)/ 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) and increased p21 and Bax function in cell cycle arrest and activation of apoptosis.

Astonishingly, the application of essential oil extract from wild carrots inhibited skin cancer proliferation and induced apoptosis withing harming the nearby healthy cells in tested mice.

Taken together, the essential oil of carrot and its bioactive derivative may be considered as an adjunct therapy in reduced risk, and progression and used in combination with standard medicine for the treatment of skin cancer.

#GreenTea Speeds Up the Healing Process of #Tendinitis by Improving the Compaction of the Collagen Molecules, Scientists Show

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect on the healing of tendinitis by protecting collagen stability and fibrous connective tissue, some scientists suggested.
Tendinitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of a tendon as a result of overuse, infection or rheumatic disease.

The condition mostly happens to people who have jobs involving repetitive movements. Some

Some researchers suggested that in order to prevent tendinitis, it is better to change activities, or rest and come back to it later.

Most cases of tendinitis can be successfully treated with rest, sometimes with physical therapy.

Intake medication may also have a profound effect on reducing pain. However, they may induce common and serious side effects, depending on the types of medicine.

Please make sure that you understand all the side effects if you are currently taking the medicine for relieving pain.

Most cases of tendinitis are recurrent if the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone are continuously overused due to the occupation

The most common symptoms of tendinitis are pain, tenderness, and mild swelling often described as a dull ache in the affected location particularly, in the limb or joint.

Tendonitis should be treated according to the medical guideline. The untreated condition may cause some complications, including chronic pain in the affected area that may interfere with daily activity and reduce the quality of life. Some untreated tendonitis may cause pain to spread to other parts of the body.

Some patients with untreated tendonitis are also experiencing psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression due to constant pain.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

According to the study of the effect of GT and/or glycine in the diet on tendinitis in Wistar rats, randomly divided into seven groups (G): control group (C); G1 and G4, tendinitis; G2 and G5, tendinitis supplied with GT; and G3 and G6, tendinitis supplied with GT and a glycine diet for 7 or 21 days, respectively, group with tendinitis treated with green tea demonstrated a significant effect in enhanced collagen stability through expression of hydroxyproline in compared to other groups.

Furthermore, GT and glycine alone treated groups showed increased activity of metalloproteinase-2 MMP-2 levels which has been associated with the healing process of the fibrous connective tissue in tendinitis patients.

Compared to control and non-GT treatment groups, the application of green tea or GT+ glycine group displayed statistical significance in the decreased muscle retardation.

After taking into account all co-founders, Dr. Vieira CP, the lead author said, " GT + a glycine diet has beneficial effects that aid in the recovery process of the tendon after tendinitis".

Interestingly, the study investigated the remodeling effects of green tea and glycine in the myotendinous junction (MTJ) of male Wistar rats with tendinitis, randomly divided into five groups: animals without tendinitis, and animals with tendinitis; animals with tendinitis supplied with green tea; animals with tendinitis supplied with a glycine diet; animals with tendinitis supplied with a green tea and glycine diet, a researcher found that all treatment groups exerted a profound effect in regulated the activity of metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 with function in remodeling the tendon after tendinitis, MMP-8 and -9 which are associated to remodeling tissue expression in the disease progression and induced the synthesis of type I collagen regulation by cell spreading, platelet-derived growth factor and interactions with collagen fibers.

Moreover, rats groups treated above application also demonstrated an increase of glycosaminoglycans, in stimulating the regenerative processes, while maintaining host cell characteristics and function and non-collagenous proteins in modulated the development of fine fibrils presented in collagen fibers of connective tissue

Additionally, the combination of green tea and glycine also modulated the inflammatory process through the stimulated production of anti-inflammatory factors and induced the synthesis of the elements, such as extracellular matrix involved in the post-lesion recovery of the tissue.

These results indicated that recovery from an injured tendon can be achieved by improving the compaction of the collagen molecules and inducing the assembly of early collagen fibers.

After taking into account all cofounders, researchers, and colleagues at the Anat Rec said, "Each region of the inflamed tendon can exhibit different responses during the treatment and therefore, modify its extracellular matrix components to facilitate recovery and repair".

The findings suggested that green tea may be considered a functional food for speeding up the healing of tendinitis.

However, intake of supplements for the treatment of tendinitis should be taken with exceptional care in the prevention of acute liver toxicity.

#Fennel Reduces the Severity of Dysmenorrhea Through Its #Antispasmodic Activity, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Noroton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reducing pain through its anti-antispasmodic property, some scientists suggested.

Anti-antispasmodic activity is an action that relieves, prevents, or lowers the incidence of muscle spasms, especially those of adnominal muscle in the uterus and smooth muscle such as in the bowel wall.

Certain hormones which have the function of controlling muscle contraction and relaxation are found to associate with the intensity of muscle spasms, if overexpressed.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, depressant agent to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the findings, the natural antispasmodic ingredients with little or no side effects, Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, and colleagues launched an investigation to compare doses of 2.5 and 10.0 mL/L of alcoholic extract with other Germanic medicinal plants, including Melissa officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla, Carum carvi, and Citrus aurantium.

The experiment was carried out on guinea pig ileum by using acetylcholine and histamine as spasmogens.

After taking into all account co and confounders account, researchers found that application-tested doses of alcoholic extract of the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare exert a significant anti-antispasmodic activity by inhibiting the acetylcholine and histamine-induced guinea pig ileal contractions.

Further analysis of the effects of n essential oil obtained from the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare at the doses of 25 μg/ and 10 μg/mL, researchers discovered that the injections also demonstrated a similar as of the extract but through the inhibition of the hormone oxytocin and prostaglandin activities.

Oxytocin and prostaglandin are hormones with a function that causes the contraction of the muscles of the uterus. Over contraction of muscles of the uterus is a major cause of abdominal pain in women.

Additionally, the comparison of the antispasmodic property of 4 different herbal medicine that has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain in Swiss mice, including fennel according to the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also found that all herbs used in the testing display a substantial reduction of abdominal pain without inducing any adverse effects.

In the experiment carried out on the guinea pig, the application of fennel also showed significant relaxation in different agonists like histamine and acetylcholine-induced contractions in guinea pig ileum.
Interestingly, in the study to investigate whether oral fennel drop has any effects on primary dysmenorrhea, the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of the uterus, researchers conducted an experiment on sixty college students who suffer from primary dysmenorrhea.

The participants were randomly assigned to two groups and followed up for two cycles. The treatment group was given fennel drop and the control group was given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive pills.

After assessing the final report, researchers suggested that both groups exert a clinically significant effect in reducing pain. However, the comparison of bleeding severity in the study group before and after the intervention on the first day, second day, third day, fourth day, and fifth day was 0.948, 0.330, 0.508, 0.583, and 0.890, respectively.

Dr. Bokaie M, the lead scientist said, "Fennel can be effective in reducing the severity of dysmenorrhea, but it has an unpleasant taste in view of most of the volunteers".

Taken together, fennel may be considered a secondary and therapeutical form of treatment in reducing pain caused by the overexpression of hormones that control the muscles' contraction through its antispasmodic activity.

#Yoga Intervention in the Reduction of Symptoms and Treatment of #NeurologicalDisorders, Accoring to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga, an integrated form of exercise may be used for reduced risk and treatment of neurological disorders, some scientists suggested.

Neurological disorders are medical conditions characterized by any disorder of the nervous system caused by structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities.

There are many forms of neurological disorders. The most common types of the disease include neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. multiple sclerosis and Migraines.

According to the Medical Press, globally, the burden of neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy, etc) has increased substantially over the past 25 years. These may be the results of over 25 years of economic expansion that have increased the living standard of billion of people in the Southeast Asian region.

Today, people who have made a lot of money in that region have abandoned the traditional diet with abundant vegetables and fruits and replaced them with the Western diet which is considered as a risk factor for neurological disorders.

A new report from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that neurological disorders, ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer's disease, from stroke to a headache, affect up to one billion people worldwide. And, An estimated 6.8 million people die every year as a result of neurological disorders.

In Europe alone, neurological diseases cost the healthcare system estimation of 139 billion euros in 2004.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

In a review of the literature published online, including randomized, controlled trials with yoga as the central component of the intervention, researchers filed the following reports
* 6 selected trials expressed a significant effect of yoga lessons in reduced symptoms and treatment of neurological disorders
* 10 out of 13 trials chosen indicated a positive effect in the use of yoga as an ancillary treatment of in patients with psychiatric disorders.

Researchers also note that Trials were excluded in this review if yoga was not the central component of the intervention.

These results suggested that long-term participation in yoga affects the adrenal gland of the central nervous system in the production of hormones that have strong implications for stress and anxiety, such as serotonin, adrenaline, and cortisol.

Furthermore, yoga meditation and posture also enhanced blood circulation to the central nervous system, thus reducing the risk of neurological disorders.

Also, the review of the article used comprehensive scientific, evidence-based studies to analyze the efficacy of various basic and applied aspects of yoga in disease prevention and health promotion, particularly in neurological disorders from various resources including PubMed, Ovid, MD-Consult, USC, and U.C.L.A. libraries, researchers at the USC, after adjusting to other co confound factors, indicated that patients who participated in the class of yoga demonstrate statistically encouraging physiological and psychological improvements in the aforementioned neurological disorders.

Additionally, in the investigation promotion of mind-body medicine for health promotion, disease prevention, and as a possible treatment modality for neurological disorders, researchers at the S-VYASA University performed a comprehensive search in PubMed/Medline found that 94 out of 700 examine demonstrated a strong improvement in patients with various neurological disorders

Martin Jones, the lead author of the article Yoga for Neurological Health, For those with MS, Parkinson's, or Other Neurological Disorders wrote, " (Yoga) Exercises that train neuromuscular coordination, as well as draw vitality and strength to all parts of the body" and "Techniques to draw on the healing aspects of the parasympathetic (“rest and repose”) nervous system and meditation to retrain the brain and create more efficient pathways to the pre-frontal lobes, the most highly evolved part of our nervous system, where we experience our most inspired, creative thinking and elevated levels of consciousness".

Based on the information collected, there is no doubt that yoga may be considered a secondary form of exercise used in conjunction with the standard application for reduced symptoms and treatment of neurological disorders

#Habitual #GreenTea Reduces the Risk of Stroke by Protecting Endothelial Function in Blood Circulation, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea is found to consist a therapeutic and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of stroke, some scientists suggested.

Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Stroke is a medical condition of emergency caused by reduced or interrupted blood circulation to the brain, such as blocking artery-induced ischemic stroke and leaking or bursting of a blood vessel precipitated hemorrhagic.

According to statistics, in the US, every year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke, a leading cause of serious and long-term disability.

Evaluation of green tea's effect in the risk of stroke was found to be associated with a certain mechanism involving number of aspects.

The review of medical literature published online suggested that green tea with strong inhibition of high blood pressure, a primary risk factor of stroke through its antioxidant and vasodilative activities induced by phytochemical flavonoids in improved blood circulation to the brain. Although increased acute blood pressure was found in some studies, this acute effect did not translate into significant alterations in ambulatory blood pressure during regular tea consumption.

The impact of tea or catechin consumption precipitated nitric oxide formation, as an essential gas signal molecule to protect the brain against in facilitated ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke by relaxed vascular smooth muscle cells and induced vasodilatation through regulating network of a blood vessel and peripheral nerve tissues.

Amazingly, catechin also reduced NO levels through endothelial function by increased platelet aggression in post-stroke.

In fact, green tea theanine, a bioactive chemical constituents also found to process anti stroke development through stimulating NO production of the cells in the inner wall of arteries in reduced risk of vascular constriction and promoting blood circulation, thus decreasing the risk of an artery-blocking clots, a major cause of stroke,

Further analysis also discovered that glutamate molecules found in theanine may also play an important role in attenuating the risk of stroke through the neuroprotective effect of decreased middle cerebral artery occlusion and cerebral infarction caused by blocking or narrowing the arteries in supplying blood and oxygen to the brain.

According to the study of 82 369 Japanese (aged 45-74 years; without cardiovascular disease [CVD] or cancer in 1995 and 1998 for Cohort I and II, respectively) received 13 years of mean follow-up through the end of 2007. green tea consumption of green tea 2 to 3 and ≥ 4 cups/d showed a significant effect in reduced risk of stroke with the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios of 0.86 (0.78-0.95) and 0.80 (0.73-0.89), respectively in compared to non drinkers. And Higher green tea consumption reduced the risks of stroke subtypes, especially in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Other researchers suggested that green tea efficacy in reduced risk of stroke may be also associated to antioxidant effect in protection of endothelial function in blood circulation by reduced high blood cholesterol induced plaque build-up in the arteries in blocking blood flow to the brain, particularly in reactive oxygen species (ROS) precipitation of lipid peroxidation.

The effect of green tea in reduced insulin resistance in healthy adults may also contribute to lower risk of stroke, according to the cohort of 1509 nondiabetic participants from the Northern Manhattan Study (mean [SD] age, 11 [10] years; 64.2% women; 58.9% Hispanics).

Dr. Arab L said, "Regardless of their country of origin, individuals consuming >or=3 cups of tea per day had a 21% lower risk of stroke than those consuming <1 cup per day (absolute risk reduction, 0.79; CI, 0.73 to 0.85). The proportion of heterogeneity not explained by chance alone was 23.8%".

The information findings suggested that habitual green tea consumption may have therapeutic in reducing the risk of stroke development in the general population.

#Healthyfood #Celery and #Celeryseed Proytect the Stomach Against the Risk of #AtrophicGastritis and #GastricCancer, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food which has a unique function in protecting the stomach against the onset of atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, some studies suggested.

Atrophic gastritis is a condition of loss of gastric glandular cells caused by long-term inflammation of the stomach mucous membrane (mucosa).

Loss of the gastric glandular cells in the long term eventually is replaced by intestinal and fibrous tissues.

Gastric cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular and uncontrollable cell growth in the stomach lining in the beginning. At the advanced stage, the malignant cells can travel a distance away through blood and fluid circulation to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Researchers do not know why some people with the same health condition are susceptible to the risk of gastric cancer, while others do not. The exact causes of gastric cancer are also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that Age, diet, and stomach disease, such as can increase the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer share the common symptoms of stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite,... and indigestion. However, common symptoms of unexpected weight loss and stomach ulcers can only be found in gastric cancer while iron deficiency anemia is found in the majority of patients with atrophic gastritis.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please see your doctor to rule out gastric cancer possibility.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belongings to the family Apiaceae, cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.

Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

In vitro, with an aim to find the natural ingredient from food sources for treatment of atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer without inducing adverse effects, researchers conducted an experiment, including 5-8 week-old Mongolian gerbils inoculated with Helicobacter pylori for four weeks without (atrophic gastritis group) or with N'-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitroso-guanidine (MNNG) (gastric cancer group) in drinking water, and were then rested for two weeks.

During the 7th-32th (atrophic gastritis group) or the 7th-52th (gastric cancer group) weeks were given various doses (0-60 mg/kgbw/day) of apigenin, a major bioactive compound isolated from celery.

Observation at the end of the 32nd (atrophic gastritis group) or the 52nd (atrophic gastritis group) week, after sacrificing, researchers found that
*Application of Apigenin at the doses range from 30-60 mg/kgbw/day effectively decreased atrophic gastritis (atrophic gastritis group) and dysplasia/gastric cancer (gastric cancer group).

* Apigenin treatment (60 mg/kgbw/day) significantly decreased Helicobacter pylori colonization and Helicobacter pylori-induced histological changes of neutrophil and monocyte infiltrations and atrophic gastritis in both atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer.

These results suggested that apigenin isolated from celery processes has a remarkable ability to inhibit Helicobacter pylori-induced atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer progression as well as possessing potent anti-gastric cancer activity.

Additionally, the study finding of a natural compound that processes mechanisms of apoptosis in tumor cells for tumor therapy and cancer molecular biology and inhibits loss of cell cycle control, leading to uncontrolled proliferation in healthy cells, suggested that celery seed extract (CSE), in a dose- and time-dependent manner, exhibited an anti-proliferation effect on human gastric cancer BGC-823 cells, through cell cycle arrest and apoptosis-related proteins.

Dr. Gao LL, the lead scientist said, at the end of the experiment, "The molecular determinants inhibition of cell proliferation, as well as apoptosis of CSE, may be associated with cycle arrest in the S phase".

Furthermore, Celery seed oil, in benzo[a]pyrene- (BP) induced forestomach cancer in mice, the chemical constituents. 3-n-butylphthalide and sedanolide showed to reduce tumor incidence from 68% to 30% and 11%, and 67% and 83% in tumor multiplicity, respectively.

These results suggest that phthalides, as a class of bioactive natural products occurring in edible umbelliferous plants, may be effective chemopreventive agents for cancer.

Moreover, in the differentiation of the nutritional epidemiology of gastric cancer in 293 cases and neighborhood-, age-, and sex-matched controls in communities throughout the counties of Niagara, Monroe, and Erie in western New York researchers discovered that ingestion of carotene from raw vegetables (including celery, cucumbers, carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, and onions), as well as with the increased use of low-temperature food storage exerts a significant inhibition of oxidation products that could act as carcinogens in the stomach.

Taken together, celery whole food and celery seed containing high amounts of bioactive Apigenin and phthalide respectively may be used to prevent and treat atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer without no adverse effects.

#Asparagus Regulates Innate and Adaptive Immunity Against Viral, some Bacterial, and Protozoal Infections, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Asparagus may have a profound effect to stimulate the immune system in fighting against foreign invasion, some scientists suggested.

Immunomodulators are agents that have unique functions to modify the immune response or the functioning of the immune system such as the stimulation of antibody formation or the inhibition of abnormal white blood cell activity.

In other words, immunomodulation processed immunotherapy, in which immune responses are induced depending on the body's needs.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play important roles in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.

The herb has been used in early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties. Asparagus racemosus Linn. (Fam. Liliaceae) is considered as an ethnopharmacologically acclaimed Ayurvedic medicinal plant that may enhance immune function.

According to the study, the application of an aqueous extract of A. racemosus (ARC) showed a dose-related stimulation of NK cell activity.

More precisely, ARC demonstrated a higher immune stimulatory activity up to 51.8% at a dose of 25 μg/ml.

Furthermore, in the search for natural immunomodulatory agents where decrease of parasitic burden and simultaneous enhancement of adaptive immunity can be achieved in replacement of current drugs for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis with side effect of suppressing immune function during the course of infection, researchers at the Panjab University, launched an investigation based on combination of Asparagus racemosus, an immunomodulatory drug, in combination with cisplatin against Leishmania donovani infected BALB/c mice.

Experiential mice were given A. racemosus (650 mg/kg b.wt./day for 15 days, orally) in combination with cisplatin (5 mg/kg b.wt./day for 5 days, intraperitoneally) with an aim to enhance the clearance of parasites determined by Giemsa-stained liver impression smears.

At the end of the study, researchers found that
* Application of combination group achieved increased production of disease-resolving Th-1 response (IFN-gamma, IL-2), heightened DTH (delayed type hypersensitivity) response, and augmented levels of IgG2a

IFNγ, or type II interferon, is a cytokine that plays an important role in regulating innate and adaptive immunity against viral, some bacterial, and protozoal infections

Interleukin-2 (IL-2), a type of inflammatory cytokine with a function that signals molecules in the immune system plays a critical role to regulate the activities of white blood cells in response to immunity.

Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) is an inflammatory response of immunity that develops within 24 to 72 hours after exposure to an antigen.

IgG2a is an antibody produced during an immune response.
* The combined application not only provided an enhanced protective immune response but also resulted in remarkably improved kidney and liver function. the human detoxed organs.

Moreover, researchers also discovered, the combined application also boosts and restores both cellular and humoral immunity in L. donovani-infected BALB/c mice.

Dr. Sachdeva H, the lead author after taking into account co and confounders said, "....in view of severe immunosuppression in visceral leishmaniasis, a better and effective strategy for optimum efficacy of future antileishmanial drugs would direct not only killing of the parasite by the drug but also a simultaneous generation of immunity against the disease".

Taking it all together, herbal Asparagus used alone or combined with cisplatin may have a strong effect in boosting the immune system against foreign invasion through immunomodulatory activity.
