#GreenTea Inhibits the Onset of #GastricUlcer Through its Antioxidant Activity, According to Studies

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of gastric ulcer, some scientists suggested.
Gastric ulcers are sores that develop in the lining of the stomach as a result of bacterial infection or by overproduction of stomach acid. In other words, gastric ulcer is a condition characterized by open sores developed in the stomach, affecting the function of the stomach.

There are a set of factors that cause a gastric ulcer, including the infection of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), frequent use of anti-inflammatory medicine, aging, smoking and excessive alcohol drinking

Some researchers suggested that people who have radiation therapy for stomach cancer are also at a higher risk to gastric ulcer development.


According to the study "Are genetic influences on peptic ulcer dependent or independent of genetic influences for Helicobacter pylori infection?" by the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine. "Genetic influences are of moderate importance for liability to peptic ulcer disease. Genetic influences for peptic ulcer are independent of genetic influences important for acquiring H. pylori infection".

Additional analysis also suggested that rats fed with green tea (GEt) improved the capacity of mucin content in gastric juice which has been found at reduced levels in rats with an ulcer after infection with acetic acid.

Interestingly, injection of green tea (GEt) also decreased inflammatory infiltration of Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) which has been used as biomarkers in the measurement of severity in some diseases including gastric ulcer.


Importantly, the application did not alter gastric acid secretion and induced acute toxicity.

Dr. Borato DG, the lead author, after taking into account the con-founders said, "GEt had a pronounced antiulcer effect, possibly through maintenance of mucin content and reduction of inflammation and oxidative stress".

Other polyphenol compound L-Theanine, isolated from green tea on NSAID (indomethacin)-induced maximum ulceration in the stomach on the third day at dose of 18 mg/kg inhibited the expression of the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the induction of lipid peroxidation, oxidation and protein carbonylation which is considered one of the most harmful irreversible oxidative protein that cause damage to the stomach.

The application also reduced expression of type 1 T helper (Th1) cells in the production of inflammatory cytokines, interferon-gamma, interleukin (IL)-2, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta, in the facilitated immune response in exhibiting inflammation in the acute stomach damage infection.

Additionally, L-Theanine also increased the levels of total thiol in the stomach tissue, and mucin content in the gastric juice. The enhanced antioxidant levels not only improve digestion but also protect the stomach against damage by foreign substances.

Moreover, at a higher dose of 40 mg/kg b.w. At 10 mg/kg b.w., Dr. Chatterjee S, the lead author said, "L-theanine significantly alleviated the adverse oxidative effect of indomethacin through enhanced synthesis of PGE2 by modulation of cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 [COX-1 and COX-2] expression, Th1/Th2 cytokine balance, and restoration of cellular antioxidant status at the gastric ulcer margin".

Taken together, tea with abundant bioactive polyphenols may be considered functional food for the treatment of gastric ulcers without causing any adverse effects.

However, high doses and long-term applications of green tea supplements were associated with acute liver toxicity.

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of prostate cancer, some scientists suggested.

Prostate cancer is a condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in prostate tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may infect other healthy tissue and organ a distance away from the original site.

Moreover, the application of lycopene also displayed a strong effect in inhibiting the proliferation of androgen-dependent prostateLNCaP cancer cells through the activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) with the function to act as a tumor suppressor in prostate cells due to its activity in the induction of agonist ligands in inhibited growth of prostate cancer cells.

Additionally, the phytochemical also expressed a significant activity in exhibiting the liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) in reducing the proliferation of human oral cancer cells by promoting cell cycle arrest through increased expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27, a tumor suppressor and promoted function of extracellular ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1) pathway in inhibited tumor growth through modulation of macrophage function within the tumor, and in establishing a link between cholesterol homeostasis and cancer.

Application of lycopene (10 μM) in the presence of a specific antagonist of PPARγ (GW9662) or LXRα (GGPP) exerted a huge effect in reduced liver X receptor α knockdown in the induction of resistance against LXRα in promoted the proliferation of DU145 cells.

Interestingly, lycopene in combination with the LXRα agonist T0901317, a potent chemical compound used in assays, exhibited anti-prostate cell proliferative activity through interaction with protein expression of PPARγ, LXRα, and ABCA1 in initiated cancer cell apoptosis.

In conclusion, Dr. Yang CM, the lead author said, "These results demonstrate that lycopene can inhibit DU145 cell proliferation via PPARγ-LXRα-ABCA1 pathway and that lycopene and T0901317 exhibit synergistic effects".


The result findings strongly suggested that long-term intake of carrots in moderate amounts may have substantial implications in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. But Intake of carrot supplements should be taken with care to prevent acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes some underline mechanisms in enhancing the rate of fertility, some studies suggested.

In male infertility, according to a case-control study conducted by Dr. Buiatti E and colleagues, about coffee and alcohol consumption, smoking habits, x-ray exposure, usual sitting posture, drug consumption, other nonoccupational risk factors, socioeconomic status, education level, and occupational history are some of the prevalent risk factors associated to male infertility.

And, the high relative risk was associated with (a) occupation in the radioelectric industry, (b) non sedentary clerical workers, (c) clerical work in the typographic industry, and (d) occupation in the textile industry,


Cinnamon, a kitchen spice in many cultures, may be best known for its effectiveness in reducing the levels of blood glucose in diabetics and lipid peroxidation through its antioxidant activity(4).

In a total of 45 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, randomized, 26 women completed 3 months of the study, and 17 women completed the entire 6 months of the study, researchers showed,
* Application of cinnamon exerts a positive effect in the improvement of menstrual cyclicity associated with luteal phase progesterone levels and ovulatory menses without altering insulin resistance or serum androgen levels

* Cinnamaldehyde, a major chemical compound of cinnamon enhances fertility through selectively induced progesterone production and inhibits the production of testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone in human adrenal cells.

* Further differentiation, suggested that cinnamon extract not only reduces insulin resistance in vitro and in vivo by increasing phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase activity with insulin stimulation in the insulin signaling pathway but also improves menstrual cyclicity in female-induced PCOs.

Moreover, in the infertile male rat study conducted by Fırat University, long-term cinnamon bark oil(CPO) improved the effect on testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance and sperm quality by significantly decreasing the abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic germ cell count.

Interestingly, in the study to investigate the likelihood of detrimental effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) on the male reproductive system through oxidative stress mechanism and also the protective effects of cinnamon bark oil (CBO), researchers at the Firat University conducted an experiment including 28 healthy male Wistar rats.

The tested subjects were divided into four groups, seven rats in each. Group 1 received only olive oil daily; group 2 was treated with 100 mg kg(-1) CBO daily; group 3 was treated with only 0.25 ml kg(-1) CCl4 weekly, and group 4 received weekly CCl4 + daily CBO.

All administrations were made by the intragastric catheter and maintained for 10 weeks.

In the final report, researchers suggested that
* CCl4 administration caused significant decreases in body and reproductive organ weights, testicular catalase (CAT) activity, sperm motility and concentration, and significant increases in lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, abnormal sperm rate, and apoptotic index along with some histopathological damages compared with the control group.

* Pretreatment of CBO following the administration of CCl4 significant improvements in absolute weights of testis and epididymis, all sperm quality parameters, LPO level, apoptotic index, and testicular histopathological structure Cl4, compared to the group given CCl4 only.


Taken together, Cinnamon may be effective in promoting fertility in both sexes through enhancing the menstrual cycle in women and improving sperm performance in men.

In the comparison of the antibacterial effect against a wide range of foodborne Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, yeasts, and molds by an agar well diffusion method in five different varieties of Ocimum basilicum L. plants, including Anise, researchers found that application of Anise essential oil exhibited a strong effect in decreased expression the acid-tolerant microorganisms including Lactobacillus curvatus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, synergistically, compared to mixtures of the predominant components of pure linalool and methyl chavicol.

In a tomato juice medium, Anise oil injection also exerted antibacterial activity at doses of 0·1% and 1% Anise oil, against Lact. curvatus and S. cerevisiae, respectively.

The inhibitory effect of Anise oil was substantially higher, in comparison to the mixtures of the predominant components of pure linalool and methyl chavicol, against the acid-tolerant organisms, Lactobacillus curvatus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, examined in broth by an indirect impedance method.

Furthermore, essential oil extracted from the Anise seed used alone or combined with essential oil extracted from from aerial parts of Thymus vulgaris, also displayed a significant effect in inhibiting nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pimpinella anisum essential oils methanol extracts at doses of MIC 15.6 and 62.5mug/ml) were particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Proteus vulgaris.

Some researchers suggested that Anise's antibacterial effect probably was attributed to the bioactive major compound anethole in the modulation of immunity.

According to some studies, the application of essential oil in mice model, trans-anethole and estragole, a derivative of anethole improved the host immunity by reducing the expression of hypersensitivity response and increasing the numbers of white blood cells(leucocytes) in the circulatory system with function in counteracting foreign substances and diseases.


Further differentiation also found that trans-anethole improved the immune function in stimulating the transformation of B cells into plasma cells in the produced and secreted antibodies whether a foreign substance was scented.

Additionally, anethole isolated from Anise also exhibited a strong effect in protecting the immunity against mice fed with cyclophosphamide to induced chemo suppression of immunity.

Indeed, an Anise essential oil demonstrated a significant effect in the immune responses by modulating the levels of immune-inflammatory factors interleukins (IL6, IL8, and IL10) and tumor necrosis factor(TNFα ) against infectious microorganism in initiating the acute phase of infection.

Additionally, in animal tested with E. acervulina-infected, application of essential oil isolated from Anise also increased expression of lymphocytes in the infectious intestinal area.

Taken together, the findings suggested that Anise essential oil including the bioactive phytochemical anethole may be used as an antibacterial agent, particularly in the externally acute phase of infection.

#Greentea's Theanine Inhibits the Onset of #Manic and #Depressive #Episodes in #BipolarDisorder, Researchers Find

Green tea's major bioactive theanine may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the onset of bipolar disorder, some scientists suggested.
Bipolar disorder is a condition of brain disorder characterized by unusual shifting mood, energy, activity levels, and interfering the brain function in carrying out day-to-day tasks.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the conditions can be classified in to
* Bipolar I disorder with severe manic episodes last at least 7 days, most people with bipolar I disorder needs immediate hospital care.

* Bipolar II disorder is characterized by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.

* Cyclothymic disorder also known as cyclothymia is a condition with numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that lasting for at least 2 years.

Additionally, in a study by Portland VA Medical Center of adults with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar disorder who were maintained on antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications randomized to supplemental EGCG or placebo including a total of 34 participants (17 EGCG, 17 placebo) and 25 participants (14 EGCG, 11 placebo), researchers showed that

* Both treatment groups showed significant reductions in psychotic, depressive, and anxiety symptoms from baseline to end of treatment.

* However, EGCG did not significantly affect psychiatric symptoms or inflammatory markers, as compared with placebo.

* Adverse effects were mild and comparable between groups.


The finding indicated that green tea extract EGCG exerts an insignificant effect on psychiatric symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder compared to Theanine, another major ingredient in green and black tea.

Taken together, green and black tea major bioactive theanine may be considered a secondary therapy in protecting the brain against manic and depressive episode in patients with bipolar disorder.

#GreenTea's #EGCG Shows Multifunctional Therapeutic Effects on #AmyotrophicLateralSclerosis in Vivos, Researchers Say

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), some scientists suggested.

Green tea is a precious drink that processed a number of health benefits and is known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a specific disease that involved the death of neurons in controlling voluntary muscles.

According to the research published by Hanyang University, the administration of green tea Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) exerted a neuroprotective effect in reduced oxidative stress in orchestrated death of neurons.

In the evaluation of green tea EGCG in risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in human G93A(with function is responsible for destroying free superoxide radicals in the body) mutated Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene in mice model, scientists found that

application of green tea EGCG at doses of 1.5, 2.9, and 5.8 microg/g body weight, dissolved in 0.5 ml of 0.9% sterile NaCl intraorally every day after 60 days of age demonstrate significant effects in prolonged symptom onset and life span of ALS mice through preserved more survival and attenuated death signals.


The result of the increased life span of mutated gene mice was attributed to the increased antioxidant activity of green tea in inhibiting the levels of ROS in reduced cytotoxicity in initiated death of neurons in controlling voluntary muscles.

Further analysis of the effect of green tea in mutated SOD1-G93A in transgenic mice and wild-type mice randomly divided into EGCG-treated groups (10 mg/kg, p.o) and vehicle-treated control groups to assess the motor function, starting at the age of 70 days researchers found that injection of green tea treatment mice displays a strong effect in delayed the onset of disease, and extended life span, similar to those in the Hanyang study.

Additional differentiation also indicated that the green tea treatment group stimulated the production of a number of new motor neurons compared to control mice,

Interestingly, the application also decreased the over-expression of microglial activation in initiating the inflammatory response due to neuronal damage and removed the damaged cells caused by phagocytosis production.

Prolonged and over-expression of inflammatory cytokines may increase the risk of neuron damage and in some cases death of the nerve cells.

In in-depth analysis showed that green tea reduced the immunohistochemical reaction of NF-kappaB in response to the neuron damage (by antigens) through stimulated production of pro-inflammatory factors (as an antibody) and cleaved caspase-3 in the induction of neuron apoptosis.

Moreover, the application of green EGCG also expressed a similar result as in other studies in the decreased protein level of iNOS and NF-kappaB in the spinal cords in orchestrated free radical NO levels and inflammatory cytokines in neuron cell death in the spinal cord involving the onset of ALS.

Dr. Xu Z, the lead author after taking into account other co-founders said, "This study provides further evidence that EGCG has multifunctional therapeutic effects in the mouse model of ALS".

These results were supported by the study of the green tea effect on the risk of Lou Gehrig's disease by reviewing the food selection of a 44-item food frequency questionnaire of 1 million men and women enrolled and conducted in 1989 through 2002 for ALS mortality.

According to the results of the study, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health suggested that green tea injection is associated with a reduced mortality rate of patients.

The information findings suggested that green tea and its bioactive polyphenol Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk and used in combination with standard medicine in delayed progression and treatment of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
