#CaffeinatedCoffee Exerts a Liver Protective Effect against the Onset of #HepaticFibrosis, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee daily and regularly may be considered a functional beverage in blocking the onset and treating liver fibrosis, some scientist suggested.

Hepatic fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. In other words, hepatic fibrosis is a portion of the liver which was affected by scars formation.

The exact causes of liver fibrosis are unknown. However, certain risk factor such as repeated liver injury caused by virus infection, and a blockage in the bile ducts are found to elaborate the onset of liver fibrosis.

Long-term untreated liver fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a condition of severe scarring of the liver and life-threatening liver disease.

The most common scale to grade the stage of liver fibrosis is the METAVIR scoring system. By examing the grade and stage of liver fibrosis of patients, their doctors can now determine the degree of severity to which the patient's liver is affected.

The severity of the grades ranges from A0 to A3:
A0: no activity
A1: mild activity
A2: moderate activity
A3: severe activity

and

The severity of fibrosis stages ranges from F0 to F4:
F0: no fibrosis
F1: portal fibrosis without septa
F2: portal fibrosis with few septa
F3: numerous septa without cirrhosis
F4: cirrhosis, the most severe stage of fibrosis

Coffee, the best popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the examine 910 patients with chronic HCV infection, 98% male and 38% with advanced hepatic fibrosis, researchers filed the following results
* Intake of coffee is lower in the control group, compared to the advanced fibrosis.

* But caffeine intake of higher than 100 mg or more, daily from all sources was found in controls (66.0%) than patients with advanced fibrosis (57.9%).

* Caffeine intake of controls mostly comes from coffee intake.

* Intake of an average daily of 100 mg or more of caffeine (adjusted odds ratio, 0.71; 95% confidence interval, 0.53-0.95; P = .020) was associated with the increased liver protective effect.

The result demonstrated that moderate coffee and coffee caffeine intake of 100 mg may have a protective benefit against the risk of advanced hepatic fibrosis.

Additionally, in the study, using the food-frequency instrument for dietary caffeine consumption to evaluate the relationship between caffeine intake and liver fibrosis in patients undergoing liver biopsy completed a detailed caffeine questionnaire on three occasions over a 6-month period, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), reported the results as follow
1. Daily caffeine consumption of 308 mg = approximately 2.25 cups of coffee equivalents was associated with reduced liver fibrosis.

2. The protective association persisted without changing even after taking into account other factors,

3. Compared to coffee caffeine, other sources of caffeine showed an insignificant effect in decreasing the risk of liver fibrosis.

After making the adjustment from all sources, Dr. Modi AA, the lead author said," A reliable tool for measurement of caffeine consumption demonstrated that caffeine consumption, particularly from regular coffee, above a threshold of approximately 2 coffee-cup equivalents per day, was associated with less severe hepatic fibrosis."

Promisingly, in the study of chronic HBV-infected patients who underwent transient elastography examination in 2006-2008, questionnaire returned from among 1045 patients, 216 (20.7%) patients with advanced fibrosis., researchers also found similar results, compared to other studies.

* The percentage of patients who drank ≥ 1 cup of coffee had advanced fibrosis was 95 (19.0%) , compared with 1.21 (22.2%) patients who drank < 1 cup (P = 0.21).

* Caffeine intake does not affect liver stiffness in chronic HBV-infected patients, compared to the coffee intake

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee intake may have a profound effect in ameliorating the risk of hepatic fibrosis and advanced hepatic fibrosis regardless amount of intake daily.

#StrawberryFruits Process both Cancer-Preventive and Therapeutic Values in Vivos and Vitros, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a type of irregular cell growth that starts either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk in the breast.
There are also rare cases, where breast cancer starts in other areas of the breast.

In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone. The risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown. Researchers do not know, people with the same health conditions and similar family history, some are more susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

However, an increase in aging, a history of breast conditions, such as previous breast cancer, breast density, use of hormone estrogen therapy, being overweight and obese, and excessive alcohol consumption are some major risk factors that can elevate the development of breast cancer.

Furthermore, genetic mutations of certain inherited from the parent such as genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 are also the prevalent risk factors of breast cancer. There is an estimation that 33% of women who carry a harmful mutation in PALB2 will develop breast cancer by age 70 years.

According to the article posted by the National Institute of Health, " Several different tests are available. Some tests look for a specific harmful BRCA1 orBRCA2 gene mutation that has already been identified in another family member. Other tests check for all of the known harmful mutations in both genes. Multigene (panel) testing uses next-generation sequencing to look for harmful mutations in many genes that are associated with an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, at the same time".

If you have a family history of genetic mutation involved in breast cancer, please make sure that you have them checked to rule out the possibility.

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa and belongs to the family Rosaceae.

The fruit has been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.

Epidemiological studies strongly agree that the consumption of berry fruits, including strawberries has beneficial effects on human health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, including breast cancer.

The Indian Institute of Science conducted an experiment to examine whether a methanolic extract of strawberry (MESB) fruits processes anticancer activity in leukemia (CEM) and breast cancer (T47D) cell lines ex vivo and its cancer therapeutic and chemopreventive potential in mice models,
* Mice bearing breast adenocarcinoma with MESB treated by the extract blocked the proliferation of tumor cells in a time-dependent manner.

* Application of the extract also increases lifespan in the cancer-bearing animal model.

* MESB treatment affected tumor cell proliferation by activating apoptosis and did not result in any side effects

* Finally, MESB treatment also induces an intrinsic pathway of apoptosis by activating p73 in breast cancer cells, caused by the mutation of tumor suppressor gene p53.

These results revealed that strawberry fruits possess both cancer-preventive and therapeutic values.

Additionally, in the study to test for anti-breast cancer activity in extracts of six popularly consumed berries--blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and strawberry conducted by the University of California, researchers found that strawberry and other berry extracts exert their ability to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 at concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 micro g/mL.

Moreover, researchers also discovered the apoptosis rate of breast cancer cell killing is increased with increasing concentration of the extract. These findings suggested that strawberry extract may have the potential to kill 100% of breast cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Compared to other extracts, black raspberry, and strawberry extracts showed the most significant pro-apoptotic effects against the breast cell line.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of strawberry anti-breast cancer possibilities.

#AgedGarlicExtract (AGE) Is Effective in Reducing the Blood Pressure of Hypertensive Patients, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a common kitchen spice with the potential in reducing high blood pressure quickly without including any side effects, some studies endorsed.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If it stays high over time it can damage the body in many ways.

The causes of hypertension are unknown. However, researchers do know that acute hypertension is induced by daily stress.

Certain risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, physical inactivity unhealthy diet with high saturated and trans fat, refined products, processed food, and high sugar, and salt intake,...... over time cause your blood pressure to spice up chronically.

Lifestyle choices can also lead to overweight or obese, the risk factors for the early onset of hypertension.

According to the statistic, in the US, over 75 million adults, or 32% have high blood pressure.

In other words, 1 in every 3 American adults has the syndrome. Sadly 44% of the mentioned adults with high blood pressure are not under control.

Uncontrol high blood pressure has long been known as a major risk factor for the development of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.

Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects such as gastrointestinal discomforts, tiredness, weakness, headache.

Some patients who are taking hypertensive medicine over prolonged periods of time may experience symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

In severe cases, intake of antihypertensive drugs for a long term can cause dermatitis, arthritis and anemia and lupus erythematosus-like syndrome, according to the article "Adverse Effects of Antihypertensive Drugs" written by Dr. DWARD D. FREIS, M.D.

If you are currently taking any anti-high blood pressure medications, please make you that you know all the side effects.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia.

The kitchen spice has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

In adult men and women, who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006-2008 to 2012-2014), intake of garlic is associated to reduce the risk of hypertension by up to 26%.

In hypertension of 80-90% of patients with excess glucocorticoid levels, allicin found in garlic attenuated dexamethasone-induced anorexia and loss of total body weight.

A randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial conducted on 56 CVD patients, aged 25 - 75 years old also suggested treatment with garlic-based drugs can be effective for controlling BP in CVD patients and has no interaction with other drugs that CAD patients take, after 3 months of the administration.

Dr. Takashima M the lead author at the Wakunaga Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd said, "Aged garlic extract (AGE) is effective in reducing the blood pressure of hypertensive patients,......AGE-induced the concentration-dependent vasorelaxation of isolated rat aortic rings that had been precontracted with norepinephrine"

In fact, The traditional Chinese medicine, food therapy, and hypertension control, all recommended that garlic is of the food to be used for hypertension control, according to a statistical analysis of antihypertensive foods recommended in 20 books on the application of food therapy for hypertension control.

If you can control your diet, make changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, you could do just fine without the drugs,

Taken together, garlic may be used as preventive and controlling effects for patients with or without high blood pressure. Some researchers insisted that garlic anti hypertension effect may result from its anticoagulant property.

#Revactin Containing #Ginger, #Muirapuama, and #Paulliniacupana Shows a Strong Effect on #ErectileDysfunction, #IntercourseSatisfaction, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of erectile dysfunction with no side effects, according to a study.
Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which a man can not get or keep an erection to have sexual intercourse, affecting self-confidence and contributing to relationship problems.

According to the statistics provided by the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, erectile dysfunction increased with age, affecting 40% and 70% of men in the age group of 40 and 70, respectively.

In other words, the prevalence of complete ED increased from 5% at age 40 to 15% at age 70. 150 million men worldwide have ED.

Age, hypertension, use of anti-hypertensive drugs, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and daily stress at home and work have been found to associate with the prevalent risk of ED.

Some researchers suggested the prevalence of ED may be correlated to widespread obesity in the Western world.

Dr. Skrypnik D, the lead scientist said, "In The United States it (obesity) causes more than 300 000 deaths per year. It leads to many complications, such as ischemic heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and abnormal carbohydrate metabolism".

And, "Obesity is also an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction in men. 79% of men presenting erectile disorders have a BMI of 25 kg/m2 or greater. BMI in the range 25-30 kg/m2 is associated with 1,5 times, and in the range of over 30 kg/m2 with a 3 times greater risk of sexual dysfunction".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction with no side effects, researchers examined the effects of oral administration of Revactin twice daily (total daily dose of 500 mg of ginger root, Muira puama, and Paullinia cupana and 1,600 mg of L-citrulline in 54 middle-aged men with erectile dysfunction.

Based on the results from the complete IIEF-15 questionnaire [domains: erectile function (EF), orgasmic function (OF), sexual desire (SD), intercourse satisfaction (IS), overall satisfaction (OS)] at baseline (B), 1 month (M1), 2 months (M2) and 3 months (M3) and report any side effects, Revactin exerted a strong effect on the increase in median domain scores of OF, SD, IS, OS over 3 months compared to baseline median scores.

However, after taking other factors into account, statistical significance was found only in the EF, IS, and OS median domain scores.

5 patients in the study showed the reported treatment side effects (e.g., dyspepsia, heartburn, migraine) and none were considered severe.

Overall, approximately 50% of the patients reported a significant improvement in EF (P<0.05), compared to baseline.

Dr. Nguyen S, the lead scientist said, "Revactin®, a combination of 3 nutraceuticals packaged with L-citrulline, appears to have the same excellent safety profile known for each of its individual four components".

Taken together, ginger combined with other herbal medicines may be considered functional alternatives for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea's Polyphenols Reduce the Risk of Death in Patients with Pneumonia, throught Antiinflammatory Activities, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in inhibiting the onset of pneumonia, some scientists suggested.
Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. The disease may be contagious, as it can spread from person to person, depending on the types of infectious pathogens.

However, pneumonia induced by fungi passed from the environment to humans is not contagious from person to person.

Bacteria Gram-positive cocci. Streptococcus pneumonia is the most cause of community-acquired pneumonia in adults and Haemophilus influenza is the second most common cause of bacterial pneumonia.

Additionally, people who have a weakened immune system, are hospitalized or on a ventilator. and smoking is most likely to be infected with the disease.

Certain chronic medical conditions including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, structural lung disease, and heart disease are found to associate with an increased risk of pneumonia.

The common symptoms include chest pain when you breathe or cough, persistent coughing, and fatigue. fever, sweating, and shaking chills. If you are over the age of 50, you may also have the symptoms of confusion or changes in mental awareness

According to the statistic, the disease affects over approximately 450 million people a year, in all parts of the world.

Green tea is a precious drink processed number of health benefit known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation of green tea bioactive polyphenol catechins activity in the inhibition of infectious agents, researchers at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine launched a population-based cohort study, with follow-up from 1995 to 2006, using the database of National Health Insurance beneficiaries in Japan (19,079 men and 21,493 women aged 40-79 y).

Participants with missing reports of green tea consumption and a history of cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke, and extreme daily energy intake at baseline were excluded.

The comparison of green tea intake and the risk of death in patients with inflammatory pneumonia was analyzed according to the Cox proportional hazards regression analysis.

According to the review, after 12 years of follow-up, researchers found that participants who drink <1, 1-2 cups/d, 3-4 and > or =5 cups/d expressed a reduced risk of the hazard of 1, 0.59, 0.55, 0.53, respectively.

These results indicated that green tea intake was associated with a significantly lower risk of death in patients with pneumonia.

Also, the results of the efficacy of green tea increased substantially and linearly to the number of cups consumed per day.

Further analysis to confirm the inhibitory effects of tea polyphenols on Chlamydia trachomatis and C. pneumonia. In vitro, researchers at the Saitama Medical School, Iruma conducted an experiment of injection of tea polyphenols, Polyphenon 70S into Chlamydial strains including C. trachomatis D/UW-3/Cx and L(2)/434/Bu, and C. pneumonia AR-39 and AC-43 strains cultivated in cells and HL cells.

At the final phase of the experiment, researchers indicated that in the pre-inoculation method, the application of Polyphenon 70S Completely inhibits both straits without inducing any adverse effects.

However, in the post-inoculation method, injection of Polyphenon 70S at a dose of 0.5 mg/ml demonstrated no inclusive effect against C. trachomatis but induced toxicity to HeLa229 cells and HL cells at a concentration of 0.25 mg/ml.

Additional differentiation concluded that the application of tea polyphenols may be considered as a potential topical usage.

Interestingly, in the study to clarify the in vitro effect of EGCG on C. pneumonia mediated IgE responses by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in asthma by using PBMC from subjects with asthma and non-asthmatic controls incubated with C. pneumonia and cultured for 10 days ±EGCG (0.5, 5.0, 50 ng/mL), with IgE levels of PBMC from non-asthmatics of <2.0 ng/mL) at baseline, scientists showed that application of EGCG (0.5-50 ng/mL) displays a significant inhibitory effect of PBMC from the asthma patient, by suppressing the IgE production in a dose-dependent manner (10-30%), compared to no EGCG treatment group.

More importantly, the injection of green tea EGCG exerted an insignificant effect against PBMC from non-asthmatics incubated with C. pneumoniae as the IgE levels are undetectable (<2.0 ng/mL).

These results suggest that green tea EGCG demonstrated a cell protective activity against bacterial invasion through its cytotoxicity without causing harm to nearby healthy cells.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered a functional food in amelioration of the risk and treatment of pneumonia. Intake of green tea as a supplement should be taken with extreme care, as acute liver toxicity was reported in a number of cases.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the beverage during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of green tea anti-pneumonia possibilities.

#Phytochemical #Allyl isothiocyanate Exhibits Significantly Decreased Proliferation and Viability on #BrainMalignant Glioma, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be the next pharmacotherapeutic target to identify the chemo drug for the treatment of brain cancer without inducing any side effects.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.

Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originated are not very common.

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

Most brain types of brain cancer in older adults ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is rare and slow growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.

Meningiomas, are the most common type of benign brain tumor in the age group 40-50s. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian cancer society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall. Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.

The exact causes of brain cancer are debatable. Researchers do not know why people with the same health conditions, and family history, are at a higher risk to develop brain cancer while others do not.

Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.

Most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty and persistent pain

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor immediately to rule out brain cancer possibility.

Allyl isothiocyanate is a phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.

Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cell growth that surrounds and support neurons, with a small number that may be caused by a gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals.

Examining the side effects of Allyl isothiocyanate from the available data suggests that urinary concentrations of AITC equivalent are at least ten times higher than in the plasma, and tissue levels of AITC equivalent in the urinary bladder were 14-79 times higher than in other organs after oral AITC administration to rats for the treatment of cancer.

These results indicated AITC may be most effective in the bladder as a cancer chemopreventive compound, as AITC at high-dose levels exhibited a low degree of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in animal cancer studies.

Once again, the experiment reaffirmed the effect of AITC in the exhibition of many desirable attributes of a cancer chemopreventive agent.
In the reassessment of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in the reduced risk of cancer, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of the phytochemical in brain cancer cells.

Compared to other cancer cell line inhibition, AITC significantly decreased the proliferation and viability of human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 9.25+/-0.69 microM for 24 h-treatment.

In cell differentiated assay, AITC induced significant G2/M arrest and sub-G1 phase (apoptotic population) in GBM 8401 cells.

AITC markedly reduced the CDK1/cyclin B activity and protein levels which are responsible for cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Furthermore, AITC-induced apoptotic cell death by enhancing the proteins associated with cell death programming.

Dr. Chen NG, the lead scientist in the final report, said, "AITC is a potent anti-human brain malignant glioma drug and it shows a remarkable action on cell cycle arrest before a commitment for apoptosis is reached".

Taken together, it is safe to suggest that the Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used as a chemopreventive and functional phytochemical for high-risk brain cancer individuals and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of brain cancer.

#Asparagus Show a Strong Effect on Cancers Through Cytotoxicity and Inducing Cancer Cell Death, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole food with the potential to kill cancer cells before it can cause some serious effect on the human body, some studies suggested.

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some tissue and organs, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

At the advanced stage, most invasive cancerous cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of blood and fluid.

The causes of cancer are unknown, researchers do not why people with the same health conditions and family history, are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

However, they do know that smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation, and a lack of exercise are most risk factors associated with the early onset of cancers.

Furthermore, genes mutation such as BRCA1 and 2 inherited from the parents are one of the major risk factors that cause cancers.

Long-term excessive alcohol drinking is associated with a higher risk of liver cancer.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, Eating 'fast foods' (such as chips and fried chicken) or other processed foods that are high in fat and sugar (like chocolate, crisps, and biscuits) can make you gain weight, and there is strong evidence that being overweight or obese is a cause of 12 types of cancer. And diets that are high in plant foods – such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and beans – can help you stay a healthy weight, and may also protect against certain cancers.

Moreover, Dr. Weiderpass E, in the study of "Lifestyle and cancer risk" wrote. "The main behavioral and environmental risk factors for cancer mortality in the world are related to diet and physical inactivity, use of addictive substances, sexual, and reproductive health, exposure to air pollution and use of contaminated needles".

Asparagus is a flowering plant belonging to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.

Asparagus has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

Its chemical constituents include essential oils, asparagine, arginine, tyrosine, flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin, and rutin), resin, and tannin.

In the study of saponins from old stems of asparagus (SSA) potential inhibitory activity on tumor growth and metastasis conducted by the East China Normal University on the breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer cell lines, researchers found that
* Injection of saponins displays a significant effect in the inhibition of all tested cancer cell lines in a concentration-dependent manner, with half-maximum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 809.42 to 1829.96 µg mL(-1).

* At the concentration of 400 µg mL(-1), SSA is more functional in blocking cell migration and invasion as compared with its cytotoxic effect.
* Furthermore, SSA markedly increased the activities of Cdc42, a protein with function involved in the regulation of the cell cycle. and Rac1 with function in stimulating the cytotoxicity activity and decreasing the activity of RhoA that is associated with cytoskeleton regulation, in cancer cells.

These results suggested that SSA increased the levels and activities of reactive oxygen species in exerting cytotoxicity against the proliferation and migration of cancer cells.

Dr.Wang J, the lead scientist in the final report, said, "SSA inhibits tumor cell motility through modulating the Rho GTPase signaling pathway (in the regulation of diverse cellular functions), suggesting a promising use of SSA as a supplement in healthcare foods and natural drugs for cancer prevention and treatment".

Moreover, in the examine the function of a series of Sarsapogenin and Diosgenin-derived steroidal constituents (1-12), isolated from Solanum xanthocarpum and Asparagus racemosus against cancers, researchers showed that the isolated compounds exert their ability to induce cell death and apoptosis of colon carcinoma cells.

The carbohydrate moieties linked to the steroid backbones process have a strong influence on the induction of cytotoxic activity and cell death mode (apoptosis or necrosis).

Taken together, asparagus containing high amounts of saponins newly Sarsapogenin and Diosgenin-derived steroidal constituents may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of cancers.
