#CinnamonPowder Exerts Hypoglycemic Control Effects Associated with Metabolic Alterations in the Early Stage of Cardiovascular Events, Scientists Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

A recent study suggested that cinnamon reduces the risk of heart disease through its antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties.
Heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day and approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease.

Anything that damages the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease.

There are many causes of heart disease, depending on the general types of defect. However, certain risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, abnormally high levels of triglyceride and cholesterol, and abnormally high levels of sugar in your blood due to diabetes or insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

An unhealthy diet is found to be an important risk factor for coronary heart disease. Foods that increased risks of obesity, and high blood pressure, also have a strong impact in elevating the risk of heart disease.

Certain medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes and a long-term diet high in saturated and trans fats and salts, refined sugar, processed food, and less in fruits and vegetables and fibers can substantially increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Mutated gene inherited from the parents, a sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, poor hygiene, and long-term stress is also considered significant risk factors for the disease.

These results suggested that heart disease can be prevented if people follow lifelong healthy eating and lifestyle.
Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the family Lauraceae.

The herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve reproductive organs, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

In the examine the anti-heart disease of Cinnamomum verum (family Lauraceae), a medicinal global plant that is used daily by people all over the world for reducing blood pressure, plasma glucose, obesity, and ameliorating dyslipidemia, a cluster of metabolic syndrome and risk factors of heart disease., researchers launched a search of the literature in the databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Persian Websites.

The keywords searched were cinnamon, Cinnamomum, cinnamaldehyde, atherogenic, hypertension, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, obesity, and dyslipidemia. All studies that satisfied the criteria and guidelines are included in the evaluation.

Most studies suggested that cinnamon is a cardiovascular protective agent and has a potential effect in reducing MetS complications due to its anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and beneficial effects on lipid profile.

Cinnamon also processed various types of antioxidants and activities in increasing the host antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, GPX, and CAT that leads to the elimination of ROS as well as decreasing lipoperoxidation (LPO) levels and decreases the risk of heart disease and mortality.

The National and international dietary recommendations are to eat between five and 10 servings of fruit and vegetables daily to ensure adequate intake of acute and chronic disease-fighting antioxidant nutrients, including heart disease.

Dr. Hamid Mollazadeh, the lead researchers said, "The antiatherosclerotic effects and prevent vascular diseases of cinnamon resulted from inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation through blockade of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) receptors mediated proliferation by cinnamon" and "Cinnamophilin, a lignin isolated from C. philippinense, inhibited in vitro human platelet aggregation, alongside [3H] inositol monophosphate formation, thromboxane B2 (TXB2) content".

However, in the concerns of antioxidant effects through the intake of an individual antioxidants such as supplementation, the Cleveland Clinic in the article wrote, "Vitamin E did not provide any benefit in lowering mortality compared to control treatments, and it did not significantly decrease the risk of cardiovascular death or stroke" and "Beta-carotene led to the small but statistically significant increase in all-cause mortality and a slight increase in cardiovascular death".

The joint study led by the North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, also suggested the use of cinnamon for the prevention and treatment of CVD, probably due to its activities in inhibition of metabolic syndrome (MetS), the leading cause of heart diseases.

In support of the above suggestion, some recent studies reaffirm the importance of cinnamon as a spice and maybe a natural remedy to treat cardiovascular diseases.

Furthermore, the intake of cinnamon powder also exerted a beneficial effect on glycaemic control in animals and human models, affecting the progression of metabolic alterations in the early stage of cardiovascular events.

Dr. Deng said, "The hypoglycemic effects of cinnamon and .... was demonstrated in most of the trials with some exceptions" and " Future studies with more defined participants, standardized preparation and dose, and improved trial design and size are warranted".

Taken together, cinnamon may be beneficiary for the prevention, management, and treatment of heart disease, but the quantity used of cinnamon should only be prescribed by a herbalist for the prevention of toxicity.

#ManukaHoney- Exerts Gastric Protective Effects by Normalizing Cell Cycle Distribution and Lowering Apoptosis in Gastric Mucosa

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found natural alternative antibiotics for the treatment of stomach ulcers caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.
Stomach/Gastric ulcer is a condition characterized by the breaking in the tissue lining of the stomach.

Most cases of stomach ulcer are caused by the infection with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium or long-term intake of anti-inflammatory medication.

The most common symptoms of a stomach ulcer include a dull pain in the stomach and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea or vomiting. bloating, burping or burning sensation in the chest.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms persistently, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of a stomach ulcer.

Unless the disease is caused by medication, most stomach ulcer can be treated successfully with the use of antibiotics and medications that reduce the overproduction of stomach acid.

Some researchers suggested that people who are obese are also susceptible to the onset of stomach ulcer due to the following reasons
* Epidemiological findings suggested that obesity is associated with inflammation in the gut, leading to the weakness of gut cells that are prone to ulcer formation.

* Obesity has been found to have an unhealthy ratio of gut bacterias.

* Overexpression gut harmful bacterias increased the risk of toxin accumulation in the lining of the gut.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of stomach ulcers investigated the Manuka honey antiulcer activity in gastric rats.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats selected for the study were divided into control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey group.

Injection of Manuka honey significantly decreased the ulcer index, completely protected the mucosa from lesions, and preserved gastric mucosal glycoprotein through the increased the expression gastric mucosal levels of nitric oxide (NO) in the inhibition of leukocyte adherence to the endothelium, and antioxidant enzymes glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Furthermore, Manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the oxidative stress marker and proinflammatory expression in the stomach caused by the injection of ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote, "Manuka honey likely exerted its antiulcer, effect by keeping enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and non-enzymatic (GSH and NO) antioxidants as well as inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) in a reduced form, inhibited lipid peroxidation (MDA), and preserved mucous glycoproteins levels".

The findings clearly suggested Manuka honey inhibited stomach ulcers by modulating oxidative stress, proinflammatory cytokines, and antioxidant expression.

In order to reveal more information about a honey antiulcer activity, researchers evaluated the use of Manuka honey in the treatment of acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers in rats.

The study included rats treated with three different concentrations of honey. Treatment with manuka honey was found to significantly reduce the ulcer index and maintain the glycoprotein content.

Manuka injection also reduced the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) as compared to the untreated control group.
Honey-treated groups showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and non-enzymatic (GSH) antioxidants besides levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, similar to that of the previous study.

More importantly, manuka honey-treated animals not only normalized cell cycle distribution but also significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The results indicated that manuka honey is effective for the treatment of chronic ulcers through many mechanisms.

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of stomach ulcer with no side effects.

#Greentea's EGCG Inhibits #BackPain Caused by Physical Damage to the Spine and Injured Nerve Cells, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.
Chronic back pain is a condition of back pain lasting more than 12 weeks.

It is also considered as musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) of the spine caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, and herniated discs. aging,..

Traditional medicine suggested acute back pain did not treat correctly during the time of onset may cause chronic back pain in the latter days.

According to NIH, "Chronic back pain can range in intensity from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp sensation that leaves the person incapacitated. Pain can begin abruptly as a result of an accident or by lifting something heavy, or it can develop over time due to age-related changes of the spine".

The exact causes of back pain are debatable. However, researchers suggested that chronic back pain may also be initiated by some psychological risk factors such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, decreased appetite, and mood changes.

Truly, patients with chronic back pain may experience symptoms of limited movements, reduced back flexibility, strength, and stamina. In a severe case, the pain can cause difficulty in carrying out important and enjoyable activities.

Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through stimulating anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.

According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich, ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributed to the inflammatory pain and hypersensitivity in the site of infection, observed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.

Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect in reduced expression of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in response to stress stimuli.

Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and other proteins in the regulation of varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.

Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers indicated that EGCG inhibits the inflammation in precipitated back pain through modulation of the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in responding to stress stimuli in mediated production of pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β.

Some researchers postulated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment of nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in induced tissue apoptosis.

In crushing the sciatic nerve-induced back pain in the tested animal, the application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gain in the percentage motor deficit.

More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect in the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improvement of muscle tissues from injured limbs with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.

According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizes the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. The abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

These results demonstrated the important effects of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, protected muscle fibers from cellular death, and improved morphological recovery in skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered a functional food for reduced back pain caused by physical damage to the spine and injured nerve cells. Intake of green tea supplements should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in the medical literature.

#Bean Fibers Exert a Strong Glycemic Control by Lowering the Levels of Blood Glucose, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Noton

Epidemiological studies suggested that bean fiber may be used as a therapeutically functional food in reduced risk of hyperglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high blood sugar in the bloodstream. According to the glucose test, anyone who has fasting levels over 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL) and 2-hour postprandial (after a meal) levels greater than 11.0 mmol/L (200 mg/dL) is hyperglycemic.

According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, dietary fiber intake daily and regularly not only lowers blood cholesterol levels but also normalizes blood glucose and insulin levels, thus reducing the risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately, recommended intakes, 20-35 g/day for healthy adults and age plus 5 g/day for children, are not being met, according to the statistic.
.
In the concern of high-fat Western diet in risk of hyperglycemia, Dr. Mbikay M, the lead author in the study of "Variable effects of gender and Western diet on lipid and glucose homeostasis in aged PCSK9-deficient C57BL/6 mice CSK9PC57BL/6" wrote,
* On Female tested subjects, the Western diet showed comparable plasma TC and HDL-C, but lower LDL-C, higher plasma glucose, and normal glucose disposal despite impaired GSIS compared to the normal diet.

* On Males, both normal and Western diets, showed lower plasma TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C, similarly elevated plasma glucose, glucose intolerance, and impaired GSIS.

These results suggested normal diet have a strong effect in reducing the risk of hyperglycemia in female compared to the Western diet and both diets are considered to have a significantly positive effect in increasing the risk of hyperglycemia.

In a randomized, single-blind, crossover design study (food intake: n=22; glycemia: n=10) with 5 liquid meals distributing similar amounts of macronutrients (C - control shake, OB - oat bran shake, F - flaxseed shake, WB - white bean extract shake, and UB - unripe banana flour shake) consumed in five non-consecutive days, researchers after examining the returned questionnaire from participants after 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes ingestion of each shake, suggested that
* Compared to the control, intake of white bean extract shake showed a significantly increased fiber component.

* Bean extract exhibited a strong glycemic control through the expression of incremental areas under the curves (iAUC).

Additionally, in the study of children completed a trial of 4 different breakfasts, participated children were given in random order, with 3 diets differed in fiber content and the fourth diet contained soya beans as part (38%) of the dietary fiber source,

Then, children in all groups were asked to exercise vigorously for an hour each morning and to rest for an hour. Blood samples drawn from children reveal the following results.
* There were no differences in blood glucose levels on the high-fiber diet compared to those on the medium-fiber diet.

* Children fed with a bean diet scored a significantly lowest mean blood glucose level, and

*The effect of glycemic control on the blood glucose of the bean diet was last into the hour before lunch.

Even with the better control of blood glucose, the bean diet was found to be an unacceptable diet among children, in comparison to the likes of high- and medium-fiber diets, which were as popular as the low-fiber diet.

Taken together, there is no doubt that bean fibers may have a positive effect in attenuating the risk of abnormally high blood glucose, a major risk factor in the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

#Intake of #Coffee Daily and Regularly MAY Increase the Risk of #LaryngealCancer, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Coffee and coffee caffeine may have the potential in reducing the risk and treatment of laryngeal cancer, some scientists suggested.
Laryngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the larynx. The cancer cells may spread to other tissues and organs in the late stage via lymph and blood circulation.

The exact cause of laryngeal cancer is unknown. Researchers do not know why people in the same family with the same health conditions and gender, are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

However, they do know that certain risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, unhealthy diet, family history, HPV infection, and long-term exposure to some chemicals including wood dust, soot coal dust, and paint fumes can increase the risk of cancer.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents, such as TP53, GSTM3, and NAT2, and long-term use of some medication, such as immune-suppressive drugs to fight off infection such as HIV or AID is considered the prevalent risk factor for the disease development.

According to the statistic provided by the study of A genetic view of laryngeal cancer heterogeneity
by Dr. María José de Miguel-Luken and colleagues, Out of over 500.000 new cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) diagnosed in 2008 worldwide, 151.000 cases (130.000 men and 21.000 women) were laryngeal cancer.

Sadly, the world mortality rate is 2.3/100.000 for all people who are diagnosed with laryngeal cancer,, causing over 82.000 deaths in 2008.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the concerns of the effect of coffee in the risk of laryngeal cancer, researchers at the Central South University Affiliated The Third Xiangya Hospital conducted a review by searching the medical literature database of Medline and EMBASE for the relevant articles published up to Oct. 2013.

A total of 2,803 cases and 503,234 controls in 10 independent studies satisfied the criteria and guidelines were identified.

After taking into account co and confounders in the selected studies, researchers found that the incidence of laryngeal cancer was associated with coffee consumption, compared to non-drinkers.

The relative risk of coffee drinkers was 1.47 compared to the baseline.

Additionally, according to the genetic assay used in the study, researchers also discovered that genetic influence plays an important role in increasing the risk of laryngeal cancer in the coffee-consumed population.

Dr. said, "The significant heterogeneity was detected when the association between tea and coffee consumption and the laryngeal carcinoma".

Moreover, researchers found no statistically significant association of cancer incident difference in comparison between moderate and low coffee drinking.

In other words, regardless of volume, intake of coffee is associated with the risk of the disease.

An additional 1 pack of coffee consumption conferred an RR of 1.22.

Dr. Chen J, the lead researcher said, " A dose-response relationship between coffee intake and laryngeal carcinoma was detected" and "this meta-analysis of observational studies demonstrates that coffee consumption would increase the laryngeal cancer risk".

However, among the 6 studies that reported the association between coffee consumption and laryngeal carcinoma, only one study was a prospective population-based cohort study, while the rest 5 studies were retrospective hospital-based case-control studies using observation of returned surveys from participants.

The findings firmly suggested that coffee consumption would increase the laryngeal cancer risk, therefore people who are at a higher risk of laryngeal cancer incidence may want to reduce or completely withdraw from coffee consumption.

Taken together, coffee and coffee caffeine intake may have a negative effect in increasing the risk of laryngeal cancer but researchers suggested that genetic and environmental factors such as alcohol intake, human papillomavirus infection, and silica exposure should be also taken into account. which were excluded from some studies.

#Herbal #BearberryLeaf's Extract at a Higher Dose Processes Hypotensive Activity without Changing the Heart Rate, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Barberry may be considered as a functional food and natural alternative in the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure quickly with no adverse effects, some scientists suggested. High blood pressure or hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

The normal range of blood pressure is 120 over 80. The number at the top is systolic blood pressure, and the bottom is called diastolic blood pressure.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of hypertension. However, researchers do know that certain preventable risk factors such as smoking, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity,.... and excessive alcohol drinking are associated to increase risk of hypertension.

Prolonged periods of raising the pressure of the heart can lead to damage to the body in many ways.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart disease by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, a blood clots in the arteries.

An unhealthy diet high in salt, sugar, process products, genetic mutation, aging, family history,... and long-term stress also has a substantial impact on the onset of hypertension.

Dr. Kim EJ, the lead author in the study of the dietary effect in patients with borderline hypertension, suggested, " a short-term (12 weeks) lifestyle intervention had positive effects on blood pressure control and weight reduction in the subjects, but not on their blood levels of adipokines. It is interesting that the blood level of baseline leptin was negatively associated with the changes in blood pressure after this short-term intervention"(3).

The results showed that long-term dietary intervention should have a strong impact on keeping blood pressure in check.

Adipocytes found in the obese population may contribute to the high prevalence of hypertension.

Leptin, a chemical compound in the blood plays a critical role in the regulation and arterial hypertension
Conventional blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they can induce serious side effects, including common gastrointestinal discomfort and psychological symptoms,

Lifelong intake of hypertension medicine can cause erectile dysfunction.

If you take the medicine in a long term, please make sure you discuss the side effects with your doctor.

Bearberries are 3 species in the genus Arctostaphylos, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herbs have been used in traditional medicine as diuretic agents and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones,.... and pelvic pain.

The Chemicals Ingredients
It contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides,..... and flavonoids.

With the aim to find the possible hypotensive activity of the aqueous extract of Vaccinium Arctostaphylos leaves, the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences conducted an experiment on rats with two-kidney, one-clip hypertension.

All rats were subjected to a sham operation of the placement of a Plexiglass clip on the left renal arteries.

After four weeks of surgery, renal artery-clipped rats were either injected intravenously with different doses of the extract at 10, 25, or 75 mg/kg or normal saline.

The mean blood pressure and heart rate were measured before and 20, 40, and 60 minutes after vehicle or drug administration, researchers found that

* Group given normal saline has a significantly higher mean blood pressure, heart, and right kidney weights, lower left kidney weight, and significantly indifferent heart rate.

* Treatment group with the injection of the extract at 75 mg/kg exerts a reduction of the mean blood pressure at 20, 40, and 60 minutes after administration without changing the heart rate.

* However, groups treated with doses of but 10 or 25 mg/kg show an insignificant change in mean blood pressure compared to groups administrated with the extract at 75 mg/kg.

These results suggested that bearberry leaf extract has the potential in reduced blood pressure in a dose-depended manner.

Dr. Khalili A, the lead author of the final report, wrote, "... at a higher dose the extract did have hypotensive activity without changing the heart rate".

Truly, the Laboratoire de Pharmacognosie study of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and hydroalcoholic extracts suggested that the test substances may process a pharmacological effect in reduced blood pressure through increasing urine flow and urinary sodium excretion in vitro.

Taken together, herbal bearberry and its extract may be considered a functional food for the treatment of high blood pressure.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the herbal leaf extract during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of bearberry hypotensive possibilities.

#Andrographolide Found in Andrographis Exerts Direct #Anticancer Activity Through Cells by Cell-cycle Arrest and Increased Cytotoxicity, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Andrographis may be considered the next generation of natural chemo medicine for the treatment of cancer at any stage, some scientists found.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cell growth and multiplied disorderly and uncontrollably. In the advanced stage, a cancerous cell from the originated site can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue via lymph or blood circulation.

Most cancers process a high survival rate if they are diagnosed early. According to the Mayo Clinic, over 56 percent of people diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer live for at least five years after diagnosis. However, the five-year survival rate for people diagnosed with late-stage of invasive lung cancer is 5 %.

According to the statistic on Canadian cancer provided by the government, in 2017, there were over 200,000 newly diagnosed cancer and 80,000 Canadians died from cancer. 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 4 will die from the disease, during their lifetime.

The exact cause of cancers is unknown. Researchers do not know why some people without gene mutation are susceptible to early onset of cancer while others do not

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as aging, tobacco, sun exposure, radiation exposure, chemicals, and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, and physical inactivity are associated to gene change in the initiation of cancer development.

Most cancers share the common symptoms of tiredness, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue. In the advanced stage, cancer patients may also experience additional common symptoms of dehydration, nausea and vomiting, constipation, and persistent pain.

Andrographis parniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belongings to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic to treat the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis,.... and chicken pox.

With an aim to evaluate the effectiveness of Andro administered alone and in combination with Cis against cancers, researchers at the University of Sydney, conducted an experiment, using ovarian A2780 and A2780(cisR) cancer cell lines.

Five different sequences of administration (Cis/Andro h): 0/0h, 4/0 h, 0/4 h, 24/0 h, and 0/24 h. are examined for their antiproliferative and apoptotic effects in tested cancer cell lines.

At the end of the experiment, researchers reported that
* Anti-cancer activity in combined doses was lower in the resistant A2780(cisR) cell line than in the parent A2780 cell line compared to the treatment of Cis alone.

* Andro alone was found to be three times more active in the A2780(cisR) cell line as compared to that in the A2780 cell line.

* Cis and Andro administered using the sequences 0/4 h and 4/0 h produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

* The percentage of apoptotic cell death was found to be greater for the 0/4 h combination of Andro and Cis as compared to those values from single-drug treatments.

These results suggested although herbal Andrographis processes a strong anti-cancer activity, its efficacy is lesser than those of a combined dose of the herb + Cis.

In pulmonary cancer, using a lung tumor mouse model induced by human vascular endothelial growth factor

A 165 (hVEGF-A165), researchers found that

* Andrographolide significantly reduces the expression of hVEGF-A165 compared with a mock group in the Clara cells of the lungs.

* Andrographolide also decreased tumor formation by reducing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) information of new blood vessels for cancer cells to grow, Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) in the stimulation of cancer cells grow and divide, Cyclin A, a protein in regulated cell division and Cyclin B, a protein which plays an integral role in cancer hyperplasia expression on the transcriptional and translational levels.

Dr. Tung YT, the lead author said, " Andrographolide treatment on the overexpression of VEGF can arrest the cell cycle, which induced pulmonary tumors in transgenic mice. In conclusion, the antiangiogenesis and chemotherapeutic potential of andrographolide may provide a cure for pulmonary tumors in the future".

Furthermore, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories in the classification of the Andrographis anti-Cancers effect showed that
* Andrographolide treatment inhibited the proliferation of different tumor cell lines, representing various types of cancers, in vitro

* Andrographolide exerts direct anticancer activity on cancer cells by cell-cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase through induction of cell-cycle inhibitory protein p27 in initiated cancer cell cycle division and decreased expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) in promoted cancer cell-cycle during G1/S transition.

* Andrographolide also enhanced the tumor necrosis factor-alpha production and CD marker expression, resulting in the increased cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes against cancer cells.

Dr. after taking into account co and confounders said, "These results suggest that andrographolide is an interesting pharmacophore with anticancer and immunomodulatory activities and hence has the potential for being developed as a cancer therapeutic agent".

The findings strongly suggested that Andrographis containing the major bioactive compound Andrographolide may be used alone or combined with other medications for the treatment of cancers.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Andrographis anti-cancer possibilities.
