By applying the polyphenol-rich extract derived from strawberry or anthocyanin or tannin-rich sub-fractions to the cell lines in doses varying from 50 to 1.5 microg/ml, researchers discovered the strawberry extract inhibited over 50% in cell survival of both the normal and the tumor lines with the doses of approximately 5 microg/ml.

The extracts were found to exert cytotoxicity to peripheral blood human lymphocytes with the doses higher levels of 20 microg/ml for a similar effect of 50% reduction in cell survival.

Compound analysis assay suggested that the cytotoxicity retained in the tannin-rich fraction was considerably more toxic to all cells (normal or tumor cell lines or lymphocytes) than the anthocyanin-rich fraction tannin-rich fraction.

Furthermore, In LNCaP and PC-3) tumor cell lines, strawberry extract with concentrations of 50 microg/ml was required for a 50% reduction in cell survival.

The finding suggested that strawberries processed with high amounts of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer without inducing any side effects

Scientists may have found a whole food for the treatment and improvement of the quality of life of post-stroke patients without inducing any side effects, according to studies.

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of brain cells due to lack of oxygen or bleeding.

In other words, a stroke can either be the result of a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

A mini-stroke is a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain that only causes some disruption to the brain inducing permanent damage.

Depending on the parts of the neuron being damaged, patients may experience different symptoms. However, the most common symptoms of stroke include paralysis or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, problems in vision, speaking, walking, and persistent headache.

Certain medical conditions such as diabetes. heart diseases, long-term use of tobacco, the increase in age, and ethnicity are some prevalent risk factors for stroke.

Scientists may have found a natural food source that processes the potential for the treatment of bladder cancer with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the bladder.
Most cases of primary bladder cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder tissue.

Aloe vera may have a potential effect in reducing oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer, some scientists suggested.
Head and neck cancer is a class of cancers that start in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

In the early stage, cells on the surface of the inner lining associated with the head and neck start to grow irregularly and disorderly.

However, at the advanced stage, as cancer has penetrated into the deeper layers, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.

In some cases at the advanced stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

The most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

Oral mucositis is one of the common side effects in cancer patients who are under chemo and radiation treatment, leading to symptoms of pain, nutritional problems as a result of an inability to eat, and an increased risk of infection due to open sores in the mucosa.

The symptom has been found to reduce the quality of life of cancer patients.

According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, patients experience the side effect of oral mucositis after 5 to 10 days of chemotherapy. Normally, the side effect will disappear in short few weeks, depending on the types of medicine, doses, and duration of the treatment.

Dr. Begonya Chaveli-López, the lead author in the study "Treatment of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy" wrote, "Very few interventions of confirmed efficacy are available for the management of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy. However, according to the reviewed literature, the use of palifermin, cryotherapy, and low-power laser offer benefits, reducing the incidence and severity of oral mucositis".

On finding a natural and effective ingredient for the treatment of oral mucositis with no side effects, researchers examined the topical Aloe vera, a widely used for mild sunburn, frostbites, and scalding burns for its effect on mucositis.

These efficacies indicated that Aloe vera mouthwash may be considered an alternative potential for treating radiation-induced oral mucositis and candidiasis in patients with head and neck cancers.

Futhermore, in the finding the most effective agent for treatment of oral mucositis, the Haji Mirza Mohammad conducted a triple-blind, randomized controlled trial in the comparison of the Aloe vera mouthwash with a benzydamine mouthwash in the alleviation of radiation-induced mucositis in the head and neck cancer patients.


The trial included 26 eligible head and neck cancer patients who were to receive conventional radiation therapy at the radiation oncology department and were randomized to receive an Aloe vera mouthwash or a benzydamine mouthwash.

No difference in the distribution of mucositis severity between the two groups, at the baseline.

The mean interval between radiation therapy and the onset of mucositis was similar for both groups.

The mean interval between the start of radiation therapy and the maximum severity of mucositis were was also similar in both the Aloe vera and benzydamine groups (Aloe vera 23.38±10.75 days, benzydamine 23.54±15.45 days).

According to the comparison test researchers suggested that the Aloe vera mouthwash could be an alternative agent in the treatment of radiation-induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer due to its exertion of the similar effects as of those of beneficial as benzydamine mouthwash in alleviating the severity of radiation-induced mucositis with no side effects.

Taken together, herbal Aloe vera juice may be considered a functional juice for the treatment of the side effect of oral mucositis caused by chemo and radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer

* 6-GRF reduced the inflammatory expression by improving the activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) as well as glutathione (GSH) level in the brain, ovary, and uterus of rats exposed to CPF.

#Bilberry #Anthocyanin Extract Induces #HealthyAgings By improving the Decreased Activity of Digestive Enzymes in Breaking Down the Proteins into Amino Acids

Scientists may have found a natural and herbal remedy for the improvement of digestive gut microbiota for health optimization, according to studies.

Gut microbiota, or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including producing vitamins, synthesizing all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carrying out biotransformation of bile.

Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic, enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.

From the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.


However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of diseases such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy-weight individuals.


Dr. Kyle J. Wolf, the lead scientist in the investigation of the link between obesity and gut microbiota, wrote, "
In recent years it has been definitively shown that microbiota in the gastrointestinal tract is altered in obese individuals".

And, "Normal humans and mice have 60% to 80% Firmicutes (which are primarily nonculturable, butyrate-producing Clostridium cluster XIVa) and 20% Bacteroidetes (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides). However, the obese mouse model (ob/ob) had a 50% reduction in Bacteroidetes and an increase in Firmicutes. A similar decrease in Bacteroidetes and increase in Firmicutes is also seen when C57BL/6 mice are fed a high-fat (HF) diet".

The results in the mice model study strongly linked the Western diet and the risk of imbalanced gut microbiota in facilitating the onset of obesity.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the improvement of digestive system functioning in the elderly examined bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption and healthy aging and the effects on intestinal barrier function and digestive enzyme activity.

In the aging rats selected for the study, injection of medium-dose bilberry anthocyanin at 20 mg per kg bw per day) showed to optimize intestinal function.

Analyzing the gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin balanced the levels of bacteria in the intestine by increasing the good bacteria such as Aspergillus oryzae, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, Clostridiaceae-1, the Bacteroidales-S24-7- and the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group) and decreasing the levels of harmful bacterias, such as Verrucomicrobia and Euryarchaeota.

However. injection of any dose higher than 20 mg per kg displayed the alternation of some intestinally beneficial bacteria in an adverse way.

Furthermore, besides improving the levels of gut microbiota, consumption of bilberry anthocyanin also induced changes in short-chain fatty acids and the intestinal mucosal barrier, correlatedly.

In other words, the injection of the extract consumption also improved the decreased activity of digestive enzymes in breaking down the proteins into amino acids due to aging.

Dr. Li J, the lead scientist wrote, "Bilberry anthocyanin extract consumption is a potential approach for assisting healthy aging".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about bilberry gut microbiota effects, researchers compared bilberries and cloudberries, the 2 berries on the. intestinal immune responses and gut microbiota.

Injection of bilberry not only reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines through immunomodulatory activity but also improved the balance of the gut microbiota compared to cloudberries and the control group.

Interestingly, cloudberry inhibited and bilberry exhibited the expression of energy metabolism-related genes in the intestinal mucosa.

Additionally, the microbial profiles of cloudberry-fed mice clustered together and associated with small adenoma size compared to the bilberry group.

The findings suggested that bilberry consumption demonstrated potential digestive health by attenuating intestinal inflammation, improving microbial profiles, and exhibiting mucosal energy metabolism.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed with a high amount of bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for optimizing bodily health by balancing the levels of gut microbiota.

#Ginger Extract Inhibits the Oxidative DNA Damage and #Oxidativestress Through Its Antixodant Activities, Researchers Show

Intake of one or 2 slices of ginger daily and regularly may have a strong effect in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body against the onset of oxidative stress, scientists found.
Oxidative stress is a result of the overexpression of free radicals, compared to the levels of antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable atoms with the unpaired electron on the outer ring of the molecules, therefore, in order to become stable, they must donate or steal an electron from other stable molecules, leading to chain activity that can not be stopped until they are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

There are many factors associated with the production of free radicals, including the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe, and the water we drink.

In other words, free radicals can be generated by alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

Some researchers suggested the prolonged presence of oxidative stress can cause damage to the cells, proteins, and alteration of DNA, leading to chronic diseases.

Dr. Eiichiro Ichiishi and colleagues in the concern of the effects of oxidative stress on the risks of diseases showed that oxidative stress not only has a strong implication in the development of diseases but also affects the outcome throughout the course of organ transplantation.
Additionally, the team wrote, "Kidney ischemia/reperfusion injury emerges in various clinical settings as a great problem complicating the course and outcome".

"Xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) is a genetic disorder in DNA nucleotide excision repair (NER) with severe neurological disorders, in which oxidative stress and disturbed melatonin metabolism may be involved".

These results indicated the important roles of antioxidants which inhibited oxidative stress before they can cause a wide range of damage to the human body.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find the best possible antioxidative stress natural ingredient or whole food, researchers examined the protective effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) extract on IL-1β-mediated oxidative stress and mitochondrial apoptosis in C28I2 human chondrocytes.
The cells were pretreated with 5 and 25 μg/mL ginger extract for 24 h, followed by incubation with IL-1β (10 ng/mL) for 24 h.

At the end of the study, ginger extract demonstrated a significant effect in the inhibition of IL-1β-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid peroxidation.


Ginger extract pretreatment also remarkably increased the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes.

The elevated levels of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and caspase-3 involved cell apoptosis were also normalized by the application of ginger extract.

The finding clearly indicated ginger extract could considerably reduce IL-1β-induced oxidative stress and consequent mitochondrial apoptosis as the major mechanisms of chondrocyte cell death and the efficacy was attributed to its antioxidant activity.

In pulmonary abnormalities tested mice induced by chronic ethanol exposure, researchers evaluated whether ginger extract mitigated pulmonary abnormalities induced by ethanol in rats.

The study included male Wistar rats divided into the control group, the ethanol group, and the ethanol plus ginger extract group.

The ethanol group after six-week of treatments increased the proliferation of lung cells, and induced fibrosis, inflammation, and leukocyte infiltration.

The levels of -hydroxydeoxyguanosine, NADPH oxidase, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein were also found to increase substantially in the ethanol-treated group.

The application of ginger extract normalized such changes by inhibiting oxidative DNA damage and oxidative stress.

Taken altogether, ginger extract may be considered a natural antioxidative stress ingredient by enhancing the production of antioxidants and protecting the body against inflammation.
