#Honey in the Promotion of the Expression of Antioxidant Enzymes by Increasing the Brain SOD, GST, and GSH Activities

Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a medical condition associated with the overexpression of free radicals compared to low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals are constantly produced in animal and human cells. The air we breathe, the thing we eat, and the environment we contact are some factors that cause the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Epidemiological studies suggested that oxidative stress can induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and particularly, cancer.

How overexpression of free radical cause damage to the cells. Researchers explained due to the free radical unstable nature with the unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

These processes can lead to the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host body resulting in oxidative stress, a major cause of cell, lipid, and protein damage.

In spite of free radical's harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.

On the other hand, antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit oxidation. Antioxidants can reduce levels of free radicals and overexpression can limit the free radical function in carrying out their health benefits.

Therefore, in order to maintain good healthy, the levels of free radicals and antioxidants must be balanced.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oxidative stress examined the honey activity on oxidative stress induced by lead acetate exposure in male Wistar rats.

The study included 24 male Wistar rats randomly divided into four groups: The control group received 1 ml/kg distilled orally for 28 days; while groups II-IV received 0.2% lead in drinking water and 1 ml/kg of distilled water, 1 ml/kg of honey, 1.5 ml/kg of honey respectively for 28 days.

Before pretreatment with honey, infected rats showed a decrease in locomotor and exploratory and decrease antioxidant activity increase in anxiety, memory impairment, and lipid peroxidation.

Co-administration of honey with lead inhibited neurotoxicity observed by the improvement in memory function and decreased latency period and increased time spent in the target quadrant compared to the lead-exposed animals.

Injection of honey in the lead-fed group also increased locomotion, exploration, and decreased anxiety observed by the frequency of rearing, freezing duration, and the number of lines crossed by animals.

More importantly, the administration of honey improved the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host observed by increased brain SOD, GST, and GSH activities compared to the lead-treated groups.

However, the honey pretreatment group showed no significant effect on MDA level, the oxidative stress marker.

These results suggested that honey exerted neuroprotective effects against lead-induced cognitive deficit probably by enhancing antioxidant activities without affecting the levels of MDA.

In order to reveal more information about honey antioxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of Tualang honey (TH) protective activity against oxidative stress of exercise.

The study included 20 female athletes (aged 21.3 [2.1] years; body weight [BW] 54.1 [5.7] kg) who were randomly assigned into two groups and consumed either 1.5 g/kg BW TH (high honey; HH; n = 10) or 0.75 g/kg BW TH (low honey; LH; n = 10).

Injection of Tualang honey showed a reduction of MDA in the LH group compared to the HH group. In other words, less oxidative stress was found in the LH group.

The concentrations of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP]) increased from baseline to 2 and 1 h after TH consumption, respectively, then the concentrations returned toward baseline at 3 h in both LH and HH groups.

MDA concentration significantly decreased (p < 0.05) from baseline to 2 h and significantly increased from 2 to 3 h in the HH group. Meanwhile, ROS levels increased significantly from 0.5 to 3 h in the HH group.

Compared to the HH group, the LH group showed similar trends but insignificant increased levels of MDA and ROS.

Taken altogether, honey particularly Tualang honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases related to the expression of oxidative stress with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study

#Tomato's Lycopene Promotes the Healthy Ratio of Gut Microbiota by Inhibiting the Levels of ProInflammatoryCytokines, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including the impacts of
* In nutrient metabolism, gut microbiota improves the absorption of dietary nutrients in the digestive system

* In xenobiotic and drug metabolism, gut microbiota protects the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity by facilitating excretion.

* Maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestine in nutrient adsorption.

* In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interact with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, an imbalance in the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

And, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to discover healthy foods for enhancing the ratio of dut microbiota composition researchers examined the effect of consuming tomato products and lycopene on chronic inflammatory disorders associated with intestinal bacteria in an animal model.

The study included Winnie mice as a model of spontaneous ulcerative colitis treated with or without chow enriched with 1% Bronze tomato.

At week 2, the Bronze-enriched chow-treated group showed no macroscopic effect on the IBD symptoms.

However, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines found in the treated mice were significantly reduced, observed by the levels of IL17A and IFNγ.

According to the analysis of the microbial composition, two weeks of the Bronze enriched diet demonstrated a strong effect in the improvement of the gut microbiota ratio in the tested mice.

In additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the efficacy of the Bronze tomato in the promotion of gut health was attributed to the phytochemical polyphenols presented in the tomato.

Taken altogether, tomato processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered a dietary supplement for gut health, pending to large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of polyphenols in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga Exercises Improve Physical and Psychological Functioning and Quality of Life in Post-Stroke Patients, Clinical Trials Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Post-stoke patients may benefit from reduced pain, improved range of motion (ROM), strength, and endurance with therapeutic yoga, a recently renowned institute suggested.

Stroke rehabilitation is a program with the aim to regain some physical and psychological function after a stroke, causing the death of some cells in the brain.

Today, yoga, the ancient practice has become a very popular form of exercise in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the Colorado State University, the significant improvement in physical functioning such as hip passive, upper extremity strength range of motion in post-stroke patients participated in the 6-min walk after 8 weeks of engaging in yoga.

Dr. the lead author said, " therapeutic-yoga intervention may improve multiple aspects of physical functioning after stroke. Such an intervention may be complementary to traditional rehabilitation"

Besides improved physical functioning, yoga is also shown a significant effect in promoting psychological health and quality of life.

In the review literature of major biomedical and complementary medicine databases, researchers at the Harvard Medical School found that 5 randomized controlled clinical trials and 4 single case studies identified the positive results of improvements in cognition, mood, and balance and reductions in stress in post-stroke patients.

Furthermore, in support of the above differentiation, a prospective, randomized, pilot study of yoga-based rehabilitation for people with chronic stroke with yoga therapy showed a remarkable result in regaining some forms of balance, balance self-efficacy, reduced fear of falling (FoF), and improved quality of life.

Taking together, there is no doubt that therapeutic-yoga intervention may improve multiple aspects of physical and psychological functioning as well as regained quality of life in after-stroke patients and may be used as complementary to conventional rehabilitation.

#Tualanghoney in The Regulation of Weight-Related Effects of Stress-DepressionDisorder, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, that affects the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think, and act.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry inducing depressive syndrome.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, and loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.

Readers may find other symptoms not included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression of Association of Americans, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread depression in the Western world may be associated with life stress at work and at home.

Dr. T. Plieger, the lead scientist in examining the effects of psychological stress on depression wrote, "A significantly closer relation between depression and life stress than between burnout and life stress was found in the healthy (z = 3.01, p = .003) as well as in the depressed sample".

And "This finding was supported in both samples by means of a path analytic approach where the associations between life stress, burnout, and depression were controlled for the possible mediator and moderator effects, also considering the influence of age".

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.

Scientists searching for an alternative remedy for the treatment of depression with no side effects examined the effects of honey in several studies by searching the database of online medical literature.

8 studies satisfied the standard criteria and guidelines were chosen, including 2 RCTs of human subjects and 6 animal studies.

The randomized studies suggested that depressed elderly treated with a mix of honey barely exhibited a significant decrease in depression, stress, and mood disturbances scores compared to the control group.

In menopausal women, treatment with honey or a mix of honey and pollens exerted a significant activity in the improvement of the three subscales of the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) by 68.3% and 70.9%, respectively.

The results also suggested that posttreatment demonstrates a better effect compared to pretreatment when the mixture of honey was applied.

Furthermore, the application showed similar effects on the serum levels of cholesterol, such as total, HDL, or LDL cholesterol), triglycerides, or oestradiol in both groups.

According to the survey returned participants reported that they observed improvements 3-4 days after the initiation of treatment. On a 10-point taste scale, (1 = very good and 10 = very bad) honey received an average score of 2.3, whereas a honey and pollen mix received an average score of 6.0.

Interestingly, the side effects of exhaustion and edema of the lower extremities were reported by some participants, and 2 participants were withdrawn from the study due to the taste of the mix of honey with bare powder.

In animal studies, all experiments displayed a positive effect of honey on depression. Some studies also found that honey improves depressive-like behaviors, cognitive function, and symptoms of anhedonia.

Futhermore, honey injection also showed a reduction of anxiety symptoms and an improvement of spatial memory.

Moreover, honey alone or a combination of honey and other bee products inhibited MAO enzyme activity in the liver of treated mice.

Where monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme that metabolizes monoamines was elevated in depressed patients.

And, the anti-depressive effects were correlated to the volume of honey intake. In other words, greater improvements were associated with the increased administration of high doses of honey.

In order to reveal more information about honey depression activity, researchers examined
Tualang and Acacia honey in patients with stress-depression disorder.

Both Tualang and Acacia honey showed significant anti-depression activity through increasing the production of levels of antioxidants.

However, Tualang honey consumption was found to be more suitable in regulating weight-related effects of stress-depression disorder compared to that of Acacia honey which exerted more profound effects in alleviating depression effects and managing glucocorticoid imbalance effects of stress-depression disorder.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Tualang, and Acacia honey, used alone or combined with other bee products may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Ginger Shows a Strong Effect Against Micro Bacterial Infectious Disease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent spice that processes the potential to inhibit microbial infection, according to studies.
Microbial infection is an infection caused by the multiplication of microbes after entering the body successfully.

The process of infection can be divided into many stages. However, most microbes that try to invade the body were killed in the acute phase of infection by the immune systematic response through the production of the protein associated with the pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most people do not experience any symptoms until the microbe multiplication to the peak in its population.

Acute infection in most cases is recovered within a week or two. However, if the immune function cannot destroy all the microbes within a certain period of time, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammatory diseases.

The chronic low-grade inflammatory state is a pathological feature of a wide range of chronic conditions, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and type 2 diabetes.

The most common risk of microbial infection is a weakened immune system, particularly in the elderly.

The Institute of Medicine (US) Division of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in examing the risk of infection in the elderly, wrote, "The implications of an aging population for health care are being widely discussed but seldom with the understanding that health promotion and disability prevention are workable concepts for people in the “second 50” years of life".

And, "Pneumonia and influenza are among the leading causes of death and morbidity from infection among older people. Safe and effective vaccines to prevent pneumonia and influenza are available and should be universally used in persons over age 50. Nosocomial (institutionally acquired) infections have a major deleterious impact on persons over 50 and require good infection control practices in hospitals and nursing homes".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural alternative for the treatment of bacterial infection examined the ginger's antimicrobial and antifungal properties associated with periodontitis in the human oral cavity

Application of ethanol and n-hexane extracts of ginger exhibited antibacterial activities that cause periodontal diseases. against three anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 53978, Porphyromonas endodontics ATCC 35406, and Prevotella intermedia ATCC 25611.

Two highly alkylated gingerols, such as [10]-gingerol and [12]-gingerol effectively inhibited the growth of these oral pathogens at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) range of 6-30 microg/mL.

Furthermore, these 2 compounds also killed the oral pathogens at a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) range of 4-20 microg/mL compared to other failed compounds such as 5-acetoxy-[6]-gingerol, 3,5-diacetoxy-[6]-gingerdiol and galanolactone.

In order to reveal more information about the ginger's antimicrobial activity, researchers examine the newly isolated compound including 6-paradol (1) and 6-shogaol (2) as the major antimycobacterial agents.

Injection of these isolates was found to be active against Mycobacterium chelonei, M. intracellulare, M. smegmatis, and M. xenopi (MIC 10-15 µg/ml).

The desmethyl derivative of compound (1) retained antimycobacterial activity. However, derivatives are more active against Candida albicans, compared to (1) and (2).

Interestingly, newly compound Gingerone (9)was found to be inactive against microbial activity.

Taken together, ginger processed with abundantly bioactive ingredients may be considered a natural alternative for the prevention and treatment of microbial infection, and diseases associated with micro bacterial infectious disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human infection.

#Anthocyanin Found in Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits #Skindiseases Involving Pruritic Symptoms, such as #ChronicAllergicContactDermatitis, AtopicDermatitis, and Rhinitis, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Pruritus is severe itching of the skin, as a symptom of various ailments. It is a frequent complaint heard by dermatologists and primary care physicians.

According to the statistics provided by Dr. Elke Weisshaar and Dr. Uwe Matterne, in children, pruritus is a cardinal symptom of atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis)associated with the prevalent risk between 6.1% and 22.3% in Western countries.

There are many causes associated with itching skin including aging that worsened dry skin conditions, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, scabies, burns, scars, insect bites, and hives. and diseases associated with the liver and kidney

Most symptoms of pruritus are due to scratching, including skin redness, bumps, cracks, and scaly skin, depending on the causes of the symptoms.

In some instances, an allergic reaction can induce pruritus involved in touching clothing, pets, chemicals, soaps, cosmetics, and foods caused by an overreaction of the immune system in the production of cytokines against allergens.

Some researchers suggested that some people may experience an itching feeling with no physical cause. And patients with depression anxiety obsessive-compulsive disorder have been found to have an urge to scratch.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of pruritus, researchers at Chiba Univ examined the bilberry anthocyanins antipruritic effect in a mouse model of allergic contact dermatitis by comparing anthocyanin-rich quality-controlled bilberry extract and anthocyanidin-rich degraded extract.

The study included BALB/c mice with allergic contact dermatitis induced by 4 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) and was administered Bilberon-25 orally for 4 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.

Treatment with non-heated Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, whereas treatment with 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 did not.

300 μg/mL nonheated Bilberon-25 showed significant inhibition of degranulation in RBL-2H3 mast cells, whereas 2 h-heated Bilberon-25 had no effect at any concentration.

Further differentiation of the results, researchers found that the efficacy of nonheated Bilberon-25 was attributed to the inhibitory effect of bilberry anthocyanins on pruritus mediated, at least in part, on mast cell degranulation.

More precisely, Dr. Yamaura K, the lead scientist said, "The anthocyanin-rich but not anthocyanidin-rich bilberry extract may be a useful dietary supplement for skin diseases involving pruritic symptoms, such as chronic allergic contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and rhinitis".

Furthermore, in a mouse model-induced chronic allergic contact dermatitic researchers once examined the bilberry extract (Bilberon-25) in the alleviation of pruritus.

The study included BALB/c mice with chronic allergic contact dermatitis induced by 3 weeks of repeated application of 2,4,6-trinitro-1-chlorobenzene (TNCB) were administered Bilberon-25 orally for 3 weeks after sensitization with TNCB.

During the study, treatment with Bilberon-25 significantly attenuated the TNCB-induced increased scratching behavior, but dexamethasone did not.

Both dexamethasone and Bilberon-25 showed a significant amelioration of ear swelling.

Based on these results, researchers wrote in the final report, "Anthocyanins from bilberry might be beneficial for the treatment of chronic pruritus which can occur in patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis".

Taken altogether, bilberry processed with a high amount of anthocyanins may be considered a functional food for the treatment of chronic pruritus with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Yoga Intervention Reduces Symptom of #PelvicPain and Improves Quality of Life in Women with of Endometriosis, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga therapy is associated with reduced chronic pelvic pain, menstrual patterns, and improved quality of life (QoL), a renowned study suggested.

Endometriosis is a condition of endometrial tissue formed outside the uterus and reacted to hormone signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, by building and breaking up tissues and eliminating them through the menstrual period.

Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

In a randomized controlled trial conducted at the University of Campinas Medical School, Campinas, SP, Brazil 40 women were randomly divided into two groups: an intervention group of women who practiced yoga (n = 28) with 90-min scheduled yoga sessions twice a week for 8 weeks. and a control group of women who did not practice yoga (n = 12), Yoga participants showed a significant reduction of pelvic pain and improved quality of life.

Furthermore, the Yoga group in the Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP)-30 questionnaire also expressed the domains of pain, well-being, and image are improved over time in the compared Nonyoga group.

More importantly, in the understanding of women's perception of pain management involved with pain-associated endometriosis attributed to yoga practice, 15 Fifteen women with pain-associated endometriosis practiced yoga for 8 weeks, showed significantly improved in control pelvic pain attributed to the integration of body and psyche yoga practice.
