#Gingeroil Inhibits the Symptoms of Pain in #Osteoarthritis In Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by the wear and tear on joints.

The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.

Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of osteoarthritis

Conventionally, the management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improves physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments if it is necessary.

If you are currently taking some of the medications for the treatment of osteoarthritis, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of osteoarthritis, some researchers suggested that the increase in age is one of the disease prevalent factors found in the aging population.

Dr. Richard F. Loeser, said, "Basic aging studies in non-articular cells suggest that cell stress or cell damage response contributes to chronic inflammation that promotes age-related diseases. This cellular response results in the senescence-associated secretory phenotype which has many of the characteristics of an OA chondrocyte in terms of the cytokines, chemokines, and proteases produced".

And, "Because OA occurs in older adults who also have age-related changes in muscle, bone, fat, and the nervous system, it is likely that a more general and systemic approach will be needed to better understand the link between aging and OA".

The result strongly indicated the increased risk of osteoarthritis in the elderly.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study included 68 participants with osteoarthritis who were randomly assigned evenly to receive standard treatment with or without self-knee massage with ginger oil twice a week.

At the end of the first and fifth weeks, participants in both groups were assessed regarding pain and functional state.

According to the assessed results, the mean Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Pain scores of the intervention group were significantly lower at the end of the first and fifth weeks compared to the control.

Furthermore, the mean total scores and mean Function subscale scores of the functionality in activities of daily living with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were significantly lower in the intervention group in the first- and fifth-week assessments, also compared to control.

The results strongly suggested that self-massage of the knee with ginger oil should be used combined with standard medical treatment for osteoarthritis patients.

Based on the findings, Dr.Tosun B, the lead scientist said, "Nurses can easily train patients and their caregivers on knee massage, and the intervention can be implemented by patients at home without any restrictions on location".

In order to reveal more information about the ginger effect on osteoarthritis, researchers launched a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years.

According to the Hedges' standardized mean difference (SMD), and safety by risk ratio (RR), out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, leaving five trials (593 patients) for meta-analyses.

Ginger intake showed a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.

Quality of life from the selected trials also statistically and significantly improved in favor of the ginger group.

Interestingly, patients given ginger were more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

The results exerted a similar efficacy as seen in the aforementioned study.

Taken together, ginger may be used alone or combined with primary therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Yoga Shows A Significant Effect on Reducing Complications and Improving the Outcome in High-Risk Pregnancy, Researchers show

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an integrated form of exercise in reduced complications of women in a group of high-risk pregnancies, studies suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

In a review of the literature published on 4 databases from January 2004 to February 2014 to examine the effect of yoga in high-risk pregnancies with 10 randomized controlled trials satisfied the criteria and guidelines selected, researchers found that all studies expressed a positive effect in reduced high-risk pregnancy complications, including lower incidences of prenatal disorders (p ≤ 0.05), and small gestational age and improved psychological and physical expression,.....

The study continuously mentioned that yoga may be safe and particularly effective for pregnant women who are depressed, at high risk, or experience lumbopelvic pain.

After taking account of other co-founders, researchers also opinionated that yoga is a more effective exercise than walking or standard prenatal therapy.

Interestingly, in a single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial with sixty-eight pregnant women (38 in the control group with standard antenatal care and 30 in the YT group) with 27.2 (5.2) years of mean age recruited from the outpatient services of medical college and hospital in Bangalore, South India with all participants perceived stress scale (PSS) measured during the 12th, 20th, and 28th weeks of pregnancy, researchers indicated that
1. Yoga group demonstrated a significant difference in the PSS level in reduced scores at the second follow-up (28th week of pregnancy) compared to the control group.
2 The yoga group also expressed fewer pregnancy discomforts in the PSS scale
3. The standard antenatal care control group showed an increased stress level.

After further exams and observations, researchers insisted that YT, a cost-effective option, and also a feasible and safe option, can reduce the stress level in inducing high-risk pregnancy complications.

In support of the above differentiation, the SVYASA University researchers conducted their own study of 68 high-risk pregnant women recruited from two maternity hospitals in Bengaluru, India, and randomized assigned into yoga and control groups with yoga group (n=30) received standard care plus one-hour yoga sessions, three times a week, from the 12th to the 28th week of gestation. and the control group (n=38) received standard care plus conventional antenatal exercises (walking) during the same period and suggested that

1. Women who attended yoga lessons expressed a reduction in pregnancy complications, including pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), preeclampsia, gestational diabetes (GDM), and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) cases.

2. Furthermore, compared to the control, the yoga group also demonstrated fewer small gestational Age (SGA) babies and newborns with low APGAR(The Apgar score to assess baby health) scores.

In the conclusion, Dr. Rakhshani A, the lead author said, "Yoga in high-risk pregnancy has shown that yoga can potentially be an effective therapy in reducing hypertensive related complications of pregnancy and improving fetal". outcomes".

The finding information suggested that yoga, a safe and cost-effective therapy may be used as an integrated form of exercise in reduced complications and improved outcomes in high-risk pregnancies.

The Effects of 3,3'-Diindolylmethane on Cardiomyocytes, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The heart muscle or myocardium is one of three types of muscles in humans, that build the walls of the heart.
The most common diseases of heart muscle include angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, and other heart muscle diseases caused by restricting blood supply to the muscle.

The most common symptoms of heart muscle diseases include tightness, pain, or swelling of the legs, ankles, and feet

Some patients may also experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort including bloating, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath caused by the reduced blood supply.

Most common risk factors associated with heart muscle disease include high blood pressure, heart tissue damage, heart problems, metabolic syndrome, nutritional deficiencies, and excessive alcohol drinking.

Some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may have a strong effect on the induction of heart muscle disease.

The Genetics Home Reference wrote, "Mutations in more than 30 genes have been found to cause familial dilated cardiomyopathy. These genes provide instructions for making proteins that are found in cardiac muscle cells called cardiomyocytes.

And, "Mutations in one gene, TTN, account for approximately 20 percent of cases of familial dilated cardiomyopathy".

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient that protects the heart muscle against the onset of cardiovascular disease researchers examined the 3, 3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) effects on cardiomyocytes.

Tested cell lines H9C2 used in the study were evaluated by DIM's influence on inflammation and apoptosis of cardiomyocytes induced by LPS. H9C2 cells incubated with DIM (10, 20, and 30 μM) with or without LPS for 24 h.

Treatment with various concentrations of DIM (10, 20, and 30 μM) inhibited the overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression) induced by LPS.

In other words, DIM normalized the levels of impaired TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA expression, in the LPS + DIM30(μM) group.

According to the tested assays, DIM treatment significantly blocked LPS-induced oxidative stress and inhibited LPS-induced apoptosis in H9C2 cardiomyocytes.

Furthermore, DIM significantly inhibited the LPS-induced expression of a protein associated with proapoptosis and enhanced the expression of a protein involved in anti-apoptosis.

Dr. Luo Q, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report, "DIM may have a protective effect for H9C2 cardiomyocytes against LPS-induced inflammatory response and apoptosis. DIM may be a new insight into the treatment of septic cardiomyopathy".

In order to find out more information about DIM anti-cardiovascular disease activity, researchers evaluated the function of DIM on hypoxia‑induced cardiac injury.

The study included H9c2 cells pretreated with DIM (1, 5, and 10 µM) for 12 h and exposed to hypoxia for 12 h.

DIM with different doses extended markedly attenuated the increased transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)‑1β, IL‑6, and tumor necrosis factor‑α) induced by hypoxia.

DIM modulated the genes associated with transcription of autophagy, compared with the hypoxia group.

DIM also protected the cells against apoptosis by inhibiting and exhibiting the proteins associated with anti-apoptosis and pro-apoptosis, respectively.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the protection of heart muscle against the risk of heart disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric's #Curcumin Exerts a Significant Activity in the Inhibition of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are disorders induced by organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites.
Out of trillions of organisms present on the earth, only a few hundred have been known to cause diseases.

Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person through direct or indirect contact with the infected patient. Others can be transmitted by insects or animals.

However, infectious diseases, the most prevalent in third-world countries are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.

Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, and fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and viruses.

In conventional medicine, except for viral infection, organism-induced infection can be treated with

antibiotics. If you are taking antibiotics for the treatment of chronic infection, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Believe it or not, most cases of infectious disease were stopped in the acute phase of infection. In which the immune system activated the first line of defense by destroying the pathogen before they have the chance of multiplication.

However, people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, and immature immune systems such as infants are prone to infectious diseases.

Dr. Mouton CP, the lead scientist in the analysis of the immune system and disease associated with infection in the elderly wrote, "Infectious diseases account for one-third of all deaths in people 65 years and older... A change in mental status or decline in function may be the only presenting problem in an older patient with an infection. An estimated 90 percent of deaths resulting from pneumonia occur in people 65 years and older" and "Mortality resulting from influenza also occurs primarily in the elderly".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural antiviral infection for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the effect of β-cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) composite, against the curcumin-loaded functional GO exerted a significant activity in the inhibition of RSV infection., which is considered the major viral pathogen of the lower respiratory tract of infants.

According to the results from the tissue culture infectious dose assay and immunofluorescence assay, curcumin-loaded functional GO exerted a significant activity in the inhibition of RSV infection.

Furthermore, curcumin-loaded functional GO improved greatly the biocompatibility of the host cells.

In other words, the composite inhibited the infection caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) without causing harm to the healthy cell in the tested cells.

Dr. the leads scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "the composite could prevent RSV from infecting the host cells by directly inactivating the virus and inhibiting the viral attachment, and possessed prophylactic and therapeutic effects towards the virus.

Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with chemical compounds for the treatment of viral infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Isolated from Cucumber Inhibits #ProstateCancer through Programming Cell Death Pathways, in Vitro and Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Prostate cancer found mostly in older men is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the prostate tissues caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to induce a malignant tumor.

Believe it or not, prostate cancer can be classified into many different types, depending on the type of cell that causes the onset of primary cancer.

* Adenocarcinomas, are the most common type of prostate cancer that develops in the gland cells that line the prostate gland.

* Ductal adenocarcinoma, the type of cancer starts in the cells that line the ducts (tubes) of the prostate gland. r

* Transitional cell cancer is cancer that starts in the cells that line the tube carrying urine to the outside of the body (the urethra).
* Squamous cell cancer is found to develop from flat cells that cover the prostate.
* Small-cell prostate cancer is found in tissue made up of small round cells.

Prostate cancer can also be classified into different stages

1. Stage 0
If the cancerous cell has not penetrated deeper tissue but in the surface of the prostate lining.

2. Stage I
In stage I, The cancerous cells are no longer in the surface but have invaded into deep the prostate lining, but still completely inside the prostate.
a. Stage IA1
The cancer is not ≤ 3 mm (1/8 inch) deep and ≤ 7 mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.1. Stage IA1: The spreading is < 3mm(1/8 inch) deep and & less than 7mm (1/4 inch) wide.
a.2. Stage IA2: The invasion area is ≥ 3 mm but ≤ 5 mm (about 1/5 inch) deep and & less than 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) wide.

b. Stage IB:
Cancer in this stage has invaded the connective tissue, & less than 5cm (2 inches).

b.1. Stage IB1: Cancer is 4 cm large (1 3/4 inches).b.2. Stage IB2: Cancer is ≥ 4 cm (1 3/4 inches) but & less than 5cm (2 inches)

3. Stage II
In stage II, the cancerous cells have spread to distant tissues but are still within the prostate.

4. Stage III
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately surrounding the prostate.

5. Stage IV
In this stage, cancerous cells have spread to the tissues immediately outside of the prostate, into other distant parts of the body

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural and potential ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers investigated Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a natural compound isolated from cucumber and other vegetables.

In PC-3 and LNCaP prostate cancer cell lines, CuB significantly and specifically inhibited prostate cancer cell growth with low IC50 at a concentration of 0.3 μM.

CuB-induced cancer cell apoptosis by modulating the proteins associated with programmed cell death and pro-apoptotic pathways.

Furthermore, the bioactive compound also increased the accumulation of the Sub-G0/G1 population before exhibiting cell cycle arrest.

According to the results of a chemopreventive model, pre-treatment of mice with CuB(2 weeks before PC-3 prostate cancer cell implantation significantly reduced the rate in vivo tumor formation.

Moreover, CuB resulted in a 79% reduction in tumor size (accompanied by marked in situ apoptosis) of the treated group without causing noticeable toxicity compared to controls at day 31.

In vitro and in the CuB-chemopreventive mouse model, CuB at a dose-dependent inhibited enzyme ATP citrate lyase phosphorylation associated with cancer cell metabolism.

The findings suggested that CuB harbors potent chemopreventive activity against prostate cancer via a number of mechanisms, without inducing harmful side effects.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed a high amount of CuB may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

BioactiveCompounds Found in the Flowers of #Herbal #Artichoke Exert A Strong Anti #SkinCancer Activities in Vivos

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the skin tissue. Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the skin due to the alternation of DNA.

The causes of skin cancer are unknown. However, researchers do know that personal and family history, fair skin, and long-term exposure to sun UVB are some prevalent risk factors for the disease.

In the Western world, the common factor linking a person to skin cancer is cumulative sun exposure induced basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer.

According to the statistics, approximately 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer.

In the US, sadly to say that approximately 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed each year, causing the death of 3000 people.

Believe it or not, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined.

Dr. Caroline Chang, in the concerns of widespread, nake skin exposure to the sun in the Summer in the risk of skin cancer, wrote, "Although personal melanoma risk factors are well established,... The desire to be tan, which has its roots in the medical profession, retains its popularity today despite evidence linking UV exposure to skin cancer".

The findings strongly suggested that the general public although has been warned that UV exposure is associated with skin cancer risk but some most people still have a desire to be tan.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer with no side effects, researchers investigated the methanol extract of the flowers of artichoke (Cynara cardunculus) and exhibited remarkable antitumor activity in an in vivo two-stage carcinogenesis test in mice.

Mice selected for the study were induced skin cancer by the injection of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

The active fraction of the methanol extract including four triterpene alcohols and their corresponding acetates showed inhibitory effects on TPA-induced inflammation (1 microg/ear) with a 50% inhibitory dose of 0.50-0.91 micromol/ear.

Furthermore, the anti-skin cancer activity of 2 taraxastane-type hydroxy triterpenes, taraxasterol, and faradiol, isolated from the flowers of Compositae plants Cynara scolymus (artichoke) and Chrysanthemum morifilolium (chrysanthemum), also demonstrated a similar effect in the previous study against 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammation in mice.

More precisely, these compounds inhibited the tumor-promoting effect of TPA (1 microgram/mouse) on skin tumor formation following initiation with 7,12-dimethylbenz[alpha]anthracene (50 micrograms/mouse).

Taken altogether, artichoke processed numbers of the bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending to the results from a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Honey Shows a Significant Anti Acute and Chronic Infection Effect Aganist Many Types of Bacteria, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.

However, the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damaged to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

In most cases in a healthy individual, depending on the size of the wound, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders, and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, diarrhea, short-term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash, and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.

In chronic infection, the symptoms are most vague or no specific symptoms, including bronchitis and asthma, persistent low-grade chronic joint and muscle pain, or swelling, and the alternations between diarrhea and constipation, bloating, or heartburn, In other words, the symptoms are totally depended on the location of the low-grade inflammation.

Unfortunately, in people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, the immune system can not destroy all microbial pathogens in a set period of time, leading to low-grade inflammation, a major cause of several chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

Liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of chronic infection, researchers examined the result of a chronic wound infection treated by the use of hydrogel loaded with an extract from manuka honey.

Bacteria isolated from patients with infected wounds at Alexandria Main University Hospital (Alexandria, Egypt) were exposed to hydrogel sheets composed of chitosan and gelatin and loaded with a new formula from manuka honey.

According to the tested assays, Manuka honey formula exerted a strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis.

Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "A hydrogel sheet composed of chitosan and gelatin loaded with a new formula extracted from manuka honey can be used as a dressing for chronically infected wounds".

In order to reveal more information about Manuka honey for the treatment of chronic infection, investigated the effect of the honey incorporated into cryogel scaffolds, utilizing its properties in a sustained release fashion to assist in the overall healing process.

According to the tested assays, a 5% MH silk fibroin cryogel has the potential to inhibit bacterial growth while still maintaining adequate porosity, mechanical properties, and cell infiltration.

In other words, such a scaffold would have been used in a number of applications, including bone regeneration without interruption by bacterial infection.

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic infection with no side effects, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
