Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grows and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.
Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
There are also rare cases that breast cancer started in other areas of the breast.
In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the US and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.
Breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and is most often discovered by the women themselves.
In some cases, breast cancer can also be noticed by the woman partner or during the doctor a routine physical exam.
In the early stage of breast cancer, patients may experience symptoms of a lump (mass) in the breast. and in the armpit (lymph nodes), nipple discharge, inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on a nipple, persistent tenderness of the breast, and unusual breast pain or discomfort.
If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor right the away to rule out the possibility. Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stage have a 5-year survival rate of 100%.
However, at the advanced stage, due to the oversize of the tumor, patients may experience symptoms of bone pain (secondary tumors in bone), shortness of breath (secondary tumors in the lung) Headaches, neurological pain, or weakness (secondary tumors in the nervous system) accompanied by the general symptoms shared with other types of cancer.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of breast cancer, genetic preposition may be one of the major predictions of the disease.
Dr. Amir Mehrgou, the lead scientist said, "Early detection of mutation carriers in these genes, in turn, can play an important role in its prevention. Because this disease has a high prevalence in half of the global population, female screening of reported mutations in predisposing genes, which have been seen in breast cancer patients, seems necessary. In this review, a number of mutations in two predisposing genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) occurred in patients with a family history,..".
In fact, women who carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a 68% of lifetime risk to develop breast cancer.
In seeking a potential compound for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the promising 3,3'-Diindolylmethane (DIM) anticancer effects of breast cancer patients with high HER-2/neu levels.
DIM combined with Herceptin enhances the effectiveness of Herceptin by significantly reducing cancer cell viability, and increasing apoptosis-induction and inhibition of colony formation, compared to the use of the chemo drug alone.
The combination also induced cancer cell death by inhibiting the expression of proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines, cancer cell division, and proliferation and migration.
Furthermore, the combination also significantly exhibited the expression of miR-200, which plays an essential in blocking tumor cell invasion and metastasis and reduction of FoxM1 expression in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation.
Dr. Ahmad A, the lead scientist said, "DIM-plus Herceptin therapy could be translated to the clinic as a therapeutic modality to improve treatment outcome of patients with breast cancer, particularly for the patients whose tumors express high levels of HER-2/neu".
Moreover, in order to know more information about DIM anti-breast cancer activity, researchers investigated the bioactive compound against the transcription factor Forkhead Box M1 (FoxM1) associated with aggressive human carcinomas, including breast cancer.
3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), a nontoxic dietary chemopreventive agent showed to inhibit the FoxM1 in various breast cancer cell lines, according to the observation of gene transfection, real-time reverse transcription-PCR, and Western blotting.
Similar to the aforementioned results, DIM combined with Taxotere enhanced Taxotere-induced growth inhibition of breast cancer cells and decreased the invasive capacity of breast cancer cells compared to treatment alone.
Most importantly, the combination treatment also significantly inhibited tumor growth in severe immunodeficiency (SCID) mice,
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Quercetin and #Alliin Improve the Ratio of Gut Microbiota in the Promotion of #Colonhealth, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. mNorton
The gastrointestinal tract microbiome is the community of microorganisms containing micro-organisms including mostly bacteria and some viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Under normal conditions, the ratio of good and bad microbiomes is balanced.
Believe it or not, our GI tract harbors one of the most complex and abundant ecosystems colonized by more than 100 trillion microorganisms, including Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes.
Believe it or not, compared to only 23 000 genes in the human genome, the microbiome encodes over three million genes producing thousands of metabolites, which play a critical role in many of the functions of our body.
Dr. Veronica Lazar, the lead scientist in the examined the interaction of gut microbiome and the immune system suggested that
* Gut microbiome has a strong impact to modulate neutrophil migration and function that affects the differentiation of T cell populations into different types of helper cells (Th), respectively.
* Gut microbiome interaction also can trigger antimicrobial responses by stimulating the production of the sIgA production, the first line of defense against pathogens and toxins.
* Gut microbiome interacts with the immune system against the initiation and progression of infectious diseases.
* Balanced gut microbiome protects the intestinal immune responsiveness that associates with the onset of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, inclduing cancer.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
In findings a potential compound for the improvement of gut microbiota, researchers examined the diet of traditional Asians is similar to the Mediterranean rich in quercetin and alliin on the growth of the host and the status of the gut microbiota and colonic epithelial immunity.
According to the tested assays, the alternate consumption of quercetin and alliin significantly increased the rat body weight and reshaped the gut microbiota composition.
In other words, the intake of quercetin and alliin improved the ratio of gut microbiota by enhancing the levels of good bacteria in the colon.
More precisely, quercetin and alliin increased the relative abundance of fecal Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria but decreased that of Bacteroidetes (P < 0.05) and increased the relative abundance of Candidatus Arthromitus, Lactococcus, Geobacillus, and Ruminococcus.
Furthermore, genes linked to gut immunity with higher-level systemic functions of cells, the organism, and the ecosystem were also altered in rats fed with quercetin and alliin.
The results strongly suggested that the diet of traditional Asians is similar to the Mediterranean which not only promotes gut health but also enhanced gut immunity.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "the alternate consumption of quercetin and alliin in traditional Asian diet can contribute beneficial metabolic effects by optimizing gut microbiota and altering the immunologic function of colonic epithelial cells".
Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with another phytochemical may be considered supplements for the improvement of gut immunity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Carotenoids Inversely Associated With the Risk of #BreastCancer and Cancers Among Women, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Breast cancer or malignant breast neoplasm is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the breast.
Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of women is 1/8.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, accounting for over 24% of all cancers diagnosed every year.
The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer in the localized stage is about 100%.
Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), is aggressive cancer occurred in women of any age that grows in sheets instead of lumps and invades nearby skin, leading to the whole breast which suddenly goes red and feeling hot, resembling an inflammation
The rare condition was found in only 1-6% of all breast cancer cases in the USA. Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) should be treated very promptly.
The most common symptoms of IBC are
* Rapid swelling (a cup size in a few days) sometimes
* Skin changes (pink, red, or dark-colored areas)
* Nipple retraction
* Persistent itching, skin hot to touch
* Initially resembles mastitis
* Breast skin ulcers (later stage of IBC)
How dangerous is IBC? Dr. Ana M. Gonzalez-Angulo, the lead scientist wrote, " (According to the results of the study), the median follow-up was 5.8 years (range, 0.3–23.8 years). There were 238 recurrences and 236 deaths (compared to 398 patients with IBC who were treated between 1974 and 2005). The median recurrence-free survival (RFS) duration was 2.3 years and the median overall survival (OS) time was 4.2 years".
Carotenoids is a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomato, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the protective role of carotenoids against the onset of breast cancer.
The study included a total of 521 women with breast cancer and age-matched controls (5-year interval) selected from three teaching hospitals in Guangzhou, China.
According to the chemical analysis, phytochemicals α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin are found in serum carotenoids,
* Serum α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin are associated inversely with the risk of breast cancer.
* The relative odds ratio for the highest quartile of serum concentration compared with the lowest quartile was 0·44.
* More precisely, the OR for α-carotene was.44, β-carotene was 0·27 and lycopene was .41, and lutein/zeaxanthin was 0·26.
* β-cryptoxanthin, one of the major compounds was not significant association with the risk for breast cancer.
Based on the stratified analysis, researchers found that serum α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin were also inversely associated with breast cancer risk among premenopausal women and among all subtypes of ER or PR status.
The results strongly suggested that all chemical compounds in the class of carotenoids work synergistically to decrease the risk of cancer among women.
Dr. Yan B, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account said, "The results suggest a protective role of α-carotene, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein/zeaxanthin, but not β-cryptoxanthin, in breast cancer risk.".
Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ginger's 6-Gingerol Inhibits BuChE Activity Associated with the Onset of Dementia, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Dementia is a medical condition characterized by the loss of mental ability, that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.
According to the statistics, about 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years and above that age.
The causes of dementia are associated with the gradual loss of neurons. Researchers do not know the exact causes of the death of neurons. Neither, do they know why people with the same health condition in the same family, are prone to the disease onset while others do not.
However, they do know certain risk factors are associated with the development of dementia, including
* The increase in age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia.
* Gender
Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than men.
* Ethnicity
Western people are more likely to develop dementia than people who live in Southeast Asia.
* Long-term use of medication
* Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood glucose and cholesterol, and obesity.
Out of the many risk factors involved in the incidence of dementia, aging probably is one of the major causes of the disease.
Dr. P Scheltens and colleagues in the evaluation of the risk factors of dementia wrote, "Prevalence estimates vary highly between studies. These variations may be due to variations in the study population—that is, reflect real differences. For example, age is the most important risk factor for dementia".
And, "In 2000, prevalence data from 11 European population-based studies were pooled to obtain stable estimates of the prevalence of dementia in the elderly (> 65 years)".
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of dementia with no side effects examined the traditional medicine use of ginger on dementia.
Epidemiologically, ginger has been known to have disease-modifying effects in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
6-Shogaol, a bioactive compound found in ginger has also recently been shown to process anti-neuroinflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated astrocytes and animal models of Parkinson's disease.
In a mice model, administration of 6-shogaol significantly reduced microgliosis and astrogliosis in intrahippocampal AβO-injected mice.
6-shogaol injection also ameliorated AβO and scopolamine-induced memory impairment by suppressing the production of proinflammatory cytokine and pre- and post-synaptic markers in the hippocampus.
Researchers after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "All these results suggest that 6-shogaol may play a role in inhibiting glial cell activation and reducing memory impairment in animal models of dementia".
Additionally, in order to reveal more information about Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) used for centuries to treat dementia in South Asia, researchers examined the 70% aqueous/methanolic extract of dried ginger (Zo.Cr) on a dementia model.
In isolated rat stomach fundus, Zo.Cr showed a spasmogenic effect (0.03-5.00 mg mL(-1)) and relaxed the tissue at concentrations > or =5 mg mL(-1).
In atropinized (0.1 microM) preparations, Zo.Cr (0.3-3.0 mg mL(-1)) relaxed high K(+) (80 mM)-induced contractions, indicating the disruption of the Ca(++) channel associated with pain.
6-gingerol was the most potent in the inhibition of BuChE. BuChE activity progressively in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Taken together, ginger processed with a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of dementia, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

* Gender
Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than men.
* Ethnicity
Western people are more likely to develop dementia than people who live in Southeast Asia.
* Long-term use of medication

#Curcuma Found in #Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits Symptoms of #BiliaryDyskinesia, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Biliary dyskinesia is a medical disorder associated with the gallbladder and sphincter of oddi affecting the biliary system to facilitate the normal flow of the bile.
Some researchers suggested that the condition is a symptom of bladder disease such as cholecystitis, gallstone, or pancreatitis, rather than being a disease itself.
The most common symptom is pain in the right upper quadrant where the gallbladder is located.
However, some patients may also experience the symptom of pain that does not stop with medication, including pain the under the ribs and in the back right shoulder blade.
Other patients may also experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting, indigestion, bloating, and belching.
If you have experienced persistently aforementioned pain that can be relieved by medication, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The cause of biliary dyskinesia is unknown. However, researchers do know that people who are of older age, obesity groups, and female gender are at a higher risk of the condition.
Believe it or not, women who are or who have been pregnant, taking birth control pills or in their menopausal years are at substantial risk of biliary dyskinesia developing compared to others.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of biliary dyskinesia, researchers investigated the turmeric effect on the right upper abdominal pain in biliary dyskinesia patients.
74 patients with the condition were selected into the trial, randomly assigned to either received Cholagogum (dried extracts from Schöllkraut and Curcuma) (39 patients) or placebo (37 patients) for 3 weeks.
According to the tested assays, dumpy and colicky pain was more rapid during the first treatment week in the Cholagogum F group compared to the placebo.
However, both groups exerted similar effects in reducing the feeling of being filled up, food intolerance, nausea, vomiting, and meteorism, during the whole treatment period.
There are no side effects in the treatment group.
In other words, dried extracts from Schöllkraut and Curcuma inhibited the symptoms of biliary dyskinesia, without inducing any side effects.
Dr. Niederau C the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "The study presents the first solid indication that extracts from Schöllkraut/Curcuma (Cholagogum F Nattermann) which have widely been used in daily practice for many decades have beneficial effects on pain due to biliary dyskinesia".
Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or combined with another remedy may be considered a supplement for the treatment of the symptoms of biliary dyskinesia,, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga Posture Practice Improves all Parameters Associated with a Healthy #Pregnancy and Outcome
By Kyle J. Norton
Posture is a state of holding the body still in a specific position, such as standing or sitting.
Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonizing external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In the concerns of the adverse effect of yoga posture in pregnant women, researchers at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center filed the study of 25 healthy pregnant women with 10 assigned to regular yoga practice, 8 to familiar with yoga, and 7 with no yoga experience, matching age, race, body mass index, gestational age, and parity in each group, researchers found that
1. There was no change in maternal heart rate, temperature, pulse oximetry(the proportion of oxygenated hemoglobin in the blood in a pulsating vessel), or fetal heart rate
2. The fetal heart rate across all 26 postures was normal.
3. There were no falls or injuries during the total cumulative 650 poses
Furthermore, after taking into account other confounders researchers insisted that yoga posture also does not express a decreased fetal movement, contractions, leakage of fluid, or vaginal bleeding in the 24-hour follow-up.
Yoga postures have been found to ease back pain, indigestion, stress, and other pregnancy-related issues and to help you get smoothly through the next nine months.
However, some researchers suggested that some yoga postures must be avoided during pregnancy for the safety of mother and baby, such as inversions and prone postures which may have the potential in twisting your torso and closing in on your belly, pressuring the belly,.....
Pregnant women should discuss this with their doctors before taking any class of yoga.
In support of yoga posture efficacy in reducing certain complications during pregnancy, Dr. Martins RF the lead author, and colleagues at the UNICAMP School of Medicine, conducted a randomized controlled trial with 60 pregnant women (age range, 14-40 years) with the report of lumbopelvic pain at 12 to 32 weeks of gestation from June 2009 to June 2011 assigned to the yoga group, practicing exercises guided by this method, and the postural orientation group, performing standardized posture orientation according to instructions provided in a pamphlet, suggested that
1. Yoga group expressed a significant improvement in median pain score in compared to the postural orientation group.
2. Both groups showed a decreased response in relation to posterior pelvic pain provocation tests and a gradual reduction in pain intensity during 10 yoga sessions.
After taking into account other co-founders, researchers postulated that although the yoga group displayed a high score in reduced pain as indicated by the pain provocation tests, standardized posture orientation may also be considered as another form of exercise in improved pregnancy outcomes.
Indeed, according to Bec Conant, prenatal yoga instructor at Om Births and birth doula in Boston, (Yoga helps) women to develop strength, flexibility, and confidence throughout their pregnancy and post-partum.
More interestingly, in the study of 335 women of 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy attending the antenatal clinic at Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital in Bangalore, India, assigned to either (n=169)yoga postures and breathing, and meditation group and (n=166) or control group, researchers found that yoga postures and breathing, and meditation group showed a higher birth weight and gestational age at delivery as well as lowering pregnancy complications such as isolated intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (p < 0.003) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) with associated IUGR (p < 0.025) compared to control.
More importantly, there was no report of significant adverse effects noted in the yoga group.

#RegularWalking Inhibits Various Markers of Inflammation Associated with the Risk of #RheumatoidArthritis
Kyle J. Norton
Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but regular walking contribution of health benefits to reduced symptoms and risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the younger and older elderly have been controversial.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, mainly affecting the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body. The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the age of 40 and diminishes the quality of life of many elders, leading to slowing joint damage progression(4).
In Europe, the disease has social consequences in constituted limitations in performing roles relating to working life and family and social life(3).
According to the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago, Walking is a low-cost and low-impact activity, requiring little supervision and regular walking improved the Quality of Life in managing pain symptoms for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis, such as pain(1), depending on walking route shape and the length of the walk(1).
On physical activity among patients with early RA, Dr. Silva CR and the research team in the investigation of the Consensus of the Brazilian Society of (SBR) for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) suggested, walking is one of the most often practiced exercises (80.64%) recommended(2).
Dr. Lusa AL and colleagues at Columbia University, said, "Psychosocial factors and body composition are potentially reversible contributors to walking speed in RA. Relative to articular disease activity and damage, nonarticular indicators were collectively more potent indicators of an individual's mobility limitations"(5).
In fact, regular walking also reduces the risk of early onset of Rheumatoid Arthritis through long-term anti-inflammatory effects but a single bout of walking does not lead to a change in various markers of inflammation or lymphocyte adherence to cultured endothelial cells. (6).
Nordic walking, in the study of overweight and obese postmenopausal women, not only reduced inflammatory states but also led to favorable hormonal responses, as well as improvement in muscle integrity and nutritional benefits(7).
Dr. Dopheide JF and the research team at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz said, "A reduced inflammatory state might be achieved by regular walking exercise, possibly in a dimension proportionately to changes in walking distance"(8).
